As a senior citizen, you are a breath of fresh air listening to all types of music. This is just one of the genres of music I listened to in my younger days and still do. Happy to see your enthusiasum and keep up the good work.
In the sixties and seventies these guys were a juggernaut. They pretty much invented hard rock. Pete Townshend made the power chord famous and they are probably the greatest live band of all time. Their shows are truly legendary. They were the blueprint for what every hard rock band wanted to be.
This song was intended to be part of a piece called Lifehouse that Pete Townshend eventually abandoned. This song was told from the villain's perspective, exposing his inner feelings.
Question. Was Pete Townsend the main song writer in the band? Of course I've heard of the who and their songs and liked them but never really indulged into them like I have with other music.
Most underrated group ever. They should be in the top five in sales all time without a doubt. We grew up in the 70s in high school listening to this music. Everyone either liked Led Zeppelin first with The Who second or The Who first with Led Zeppelin second but both were the only two bands that had the same amount of raw power as each other. No matter who it was, any other band came after The Who and Led Zeppelin because no other band came close to both of them when it came to their power and energy!
This song: "nobody knows what it's like to be..." I heard The Who perform it at Giants stadium, and everyone, all 60,000 of us, were singing along. Ironic, considering it's a song about isolation, loneliness, and individuality. Nobody, except 60,000 people there, knew what it was like to be the bad man, to be the sad man, behind blue eyes.
Was that '89? Loudest show I ever attended in my life. Outdoors no less! They lived up to their reputation. It took about three days for my ears to stop ringing. That's coming from someone who saw Rush several times and had his head under an 81mm millimeter tube for a couple of years. Ear protection to somewhat under the tube of course. But still... No wonder why Pete is near deaf!
Not many people know this but Roger Daltrey's dog got hit by a car and died on the day The Who recorded this song. His grief on that day led to one of his greatest vocal performances of his career. BTW, another great song off of the Who's Next album is Getting In Tune!
It's impossible to over-rate this song. From the mesmerizing acoustic guitar to the melodic harmonies, and the sudden thunder in the center, for all its brevity, it packs the same powerful wallop as WON'T GET FOOLED AGAIN, only it's delivered in primarily softer tones.
This song and "Love Reign O'er Me" are, in my opinion, their two best. They do great versions of "Summertime Blues" and "Squeeze Box", which are more on the upbeat side of The Who.
IIRC, Pete Townsend started off in a skiffle band, playing banjo and accordion. Thankfully, he ceded the accordion-plating (mostly) to Weird Al, but his skills are extensive.
Has anyone seen claudillea Holloway singing the rolling stones paint it black on the voice UK, just a young girl, when she starts singing you would never guess what was coming, an amazing opera voice, a great performance, a future star. Look at the reactions of the coaches and the audience, an amazing performance. Enjoy.
@Celtic Revival / Adfywiad Celtaidd For some reason that's usually the only song you hear from "It's Hard". I think a better song from that album is "Cry If You Want".
These guys were true poets and had so much meaning and emotion within their songs. I love seeing you enjoy this so much! I remember listening to them when I was 7 been hooked ever since.
I love watching you take this musical journey. You need to check out some Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). Turn to Stone live at Wembley is a an amazing performance. Actually the entire ELO: Wembley or Bust concert film is something to see.
Oh, yeah - ELO! Jeff Lynne was always under-rated as a singer and composer - especially his vocals -- too bad that he and Bob Dylan are the only surviving members of the "Traveling Wilburys" -- an awesome band... I won't belabor the history - it is easily looked up -- Thanks!
The rawness of this song, like so many of their songs, is so compelling. They are my favorite band of all time. If you want to get a closer look at The Who (because their musicianship must be witnessed!), check out The Kids Are Alright, a 1979 documentary which is available on Amazon Prime. They were heavily involved in the making of it.
He has to do some thing off Quadrophenia. The real me will blow his mind, can't argue with Love rain O're me either. The other songs are great but they don't show the bands true range
I just picked up the complete discography of this band, and I purposely waited decades to do so. In my lifetime, I've owned and listened to enough music to fill terabytes without blinking. I knew that in the world of western music, the Who were easily the most unorthodox rock band to come from the mid to late 1960's era. Listening to this band is enjoyable, but it's also very much a challenge. The Who will defy your conventions, understandings, and perception of what drums, bass, and electric guitars can do within the framework of a traditional pop arrangement. No one in this band approaches their instrument in a conventional or expected manner, and Rodger Daltry is the only friendly familiar you will be allowed if you decide to ride on this train. This band is the final frontier of classic rock, and I wanted to make damn sure that my musical palette was trained and developed enough to appreciate it. The Who are the journey you take when you have truly heard it all and feel that there couldn't possibly be anything new under the sun.
Blue eyes are pretty (got a pair myself) but those deep warm brown eyes of yours are pretty nice too! Try "The Magic Bus", one of The Who's most FUN songs.💙
Another band you CANNOT go wrong with. My sister and I went to see them live in April 2015 when they were in Raleigh NC (both of our birthdays are in April, a week apart from each other)...first of all, Roger Daltrey is almost exactly my dad's age, but....He has one of the greatest voices I have ever heard. I dearly adore their song "Tea & Theatre", it's a sad song, but it's really wonderful. That concert was one of the best experiences ever. Also, when we went to that concert, their drummer for the event was Zak Starkey, son of Ringo Starr from the Beatles...and Pete Townshend's younger brother was playing guitar as well...If it was possible to go to ever concert they ever gave in the past OR might ever do again, I would go.... I also like the songs "5:15", "The Seeker", "Bargain", "I Can See For Miles"...shit any of them... Pete Townshend is as much a legend as anybody else, that guitar....
When you have the time you should listen to the entire Rock Opera Tommy and also Quadrophenia. But if you want just a taste do Pinball Wizard from Tommy and 5:15 from Quadrophenia. Both form The Who. Check out the movie Tommy when you feel like having your mind blown. It's pretty intense.
Quadrophenia is so good, and definitely one of those things you gotta listen to in its entirety. It has a few stand out tracks, but its strength is in the album as a whole IMO.
I really respect you man. You didn’t pause in the middle of a lyric. You waited for them to finish, then gave beautiful insight. This is the song that utterly broke me when I heard it for the first time. I realized that I’m not alone. I never was.
I was living in Bridgewater, Maine, Christmas of 1979. I was 17, 11th grade. Times were VERY hard. For Christmas we could chose 1 gift, no more than 20 bucks. Now in the afternoons they bused us up to Presque Isle for a Graphic Arts course. We would spend the afternoon walking around town, taking pictures, then go back and and develop them and print them. On one of my journey's I had seen this album, "The Story Of The Who". It was a Double album, and on the front it had an exploding pinball machine. I had heard maybe one Who song at that time, but it looked cool enough that it was the gift I chose for Christmas. And have never regretted that decision. John Entwistle, Bass player for the Who, was a big influence on Geddy Lee and Chris Squires. His nickname was "Thunder Fingers". In 2011, he was voted as the greatest bass guitarist of all time in a Rolling Stone magazine readers' poll. If you do another WHO song, I'd like to suggest the studio version of "MY GENERATION". The Bass and Daltry's voice carry that song: th-cam.com/video/qN5zw04WxCc/w-d-xo.html Peace out on a Friday. Rock on and stay virus free
The Who are my all time favorite group across any genre. I got it from my mom and dad. I always explain The Who is the product of 4 soloists coming together in a hurricane of sound that shouldn't work, but it does. Quadrophenia is one of those albums I have to listen from start to finish. So many awesome songs that actually have meaning (not to say they don't have some songs that are strictly for fun lol). I was lucky that when I was ~10 years old my parents took my sister and I to a Who concert, my first concert ever, and it was the last year The Ox was alive. I'll never forget it. My dad remembers the first time he heard a Who album in stereo, the sounds bouncing from left to right blew his mind! RIP Entwistle, RIP Moon the Loon.
You were very lucky!! I've been listening since I was 4. My sister made me memorize all the band members and all instruments each played and I have to recite it to her friends on demand. When I was twelve I saved up and got The Phases boxed catalouge of all The Who's albums to that point, for $50 from the back of Rolling Stone magazine. I've been lucky enough to meet Roger and Pete multiple times as well as most of the current band they've been working with. Nice guys one and all. LONG LOVE ROCK!! 🤘🏻🎶🎸🎯
If you want to hear more of their heavier side, I'd recommend "Run, Run, Run," "Heaven and Hell" (live), "Young Man Blues" (live) or "The Real Me." And if you're up for 14 minutes of absolute chaos there's the live version of "My Generation" from Live at Leeds. It's the live stuff that really shows how heavy and energetic they can get.
@@johnenock1198 It's such an underrated album. I used to have A Quick One in my CD player alarm clock and every morning Run Run Run was like a shot of pure adrenaline.
@@hugsandhomies I have the vinyl. I've heard a version where the ending is completely ruined, don't know how two different versions exist? Same with Dogs Part Two, the B side to Pinball Wizard. Someone wrecked this as well . Agreed re Live At Leeds! Best live album ever.
Listening to this song makes me reminsce my past both bad and good, I have lived through a lot at age 63, drugs, lost loves, heart attack and other health problems,. like others I have lost loved ones, went through depression but I kept keepin on keepin on day after day. The good thing is after having met my wife thirty years ago she changed me for the better, became a Buddhist, quit all my bad vices, meditate daily, and my wife had me leave my comfort zone and spent time in her home country of Thailand where I gained a new perspective of life.
@@justben193 I was going to say rumours for sure. I think the debut album by Boston is as solid throughout as well. Not as good IMO, but as solidly consistent.
Happy Jack & The Who Sell Out my first album . Saw the band in 1968 at the Electric Factory in downtown Philadelphia. Saw the Velvet Underground there. Also my first Grateful Dead concert was in Providence Rhode Island in 1971 . I spoke with Jerry about sitting behind the stacks of Twin Reverbs and he said that was alright with him. I went around the right side of the stage and Ramrod pushed aside equipment cases and I was through. I went between an opening between stacks of amps and the first person I find is Bear dropping liquid acid on the back of peoples hands and then they licked it off. I stuck my hand out and he put four drops on mine and I licked it off. I met the entire board and it’s the best show out of so many. Thanks Jamal for your excellent choices and getting off on the Dead . ⚡️🎸⚡️
I just discovered your channel tonight and 3 hours later I am writing this. Being old enough to have grown up listening to the Who, Tull, Edgar Winter Etc. It's like hearing them again for the first time watching your reactions. Thank you for taking us on this ride.
Jamel - It is so very enjoyable to watch your reactions - you APPRECIATE the music and GET IT! You are TRULY ALL RIGHT!!! (I am 66 yr old married male in Northern California - grew up on this stuff you are experiencing firsthand). Fascinating! You MUST MUST MUST EXPERIENCE BLOOD, SWEAT & TEARS!!!! First song: "And When I Die". THEN: "You've Made ME So Very Happy" (I'm so glad you came into my life") - THEN - to truly mellow out - "Sometimes in Winter" You will LOVE BST!!!! WELCOME!!!
*_'Behind Blue Eyes',_** The WHO* -- Love this one too! When I picked up that Greatest Hits CD for *The WHO* from a bargain bin a few years ago, I was surprised at how many of the songs I knew, but few by name. I have listened to it on repeat several times in my car since then. Great, great songs, beautifully composed, well constructed, elegantly performed. Absolute masterpieces, all.
Rogers voice is killer! I've seen them 3 times. Last show I saw them play was in Seattle when Pete Townson did the guitar windmill and broke his hand. Amazing band and one of my favorite! 💞✌
To me, as a child hearing the Who all the time ( I had older siblings and there was alway music playing in our house), I just loved the beautiful sounds of this song. As I got older, it seemed to me to be about the Vietnam War and the "blue eyed" Americans who were the supposed "bad men", the veterans who were treated so badly when they came home, like they didn't have dreams, feelings and anger.
Also, from the Rock Opera "Tommy"..Roger Daltrey's.."See Me...Feel me..Touch me"..about a deaf, dumb and blind boy, but a "Pinball Wizard" is on video, and totally amazing ...
Sister Disco! The Real Me! However Much I Booze! Soooo many really good song from The Who! I envy you getting to hear great music for the first time. I have loved The Who for so long! They have been in the soundtrack of my life for the past 40 years. I am 52 now. Keep on with the great videos! My wife and I love them!
Wow, you are hitting all the Who classics today. Such a powerful band ! Next you should check out The Real Me by The Who. Now that song is Killer!! Great reaction!
Thanks, my friend, for exploring an album that I discovered as a 20 year old 49 years ago. Behind my blue eyes, you are helping to take me back to some very intense times in my life. Something else that I feel we have in common, I'm 6'9". You've likely been asked "how's the weather up there?" and the like ad nauseam. Peace out, indeed.
I like when you know the song, but when you discover new ones, I see myself as a young kid. Your reactions to Greatness remind me of my own first reactions, and for that, I thank you.
Yo! That'd be dope. And Astronomy: I'm obsessed with the one in the 1976 live video I think it was. They say it's not the perfect version but the piano and Buck with his solo... and Eric Bloom drops the lyrics in an especially haunting way there.
Don't forget "Veteran of the Psychic Wars"! There's a live version on youtube with Buck doing one of the best guitar solos ever. EDIT: I got so excited thinking about it I had to find it to listen to it again: th-cam.com/video/7pFdkkjGiEs/w-d-xo.html
This song has an amazing cover by Limp Bizkit. I recommend you to listen to that version of as well. Like your channel and reactions. Keep up the good work dude 🤘
It’s so awesome watching and listening to you react intelligently to the music that we grew up with. You really get it, respect it and appreciate it. You understand how much talent it takes to play these instruments and to sing these lyrics. Thank you so much for listening to our music with unbiased ears and sharing with us your fresh take and perspective on all this greatest music ever recorded. If you’re looking for more WHO songs to react to..... The Real Me Love, Reign On Me Thank you Jamel!!!
Do Pearl Jams cover of Love Reign o'er Me from VH1 Rock honors live performance, alongside The Who's original version. Two great bands that have a great relationship separated by a generation.
@@jacjr6193 Exactly. He might deny that, but that's certainly the first image that pops into my mind. Pete's a very cerebral writer, so it makes sense that he puts himself into his lyrics.
I grew up with and have loved these songs for decades, but watching them with you is forcing me to listen to them with fresh ears that is causing me to really pay attention to the lyrics like never before...thank you for that!
This and love reign o'er me are the pinnacle of The Who. They were lyrically underrated and somewhat underappreciated..... what with Pete Townsend's guitar and Keith Moon's drums..... Time for the who live at Woodstock
Love Entwistle's rock steady bass. An aside, I've been checking out reaction videos for a couple of months now and you come closest to the joy I had when these songs came out. It was a helluva time to be alive. Glad you can catch the feelings.
as a blue eyed person with struggles with heavy introversion and depression in the past, this song was one of the special ones. still an introvert, but everything's good for years now :)
The Who...One of the Greatest Rock Bands of All-Time! Keep it going Jamal with "Boris the Spider." It has a totally different vibe than most of their other songs. Thanks

With John Entwistle and Keith Moon driving the band. One of the best bands ever.
R.I.P. John Entwistle, one of the greatest bassists to ever play the instrument.
Add Keith Moon's drums...magical & hard rocking.

Run, Run Run one of my favourites. Can't understand why they didn't release this, or So Sad About Us as singles from A Quick One
This whole album Jamal is called Who's next. All of the songs on this are hits. Pink Floyd Dark side of the Moon might be the only album to beat it.
you can add tommy and the wall to that list and if you give me fifteen seconds I'll come up with more
A dead heat!
Fleetwood mac rumours gotta be up there too
@@justben193 I was going to say rumours for sure. I think the debut album by Boston is as solid throughout as well. Not as good IMO, but as solidly consistent.
Oh please stop, Led Zeppelin 4, exile on Main Street, a lot of Beatles albums cmon now
Happy Jack & The Who Sell Out my first album . ⚡️🎸⚡️
ELO next, Mr Blue Sky, Telephone Line, Can't get it out of my head, Turn to Stone, Strange Magic, Living Thing
Yes! And add Sweet Talkin' Woman to the list!😊❤🎶
Last Train to London
I just discovered your channel tonight and 3 hours later I am writing this. Being old enough to have grown up listening to the Who, Tull, Edgar Winter Etc. It's like hearing them again for the first time watching your reactions. Thank you for taking us on this ride.
See me, feel me is another great ono from them
Jamel - It is so very enjoyable to watch your reactions - you APPRECIATE the music and GET IT! WELCOME!!!
"Eminence Front" is another great song with guitarist (and their main songwriter) Pete Townshend on lead vocals instead of lead singer Roger Daltrey.
Qthelost “Another Tricky Day”. Great blending of Pete and Roger. Might be my favorite song from them.
Qthelost My personal favorite.
Until this moment, I never knew that "Eminence Front" was by The Who -- always thought it was some funk band in Motown!!! :-)
fewwiggle Whoa
*_'Behind Blue Eyes',_** The WHO* -- Love this one too! When I picked up that Greatest Hits CD for *The WHO* from a bargain bin a few years ago, I was surprised at how many of the songs I knew, but few by name. I have listened to it on repeat several times in my car since then. Great, great songs, beautifully composed, well constructed, elegantly performed. Absolute masterpieces, all.
Jethro Tull- Locomotive breath,
Aqualung,
Too Old to Rock and Roll, Too Young to Die
Rogers voice is killer! I've seen them 3 times. Last show I saw them play was in Seattle when Pete Townson did the guitar windmill and broke his hand. Amazing band and one of my favorite! 💞✌
Jamal, I beseech you. You must do "The real me" is on Quadrophenia. One of the best rock albums ever!
That song is amazing live, but only with Entwistle :-(
Good choice!
It's on the same album as Love Reign O'er Me
To me, as a child hearing the Who all the time ( I had older siblings and there was alway music playing in our house), I just loved the beautiful sounds of this song. As I got older, it seemed to me to be about the Vietnam War and the "blue eyed" Americans who were the supposed "bad men", the veterans who were treated so badly when they came home, like they didn't have dreams, feelings and anger.
My Wife and Bargain off this album, do them! Then you gotta hit The Punk and The Godfather off Qudrophenia
Thank you so much Jamal ~ LOVE your musical journey ~ brings back so many happy memories for me. Take care and God bless ya
Recommend "Substitute."
Such an under appreciated song!
Haven't heard this for years wonderful to be reminded of it again such a powerful song
Since you seem to be on a The Who tear: "The Seeker" , "Christmas" , "My Wife".
the Seeker ....yeahhhhhh
A Quick One While He's Away
Pure and Easy!
"My Wife" I think you'll find it quite the toe tapper
My Wife one of the best!
"Bargain" next!
I watch your reactions and I've heard all the songs and music you review and it makes me feel just the same. I still feel the same 40 years later..
Next: "Yes - Roundabout" Please! You will have another "oh... that's them?!" - moment probably ;)
ElFelizable Yes! I second that!
That whole album, I must have worn holes in it!
Great point, although it requires a bit of research. Most Americans have no ideal what a "roundabout" is. :)
I feel so lucky to have been a teenager and a young woman during the late sixties thru the 70's. and listening to the music of those years....
THE WHO - MY GENERATION
Ur old
@@catx9276 so's ya mama
The who the song is kicks as is rock I love it
Join together by The Who
You've been good to the Who, Jamel; and their fans. Thank you. It's so cool to hear "We're going on a ride!" It is your catch phrase, I think.
Dangit Jamel! How am I going to go to bed when you keep droppin this sweet content? :-)
Follow my example and get laid off because of Coronavirus!
Actually, don't do that. Just go to bed.
I like when you know the song, but when you discover new ones, I see myself as a young kid. Your reactions to Greatness remind me of my own first reactions, and for that, I thank you.
You should do Pinball Wizard by The Who
"Who's Next" shows these
four at the peak of their
individual & cooperative
skill & talents 💕🎶🎵 !!!
Also David Bowie- in order: Life on mars, Let's dance, Lazarus
Queen Bitch, Station to Station, Wild Is The Wind, Panic in Detroit
Golden Years. Modern Love. Young Americans.
Well, we've got to get the epic rocking in here, now: Suffragette City, Rebel Rebel, and The Jean Genie.
Unwashed and Somewhat Slightly Dazed
The Width of a Circle
So happy to see your reaction. You really need to see some concert footage from the Who. They set the bar for every live rock act that came after them
Now you just have to do Don’t Fear The Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult and ill be happy lollllll
I would add Tuesday Afternoon by the Moody Blues. The long extended version.
Oh and Burning For You, and even Godzilla!!!! BOC is another fun band to explore!!! Loved them live!!!! 🤘🤘
Thank you for this, J. I love getting to see your reactions to these songs I've heard hundreds of times, and still feel their full impact. Keep safe!!
The Real Me
Love, Reign On Me
Thank you Jamel!!!
Try Lola by The Kinks
Waterloo Sunset, You Really Got Me, Village Green Preservation Society, Low Budget, Around the Dial and many others.
@@AdrianDeVore All great choices but Lola might shock him a bit.
@@patrickspringer8030 That's why Lola was so successful because it was very shocking at the time. 😄
And after Lola, do Yoda by Weird Al.
Saw Rupert Giles performing this at the Espresso Bar in 2000. What an experience.
Do the band, The Guess Who with the songs “American Woman” “These Eyes” “Laughing” and “No Sugar Tonight” great songs
Do Pearl Jams cover of Love Reign o'er Me from VH1 Rock honors live performance, alongside The Who's original version. Two great bands that have a great relationship separated by a generation.
if you're down for it, i'd recommend Snarky Puppy's 'Shofukan', it's a straight banger from beginning to end
Roger Daltrey Under a Raging Moon another great song as well as After The Fire. I feel you should do a reaction to and will enjoy.
"Blue eyes" can refer both to actual blue eyes AND the eyes of a person who's got the blues.
teppolundgren Like lead guitarist Pete Townshend.
@@jacjr6193 Exactly. He might deny that, but that's certainly the first image that pops into my mind. Pete's a very cerebral writer, so it makes sense that he puts himself into his lyrics.
The entire song is about the nature of depression.
One of my all time favorite songs. Thank you for this!
Love The Who, but have you checked out any Talking Heads yet? Gotta listen to Slippery People and Life During Wartime
And burning down the house. He'll get a kick out of their live show.
He can get a big suit too! lol
Pretty much anything from Stop Making Sense will bring out some serious stank face
One of the first punk songs ever.
Hands down my favorite Who lyrics.
Thanks for doing this one.
How about: The Police "King of Pain"
I grew up with and have loved these songs for decades, but watching them
with you is forcing me to listen to them with fresh ears that is
causing me to really pay attention to the lyrics like never
before...thank you for that!
Jamal. Thank you for interpreting this great song. I was 18 when this came out and it describes me at that time of my life!
as a blue eyed person with struggles with heavy introversion and depression in the past, this song was one of the special ones. still an introvert, but everything's good for years now :)
One of my favorite Who songs. I love the way it builds and builds as the song goes along.
The Who...One of the Greatest Rock Bands of All-Time! Keep it going Jamal with "Boris the Spider." It has a totally different vibe than most of their other songs. Thanks
