    You are right, time is money that's why its easier to fill twice. Firstly if you over fill the filler will take longer to dry than a thinner coat and when filling twice the second fill dries very quick as its only a thin layer of filler. If you over fill you will spend more time sanding. I have seen too many mistakes when over filling, people sand it smooth but in reality it ends up a lump with smooth edges. Patching should not been seen when done correctly.

      Facts! I made this mistake. How do I fix it? The lump

    what type of plaster are you using? I just started picking up small paint and prep jobs. and use easy sand 5 & 20. Open to any new suggestions or products

      I always use base coat, it dry's quick and it's reasonable to sand.

    Cool, and what grade sandpaper do you use to sand the filler?

    • @howtopaintinfo
      @howtopaintinfo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Normally a soft 120 grit.

    You can still fill the holes as shown in this video just take the safety precautions when sanding. Generally all patching should come out smooth as long as you sand it smooth. It will depend on the fill you use but 180 grit should be ok. As for the sealer for the lead paint, basically any new coat of paint applied to the surface is a barrier, as far as I know lead won't leach though the surface.

    I'm not sure exactly what you mean, there are lots of different type of materials used for ceiling tiles so its hard to say without seeing it. My suggestion would be to use a base coat filler like they use on plaster board/drywall, this dries hard. Once again its hard to say exactly as I don't know how big the hole is but you could use the filler and apply several coats, don't try to fill the hole in one go as if you over fill it will be hard to sand. Use a two part filler if its made of wood.

  • @howtopaintinfo
    @howtopaintinfo  11 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Generally I use base coat, it's the filling compound used when flushing plaster board. Base coat is the first filler used when applying the tape to plaster board joins, some painter prefer cornice adhesive and some even use top coat (used for final coat on plaster board joins). Personally I find top coat too soft and that's why I used base coat, just remember not to over fill, it is a lot easier to apply a second coat of filler then having to sand off lots of excess filler.

    What is the name of that filling material that u used to fill in the holes ? Where could i buy it?

      The filler I used is base coat, it is the filler used for flushing plaster board. You can buy other powder fillers from paint supply shops or hardware's.

    Hi im planing on painting my room but all the wals have left over holes from drilling and shelves, but that i kind of know how to handle. One wall though has wallpaper and I'm hesitant if i should rip it off cause i dont know if it will leave texture. And another wall has some kind of base wallpaper that has been paintet but the top is riped of and i do no think that this paper is ever meant to be ripped of but the texture differs a lot and i am looking for any advise

    • @howtopaintinfo
      @howtopaintinfo  ปีที่แล้ว

      The wallpaper that hasn't been painted over should come of but you will need to remove it all and any glue residue.
      The wallpaper that has been painted over could be an issue, where it is ripped see if it goes back to the substrate, either solid plaster or plaster board. There is a chance you can remove it but it will take a lot of work. Some wallpapers are designed to be painted over to leave a pattern effect on the wall but they are harder to remove.

    Do you have to use a Primer when painting over filler?

    • @howtopaintinfo
      @howtopaintinfo  ปีที่แล้ว

      Its best to seal the patch first of you can and will end up with a dry spot where the patch is.

    All you can do is try to fill a group of holes at one time by using a wider filling blade. Paint may fill some of the holes depending on how big they are.

    Ive already filled cracks and painted twice but the texture on wall and filled part does not match
    Difference can be seen when looked closely
    What is the solution

    • @howtopaintinfo
      @howtopaintinfo  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hard to say without seeing it but if the walls were rolled with a long nap roller and left some texture to the walls then that could be the problem because when you filled the walls you filled the texture of the roller stipple so it stands out as a smoother spot. Or maybe you didn't sand enough, hope this is of some help.

      What type of filler did you use and did you sand the filler so it shouldn't stand out when painted?

  • @howtopaintinfo
    @howtopaintinfo  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    There are several ways paint can be removed, from timber surfaces either paint stripper or a heat gun and burn it off. Metal surfaces can be done the same way or you could grind off the paint. For masonry surfaces (brick etc) it would be easier to call in the professionals, they will chemically remove the paint using a commercial grade paint stripper and pressure washing.
    I'm a little unsure what you mean about using stucco as paint

  • @howtopaintinfo
    @howtopaintinfo  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Lead paint was banned in 1978 so the chances are your house has been repainted since then so this may not be an issue for you. You can buy lead test kits and they are not expensive. I'm not fully up to date with all aspects of lead paint but as far as I know its only an issue if you sand it but if you wear protective clothing and have the area sealed off and clean up thoroughly then its not an issue. So filling the holes is not the issue its just when you go to sand them.

    Couldn't you just overfill rather than do it twice? Most fillers are reasonably easy to sand even if the filler's a little thick. Time is money. Waiting for filler to dry twice...hmm.

    • @borys444
      @borys444 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      pbaylis1 use a hot mud and u can recoat in shorter periods of time either 5,20,45,60,90 min time settings.

    • @howtopaintinfo
      @howtopaintinfo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      One thin coat dry's quicker than a thick coat so most of the time you can refill just as quick because you don't need to wait long before refiling.
