You're not alone! Their innovative music and lyrics, along with the top notch talent of Keith's drumming, Pete's guitar work, John's bass along with Roger's vocals put them up there with their contemporaries the Stones and the Beatles. BTW the letter 'h' is silent in Pete's surname, Townshend.

Another absolute banger of a song on the Who's Next album is "Bargain". Daltrey's voice soars into the Stratosphere on that one as Keith Moon puts on a drum clinic. Another amazing song by The Who is "Love Reign O'er Me" on the Quadrophenia album. In my opinion, Love Reign O'er Me is the greatest song of theirs. You'll hear the soft and mellow voice of Roger Daltrey and you'll also hear the passionate Leather Lungs Daltrey growling voice.

Not a “sleeper” to those if use who listened to “Who’s Next” endlessly! I was 17 in 1971 and I loved this album. Townshend wrote GREAT lyrics! “The Song is Over” is another one that has great lyrics, lovely vocals, great instrumentation, and a mix of complex rock with something reminding me of a ballad thrown in (“Excepting one note, pure and easy Playing so free, like a breath rippling by”). Phenomenal album. One of the big three, “Tommy” and “Quadrophenia” being the other two. I’m now 70 and I appreciate Townshend’s genius more and more each year.

I'll never forget when The Who performed Behind Blue Eyes at the Concert for NYC a few weeks after the atrocity on 9/11. Tears were streaming from the eyes of the firefighters, police officers, EMT's, and all the first responders who had been working at Ground Zero almost nonstop for weeks. The tears morphed into very emotional smiles when the song cranked into gear and went hard rock at the end. One of the firefighters tossed his official NYFD hat onto the stage. Roger Daltrey picked it up and said "I'm not worthy of wearing this" as he handed it back to the firefighter. The Who blew the roof off of Madison Square Garden that night with their emotional and very energetic set.

"Who's Next" might be the greatest "Rock Album" of all time. It was intended as a rock-opera called "Life-House", with a full story-line and multiple characters. Although this "concept-album" fell through in 1971, the resulting "album" was astounding. Even without the intended story, the power of the different characters still came through in each song. And every song on this album is GREAT. For other classics, I particularly recomend "The Song is Over" and "Going Mobile".

Pete wrote this song about a family member who did the unthinkable to him as a child, now with that said the first time they did this song live he almost had a panic attack on stage but its part of an album called "Tommy" and there was a movie made called "Tommy" that is really awesome about a blind kid who is the best at pinball even though he's deaf and blind. Elton John also collaborated in some of the music and movie. It's a really good movie and the concert for Tommy is just out of this world! Pete wrote every song for The Who and on one album they needed to fill up 10 more minutes of space and their manager told Pete to write a song for that spot and Pete thought he was nuts, he said songs are 3 to 4 minutes long but he kept thinking about it and that's how themed albums happened. Pete ended up writing a whole story in songs which turned into "Tommy"

The Who have many great songs, but my favorites continue to be their early live stuff, from around the same time this album was put out. It was at a perfect time in their career when youthful passion collided with great musicianship, creating a raw and masterfully powerful force that was unmatched. Live at Leeds catches it best and is one of the best live albums ever, recorded on a night where they were at their best, though Live at Hull is very similar. Young Man Blue, Amazing Journey/Sparks, Magic Bus or my favorite My Generation are all amazingly done. Unfortunately there's no live footage of the event, but if you want something close Young Man Blues from the Isle of Wight is a great watch.

Quadrophenia is my favourite album by The Who because it fits together so well, but Who's Next is my favourite collection of songs. Even so, there are some songs on it that will generally only be heard by album listeners and are unlikely to be heavily recommended to reactors. That's because they are lighter - just a bit of fun. Deep, powerful, angry, epic, hard-hitting are the sort of adjectives you want to sell a song when you're cherrypicking - my guess is, next in line from this album would be _Bargain._ Songs like _My_ _Wife_ or _Going_ _Mobile_ just make me smile.
Anyway, if you fancy looking at something earlier, you could try _I_ _Can_ _See_ _For_ _Miles_ - it was their highest-charting single in the US, and indirectly inspired a Beatles song! For bonus points also include the late, great Tina Turner's cover - it would be interesting to see someone react to the two side by side, they are very different arrangements but both worth your time.

Who's Next is one of the greatest albums ever made. Top 5 for me. Had it on 8-track back in the day and it was one long song for me.

"Happy Jack" was the first record I ever bought by The Who back in 1966. I was twelve and have loved them ever since. Got to see them at Charlton Athletic when I was nineteen and they were 'kin brilliant! Happy days 👍🇬🇧 p.s. "I'm a Boy" is also worth a listen...so funny 😀

YES - listen & react to the whole album. This is my favorite, but there's Quadrophenia, Who Are You and TOMMY. I think Roger said that if he wasn't singing in the band, he'd be out fighting somewhere, or something to that effect. Roger has the blue eyes, so I wonder if it is about him. Never really looked to see.

An honest introspection, with the gentler music reflecting that mood. The Who were DEFINITELY multi-faceted. Thanks for your reaction.

The Who are the gods of Rock n' Roll along with The Beatles. The two bands were formed in 1962, along with The Rolling Stones. The Who are one of my all-time favorite bands. Two bands today are influenced by The Who. The groups are Sports Team and Cage The Elephant.

In 1982 The Who announced their first farewell tour, the last stop they did was in Toronto which was broadcast on tv. My brother was going out that night and asked me to videotape it. I had heard a couple of their songs before but had never seen perform live, they made me a fan from that concert. Pete Townshend doing his windmills and bunny hops, Daltrey just being a powerful singer, Entwistle being the quiet one, and Kenny Jones doing a good job even if he wasn't as bombastic and crazy as Keith Moon, but no one could fill Keith Moons shoes. I saw them during their second farewell tour in 1989. I got kicked out for smoking pot while Daltrey was singing the lyric "Hey you smoking mother nature, this here's a bust" which is from the song "We're not Going to Take it", not to be confused with the Twisted Sister song of the same title. They have so many great songs.

Many Who fans consider "Love, Reign o'er Me" as the pinnacle of The Who's catalog. Roger's best singing, the power of The Who, the
    Lyrics of Pete Keith's drumming....just a masterpiece.
