Lamu Island is a port, city, and island just off the shore of Kenya in the Indian Ocean approximately 150 miles from Mombasa. It is a part of the East African country of Kenya. Lamu was founded in the 12th century. Lamu is one of the longest-established and best-preserved remaining settlements of the Swahili tradition in east Africa that remains today. The island has continually been inhabited for over seven hundred years, and continues to be an important center in eastern Africa. Today, I explore all of Lamu, from the beautiful architecture to the food to the amazing people that live here.

My name is Jasmine and I have relocated from Sydney Australia to Ghana in west Africa as of the year 2020.
My parents are of Ghanaian descent and so am I although I was born in Australia. Here on my channel, my goal is to give you a real glimpse into what it’s like to live in Ghana and other parts of Africa, from the food, to the culture, to the lifestyle and everything in between. My goal is to satisfy your curiosity about Ghana and other African countries.
My prayer is that these videos do just that for several African’s in the diaspora.
Follow your bliss because life is short, follow your bliss because human life has no intrinsic value, follow your bliss because everything happens for the greater good and follow your bliss because it has all happened before.
Thanks you, finally justice served.
In a two days time, Jasmine has surpassed what Kenya's Tourism ministers, Boards, conferences, miss tourisms etc failed to do for decades.
Lamu deserves this kind of recognition.
Well done Ama 👏👏
❤️❤️
I concur with you on these
@JasmineAmaa yes Empress jasmine, we will absolutely, certainly and definitely give you Kenya citizenship for sure. Because you are promote and show case my beloved country 🇰🇪 yetu in very fabulous, marvelous, prodigious and stupendous way hand down
@@JasmineAmaa you really look like my tribe Luo lady for sure. The perfect Luo name for you will be Adhiambo aka adhis due to your big butt❤😂
@@JasmineAmaa
YOU ARE VERY BEAUTIFUL GORGEOUS LADY OF EAST AFRICA
Hats off to the guide,he understands his trade so well
I'm a typical Ghanaian but l can beat my chest and say Kenya 🇰🇪 is a home of nature ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Whole of Africa. But Kenya is unique because the landmass has everything you need. From the coast to beautiful valleys, active volcanoes mountains, game parks, and great lakes, desert sands and Nairobi city.
Thank you Sir... we appreciate you
Lamu Island is part of Garissa, Somalia, not Kenya
Wow! I saw my flag on a boat at the beginning . Jamaica 🇯🇲 flag!!!! Big up and shout out to my kenya people 🇰🇪 . I enjoy watching
Jamaica has mad representation in Kenya from music to the language and culture. Big up Jamaica🇯🇲🇰🇪♥️
Jamaican culture has been well embraced in Kenya. 😂
It seems a number of Jamaicans don't understand the connection between Kenya and Jamaica😅
Jamaica has a big influence in Kenya, all through high school we used to listen to Jamaican music from Di World Boss to Tommy lee...go to the ghetto and you'll find hoods called Portmore even the dancing in the clubs has been influenced by Jamaica so yeah expect your flag when you come if not the flag you definitely see someone wearing a jamaican flag armband.
@@njengaalois The Jamaicans in NY saw the Mau Mau 'terrorists' in the press and embraced the dreadlocks...thats what I read
Jasmine you are so right about Africa, It is the land of hidden gems!
Honestly 💕
Lamu is the oldest and first Swahili settlement (13th Century) on the East African Indian Ocean Coastline and the origin of the Kiswahili language. It was inhabited by Africans of Bantu descent who intermarried with traders on the coast who came from Arabia, Persia, China, Portugal and other parts of the world.
Mombasa is the oldest coastal town started in the 9th century
@@ryukiiprimer5383 Lamu is the oldest SWAHILI SETTLEMENT. Read to comprehend and not just respond.
I think the Swahilis settled Unguja- the real Swahilis name for Zanziba and Lamas Island Way before 13th century. In any case when we Africans say we were the first to sail on earth to far away places, you get this Jealous insecure White European Fools making noise trying to dispute that
Waoo, the sunset bit view is magic👏🏽
@esem135 it was not uninhabited before the foreigners came, so it's NOT a Bantu settlement, but indeginously Bantu. Don't get it twisted.
Every country in Africa is beautiful Africa is indeed Paradise
A very special Thank You for showcasing Kenya to the World ❤❤
❤wow Africa is blessed with so many beautiful places towns and villages rivers lakes forestry and the ocean wow this Kenya town looks ancient and historic yet thriving with it people LAMU looks so peaceful wish I was there ❤❤❤❤
Lamu is the best preserved Swahili city state on the East African coast. Much better preserved than even Zanzibar. Yes, no cars or motor vehicles of any kind on Lamu Island.
Aren't there boda bodas these days?
@@blessedlove2113 Not on the island.
Coastal kenya is stunningly beautiful, I'll recommend Diani as well
Pwani is the swahili name for Coast not ocean as your tour guide explained😅 Ocean is Bahari in swahili
Jasmine, now you have seen for yourself the rich cultural fusion of the East African coastline, particularly Kenyan side. You have witnessed the influence and impact of the Portuguese, Persian and Arabic culture fused in to the local tribes to create the Swahili community, culture, and heritage. You needed to venture further in to Shella island and other islands in the outcasts of Lamu, and right in your face you would have met another slightly different community falling within the Swahili community. They have typical Chinese physiology. They are descendants of survivors of a Chinese merchant ship that wrecked hundreds of years back. These survivors intermarried with locals and lived in those islands never to return to China. There are cemetery with tombs having Chinese inscriptions. That’s how culturally rich the coastline of East Africa presents
What’s the name of that community (the descendants of Chinese)?
@@deemwenesi9718 google Chinese Descendants in Kenya 600 years on. It’s a documentary by CTGN
@@deemwenesi9718 their ship wrecked and 20 of the Chinese swam to the island of Pate and Shanga. They later married the locals and integrated
Don't stop your trip before visiting Watamu, Diani, Masai Mara and Amboseli.
💯
Yeah wish she came there
Totally agree with you.. the Europeans are the major tourists in Lamu, Malindi, Kilifi, Mombasa and Diani. They leave their countries and know about these hidden gems that we are not aware of
Ama my daughter! This is heaven. Kudos to your VIDEOGRAPHER. You’ve brought joy to me watching from London. Indeed Africa is God’s gift to earth man . By time we appreciate what we’ve been gifted…..❤

Only by those who do not know or don't care to know more about Kenya.
@esem135 There are many places in the world. You can't know everything.
@Mwomwa True. But that does not take away my point.
You have no idea how popular Kenya was from 30s-90s. Terrorism hit us hard.

We had the Climate change Conference in Nairobi and KTB had nothing to do with the overflow

I like how you don't sugar coat anything just saying it as it is.... Honesty is key
Wow, I fully appreciate this video. Usually hard to watch a 30 minute video but this has been so easy and I honestly would have watched for 2hours. Thanks Jasmine. ❤️🙏🏾
In Kiswahili, POLE (pronounced po-le) means sorry. POLE POLE means slow (It does not mean slowly slowly). It can be used in a variety of ways to mean "take it easy" or "slow down" or "relax".
Sure thanks 😊
