Probably their best album in terms of radio airplay. Of the nine tracks on the album, I still hear seven of them on classic rock stations. Every song on the album has its own wikipedia page.
Keith Moon’s drumming on this is brilliant. I saw an interview with Roger Daltrey that said Moon played more to the vocals than a just a traditional back beat. The band at its most creative.
Many of Pete's songs are about his personal search for God. Once you realize that, these Who songs take on new meaning. Especially this song and "Bargain" detail his search for something higher. Check out his biography. A great read.
The song is about the mind of a fascist, a character called "Jumbo" in a project Townshend wasn't able to get off the ground, called "LifeHouse." This LifeHouse album was intended as a follow-up to double album Tommy released in 1969 (I was in eighth grade), the first rock opera, the album who's huge success saved the band from bankruptcy (for breaking so much equipment for so many years at the end of their performances). The entire Who's Next album contains the best songs from the aborted LifeHouse project. Do a reaction video to other songs from Who's Next:" Won't Get Fooled Again," and "Bargain." Then check out Live at Leeds, The Who's 1970 live album, widely regarded as the best live rock album in history (absolutely true). React to "My Generation" on this album. The Who were always the very best live rock band, bar NONE. Do a reaction to: "Won't Get Fooled Again" at Shepperton Studios, 1978, three weeks before Keith Moon, the drummer, died at age 33.
If you really want to be rocked by The Who, try something from their Live at Leeds album. My Generation is my favorite, a 15 minute medley with one bangin' riff after another; Amazing Journey/Sparks shows Moon at his best; Young Man Blues Pete and John at their best; Magic Bus has a mean harmonica by Daltrey. One of the best live albums ever yet few seam to react to it.
So happy you got to hear the original, Shawn! The Who is magnificent. Others are talking about this album, "Who's Next." My favorite on that album after this one is "Baba O'reiley." In concert, its mesmerizing, it's crazy great! My favorite Who song is "See Me, Feel Me/Listening To You."
I've known that backstory for a while but not really since I was a little kid, back then I just like everything about it, it's just so beautiful and melodic and then when it's angry it's really angry and it rocks out. One of my favorite songs for sure.
Pocket. Yes. So many great tunes from this iconic band. I have always been moved by this song but had a much different take on the lyrics. As a blue-eyed fan, I saw the angry character as singing at the man behind blue eyes. The singer is angry at the blue-eyed one who can not understand what he has had to go through and the emotions he is feeling. When you are a victim, you may want to strike out at those who oppress you, but if you do it is you who will be punished. The character is searching for help in curbing his anger and animal impulses so he is not baited into action. I had not heard the Townshend story, but it makes sense. A different take on the Stones' "Have sympathy for the Devil" idea.
Long time Who fan so its great seeing people newly discovering their music. Pete's songwriting has always been very personal, so much so that Roger didn't always feel comfortable singing some songs ( several songs on "The Who by Numbers"). You should do a reaction to another iconic song on the " Who's Next" album, John's tongue-in-cheek " My Wife" featuring John on vocals.
I was probably 8 when my brother bought this album and he wore out a couple of needles on it. Behind Blue Eyes has always been an anthem for me.. The Who were what we needed in 1971 and they delivered.
Fantastic song that I’ve lived by my whole life! This is incredible. The album is The Rick Anthem of the century or the millennium!I heard that it was a failed lighthouse project about the album though I did not know the details! Another great song or 2 by the WHO are I Can See For Miles and Reign O’er Me as well as This Song Is Over which is on The WHO’s NExT album!
Great song. My favorite of theirs. Makes me sad to think there's a whole generation of people out there who think this is a Limp Bizkit song and have only heard his version. This is a 52 year old prog rock classic.
Always has been my favorite album by these guys. First heard it going to a rainy weekend of racing at Laguna Seca. My buddy rigged an 8-track in my '65 Mustang and Who's Next was the only tape we had. I never got tired of hearing it so it was an immediate addition to my music collection when I got back. There is not a mediocre muchless a bad song on this album which is very rare imo. It also includes one of the greatest keyboard session musicians in Nicky Hopkins. More from this album please!
Who's Next was one of their best efforts and that is saying something. The Who and Pete in particular always pushed the creative envelope. He was something of an intellectual but his bandmates kept him grounded and didn't allow him to take himself too seriously. Your interpretation was insightful. Limp Bizkit? Please...
Pete Townshend is a genius. I love his solo albums, especially White City and All the Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes. Pete is responsible for two of the best concept albums, Tommy (1969) and Quadrophenia (1973). I recommend you listen to the entire albums, or at least entire sides because sometimes songs are made better when heard in context. Of course, the best concept album of all is The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis. :)
VERY interesting story from Pete about the songs origins. This is the VERY first time I've heard it from him !970 Denver a female friend came back from The Who concert and said she almost went upstairs with Pete, and of course I'm "Mmm Hmm That's Cool". Maybe she wasn't just telling a story?
just got a new set of headphones, about twice the price of my previous cans. it has taken me about an hour to adjust, but this song just blew me away. i've always loved this song, but i've never really heard it. the stereo imaging is incredible. the bass is so tight. the vocal harmonies made me melt. just amazing. thanks.
Gotta respectfully disagree with you there. I was happy to see that LB chose to cover the song, but their cover left me completely underwhelmed. The Who's original is several classes above the LB cover.
Please please please listen to something off Live at Leeds, preferably My Generation or Young Man Blues. Consistently ranked in the top 3 live albums ever. You will not be disappointed.
Well, in comparison to The Who, "Limp" Bizkit is a good name for that band. Yet another modern band that cant write a song, sing it, play it. Their cover was awful!
GO BACK AAND DO THEORIGINAL WONT GET FOOLED AGAIN NOT THAT CRAPPY LIVE THING ALWAYS DO THE ORIGINAL FIRST LIKE THIS GREAT STUDIO PERFORFANCE MASTERPIECE
The ENTIRE Who's Next album is fantastic. One of the greatest rock albums ever made. That good.
💯🤘✌️
The Who are remarkable. Period.
😎👍🎸
Who's Next is an iconic album, a 100% must-have in your collection. Thanks for your fantastic commentary.

Ya Shawn I Can't Explain is an awesome early one by them! Agreed too about that amazing Who's Next album. Greatness

Don't forget Who Came First

This was one of the first 6 albums I bought as an early teenager! Spoke to a lot of stuff I was going through. Love this entire album!!!

After Led Zeppelin IV, and Abbey Road, probably the best rock album ever recorded.
Please erase that Limp Biskit version right now from your memory!!!! This is the only version ❤️🔥🎸
Gotta try "Going Mobile" from the same LP. Its a little gem full of energy, fun song
WHAT'S HAPPENING MANNNN!!! 😊 GREAT AWESOME 71 ALBUM ( WHO'S NEXT ) SHAWN, DEFINITELYYYY IN THE TOP 50 ROCK ALBUMS OF ALL TIME!💯😊ENJOY!
I love this album. I heard the LB cover of this song, and was amazed by how good it was.
Gotta respectfully disagree with you there. I was happy to see that LB chose to cover the song, but their cover left me completely underwhelmed. The Who's original is several classes above the LB cover.
Wait til you listen to ALL of Quadrophenia and hear "I'm One". To me, Pete's follow up to this tune.
Please please please listen to something off Live at Leeds, preferably My Generation or Young Man Blues. Consistently ranked in the top 3 live albums ever. You will not be disappointed.
Fantastic song . . . I just got the 100th 'Like.'
