Besides the "Erdogan Affair", don't forget that he just performed very bad during the WC (he was one of the worst players). Everyone loved him before he went to Arsenal, thats when his career went downhill. This has nothing to do with racism ( except for some actual Neo-Nazis maybe)

Those two statuses aren't mutually exclusive. He is an immigrant who also represents Germany* and is paid for this - just like dozens of trainers, sponsors and other members of the whole system who put their hard work and expertise into the results and into making him the best athlete he can be.
If he's also German - because an immigrant can become a German both as a citizen or as a member of the nation** - either through process of cultural adoption or naturalisation or being born to a (partially) german family abroad - although unfortunately many people of turkish origin don't consider themselves german and even despise german culture (it's not like I disagree in that regard lol) creating large colonies which are often considered by their inhabitants to be actual turkish land, so it is understandable that he might not be accepted as a member of the group by certain people who don't know anything about him BUT that he represents Germany - which is the important part for them.
*even if he's not considered to be german by himself, members of the group, nor doesn't present objective qualities allowing for attributing him to that it, he still is there to represent Germany - not himself, Turks, his family or immigrants. I know, it's hard to accept that someone from an outgroup could represent the ingroup but we do it all the time - ever heard of outsourcing? :v And even then it's not really outsourcing since he belongs to the whole system, this unholy machine needed for large enterprises (such as a national representation at a major sports event) to be succesful
**as considered by others/represented by certain beliefs he holds and cultural frame he fits into/as felt by himself

What I find interestin about the US is that there are African Americans, Asian Americans, Indian Americans, even Native Americans; but when it comes to refearing to white people we don't say European Americans, we just say Americans. Because they feel like they're the ones that ARE Americans in its esence (big lie, they have a European origin, all of them). I don't know, I'm not a US citicent, so I don't really understand. If somebody could explain it to me (respectfully), I'd be glad to listen

    • @missolympiabinewski
      @missolympiabinewski 3 ปีที่แล้ว +69

Not really true. We have Irish Americans and Italian Americans that have very proud cultural organizations, parades, festivals, etc. In Chicago there's a Ukrainian American society and a Polish American one. The odd difference is that America tends to lump people more broadly from non-European places. You'll hear Asian-American more often than you'll hear Japanese American or Korean American. You'll hear African American before Senegalese American. It's not always true. Mexican-Americans are Mexican Americans whereas a Chilean American will more likely get labeled Latin or Hispanic. Anyone from the Middle East is just Middle Eastern not Syrian, etc. I'm not sure I understand why really. Maybe we see more specifically the cultural differences among white people and have a slightly racist inclination to think of non-white people as coming from the same or similar places. Obviously there are rich cultural differences and even troubled histories between Chinese and Japanese people but often when they are both in America they are just Asian-Americans. A group identity that wouldn't exist outside of our country.

@@maialendch4001 Just a second thought. White Americans lumping people together based on race might have an organizing effect. Asian Americans and African Americans wind up having a lot in common based on how they are treated which forms cross-national bonds. So Nigerian and Ethiopian Americans are united in a group identity based upon similar racist treatment. It creates solidarity. White people don't do that to other white people which means you get these more specific ethnic and national identities. You can be a Greek-American and not just a European American.

The thing is, France won in 1998 the World Cup too and then a famous racist politician in France said France didn’t win, that he didn’t see any French players in the team and that he couldn’t recognize his country in that team. It was a huge deal back then, as those players were born and raised in France and it was a disgrace someone would imply they re not French, every Frenchman felt like he had to show his support to the team being French. Now Trevor made the same remark, years later, funnily enough from the opposite side... I'm a Namibian of German descent (my mother comes from a German Jewish trading family that left for Namibia about a 120 years ago and my dad comes from West-Berlin) and in my teenage years, I struggled a bit with my national identity, since I also have a German passport. Later, I came to realise that you're not one or the other, you are both. Also, I came to realise that national identities are not shared, so you're not only half German and half Namibian but you're a full German and a full Namibian.
Also, to the thing about their french-africaness: When I lived in France and told them I came from Namibia (they were first like where? And then I said it's next to SA then it went ohhh, but that aside) there was always some confusion like: then why are you not black? When that came on, I just decided that I wanted nothing to do with ignorant people like that. Many white people do call themselves by their national origin, especially if their family recently migrated to the United States. If you are in Chicago, many people refer to themselves as Polish-American. If you are in Jersey, many people refer to themselves as Italian-American. If you are in Boston, many people refer to themselves as Irish-American. In all honesty, the individual giving himself/herself the label is the only one that can say who they truly are and how they want to be identified.

As a French, I wasn't offended by the original joke, because that's the point : it was a joke. It wasn't funny because it's a running gag everyone already knows about and the speech was pretty lame to be honest, but it was still a joke. I took it as such since it was stated by a comedian on a satirical talk-show (context, like Trevor says). Also, it's well known the French have much trouble laughing about themselves. We're great to tease others but we don't like being teased, especially on the question of race which is a rather big deal here: the word "race" itself is racist, when in America, everything revolves around this idea. It's just two cultures who had a misunderstanding, I didn't see anything more to it.
Now, I'm still glad Trevor came back on it and explained himself. I believe the duality and nuance he's speaking of here (players being both French and of African descent) is what was missing in his original joke, so it's good that he made it clear this time. What people have to understand is that the USA and France were built upon two opposite principles. America was built upon the idea that individual freedom should prevail, but in France, society is everything. You're part of a social group that identities itself as French before you're an individual with different origins. This is why it's easier in the US for people to claim their descent: African American is an expression that doesn't shock most people, but in France, if you call someone an African French, there's a good chance you're a supporter of the alt-right party, because only them uses this argument. But don't get me wrong, it's perfectly fine to talk about someone's origin or background in France. I am of Armenian descent, people get curious, they ask questions, they want to know who in my family was born in Armenia, when and why they came to France, etc. It's all good and fun unless I suddenly identify myself as Armenian, or even Armenian French. Then they'd ask why, because it wouldn't make sense to them. Suddenly I would be distancing myself from the social group and you shouldn't do that in France.
This is who we are, culturally speaking, this is the value we share. If you're French, you must identify yourself as such. It's ok to talk about origins, it's ok to say you love your country of origin. It's just no quite ok to say you feel less French because of it.
So when an anglosaxon points the finger at our national team for being composed by players of African descent, and when this aspect is what he highlights instead of their "Frenchness", we fly off the handle a little. I think people don't have to reach common ground, but it would be nice if both countries could open their minds and understand that what's wrong to them isn't necessarily wrong to someone else, and that this is ok...
    Cheers from France!

To me, saying "Africa won the World Cup" is as weird as like Spain winning and going "Europe won the World Cup". In my mind, Spaniards are Spaniards, Italians are Italians and Frenchmen are Frenchmen. Grouping together based on continent is just crazy to me, outside of neighbouring countries I don't think I have anything more in common with another European person than I do any other person in the world.
Also, for a lot of people it's not that they want to erase the fact that their family is from another part of the world, it's simply that they have no cultural connection to that continent/country so applying a label to them is unnecessary.

Also yes, the entire concept of racial groups is a European invention but I'm not so much talking about things like Caucasian or blanket ethnic groupings, but more like an ethnic identity. I understand why this differs from descendants of slaves in America, most African-Americans today probably couldn't even find out which part of Africa their ancestors were from. When they came to America as slaves, they were often forced to give up their religion, culture and even their own names, their entire cultural heritage was more or less wiped out.
This is very different from former French colonies. While colonization is without a doubt rooted in exploitation and robbing countries of their natural resources, @geronimo0o92 is right that many African descendants in France today come from people who immigrated there willingly. Often well off citizens in French colonies had the opportunity to move to France and at that time, France did not have the same apartheid system that the US did at the same time. Racism obviously exists in France too and I'm sure French people of African descent have a wildly different experience than "white" French people, but essentially the historical bagage is completely different.

But maybe looking at it from the French cultural point of view might provide a different angle. France has had a different experience than the US, by being a colonial power in a truer sense than the US has ever been. Some of its overseas territories were and still are treated as "departments" or administrative districts of the motherland, as ACTUALLY physically part of France despite being overseas. And France's extremely secular and nationalistic system takes the "melting pot" to another level, in that once becoming a citizen it is expected that all other identity be lost into the "French identity". France accepts people from all over but wants them to basically cease being whatever they were before once they become French. And France doesn't identify its citizens by race etc, it's all just French.
It's a different concept from the way the US and Americans look at ethnicity and belonging, not better or worse, just different.

As a Camerooniam from the Bamileke tribe, the French carried out a genocide against my people partly because part of our resistance to French colonialism was the resistance to the french policy of "Assimilation" which essentially meant you ought to cease being African in order to become a model citizen of the French overseas territory. 'Til this day, we hate the french people for the havoc they wreaked on people who resisted this assimilation policy. You cannot "wipe off" somebody's origin because you want them to be more like you. Makes no sense. Some french parliamentarian recently wanted a law passed; a law that would stop people dancing at council halls during wedding ceremonies. This is definitely anti-American and outright racist as we, Africans, celebrate weddings with a lot of dancing. First I’d like to say that I mainly agree with Trevor’s point. Of course these players are french AND of African descent. Of course french people can be extremely hypocrite going from “they’re Africans” to “they’re French” depending on what advantages them. And yes the ambassador was being pedantic and arrogant.
But the thing is, racism in France takes a different form than in America .
They weren’t a lot of non white people in France before the 1950s. Meaning that to a lot of french racists think of black people as “not French”. They compare themselves to them and think that their family having been in France since Charlemagne or whatever they want to believe makes them “better french”. That’s why fighting racism in France has often been reminding these people that no matter where you or your family come from, you are french too. Fighting racism has been insisting on your own frenchness. It doesn’t mean that your heritage doesn’t matter ! But it means reminding people that it doesn’t erase the fact that it’s your country too.
To summarise, racism in France is a lot around the notion of Nationality and saying “Africa won” has always been used by racist people complaining about the lack of white in the national team. It’s not Trevor’s fault, he couldn’t have known and he’s right in the sense that it’s a good middle finger to all those that bash on Africans and people with African origins. But this sentence is a trigger to us.
Now you can think whatever you want about the way we view racial issues, but keep in mind that we don’t share the same history and thus don’t deal with problems the same way, because our problems have different forms due to our own past.
From what I know having ancestry from said place, even if you don’t know it or have never been there can mean a lot to Americans. To most french folks it’s a bit less the case. Everyone has different experiences of course but if I were to share mine I would say that my mother being from Venezuela doesn’t mean a lot to me. Sure, I care for this country. I’m interested in it. But I’ve never been there and my mother barely shared anything about it to me. I don’t feel Venezuelan. I also have an Italian great grand father and a Chinese great grand father but I don’t care either. I genuinely only feel attached to France because it’s where I’ve been raised.

That's nationalism, and it always excludes others which turn to racism. Nationalism should no longer be applicable bcz every country is a mix of people from all background (recent or distant) that identify themselves as belonging to where they call home where they live. Everybody needs a sense of belonging, and everybody deserve that. And nationalism takes away that sense of belonging from people. And that's not right. That's cruel. That's where problem starts. Let people have their sense of belonging. Don't take that away from them.

    • @pmurrTEST

It's a little more nuanced too, as from what I understand they actually DO hyphenate in France. So I have two French-American boys (we submitted for registration in France), and my wife says in France they would be welcomed as American-French. She is of Italian descent, and so her family talks of being French with Italian origins. But she says calling someone from Africa or China or the Middle East or India - places with people of color or Islam - or much more of a taboo because, in France, if you mention that they are Arab or African, because these terms are viewed as derogatory in general by French people, it's rather insensitive to acknowledge their origins, whereas that's not the case at all if you come from a white country.

See Trevor, you got it right _after_ you explained that, by saying they are African, you were referring to their _origins_ , *not* their nationalities.
But before you explained your loose usage of terms, you were semantically wrong. Indeed, when you throw away the archaic, discriminating concept of race (and the French Constitution does just that), you can only say that someone is African because they are a national of an African country. If they do not hold a citizenship in at least one African country, they are not African as per this definition.
Yes, in France the only people who claim that the football team that's won the World Cup is 'African', are the racists. They actually say *word for word* what you said: "Africa won the World Cup." - Which BTW is twice racist as only a *country* can win the World Cup, and assimilating again the diverse continent that is Africa to one single country really gets old, even in a joke, and it has the side-effect of comforting ignorant people in their cognitive biases. Sure, ignorant people are not your audience base, I give you that. But still; considering the appalling knowledge of the average U.S. citizen in geography, you should be more careful with your choice of words.
Let me be clear: not recognizing 'race' as an official concept (that favors racism and communautarianism as we've all seen it recently with the U.S. police's racist behaviors for instance) is not the same as denying people's origins, neither their right to express them. Hence, people can definitely be of *African **_descent_* (like you clearly stated... _eventually_ ) and sing and tattoo it all over if they want, no one denies it; but in the eyes of the Law, any citizen is simply French, without any (official) discrimination. This system, while far from flawless, is still the best any State has found so far to genuinely integrate new people as equals, and brothers.

Regardless, it shouldn't have been a big deal, it was just a satirical paper.
I don't know if you're American but if so, remember how it was for Muslims in your country late 2001... And a bit later, for people named "Sadaam".
Such idiot behaviors have no ground in France, because people are more used to live with each other, to _know_ each other, and to mingle.
The French assimilative model has shown to limit people's extreme behaviors; actually the extreme acts of violence are perpetrated by people living in communities (like they would do in the Anglo-Saxon model), people who circle-feed each other with the same hate speech everyday and get utterly narrow-minded. You practically don't find white supremacists showing their ugly head in France, because whites, i.e. the ethnical majority, don't find themselves living in closed communities.
That said, it doesn't mean everything's right, far from it, and racism is a big, disgusting problem in France too. But it's a much broader problem that deals heavily with education (and that unfortunately impacts almost all places in the world).

To me it comes across as France being super defensive not out of respect or defense of the players. But more about their Ego in winning a FRENCH world cup. To me it comes across at trying to white wash the culture and history of the players.
It is worth pointing out that many "people of African origin" are often washed of WHERE in Africa they come from b/c long histories colonialism. While not the whole case with this particular team as they can and DO have the ability to know just what country in Africa they are from; It does not negate the fact that for those who can't they are a representative of the whole. Trevor even goes specifically into this by say the whole of Africa rejoiced are the French victory b/c to them it was as if they also won. African culture as a whole continent is very much a thing. Large in part due to the continent as a whole being raped by mostly European nations. The problem with being so insistent that they are French first is that is just comes across as France trying really hard to not have to admit that these men ALSO have Origins outside France and those Origins involves the French being historical monsters. America knows we where monsters when we where slave traders; Europe always comes across like they wish to sweep it under the rug.

Listen, don't trust your Noah dude on this one because he views French society in a completly wrong manner.
I have both nationalities : French and Algerian. My country did a genocide in my country.
I can never forget this, and I can never forget the culture I have that comes from my Algerian roots.
BUT Seeing me as an Algerian BEFORE being French basically means to me that I'm less French than white french who have been living here from hundreds of years ago: I'm as french as them and it is not the right of my co-citizens to dismiss/downplay the work/achievements I do in France, for France JUST because I'm Algerian.
That's where we come from by saying Mr. Noah popularized and used a joke with an argument used by far-right movements, Nazis and racist people in France: those person don't see the french in me, they only see the African me. I'm not french to them, I'm African, and I'll never ever be french. And then they tell us "Go back to your country!"
Trevor said "Congrats Africa... don't tell me they're French? That's impossible!" blablabla : he only saw the African in them, just like how the racists here do.
That's why when we have a successful multicultural team like the one we currently have, we strongly want to make the point that "They're french!" to show them racists that skin colour doesn't matter when we hit it big for France. That multiculturalism is a good thing for France. That even if they're black and of African descent, nobody now can tell them they're not french, because they did the biggest deed they could.
If we claim them as french SO MUCH it's because we need successful POCs like them as examples of integration, so french POC won't need to prove their frenchness forever.
France as a nation is working hard against racism and inclusion. And people like Mr. Noah should respect that and our ambassador for standing up for us, french POC.

I love trevor and watch his show almost every day. But in my opinion he tried to change the story in order to strengthen his arguments on this one. Come on trevor how is it different than what you did?

Anyone who followed the news about the whole "African team" stuff would know that Trevor is wrong. The thing is, it's football, it's on another continent, so 99,9% of americans didn't follow and were convinced by Trevor's words.

live in France with my family as French citizens. The sad part is here, there is racism like everywhere but this country and it’s citizens made me and my family feel more part of the French society then when o grow up in South Africa. Unlike when I was in Cape Town, I have the same equal rights as the “real French” as you say... here we don’t look at the color of your skin to determine you nationality... that is why France is so beautiful, we are a melting pot... we are never going to deny our African roots but we are also French.
Apart from the fact that this event made him gain sympathy and support and he remained one of the most popular people in the country... I mean WTF ? We were collectively madder at Trézéguet and Materazzi than anyone ever was at Zidane.
Off-field, Zidane has a quiet, reserved personality, but he's always been known to be impulsive and hot-tempered whenever a game has high stakes, and he's got quite a record when it comes to being excluded because of angry moves like the infamous Coup de boule (which was NOT his first headbutt in an international competition).
But he's not unreasonable, and he's a beloved figure known for his generosity and his dedication to the game, so people assumed Materazzi had gone over the line and there was a nationwide "quest for the truth", with every possible media outlet trying to figure out what Materazzi had said to make the introverted Zidane snap.
After it had been found out what Materazzi had said, Zidane was ever more relatable (it was amazing, like a total redemption, it felt like people would have given him martyr status for having been insulted), and Materazzi was Public Enemy #1.
There was even a mega summer hit entitled "Coup de boule" ("Headbutt"), and youngsters danced to it all year. That doesn't strike me as the nationwide rejection you seem to imply.
I don't know what meme or hashtag you guys saw online, but it was definitely not reflective of the way Zidane was perceived in the country.
In 2018, he's still ranking #6 in the "most beloved celebrity in France" list, of which he's been #1 for six years, and always in the top 10 in the last 15 years...

However the moment I started to achieve stuff and get great test results, I was 'doing France a great honor'. I think that as the ambassador wrote, the players origins are individuals but the team as a whole is French. He did not say that they don't have backgrounds, he said that the team was French, as he wrote they grew up in France and were raised with French values, do they have multiple cultures, sure, but the team isn't African. And actually, France is a country that recognizes bi-nationality, I myself will be French and Canadian. The ambassador did not say that they can't be both, only that the Team, is the French team and that is the country they are representing. They can also be an inspiration for Africa of course. And as Trevor said, it's all a matter of context, you should see all the comments on TH-cam only that attack this team and denies these player their "Frenchness", comments implying that they are a sort of mercenaries playing only for the money while denying the fact that the players actually learned their trade in France and attended school in France. I don't think Mr Noah should see this as an attack towards him, it really is a matter of responding to a phrase that has been said way to often by racists. The players themselves have said on multiple occasions that they are sick of being called African while wearing the French shirt, of course it wasn't for the same reasons as Trevor's, but they still want to set the record straight. Look at Benjamin Mendy's tweet responding to a post highlighting all the origins of the players by placing them beside some African and European flags, he responded by placing a French flag beside every player's name. I know Trevor didn't mean it as an insult, and I'm sad that it is perceived like one, but people have to understand that this comment has been said way to many time to diminish these players attachment to France. You can have two nationalities in France, be from any country, but it is true that if you represent France, it is a French victory first. As for the comments about the African man awarded French Nationality for his heroic behavior, he doesn't have to renounce his Nationality, he simply can, and has, embraced a second one and he will represent France while being a fireman as he said he would become one. He will also represent his country of origin while doing so, but every action he undertakes under the name of France, is French. So yeah long post, but what I mean is, this is not an African team, on the other hand, it is a French team, filled with players that individually bring with them other cultures. That it essentially what the ambassador said.
As Obama said, they may not look like Gauls, but they are French, and for a piece on France winning the world Cup, that should be enough no ? Don't misinterpret what I want to say, I understand what Trevor said in this video and I share his beliefs as I'm sure the am assador do, but the ambassador was right to call Trevor out for his comment that can be seen as inappropriate, especially the "you don't get this tan by hanging out in the south of France part" which can be interpreted as saying that they don't look French therefore implying that their skin colour as something to do with being French. None of them are any less French than I am.

Pierre-Emmanuel Bois The point is, for Trevor to receive letter from the ambassador, its a big deal to deny they are Africans

    • @kattharsismic
      @kattharsismic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +26

stevoforce the ambassador only denied that it was Africa that won the WC and stated that the players are French and therefore France won, he also stated that each player takes his own individual background with him. He never denied that some of the players were also African. I have to say that in his original piece, Trevor tone seemed to be less about celebrating the African heritage of the French players than it was to say that it wasn't as much of a French team as an African one that won the world Cup. So the ambassador has every right to respond to it the way he did, and I think that it was meant to be read calmly as the words written are not vindicative at all. I'm a big fan of Trevor, but his approach wasn't a really good one in the original video and I didn't like the way he twisted the ambassador's words in this one, as it never was about saying that they can't be both African and French. And honestly, in France it's pretty common to celebrate both of your nationalities if you are a dual citizen and not at all a problem except in front of a nationalist or a racist which aren't as numerous as some would've you believe. But then again, everyone can make mistakes, but I think Trevor wasn't very good at owning one there and was back pedaling a bit while putting words in the ambassador's mouth. But no hurt feeling from me anyway I'm a big fan of Trevor, just disappointed on those pieces. And honestly, most of them aren't African who can become French as he said, they are French guys who happen to have African heritage from their families, they were born French. The colonization part was also a, pardon me, dick move, it is true that it originated from it, but the diversity in France is not less beautiful because of it was born from blood, quite the contrary, France has acknowledged it's faults, but worked towards integrating everybody, celebrating multiculturalism. And it is true that people do not identify by race in France but do speak proudly of their origins, be it from within France or a foreign country. A French woman born from moroccan parents would proudly refer to herself as French with morrocan origins, not African-French.

As someone who has lived in France, I can say that the French have, generally, no problem whatsoever mocking others but can absolutely not take anyone making a joke of the French or France. France is a country that tries so hard to be monolithic in subsuming all non white cultures into an overwhelming white French culture. The only time that the French celebrate their minorities, especially the non white ones, is when they bring glory to France. Otherwise, it's the African immigrants, the vagrants, the trouble makers in the banlieue, etc. There's a great hypocrisy in the French culture.

DTR DTR it is absolutely true that we are first to laugh of others and first offended, but we are not forcing a white culture onto anyone, only values that are supposed to be universal, their are some bad policies for sure, but it is not about pushing away the origins of people, it is more about sharing something as a people. There is indeed no celebration of minorities though, but no segregation or attacks either, except From racists and bigots. Plus arts, language, studies have been heavily influenced by the different minorities, simply listen to French people speak and hear all the Arabic slang French from all colours including whites use daily and realise it really is more of an exchange than you think, same thing for pop music.

The identity issue in the US forces you to mention African American or Asian American or Native American, etc. Well at least not in France were people earned the right to be called just “french” as they are without mentioning a racially profiled adjective referring to their ancestors origin…
The fact that Trevor mentions that the French squad is being named “french” instead of “African” is exactly what french society is trying to avoid NOT with the purpose to deny french past colonialism history or players origin BUT with the purpose to help with the process of integrating better immigration and fight racism.
Those players earned the right to be named french without any mention to their origin or past or being victims of past french colonialism… let’s be fair and understand those basic differences between US and French cultures at naming foreign people origins (except native people of course).

The fact is that if the french players, were only italian or romanian migrants, no one would never point this.
The only thing that made people say it's Africa's victory is the black skin. This is why it is racism. You can be black, speak only french, having your roots, family friends in one city of France, never been to Africa. You'll get ask about your origin because of the color of your skin. It's been lot of years now since colonialism, we can say that black people, asian people, indian people, arab people is also the face of the France country. And it's not denying the rest, but it's the choice of the citizen to say if he feels both French and Africa, not your choice looking on his skin.

I'm french and I understand both the government and Trevor on this one. What you need to understand is that in France, we do not embrace communitarianism as well as other countries such as the US and the UK. That is why the French government reacted the way they did (that + the fact that the argument of "they are African" is always used by the racists). And, as we do not embrace communitarianism, we always refuse to identify the players by they roots. The only people that do that are the racists, that's all. You'll never hear a French speak about someone using their origin or skin color. Hence, where in the US you can refer to someone as "African American" in France you can't do that, as that would be considered rude.

I have been watching the recent comments on this world cup from a distance and never thought I would participate in this debate. I feel obliged to say a little word because I do watch this show and have a lot of respect for Trevor Noah's work. I feel that people, including Noah, countless times refer to these players as "Africans". This is in itself either insulting, or a display of total ignorance of the fact that Africa is NOT a country. It seems like people are equating France (as a country) to Africa (as a continent). You rather speak of the players' respective nationality if you really feel obliged NOT TO say they are French. It is like saying Michel Platini is European-French (when we know his ancestors are Italian), or say Youri Djorkaeff is European-French (instead of its Russian origin). Strangely Zidane was/is never referred to as an African (but at worst as an Algerian). Hugo Lloris who was the captain of this winning team is never referred to as a European (to speak of his non-French nationality), nor even as a Spanish (his parents are Spanish), but as French. So the question is, why do this (African) origin thing only come up when the person is of a "different" skin color.
Trevor, why can't they be French without necessarily being of "something" origin? I would take your "defense" seriously if you do the same work you did on "Africans" in the French team on other people who are also not "originally" from France, but who are not noticeable by their "color". We will see how that sounds... It probably won't sell!

the US is its own world before being a nation, they don't see outside of the US itself they just don't have that kind of perspective. it's not wrong or right just a different experience and way of seeing things

Sebastian Faucon were you watching the video . Do you remember the last bit where he said some people can say stuff. Well judging by your picture you cant and i cant too. So of course your friends are going to be offeneded and in ireland(not a colonial power ) my friend whose family emigrated here from nigeria would be mad that you are trying to take away her nationality. She is a proud irish nigerian citizen. She is proud that her family has survived so much. But i do understand that i dont live in germany and it could be different there.

If they want to be only french, isn't that fine? I think it's just as bad forcing duality on someone who doesn't want it or haven't asked for it 🤔
