    I've owned a 2014 981 Boxster S PDK/Chrono for 5 years now.
I'd definitely recommend the lightning fast PDK dual clutch, but ensure to fit the alloy "Sports steering wheel" (£1,000 Porsche retro fit) which comes with the big alloy flappy paddles. The steering wheel in the video has the "up/down" buttons which are fiddly to use. It is money well spent, and is a joy to use when flipping through the gears, or just let PDK fire through the gears on your behalf. I've always been a "manual" guy" but would never again buy a manual after driving a PDK. Get full leather of you can, then when the top is up, there really is a marvellous expensive, feel good smell to the car.
With regard to mpg, I get around 20 mpg, and you won't get any more if you like to blip the throttle occasionally. Don't bother with the sports exhaust.. it just adds annoying pops, and the standard exhaust sound is superb as it is.
Some say Chrono it is an expensive clock, but it is far more than that. It comes with launch control, adds a "sport plus" button, firms up the transmission mounts, and has loads of driving stats/charts on the display (track lap times). All of this improves the standing start acceleration immensely. All UK reviews (I've yet to see a Uk performance "test" on a PDK with launch control), have constantly reiterated the same "5 second" figures, but these are for manuals, or they simply haven't tested them. My theory is that Porsche have put pressure on car mags to hide the performance of the PDK/Chrono version as it clearly treads on the 911's toes. For the "launch control version".. 981 S with Chrono, Porsche quoted 0-60 in 4.6 in their brochures, but all tests put it just above 4 seconds with launch control. This will throw you back in your seat. It is a very fast car, and Porsche always position it's performance exactly the same as the base, PDK/Chrono launched 911, but no more, as that would be really bad PR for 911. Porsche can't allow that. But, as I say, to do it you need the S with PDK and Chrono launch control.
Here are some 0-60 & 1/4 mile test figures for the PDK/Chrono Boxsters:
    981 S Boxster (6 cyl) 7A 4.2 sec 12.7 sec @ 111 mph Car and Driver
    981 S Boxster (6 cyl) 7A 4.2 sec 12.7 sec @ 109.7 mph Motor Trend
    981 GTS Boxster (6 cyl) 7A 4.1 sec 12.6 sec @ 109.7 mph Road & Track (GTS has just 10bhp extra)
A major appeal of this car is that it screams to nearly 8,000 revs - a fantastic noise under hard acceleration - especially with the top down. It is all very well listening to some videos showing an exhaust at idle, but a totally different exepience being in the cabin with the car hits those high revs. I've never experienced anything like it in another car. For example, I've driven several (2014 to 2019) 911s at Porsche Silverstone, and they just do not produce such an exciting noise - they are somehow just not as thrilling.
The 981 Boxster was a major step forward. It is best described as a mid engined 911. The interior is virtually identical, as are many of the car components. The major difference I'd say is that the 911 is unshakeable around corners (the Boxster is still superb in corners) but the Boxster is so much more thrilling, so much more fun. Maybe it's the open top/mid engine combination, with the wonderful sounding engine that does it. For me, if you want open top, the Boxster looks better than the 911. Whatever it is, I could have have a 911, but chose the Boxster instead. I'd suggest to anyone, drive them both back to back.
One final point, the replacement 718 is a 4 cylinder, but the joy of this car really is the 6 cylinder engine. Both cars are identical, other than some repositioned vents and a few minor changes to the lights and a band along the back. Once again, drive both back to back.

Hello, Great video. I've had a 981 Boxster S for 8 years. I've done just over 83k miles and loved every one of them. Mine is my only car, so I do use it daily, in all weather conditions, including snow. Servicing is 20k miles or 2 years, the average cost of servicing is £700. I would normally change my car after 5 years but, this car is so good I am keeping it. People who mock it have never driven one, when they do, they understand.

No one loves Porsche as I do. 🙂 I have always dreamt about owning a Porsche. Finally bought a Porsche 981 BS 2 years ago. I have the SportChrono package, PDK, PASM and Sport Exhaust. This car sounds amazing. I work as an electrician here in Sweden. Sad part is like you say, people are envious of eachother. Call this a poor mans Porsche and so on. This car cost 45k£ in Sweden. The big maintenance i just did at Porsche Center cost 1500k£. Thats not cheap! 😅 The people that says that doesnt know what a proper sports car is first of all and it comes from people that ownes cars like BMW 118i, 428i, Skodas and Volvos etc. There is nothing like Porsche. I have driven the 992, new panamera hybrid, macan gts and the cayenne. They are all beter in many ways than the competiotion. Simple as that.

300hp in a light chassis is the sweet spot. It's enough to be quick and usable on the road. The modern chase for horsepower is daft as you never really get to use the cars potential and get the best from them. I love 911s and always wanted one but just couldn't justify 2x the cost over my 981 Cayman S for the spec. Having owned it now for 2 years I think it's better looking and (don't tell 911 owners) handles better because of that mid engine.

Enjoyed your review - very spot on. 981s are great cars. The only fault is the top of the door cards come unglued and you get a wavy surface across the top of the card. Porsche replaces them (at owner's cost if warranty is expired and NOT cheap) with the same flawed design that will fail again. This tends to occur on cars in warm weather climates. Greta won't have to worry about that.

Boxsters may seem expensive, but they are holding value well. Factor this in to the total cost of ownership and it can work out to be very reasonable. I’ve had my 987.2 S for a year, and there are similar models with higher mileage currently selling for more than I paid.

Great review as always Matt.I have owned four Boxsters over the years. One Mk1 facelift 2003 2.7 manual a Mk 2 986 2.7 and 3.2 both manual and my last one a 981 Mk3 2.7 Pdk and this was the pick of the four cars. The sort of car you could poodle round town one minute and then change to the sport setting and launch it down a twisty B road. Also fairly practical too.I am a drummer and could take my small kit to rehearsal in it.One day I will get the 981 3.4 S that you have reviewed here…. I hope? If you are thinking about getting a Boxster of any generation then just do it.You will not be disappointed

Really good review and I’ve decided to get one!
I completely agree with the Range Rover comments. I’ve driven them for years have travelled hundreds of thousands of miles around Europe, carried huge loads and have assisted many drivers of other vehicles who have broken down, especially recently in the UK floods.
In all that time and mileage I’ve only had a handful of minor faults which have been quickly resolved.
Yet, I constantly get the “Oh I bet you know your Land Rover service manager well” or “ They are comfortable to sit in while you wait for the recovery wagon” comments. Always from people who have never driven or owned one. ....As you say, it seems to be a British problem.

Brian Bickle That doesn’t change my experience of over 25 years of driving Range Roversand some bad experiences with other brands. But it does confirm the point we were making which is that there is always someone out there who has to make their negative comment. Thanks for your input - Ive heard that one before.

@@HighPeakAutos I'll be honest, not that I can afford anything expensive or decent when it comes to cars. But I'm put off buying anything nice because of the complete and utter morons who think it's OK to scratch dent ding your car. I drive an old Volvo and for a car that 18 years old it's in not too bad nick. Apart from the nice scratch some A-hole put down the side of it. And in the past I've had mirrors kicked off, windows smashed aerials snapped in half someone walk on the roof. One day I came out to the car and there were shoe marks over the bonnet and roof. So, unfortunately I've been put off buying anything half decent because of these idiots.
