The fact that this is the best representation of the idea that you've got says a lot about the quality of this idea.

      What does it matter what race they were? Seriously, I don't give a shit what color their skin was. What they did was wrong, regardless of their skin color. The only reason to bring it up at all is to attempt to prejudicially attempt to blame white people for past wrongdoings solely on the basis of their skin color in order to further the racial divide that people worked so hard to try and end.

      @ you speak as though black americans came up with the one drop rule because to differentiate and exclude others and thus exclude themselves. I don't know if you are ignorant or just shamelessly disingenuous. The one drop rule was created by white people and codified into law and forced upon the black community in America. States used it to first decide who could be enslaved from birth, who could marry whom, what schools and public places a person was allowed to be in, what loans and neighborhoods people would be considered for. Advances in wealth and status were rolled back based on skin color and association with blackness correlated with worse outcomes from justice to education from medical treatment to job applications. Heck less than 10 years ago you couldn't walk in certain places while black without having your 4th amendment rights violated.
      So you then turning around and blaming all of black america on how they seem to be very self segregated is insane and offensive. Generations of black Americans have tried to integrate and were forcefully denied and even punished for it...
      Crap you must be a sophisticated toll. Oh well I'm feeding you anyway.

    • @AnthonySmith-gf1oe

      @ in America race is a huge deal. The census includes race as a question. Race has been a part of America since the first slave boat came. You must live in a different country. Race is such a thing that non whites must have separate TV channels to see anyone who looks like them at all. And even those channels are filled with negative stereotypes that feed the misconception of black people. As you stated " black mentality" . Thing is that isnt black mentality, it's just what the white MAJORITY run media keeps putting out in print, on screen, on air, word of mouth, everywhere. And you believe it, along with the MAJORITY of non black people it seems. That's a horrible thing that CENTURIES of spreading lies makes happen.

    • @LC-sc3en
      @LC-sc3en 5 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      @@eliasgall3089 the audience member was saying that he thought that maybe someone might consider also giving money to white people who have been hurt economically and become part of the poor class by recent market and political changes. I think the intent there was to say "well if reparations are to help make up for economic disenfranchised, they shouldn't only go to descendents of slaves." Which Trevor rightly pointed out would be a general economic anti poverty initiative and not reparations at all and thus belongs in a separate conversation.
      The reason people were upset by the question is because something like this is always brought up when discussing actually doing something for specific minorities. It usually ends up distracting from the question and implies that while govermebt policies that hurt specific minorities were unfortunate doing something to address a specific harm would be unfair if it also didn't help white people.
      For instance take police violence towards minority communities. One of the arguments you will often hear brought up is that police are often also violent to poor white communities. This is not untrue, but instead of saying "since this is true lets be allies and address police violence by figuring out how to make it better and maybe what we achieve instrides for the worst affected communities will also be usefull addressing violence towards poor whites." They say " Because this is true you are not special, therefore, stop complaining." Or "we can't have any conversations or make any progress towards doing something untill everyone ever aknowledges that problems exist for poor whites as well. And when you admit that, there should be no special action taken to address racial bias because since class bias exists as a problem everything can be explained as classism and racial bias is not a real problem to be adddressed".
      It's super frustrating. Because it os hard to win once you take the argument as a valid part of the comversation. They use it to erase the idea of the original issue. I'm not sure if people are just that uncomfortable about racism actually having an effect on people and what it might say about everyone who is a passive member of society. Or if it is because they can't stomach the idea of a minority group getting aid before all non minority problems are addressed.

    • @eliasgall3089
      @eliasgall3089 5 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@LC-sc3en wow, thank you so much for taking the time for your detailed answer. now i understand, yes, that argument seems to be used worldwide as a killerphrase to end the discussion, also often in feministic debates here (Europe). i think one reason is simply jelousy as soon as some other group might get something "your" group does not get. another reason, i think, is that, if someone isnt't part of that minority, they have heard of but never experienced themselves the perjudices and negative consequences of the many injustices. so it s easier to downplay it, if not having experienced it themselves. also, if i m not part of a minority in my country, and they start a discussion about for example racism, i d have to rethink my own role in maybe unintentionally having supportet the unfair system and having profited from it. and that s hard to admit and hard to change. another thing is, if you are not part of a particular minority, sure enough you will still experience some injustice in your life. but it will be incidental and not systematical. and then, because that s all you ve ever experienced, you think, that s the same as what a minority systematically and permanently experiences. like, when a woman who works in a typically "male" job talks about how she does not get the same chances as her male collegues. sure enough, some man will come up with that one example of that one time where he was also not treated fairly. also, he will find that one expample of that one woman who did indeed make a good carreer. so, it s possible, therefor the problem doesnt exist. guess it must be similar to what black people get to hear, when they point out the unfairness they experience. "but Oprah is black and rich". and "but there s also poor whites". yeah, but, statistically.....

      That has been the argument for reparations that I've been told ever since I've heard the word for the first time. The sad thing is there are people such as yourself that are JUST NOW hearing it.
      Edit: If you want to take it a step further, the US Government, promised freedmen reparations in the form of 40 acres and a mule to start their lives after slavery ended. The US government just never gave it when it came time to collect. Oddly, paying reparation isn't unheard of in this country. Most people know about the money the US Government paid to Japanese-American internment camp victims after World War II, but they have also paid sterilization victims from Americas Eugenics Era, victims of the Tuskegee experiment, and survivors of the Rosewood massacre. As it stands right now the US government is holding many awards for Native Americans from lawsuits over breach of treaty. One of the largest is valued now at 1.3 billion (based off of a 102 million award) to the Sioux Nation for the taking of land such as where Mount Rushmore was built. They refuse to accept it as it was never about money to them, it was about the land.

      Trevor knows. South African apartheid was Jim Crow on steroids. Both systems are outlawed on paper only. Police brutality has been the hot topic for many months, so, naturally he will continue to address that issue on his show. Also, police brutality is most certainly a major issue in the black community. It goes back to slavery. That's why we refer to cops as race soldiers. They're commanded to deal with us in a totally different way. They seek to kill, entrap and incarcerate. I'm in my fifth decade. I grew up in a predominantly black working class neighborhood. Most dads were factory workers and most moms worked in retail/restaurants or low pay clerical jobs. My mom was home until the youngest of my siblings was about 8. We rarely called the police. Problems were handled within the neighborhood. If a man was abusing his wife and family, a few fathers including my own got together and that man would be gone never to return. Same for anyone bringing trouble, major or minor. This alleviated collateral damage as only the troublemakers were handled. Sounds like vigilantism. However, that was safer than police storming the wrong home killing innocent people, which happens all too often in our communities. You just hear of a handful that make the news. These incidents are too numerous to count. Why bother verifying that information is correct! All black folks are bad and their deaths would make this world better. That logic is ridiculous. I guess all the thieving, raping and murdering white folks are still worthy of life. Even when we separated ourselves and thrived, here come the jealous, murderous pale skins burning down those communities. For them to be comfortable and content, we must live in misery.

      I've lived long enough to know that facts are twisted to fluff our opinions. Whether we admit to it or not, we've all done it and most of us will continue to do so. I do try to really listen to others and not negate another's experiences. At the same time, I won't allow anyone to minimize my own experience. I don't trust law enforcement, but I don't hate the system entirely despite the numerous flaws. I deal with people as individuals. I have high expectations for myself as well as others. When people fall short, I don't degrade them. However, I can't have them as intimate companions. My immediate family is very close. However, outside of family I have only 2 close friends. My parents taught us that you can have many acquaintances and those relationships are largely superficial. Friends are few and those are the people who share our secrets and love us despite our flaws. If you're stranded 3 hours from home and call an acquaintance, he or she will come get you only if it's convenient. A friend will stop everything and come. Even if it's the middle of the night, they'll strap their sleeping kids in the backseat and rush to get you. That's why I rarely associated with coworkers outside of work and never dated coworkers. It's easier to maintain a healthy business relationship when there are no personal dramas to reflect upon. I've seen office dynamics shift drastically when resentments from disagreements over politics and race or a bad breakup in their personal lives affect their working relationships.

From all the ethnic backgrounds, Africans were the most exploited, and I'm South Asian myself. it's funny how people love to play this game, whereby they compare other people without an ounce of compassion. Secondly, the Subcontinent & Far East Asian communities in the US are mostly made of people that had the opportunity to migrate, which is different to descendants of a generation of slaves like the African American community. There's a major setback that people like you seem to conveniently ignore, I'm guessing you're uncomfortable with the brutal truth.

      Peter Smith I disagree. I think Trevor’s wisdom was earned the hard way, first hand. It came with the struggles he went through growing up poor and “colored” (didn’t fit in with blacks or whites) at the end of (and right after) Apartheid. Hard lives create hard men. Wise men. And his life experience is especially relevant when it comes to the topic of injustices wrought upon black people. Albeit in another country.

      Unfortunately quantifying reparations would be an extremely difficult thing to do in this particular case. Each individual person who was put into slavery may have suffered differently, How do you take into account what people suffered by being forcefully relocated, tortured, some raped, forced to work in poor conditions, even killed the list goes on. Giving their current blood relative some sort of compensation may help considerably but wont change the past nor make up for it. The other thing is once they do one another will be bought forward I guess I can say Native Indians as another case to consider. The door will be blown wide open so US Government may be discouraged from doing one in the first place.

      Salma Khalid thing is, “the Native American case” as you so put it has already been handled via reservations, free college, and virtual sovereignty over their lands. Whether or not things were handled well is another question, but regardless Native American people were at least partially compensated for the traumas their ancestors went through. The descendants of slaves got NOTHING, save for an official apology 246 years after the emancipation proclamation. Mind you Japanese American victims of the internment camps were apologized to and received reparations within 40 years of WW2.
      Why are the plights of other groups ALWAYS brought up when it comes to reparations?
