Is Discord Spying on You?

  • With Discord's updated Privacy Policy, people on twitter and reddit are having a fit. People are saying "Discord is spying on us", "Discord is recording us", "Discord is using our messages to train AI". All of this stems from a single reddit post that might have misinterpreted what is going on. What is true? What is false? Well, I tried my best to clear it up :)

To be fair here... Investing in a company doesn't automatically mean they have a direct say in all decisions a company makes. They may hold shares and therefore have a voice in making decisions, but there still can (and probs will) be some autonamy behind the company. The share holders can suggest features and changes, but afaik they can't enforce it to be done, especially when the change would break existing law, which for Discord - a company located in the US - would mean issues if they actually record messages, voice calls and screen shares without the users knowledge beforehand.
There is a reason support services through phone tell you beforehand that the session may get recorded for "training purposes" as not disclosing this beforehand would open them up for lawsuits because of violation of privacy (That's my knowledge as someone living in Europe, so the US may be different, tho Discord has in the past adjusted their ToS and Privacy Policy to follow data regulations in Europe, so this may also apply to them).
tl;dr: Investing money and/or holding shares != control over the company automatically.

Where do you get that optimism from?
When it comes to computers (including smartphones), people are generally illiterate and expect convenience. You know, they don't need to know how a car works to drive one. When some people fall for a sponsored scam link on Google and their AV goes off, they will disable the AV because "it was annoying and didn't let me do things".
We'd need to make IT a mandatory class early on, so teens grow up with some fundamental knowledge and even then we're decades behind. Corporations are better at finding new exploits, than we are to fight back.

A reminder that Jason Citron, the CEO and Co-Founder of Discord Inc, founded OpenFeint back in 2009. If you don't remember what OpenFeint was, it was a basically a social network for mobile games before Discord. Citron sold the the product to GREE in 2011, and in the same year it had a class action lawsuit brought against it for breach of contract, fraud, and privacy violation. OpenFeint shut down in 2012. Citron had essentially sold out all of OpenFeint's users data when he closed the deal with GREE.
Now is this to say that Discord is in a similar situation? Probably not, in my opinion. At the same time, I personally don't trust it, and have used Matrix/Element for years now, only occasionally using Discord if it's necessary to get in contact with someone (which isn't the case for me 99% of the time).

Also, off-topic but I'm curious; do you have any plans for what your channel will become in a universe where this Discord content no longer gets the views? I left Telegram, for example, due to having to need a phone number requirement back at a time where money was thin and couldnt afford to have one. Telegram forces you to keep up with your number because if a new user requests your number, you have 14 days to verify "this is still my number, not theirs" and if you cant, you basically get locked out of Telegram until you get a new one.

    Just a quick tip:
When you use a big platform or something on Internet, you will always have data stored and maybe used. No matter if it's discord, google, youtube, twitter, facebook, or even game clients.
You always agree to those things using your datas in X or Y way.
A.I. is taking a certain turn to be honest, I know some people are against those and some people are for those, but here it's just opinions, we'll never all agree to that, and there's not a "correct" answer to that question.
Discord always collected data, but, I might need confirmation as if it's still the case or not, but I'm pretty sure that whenever you delete a message, they have to delete it from their databases as well to respect basic privacy. Which is why reporting someone on Discord is a struggle sometimes.
Do not hesitate to correct me if I'm wrong on some of my points, but please do so with proof or something.

    2.) Don't use the internet.
Obviously making sure the website you use is safe is good, but worrying about their privacy just isn't worth it to me. The longer you think about it, the more you realize that everyone who uses the internet has had their privacy compromised, which to me, makes it less of an issue than people make it out to be. I never hear stories about people's lives being ruined or something through a company logging your messages.
To me it's just not worth worrying about anymore because it affects everyone anyways.

A lot of diffrent countries have diffrent laws of data collection, some allow the data to be completely private from government trying to obtain it, some allow the government to use data if they have solid speculation/evidence against that user to try to track down criminals, and I think some are completely government controlled (like China and/or North Korea for example)... The US is one of those countries that is allowed to see data while investigating a potential criminal/terrorist (at least that's what I highly remember from Cybersecurity class this year)... If a data breach happens, the company has to inform their users about the breach and I think some companies allow for your data to be reset/deleted to prevent identity theft or to the costumers preferences of what happens to the data when the company got breached... but unless if the data was on a piece of paper and fully burned to ashes, there isn't always a way to fully delete data (except completely destroying the storage unit, similar to the paper example, where there is nothing left to piece together, I heard a small bit of floppy disk that was destroyed was able to be recovered with all it's data), even if you delete a file, there is a little "carbon copy" that stays behind with a digital signature showing the original creator's device name and even device names of who accessed the files too, kinda like a digital "dumpster diving" of data left over
My whole point with bringing up cybersecurity stuff is to say that if your way to paranoid of your data being collected (or overprotective over your data), then I think it would be best to never touch technology again
If you read this long, I would just like to thank you for reading this long comment that I got kinda carried away with typing.

There is a clear difference between storing certain information and actively browsing and accessing it. Discord probably had in mind that they can no longer simply not store information while providing a service that actively does, but at the same time they simply removed the text indicated what they do with the information in context without granting any coherent explanation as to why and now the userbase is going monkebrain over it. But it would be messed up if Discord actually starts to access information regarding audio/video calls and livestreams.
