      My mechanic says my Toyota highlander expansion valve is located inside the dashboard and to replace it, they need to open the whole dashboard and everything. Is that right, Scotty ?

    Recover the refrigerant from the system.
    Remove the engine air inlet tube and the air distribution duct on vehicles equipped with 3.2/3.5 L engine.
    Remove one nut to the a/c lines at the expansion valve.
    Loosen the bolt at the receiver/drier to pivot the lines away from the expansion valve.
    Plug or cap the open end of the refrigerant lines.
    Gently pull the a/c line out of the expansion valve.
    Remove two #30 torx bolts retaining the expansion valve

    I've been working on this in my identical Camry for 3 days, Scotty. I finally figured out how you got the Blower Motor out, but now I see that you also took out the ECM and the AC ducts to get the blower motor out. Mentioning that would've been helpful.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  14 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    @starbucksmunky It sprays liquid refrigerant into the Ac evaporator. As that turns the refrigerant into a gas, this absorbs heat from inside the vehicle and cools you down. When the valve sticks, it doesn't spray correctly, and wham, no cold air anymore. Scotty Kilmer

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  14 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    @jamiedodd1991 There used to be good ways of testing them, when cars had four test ports. Now they only have two test ports, so it's more of a guess. But normally if the valve goes bad, it creates a restriction and the high side pressure goes really high. Scotty

    it's better to unbolt the inside bolts to get the expansion valve out, I jusst did one yesterday. But if it only bolts on the outside by the engine, you have to remove those and pull the lines off there

    @MrSoundQndn It could be a bad expansion valve or an electronic problem in the dash. when it's acting up, put AC gauges on the the system,and if the pressures are too high, replace the valve. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    if it's a rebuilt oem comp, they often are bad. But I would have changed the expansion valve during the first job, do that if it hasn't been done yet

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  14 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    @diistriitglow You don't have an expansion valve in that GM, you have an orifice instead, which costs two bucks. A lot easier to change, but that may or may not be your problem. You can't just add refrigerant guessing that's the correct level, it must be done by exact weight by removing all the refrigerant and refilling it with an exact weight using a scale. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    make sure the cooling fans are working on the radiator and condenser. But if they are, I would assume weak compressor that has to spin faster to get coldest

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @D12eams Well, there's a lot of levers and switches inside there which control the heat, so pull the radio out and see if you broke or bent something, OR if the radio whacks into a piece so it can't move right now. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    na, just parts of the passenger side, I find bending some of the metal supports gets it out easier, then you bend em back when done

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    either compressor is shot and not pumping at all, or the expansion valve is stuck wide open and has no effect on system pressure. • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Matthew55904 It's the valve that opens and closes to spray refrigerant inside the evaporator core inside the dash. That makes your air cold by absorbing heat from the cabin. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @mazdarx7head yep, the evaporator is clogged up. Often you can blow up through the drain hose to clear it out. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    celica is inside the dash on the evaporator. but the ford uses an orfiice tube that goes on the high pressure line between the condenser and the evaporator.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @pa28r200t54 Your HVAC system is wearing out, and it now in default mode, only defrost. Start by looking for a vacuum leak under the dash, it's often as simple as a hose falling off. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    well, if it blows cold air until it gets going that fast, often a bad compressor does that. But do check the refrigerant level first and PRAY it's just low on gas.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @felipevinalay It could be, but they are hard to check. If the low pressure gets really low and the high pressure gets high, it's often that valve sticking shut. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    blocked orifice tubes would make the high side go sky high, over 300 psi. you have something wrong obviously, but since the swine took all the test ports off decades ago, it's VERY hard to figure out what having only one low side test and one high side. Pretty much guesswork as to what is clogged up because of that. You just have to guess or start taking parts off and seeing which is clogged. good luck.

  • @scottykilmer

    @StateOfTheArts NO car has room under the hood, and this is easy compared to say, a Jeep, that takes 9 hours or labor to do this job, or a Mercedes, where it could easily cost 2000 dollars to change the exp valve out on. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @fbruno082 many things can do that, but since it doesn't run, and the pressure it that high, perhaps some nut put too much refrigerant in the system, that's WAAY too high pressure for a system with a compressor that isn't spinning

    @docbipe Just fixed the same exact car. It turned out to be a weak AC compressor. Volvo makes REALLY crappy AC systems, waay too complex, and really, how hot does it get in Sweden? Not a land where they care much for AC anyway. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    just being low on refrigerant can do that. My advice is to empty the whole system out, and have a factory load by weight put back in. Pray that fixes it, cause if not, big money repairs on a WRX, the compressors often go out

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    We mechanics don't normally use that term. But if he's taking about the swirl valve in the engine head, that's a GIANT job requiring pulling the engine apart.

  • @scottykilmer

    @spelunkerd Well, I can't comment on that because no one uses 12a here in texas, so I have absolutely no experience with it. BUT, 134a works perfectly in any modern vehicle, and it gets damn hot here in Texas. I've got 3 older toyotas I converted to 134a from 12, and they are cold as can be. Scotty

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    tons of wiring can be damaged, and if he shut off the ac condenser fan motor, it will cause pressure build up. Start by repairing the burned lines. Pray more damage hasn't occurred.

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice explanation. I had EV replaced on 2011 F-150, 5.0L V8 engine. Cost $239 for entire process. Symptoms: when I turned on AC, I heard a clatter of noise that came from underneath the dashboard or behind the glove box. The sound was similar to the sound of when you driver over a fairly large branch on the road that beats up underneath your vehicle. Or sounded like you had a big a$$ rat that had gotten beaten by a spinning cog inside your dash panel (behind the glove box). LoL Funny, (I liked that one.)
    Also, the AC blew extremely hot air. almost scalding air into the cab. hwew, that scared the heck out of me. I knew that meant (money to be $pent). Anyways, after seeing all the steps to access the EV, I now understand the high cost to repair. Thanks again. Good video. Thumbs up.

    Hi Scotty,
    I'm not sure what year your Camry was that you replaced the expansion valve on, but I have a 1994 Camry with the V6 and I could not for the life of me figure out how to get the blower motor out. We took off all the bolts, and could move it around a little, but it would not come out. Is there a special trick to this you made it seem so easy.
    Thank you

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    you can't flush a system with an expansion valve in it, it can ruin the valve. The valve has to be removed to flush the system correctly. I would not flush it at all if you're leaving the valve in, or just flush the part the valve is not in.

    hi scotty got a problem on my 2003 toyota prado. the ac compressor went out so i took it to a mechanic and changed the compressor with a new OEM part, while i was there i went and changed the evaporator and condenser too. so i got rid of all leaks and changed o rings and hoses and charged it up. Now the ac blows cool but not cold enough the way i remember. so checked it with another mechanic with tools and he said the compressor is not pumping enough pressure nd needs to be replaced.

      I also can't get expansion valve off it's all lose including the valve, but won't come out the housing, should I also remove the evaporator, from inside? if so it will be a big job

      If you have ALL the valve bolts taken off, the valve often is pretty stuck, I pry em off with a thin putty knife to get em going, then twist em off

    Hello, I wanted to ask a question about a 2010 Mazda CR 7 - the new compressor, Dry and condenser have already been changed and they have told me that the expansion valve needs to be changed but that it is a job where the slate has to be lowered - without However, in your video I see that it is not necessary - could you please explain it to me - Thank you
