      They really did DLC right in RE2. 4th Survivor, Tofu, infinite ammo, etc, are all unlockable, and you really only pay extra for things like the Elza skin. That's how DLC should always be.

    If I can admit the dialogue was cheesy, you have to admit Leon's voice actor owned it and made it work. He embraced the cheese and made it a part of Leon's personality. RE4 is the game that made me love Leon as a character. He's a dork and he knows it.

      yeah... that still doesnt make the dialogue any good, i mean, its fine, but there could of been a lot more, and better. it may be super iconic, but that's a point apart and i think the remake is trying to fix this, with leon still being dorky, but to cover his wounds as racoon city would traumatize ANYONE. this is just subtly hinted at in re4 with Leon telling Krauser he fights "for my past, i guess..." its just more "realistic" in the way a character can have different... characteristics, with past trauma affecting them in some way, still kinda grieving.
      all i'm saying is i'll take interesting development over cheesy and iconic any day. (i think Leon's new va is still good)

    RE4's encounter design is a big part of what makes it so special. The foes and encounters play off the expectations the game builds to surprise you and keep you out of your comfort zone. In the first few hours of the game, the players uses the classic strategy of shooting the enemies in the head to kill them faster. Then, the game introduces the Plagas enemies. The Plagas enemies spawn randomly, their resistance to hitstun makes them much harder to deal with. You could keep yourself safe as long as you could hit an enemy near you before; with Plagas foes, that won't work.
    Once you hit the castle, the game keeps you from using headshots when you fight helmeted cultists. They're part of the entire masterful first castle encounter, where you're also kept from holding your ground by the steady barrage of catapults. Shield enemies throw off players only comfortable with their pistols. Bow-wielding foes are much more threatening at range than any enemy to that point.
    RE4's designers are well aware that open space and clear sightlines are the player's best friend, so as the game progresses, those tools are stripped away. The hedge maze and sewers choose unique ways to spring foes on the player. The castle is full of narrow corridors. Even in more open areas, like the insect hive, enemies can move erratically and approach from all angles. They also use those tools in order to refresh earlier boss fights. The first time you fight El Gigante, you're given plenty of room to maneuver and dodge. The second time, you're packed in a narrow canyon with someone to protect. Similarly, when you face a Garrador for the second time, it's when the game springs a trap on you, dropping you in a tiny locked cage.
    RE4's encounter design is unmatched by any of its rivals, because there's a clear progression to it from start to finish, forcing the player to try new approaches and explore more of the design space.

I specifically remember when the Hookman version was scraped shortly after the remake and reading thousands of comments on IGN in 2002 about fans wanting something new. When RE4 was first shown everybody loved and praised it and were glad the fixed camera angles were gone. Also people started begging for remakes of RE 2 and 3 and the original with 4's style.It wasn't until 5 and 6 people flipped the script and started bashing blaming RE4 for the series downward spiral.

      @@redplanet667 It's happening to the FPS genre right now. Not too long ago, people were asking for CoD and BF and all the big companies to move away from WW2/WW3 games and to move to something else. They move to Future Tech, and a little over three/four years pass by and they're asking for games to go back to a modern or WW2 setting. And I think we're slowly working back towards gamers wanting to go back to Future Tech or beyond. Maybe in a few year's time. Same shit happens in MMOs, too. People used to complain that MMOs sucked too much time out of the player, forcing people into groups when they just wanna move at their own pace and relax, so MMOs did that and now people won't shut up about classic MMOs and how they were better.
      In all my years as a gamer, I think the one thing I've learned is that devs shouldn't let fans dictate or alter the image they have for their games. Don't shut out the feedback entirely, but don't bend to the will of the consumer and sacrifice your ideas, otherwise you get trapped in this endless tug of war between the fanbase and you please no one.

      @@colin3ds1 Agreed, but I want to state that unintentional humor isn't automatically better than intentional. Even so, the humor or resident evil 4 is entirely a localization thing, as Leon's jokes are missing in the Japanese version. In fact, the famous "Where's everyone going? Bingo?" line was "What's going on?" in Japan. I think it's safe to say that adding the jokes to Leon's script (even if some people think they weren't funny) in the English localization made the game better. Honestly I think RE4 is one of the few games that deserves to be described as a masterpiece. To this day I still don't understand how the developers of RE4 managed to create so many fun and creative scenarios/encounters. It throws in a few elements that completely change how you approach the combat in the game such as the head tentacles and having to take care of Ashley. And it keeps doing that throughout the entire game with the same basic mechanics that you had at the beginning of the game which is insane. Think how about each encounter was slightly different, think about the many scenarios/set pieces.
    Surviving the village fight with mobs of enemies attacking you, fighting a lake monster on a boat, Holding out in a cabin, chairlift ride, fighting Mendez in a barn, going through a hedge maze at night hunted by dogs, catapults in the castle, playing as Ashley, going on a mine cart ride Indiana Jones style, fighting Krauser, fighting U3, laser hallway, cage match with wolverine, fighting two wolverines + a couple of ganados, fighting invisible insects, fighting enemies that can regenerate, knight room, getting hunted by Verdugo, Ashley's bulldozer ride, head tentacles, enemies with dynamite, enemies with fire torches/molotovs, dual chainsaw fight, dual El Gigantes, water room, and I can just go on and on and on (the castle specifically is a goddamn treasure trove). The game has so many setups, so many unique encounters, you are always doing something different that compliments the combat in the game. And most of these are sequences that were made, shown and never show up again. its insane for a game of this length to do what it did, and many aspects are still things that haven't been done as well even to this day.
    Some things don't just improve with better technology. You cant just throw money at some random game developers and have it all click. RE4 had raw talent behind it, people who clearly understood game design.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I would say that RE2 Remake took the RE4 formula and perfected it. I get what you're saying about all the different gameplay scenarios, but didn't they feel disjointed to you? Like at one point, you're just fending off plagas infected villagers, and the next, you're throw harpoons at a giant fish. Didn't that kind of feel like Mikami just thought of a bunch of cool ideas, and then did nothing to string them together?

    • @mr.rashedmr.rashed7466
      @mr.rashedmr.rashed7466 5 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      @@AvalancheReviews I thought they were put together brilliantly. Yeah there were some absurd moments in the game (such as the Salazar statue lol) but I never thought they were disjointed or affected the pacing of the game in a negative way. They also did a great job of the quiet moments in the game, you don't go from an intense sequence to an intense sequence without having a period of time to catch your breath and restock, and to explore the area and search for treasures, etc. The quiet times were not so long that the player gets bored or so short that the player doesn't have enough time to catch his breath.
      As for the RE2 remake, even though they look similar Its hard to compare them because they have different design philosophies, and they were trying to achieve different things. Both games are great for different reasons.

    Although a clear distinction has been made in terms of RE terminology, I often tell people that RE 4 & 5 (did) have zombies. At least when taken into consideration that (traditionally) the term "Zombie" refers to a reanimated corpse made to do one's bidding by way of witchcraft/voodoo magic according to the Haitian lore that spawned the term.
    The plaga being used to create a collective consciousness that maintains a horde is enough for me to fit that mold.
    Still, there's a certain charm to the modern "Romero Zombie",as they're called. Especially since they're what made Resident Evil popular and what the series was built around to begin with.

    • @AvalancheReviews

      This is true. They are zombies in a traditional sense, but since they still display such human traits, they don't have the same impact for a lot of people. For me, the zombie is so scary because of the disconnect between them looking human, but behaving inhumanly. When the ganados yell, talk and hold weapons, I get taken out of the experience. Know what I mean?

      With the Ganado/Majini, they're definitely intimidating as a horde and their tendency to sneak up on you, but because you often had such a large area and a more dynamic array of options to deal with them they become less intimidating.
      Meanwhile, being trapped in that first room in RE 1 with a single Zombie did the job.

    At least the game was pretty spooky. That more then anything else that drives home the spirit of Resident Evil. Hearing that chainsaw fired up knowing it's meant for you was a scary experience. The cultists whispering and laughing at you nerved you out. There is also the "what in the hell is going on" feeling throughout the first chapter of the game. That is also very Resident Evil.

      That's true, but RE (up until this point) was all about slow building dread. Blatant things like a hulking guy reving a chainsaw, was a little on the nose, compared to the environmental atmosphere, and horror the series used to have. You're right, but it's a different type of scare.

    Sorry, long post incoming!
    REmake and RE2 are my favorite games of all time, and I understand the mindset that RE4 isn't a true survival-horror/RE game, but I also disagree with it. I distinctly remember being tired of the overused RE formula back in the early 00s. REmake perfected the genre, but it was sandwiched between two by-the-numbers entries (CV and Zero). Then it was followed up by the Outbreak games... There needed to be some kind of shake up to the formula to keep the series interesting.
    RE4 is more of an action game, for sure, but the series had been going that direction since RE2. RE3 took it even farther with parry/dodge moves and a strong focus on combat/heavy artillery, but it was an awkward half-way point that made the game suffer and feel unfocused. RE4 is a focused (well, this can be argued), much needed (at the time) breath of fresh air for the series. I don't see it as some betrayal, and the game still has that distinct Capcom charm.
    You mention that people are wrong for praising RE4's self-aware writing, and you go on to say they are pathetically looking for ways to like the game. It can be argued that RE4 is or isn't self-aware of how cheesy it is (apparently, it was the English translators that took the serious Japanese script and made it more corny on purpose), but if it is in line with previous RE game's writing, then whats your problem with people liking it? Leon is an all-American hero, but he also makes corny jokes and comes off as a dork sometimes. Intentional or not, it certainly gives the game that Capcom charm that would only come from a Japanese creative team trying to emulate American heroes. It's not pathetic to praise a game for having that campiness. I love RE4 for it, and I love the other games for that as well. RE4's writing is just less awkward than the original RE1, but the spirit is the same.
    To answer your question "should this be an RE game?" I say yes. Even though there are few ties to the lore of past titles, I think RE4 expanded on what RE could be. It didn't have to just be about Umbrella anymore, but I like that it is still tied to the universe that I love. I have no trouble believing that RE4 exists in the same universe as previous titles, and while it isn't needed, I think it beefs up the world-building and offered more avenues for sequels. Regardless what how the series ended up with 5 and 6, I think RE4 still has that distinct RE spirit, which is hard for me to define. I can only really say when I notice its absence, and I felt the RE spirit was completely absent from RE7. To me, RE7 could have been called anything, and it would make no difference. That's another can of worms right there, but basically what I'm saying is that RE4 could only be titled "Resident Evil" as far as I'm concerned.
    Anyway, it's been over 10 years since the last classic style, pre-RE4 game. I think now is the time to bring it back, and RE2make seems to be the best opportunity for that. Unfortunately, Capcom is being eerily quiet on that project.
    Again, sorry for the long post. I did cherry-pick a few of your smaller points, but I respect your overall opinion on the game. You offer an interesting perspective, and I think for the most part, you're being quite fair in your critiques. It takes balls calling out RE4, and it's kinda refreshing. Haha. Keep up the great work with your RE retrospective! I'm quite interested in what your views of RE7 are since it is the most divisive title since, well, RE6. Cheers!

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      As someone who's videos keep getting longer and longer, I would be a hypocrite if I had a problem with long responses. Ha!
      I wasn't so much saying that people were wrong for praising what they saw as self aware writing, or just liking the comedy in general. I was actually making the same point you are. It's the same exact ridiculousness that the other games have always been known for, but the "games are art" crowd seems to give 4 a pass, as if it's any different. I just never understood people who criticized (with good reason) the unintentional comedy in past games, all while laughing a long with 4.
      I think you have a point though. Maybe I could be looking at this in a different way. Now is definitely the time to bring survival horror back. If I look at this as a phase, and if the potential is there for the series to return to a more survival horror style, I could be happy with that. Honestly though, I don't see that happening. I'll tell you what though; I would be 100 percent cool with getting a few spin offs in the classic style. If the main series stayed like 4, and I could get some side stories like 1,2,3, I could die a happy man.

    • @KeeSomething
      @KeeSomething 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Ah, got ya. Yeah, none of the writing in any Resident Evil is art, but there is always some kind of unintentional charm in Japan trying to replicate American movie cliches. I think what makes a company like Capcom stand out back in the day is the genuine appreciation they had for their own large cast of characters. They took the characters seriously, but you can tell they also had fun with designing them and giving them life in the games. This is super apparent even in RE6; though, that game probably suffers from more problems than any other game in the series. It's an ambitious but highly flawed good bye to Action Resident Evil.
      So with the end of action RE, we got RE7... RE7's level design did feel more like classic RE, but for me, that's only half of the series DNA. It wasn't a very creative game, and it didn't have the same charisma (or interesting design choices). But, I think that can be refined in RE8. And, hey, if RE2make ever does come out, and it's successful, maybe the classic style of RE will come back in main numbered titles. RE is just a weird series. I can't think of another major franchise that reinvents itself as much as it.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, I agree on re7. A lot of people hyped it as the return of survival horror, and even though it's dark and scary, it's not survival horror. I would love to see them work on the situational horror in 7. That was its best attribute I think.

  • @acex90
    @acex90 6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    RE4 is my favorite RE game from the modern generation (RE: Remake it's my favorite from the "classics"). The story isn't something creative, which is expected of all RE games, but what really caught my attention the first time i played - back in 2007 - was Leon himself. The thing that impressed me the most was the fact that from the beginning to the very end i saw Leon escaping death multiple times. More than once the game, either through one of its characters or through scattered notes, mentions how you keep dodging every curve ball that they throw at you. Everytime they said that, it felt like i was the one surviving, that all the effort that they were doing to kill me was not working because i was too good (or too lucky, sometimes) to fell for any of their traps. Yes, that might sound idiotic, but the developers knew what they were doing here. In past RE games you always survived multiple dangerous situations by the skin of your teeth, but in those games i felt like i was just the player controlling the character, now i feel like i'm on the action. Maybe it's because of the camera system that they used that made the whole experience more "immersive" and realistic, or maybe because this time around the game itself acknowledges your skills at survival, making the experience more personal, or maybe it's just the way that the game flows. Games like Metal Gear 3, Batman Arkham City and Half-Life also made me feel the same and it's a good feeling. Also, the fact that for the most part of the game Leon was infected with the Las Plagas gave - at least in my opinion - the sense or emergency and uncertainty because i had no idea what would happen and if he was going to survive. Now, none of these things can be considered as "story", but they are great tools that can be used to make you feel more attached to the experience as a whole. I know that this is a personal thing and most people don't give a fuck about these things, but i do.
    Also, i LOVED the Wii version of this game. I played the PS2 and PS3 version, but the Wii version is my favorite. The aiming is perfect. No more blindspots or dead-angles, or whatever it's called. I can shoot in any direction or angle with no issues whatsoever, even if there is a Ganado right beside me, which made the Mercenaries and Assignment Ada less frustrating for me. In fact i spent more than 40 hours playing this game on the Wii in less than a month, and i know for a fact that there is a good amount of people out there that still consider this version the definitive one, no joke. Some people can get into it (the Wii controls) some people don't. It's like Star Fox Zero, where a lot of people hated that game's control scheme but i loved it because it clicked with me really fast.

The experience was so much fun and lead me to one hundred percenting it. I could tell that this game must have been different to it's predecessors because it was obvious that a lot of the horror was gone. The lack of horror is actually what pushed me to play the older games and since a lot of the mechanics in 4 were present in previous games jumping into them was so much easier. It's a perfect entry point that really made me a fan of Resident Evil.

    You have to see this release, also, in context: at the time, any game with tank controls and fixed camera angles was getting panned because we had been through an avalanche of RE imitators doing just that. The absolutely great REmake and RE:0 were harshly critized because, sure, they looked fantastic, "but Capcom better come with something new now." There was a massive erosion in the public and the critics, so the crew here revitalized the whole RE concept, and that's arguably why the franchise is still alive today, because it dared to change.
    RE4's story is fucking 13-year-old stuff, but its gameplay is amazing.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get that. I remember the series falling out with the public, but I think a better remedy for that would have been to back off on the fast production times for re games. They had one or two re games coming out every year for a long time. I think that is what contributed to the decline, and not so much the gameplay or mechanics. I can see what you're saying though. 4 is really damn fun, I just wish they would have called it something else, and left the RE formula alone.

I also don't know if it could 100% even be said whether or not the campy aspects of the writing wasn't intentional. To me it seems so over the top that it would be strange if they really weren't trying even a little to make it goofy, but if that's the case I'd say that's still makes the dialog even funnier.
    I also equally enjoy the first game's dialog.

    Ah, RE 4, the game where everyone started thirsting after Leon. I've always thought from a narrative standpoint that it made sense for 4 5 and 6 to step away from isolated horror scenarios to a more action-centric series since Chris and Leon are far more experienced with bioweapons than when they first experienced them. You can't really do the same self-contained survival-horror thing for multiple games and not expect it to get a bit stale.
    For me, this comes out perfectly in RE 4. At the start of the game, Leon has no idea of what he's walking into and neither do we, putting us on edge as we're walking through the eerie forest towards the first house, But as the game progresses, Leon has some idea of what to expect and he busts out his campy action-hero goodness.

      @@strahinjagov The progenitor virus was what was originally supposed to infect Leon in the game. The virus would be air-born and cause hallucinations. This is something RE4 SORT OF kept, though decided to go with Las Plagas. The concept was recycled in RE Village in what is universally considered to be among the more horror centric moments that worked in that game.
      I'd argue that the 2 enemies we did see were hardly the only ones we would have encountered in this version. Safe to say that there were probably definitely humanoid enemies closer to traditional zombies. IF the RE4 we got would have been that version I say it still would have had a monumental impact on gaming. Though Cold Fear being developed as well was also using this over-the-shoulder style. So it was gonna happen regardless. OTS wasn't exactly really "new" just underuitlized at the time.
      However me personally, I would have preferred the 3.5 hookman version to what we got. It looked like a horror game and probably actually utilized survival horror mechanics. I'd take that version any day over an action packed shooter with merchants and cheesy anime moments. But that's just me.

You can't just SAY RE:1 and RE:4's writing are exactly the same with no proof or without elaborating when the game industry changed drastically between them. The accidental bad writing of RE:1 and the action movie puns that make up the humor of RE:4 aren't at all the same and if you think they are you're misunderstanding what is funny about both things. Beyond this, your idea that RE:4 isn't self aware is extremely likely to be wrong, given that most jokes from Japanese to English don't translate at all, and the localization team have to take liberties in order to maintain the tone. That's not even taking into consideration the voice acting and voice directing which is OBVIOUSLY trying to be funny.
    It's true that RE:4 pushed the series in what ultimately was a poor direction gameplay and tone wise, but this game understood why it was doing it. It hit the good middle ground of still having a lot of the survival aspects still intact while mixing it with the over the top action (and fittingly, over the top humor and plot). RE:5 and RE:6 failed completely to understand what it was that people enjoyed, and I would hazard to say a huge part of why RE:5 is so horribly received is because they took the over the top action to the extreme and played it straight.
    EDIT: I don't know your age, but your statement that the game running at 30 fps could be negative shows your ignorance to the time period. In 2005 almost no games ran at 60fps. A standard of 60 fps didn't really come around until the current generation, I'd say that it wasn't until late last generation that we were able to see games really running at that level of fidelity. I feel like in general you're playing this game looking back and must not have played it at the time, so many of your comments lack the context of when it was released.
    +
    Your hostility towards your audience ("So many of you will find ANY reason to like anything about this game") doesn't make it seem like you have some kind of critical integrity, it just makes you seem like an asshole.

    I have to disagree with you on the nature of 4 vs 1-CV. 1-CV are very much b-movie based games, and I love them for that horrible va's and all. 4 is a big dumb action movie with laughable one liners, explosions and big dumb fight scenes and I love it for it.

    5:28 - I could say the opposite to you. Shouldn't the fact that the same classic RE style of humor is kept here be a plus? How come are you using it to strike against the game and its fans? You seem to be hellbent into finding flaws in this game and even in people who like it. Again and again your complaints are unjustified and nitpicky. Yes, this game's relationship to the previous ones is kept minimal. So? Why is that a negative? It's supposed to be a new chapter. What did you want? Another re-thread of Umbrella sending monsters to attack our heroes?
    And how is it so different from what, say, Resident Evil 2 did? That was my first RE game and I never felt lost any moment because I didn't play the first one. Leaving aside the fact that Umbrella is behind the outbreak and Claire is related to Chris, there's very little tying one game to the other. The protagonists are different. The villains are different. The setting is different. The mission is different. We don't even get to see any characters from the first game in the second one (unless you count zombie Brad or the S.T.A.R.S. portrait).
    Honestly, it looks like you're grasping at straws in order to find things to complain about about this game _and_ those who are fans of it, as if _you and only you_ had a saying into what constitutes a "true" Resident Evil or Survival Horror game. I'd understand it if you were talking about 5, which doesn't even try to pretend to be about horror, but 4? Give me a break.

    • @AvalancheReviews
      @AvalancheReviews  6 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      I'm not grasping at straws, and I'm not hell bent on criticizing it. I hold this game up to the 4 or so RE games that came before it, and I judge it accordingly. When I make comparisons, it's because the game doesn't exist in a vacuum. No I shouldn't just be happy it includes some elements of RE games in it. It is an RE game. I should expect that includes almost all common survival horror elements, that made the series great. Since it does not, I point that out. Also, let's keep in mind, this was a positive review of the game. I literally called it amazing.

    • @matthewfenwick7924
      @matthewfenwick7924 6 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      This is true, when he said that “SM went and dropped all pretences of survival horror and went into a full on action game” I was like what??? It did feel like the change was too much for him and he did try to nit pick almost anything that wasn’t nostalgic... the games had to move forward and had to survive, if it wasn’t for their experimentation with the genre and franchise, we wouldn’t still have RE today alive and still changing. And when he criticised the campy voice work, I was thinking 🤔 I thought you wanted old school Resident Evil?? Nothing’s more old school resident evil than campy voice over, and it wasn’t even that lame, when I was younger and heard Leon’s snarky replies, I actually did laugh, like the “where’d everyone go? Bingo?” Like wtf that’s actually funny, coz all the people look old AF.
      Ultimately this addition to the franchise revitalised the series and To answer your question in the video, the people who do like the game like it for it’s spooky feel, diverse map, automatic difficulty adjustments, as well as the Leon & Ada flirting 😍 so fun.

    This game holds up so well today I think a remake wouldn’t make it better. A remaster wouldn’t hurt but a remake might - unlike RE 2 and 3 there’s not going to be a massive change in perspective and environment. It’d be the exact same game with encounters remove or added, and I seriously doubt they’d make it better. If anything, different people tampering with it a decade and a half later might screw up some of the encounters/pacing/tone.
    I really liked the RE2 remake, and even though the RE3 remake was lacking nemesis stalking and live select choices I know it could’ve been better if development wasn’t so rushed. But an RE4 remake is so unnecessary I think harming the experience is more likely than the opposite.

    Resident Evil 4 is the best Resident Evil game overall. The story is okay with me because Leon works with the United States Government now and he was assigned to the special mission of locating and rescuing the President's daughter who was reportedly in Spain somewhere. Therefore, Resident Evil 4 should have little or not so much to do with the events of the previous RE installments. The gameplay is improved and more realistic because you can manipulate your aim, the knife is automatic and no longer takes UP an Inventory space and the knife can be used effectively to kill enemies and save ammunition. The quick-time attack options successfully do this also. A Castle is technically a residence so that still makes good sense, and the Los Ganados are the local residents in that area so sure. The Mercenaries option is an excellent way to improve attack techniques and timing when surrounded by a large number of enemies.

The reason I say it's a good RE game is because even though it does not do virtually anything to move the story forward it brought one of the characters that we had not seen since RE2 back and basically showed us what he had been doing since then and it also brought Ada back which was how they tied Umbrella into all this. I never had issues with the scarce references of past entries, they were just neat reminders of where everything came from and how it lead to this point.

    What made 4 not only great but reach the realm of a timeless classic is how it blended its horror and more action elements both ins set pieces and locations, to its mechanics and gameplay
    Re 4 has some legitimate good horror moments from Salazars bodyguard who looks the alien from alien isolation and stalks you thru the sewers and then the boss on the suspension crates near the end and he'll even at times in the village just hearing slamming and thuds and not knowing where it they are coming from or when you hear the God damn chain saw, it's not the scariest by any means but for someone like me who is a scaredy cat it definitely had its moments
