In the sixties and seventies these guys were a juggernaut. They pretty much invented hard rock. Pete Townshend made the power chord famous and they are probably the greatest live band of all time. Their shows are truly legendary. They were the blueprint for what every hard rock band wanted to be.
This song was intended to be part of a piece called Lifehouse that Pete Townshend eventually abandoned. This song was told from the villain's perspective, exposing his inner feelings.
Question. Was Pete Townsend the main song writer in the band? Of course I've heard of the who and their songs and liked them but never really indulged into them like I have with other music.
Most underrated group ever. They should be in the top five in sales all time without a doubt. We grew up in the 70s in high school listening to this music. Everyone either liked Led Zeppelin first with The Who second or The Who first with Led Zeppelin second but both were the only two bands that had the same amount of raw power as each other. No matter who it was, any other band came after The Who and Led Zeppelin because no other band came close to both of them when it came to their power and energy!
This song: "nobody knows what it's like to be..." I heard The Who perform it at Giants stadium, and everyone, all 60,000 of us, were singing along. Ironic, considering it's a song about isolation, loneliness, and individuality. Nobody, except 60,000 people there, knew what it was like to be the bad man, to be the sad man, behind blue eyes.
Was that '89? Loudest show I ever attended in my life. Outdoors no less! They lived up to their reputation. It took about three days for my ears to stop ringing. That's coming from someone who saw Rush several times and had his head under an 81mm millimeter tube for a couple of years. Ear protection to somewhat under the tube of course. But still... No wonder why Pete is near deaf!
Not many people know this but Roger Daltrey's dog got hit by a car and died on the day The Who recorded this song. His grief on that day led to one of his greatest vocal performances of his career. BTW, another great song off of the Who's Next album is Getting In Tune!
It's impossible to over-rate this song. From the mesmerizing acoustic guitar to the melodic harmonies, and the sudden thunder in the center, for all its brevity, it packs the same powerful wallop as WON'T GET FOOLED AGAIN, only it's delivered in primarily softer tones.
This song and "Love Reign O'er Me" are, in my opinion, their two best. They do great versions of "Summertime Blues" and "Squeeze Box", which are more on the upbeat side of The Who.
IIRC, Pete Townsend started off in a skiffle band, playing banjo and accordion. Thankfully, he ceded the accordion-plating (mostly) to Weird Al, but his skills are extensive.
Has anyone seen claudillea Holloway singing the rolling stones paint it black on the voice UK, just a young girl, when she starts singing you would never guess what was coming, an amazing opera voice, a great performance, a future star. Look at the reactions of the coaches and the audience, an amazing performance. Enjoy.

The rawness of this song, like so many of their songs, is so compelling. They are my favorite band of all time. If you want to get a closer look at The Who (because their musicianship must be witnessed!), check out The Kids Are Alright, a 1979 documentary which is available on Amazon Prime. They were heavily involved in the making of it.

I just picked up the complete discography of this band, and I purposely waited decades to do so. In my lifetime, I've owned and listened to enough music to fill terabytes without blinking. I knew that in the world of western music, the Who were easily the most unorthodox rock band to come from the mid to late 1960's era. Listening to this band is enjoyable, but it's also very much a challenge. The Who will defy your conventions, understandings, and perception of what drums, bass, and electric guitars can do within the framework of a traditional pop arrangement. No one in this band approaches their instrument in a conventional or expected manner, and Rodger Daltry is the only friendly familiar you will be allowed if you decide to ride on this train. This band is the final frontier of classic rock, and I wanted to make damn sure that my musical palette was trained and developed enough to appreciate it. The Who are the journey you take when you have truly heard it all and feel that there couldn't possibly be anything new under the sun.
Blue eyes are pretty (got a pair myself) but those deep warm brown eyes of yours are pretty nice too! Try "The Magic Bus", one of The Who's most FUN songs.💙
Another band you CANNOT go wrong with. My sister and I went to see them live in April 2015 when they were in Raleigh NC (both of our birthdays are in April, a week apart from each other)...first of all, Roger Daltrey is almost exactly my dad's age, but....He has one of the greatest voices I have ever heard. I dearly adore their song "Tea & Theatre", it's a sad song, but it's really wonderful. That concert was one of the best experiences ever. Also, when we went to that concert, their drummer for the event was Zak Starkey, son of Ringo Starr from the Beatles...and Pete Townshend's younger brother was playing guitar as well...If it was possible to go to ever concert they ever gave in the past OR might ever do again, I would go.... I also like the songs "5:15", "The Seeker", "Bargain", "I Can See For Miles"...shit any of them... Pete Townshend is as much a legend as anybody else, that guitar....
When you have the time you should listen to the entire Rock Opera Tommy and also Quadrophenia. But if you want just a taste do Pinball Wizard from Tommy and 5:15 from Quadrophenia. Both form The Who. Check out the movie Tommy when you feel like having your mind blown. It's pretty intense.
Quadrophenia is so good, and definitely one of those things you gotta listen to in its entirety. It has a few stand out tracks, but its strength is in the album as a whole IMO.

I was living in Bridgewater, Maine, Christmas of 1979. I was 17, 11th grade. Times were VERY hard. For Christmas we could chose 1 gift, no more than 20 bucks. Now in the afternoons they bused us up to Presque Isle for a Graphic Arts course. We would spend the afternoon walking around town, taking pictures, then go back and and develop them and print them. On one of my journey's I had seen this album, "The Story Of The Who". It was a Double album, and on the front it had an exploding pinball machine. I had heard maybe one Who song at that time, but it looked cool enough that it was the gift I chose for Christmas. And have never regretted that decision. John Entwistle, Bass player for the Who, was a big influence on Geddy Lee and Chris Squires. His nickname was "Thunder Fingers". In 2011, he was voted as the greatest bass guitarist of all time in a Rolling Stone magazine readers' poll. If you do another WHO song, I'd like to suggest the studio version of "MY GENERATION". The Who are my all time favorite group across any genre. I got it from my mom and dad. I always explain The Who is the product of 4 soloists coming together in a hurricane of sound that shouldn't work, but it does. Quadrophenia is one of those albums I have to listen from start to finish. So many awesome songs that actually have meaning (not to say they don't have some songs that are strictly for fun lol). I was lucky that when I was ~10 years old my parents took my sister and I to a Who concert, my first concert ever, and it was the last year The Ox was alive. I'll never forget it. My dad remembers the first time he heard a Who album in stereo, the sounds bouncing from left to right blew his mind! RIP Entwistle, RIP Moon the Loon.
You were very lucky!! I've been listening since I was 4. My sister made me memorize all the band members and all instruments each played and I have to recite it to her friends on demand. When I was twelve I saved up and got The Phases boxed catalouge of all The Who's albums to that point, for $50 from the back of Rolling Stone magazine. If you want to hear more of their heavier side, I'd recommend "Run, Run, Run," "Heaven and Hell" (live), "Young Man Blues" (live) or "The Real Me." And if you're up for 14 minutes of absolute chaos there's the live version of "My Generation" from Live at Leeds. It's the live stuff that really shows how heavy and energetic they can get.

Listening to this song makes me reminsce my past both bad and good, I have lived through a lot at age 63, drugs, lost loves, heart attack and other health problems,. like others I have lost loved ones, went through depression but I kept keepin on keepin on day after day. The good thing is after having met my wife thirty years ago she changed me for the better, became a Buddhist, quit all my bad vices, meditate daily, and my wife had me leave my comfort zone and spent time in her home country of Thailand where I gained a new perspective of life.

Happy Jack & The Who Sell Out my first album . Saw the band in 1968 at the Electric Factory in downtown Philadelphia. Saw the Velvet Underground there. Also my first Grateful Dead concert was in Providence Rhode Island in 1971 . I spoke with Jerry about sitting behind the stacks of Twin Reverbs and he said that was alright with him. I went around the right side of the stage and Ramrod pushed aside equipment cases and I was through. I went between an opening between stacks of amps and the first person I find is Bear dropping liquid acid on the back of peoples hands and then they licked it off. I stuck my hand out and he put four drops on mine and I licked it off. I met the entire board and it’s the best show out of so many. To me, as a child hearing the Who all the time ( I had older siblings and there was alway music playing in our house), I just loved the beautiful sounds of this song. As I got older, it seemed to me to be about the Vietnam War and the "blue eyed" Americans who were the supposed "bad men", the veterans who were treated so badly when they came home, like they didn't have dreams, feelings and anger.

When you have the time you should listen to the entire Rock Opera Tommy and also Quadrophenia. But if you want just a taste do Pinball Wizard from Tommy and 5:15 from Quadrophenia. Both form The Who. Check out the movie Tommy when you feel like having your mind blown. It's pretty intense.
Quadrophenia is so good, and definitely one of those things you gotta listen to in its entirety. It has a few stand out tracks, but its strength is in the album as a whole IMO.

I was living in Bridgewater, Maine, Christmas of 1979. I was 17, 11th grade. Times were VERY hard. For Christmas we could chose 1 gift, no more than 20 bucks. Now in the afternoons they bused us up to Presque Isle for a Graphic Arts course. We would spend the afternoon walking around town, taking pictures, then go back and and develop them and print them. On one of my journey's I had seen this album, "The Story Of The Who". It was a Double album, and on the front it had an exploding pinball machine. I had heard maybe one Who song at that time, but it looked cool enough that it was the gift I chose for Christmas. And have never regretted that decision.
John Entwistle, Bass player for the Who, was a big influence on Geddy Lee and Chris Squires. His nickname was "Thunder Fingers".

Pinball Wizard and Tommy are essential when it comes to The Who. My Generation, Summertime Blues are also great classics.
The Who are my all time favorite group across any genre. I got it from my mom and dad. I always explain The Who is the product of 4 soloists coming together in a hurricane of sound that shouldn't work, but it does. Quadrophenia is one of those albums I have to listen from start to finish. So many awesome songs that actually have meaning (not to say they don't have some songs that are strictly for fun lol). I was lucky that when I was ~10 years old my parents took my sister and I to a Who concert, my first concert ever, and it was the last year The Ox was alive. I'll never forget it. My dad remembers the first time he heard a Who album in stereo, the sounds bouncing from left to right blew his mind! RIP Entwistle, RIP Moon the Loon.
You were very lucky!! I've been listening since I was 4. My sister made me memorize all the band members and all instruments each played and I have to recite it to her friends on demand. When I was twelve I saved up and got The Phases boxed catalouge of all The Who's albums to that point, for $50 from the back of Rolling Stone magazine. I've been lucky enough to meet Roger and Pete multiple times as well as most of the current band they've been working with. Nice guys one and all. LONG LOVE ROCK!! 🤘🏻🎶🎸🎯
If you want to hear more of their heavier side, I'd recommend "Run, Run, Run," "Heaven and Hell" (live), "Young Man Blues" (live) or "The Real Me." And if you're up for 14 minutes of absolute chaos there's the live version of "My Generation" from Live at Leeds. It's the live stuff that really shows how heavy and energetic they can get.

Listening to this song makes me reminsce my past both bad and good, I have lived through a lot at age 63, drugs, lost loves, heart attack and other health problems,. like others I have lost loved ones, went through depression but I kept keepin on keepin on day after day. The good thing is after having met my wife thirty years ago she changed me for the better, became a Buddhist, quit all my bad vices, meditate daily, and my wife had me leave my comfort zone and spent time in her home country of Thailand where I gained a new perspective of life.
This whole album Jamal is called Who's next. All of the songs on this are hits. Pink Floyd Dark side of the Moon might be the only album to beat it.

Happy Jack & The Who Sell Out my first album . Saw the band in 1968 at the Electric Factory in downtown Philadelphia. Saw the Velvet Underground there. Also my first Grateful Dead concert was in Providence Rhode Island in 1971 . I spoke with Jerry about sitting behind the stacks of Twin Reverbs and he said that was alright with him. I went around the right side of the stage and Ramrod pushed aside equipment cases and I was through. I went between an opening between stacks of amps and the first person I find is Bear dropping liquid acid on the back of peoples hands and then they licked it off. I stuck my hand out and he put four drops on mine and I licked it off. I met the entire board and it’s the best show out of so many. To me, as a child hearing the Who all the time ( I had older siblings and there was alway music playing in our house), I just loved the beautiful sounds of this song. As I got older, it seemed to me to be about the Vietnam War and the "blue eyed" Americans who were the supposed "bad men", the veterans who were treated so badly when they came home, like they didn't have dreams, feelings and anger.
My Wife and Bargain off this album, do them! Then you gotta hit The Punk and The Godfather off Qudrophenia
