Since this work is truly beloved by many fans as well as the music... There are quite a few things that are concerning in the translation.
1. Suzaku is not a phoenix, nowhere close. It is the Vermillon Bird, one of the Four Symbols of the Chinese constellation. Often described as a red bird that resembles a pheasant.
2. In the Japanese lyrics, "遠く響く ウォアイニー" is simply translated to "I hear a distant echo". This is quite crucial to since "ウォアイニー" means I love you in Mandarin Chinese, as this is a love message delivered from Tamahome to Miaka in the Anime. It is escpeially written in Mandarin Chinese instead of Japanese.
3. "(I hear distant echo)
One that will lead to you
I’ll follow, near and far
(It calls me from long ago)
I find I’m mesmerized
By this other world in your eyes"
... This is a misinterpretaion with common mistakes when one attempts to translate Japanese to English.
In Japanese, it is written as
"(遠く響く ウォアイニー)
あなたに導かれて
(目覚めてゆく 魂)
光りだすもう1つの世界".
In literal translation, it means
"('I love you', echoing from somewhere afar)
I am guided by you
(as the souls awaken)
to the other world that shines through".
"あなたに導かれて" is written in a passive voice; many people would translate to "I am led to where you are", however it would be mistranslated.
Miaka is drawn to Suzaku and as she follows, she enters this world through this book with light shining onto her.
This "あなた" could be Suzaku or Tamahome, it could really be open for interpretaion... Yet, it is quite clear that this "あなた" is referring to Suzaku, as the lyrics in parenthesis are referring to the world in the book.
4. Chorus.

There is no dream in the world
We can’t achieve
I truly believe in what lies ahead"
"いとおしい人のために 今何が出来るかな？
叶わない夢はないよ! まっすぐに 信じてる"
In the Japanese lyrics, it is written with nuances describing a person is in a situation that he/she feels how powerless he/she is for their loved ones. Nonetheless, he/she believes wholeheartedly that all dreams come true (as long as they believe so).
In the English interpretation, many nuances have been left out due to the cultural differences... Japanese tend to be more pessimisitc and often have low self-esteem. In Fushigi Yuugi, Miaka feels helpless as a student in the real world and later finds herself a purpose in this Ancient Chinese world. In this world, she tries her best to protect her loved ones, although many times she finds herself incompetent.
The lyrics translated/interpreted are quite mistaken and they have lost the meaning of the original Japanese context. It is understandable that some nuances could be left out in the process of translation due to the cultural differences, however in this case, it is simply misinterpreted. Passive voice, plural, and other Japanese only context... It is quite obvious one who has done the interpretation, has not fully comprehended the Japanese lyrics nor the work itself.
The mixing is ruining the love/message that is to be delivered. Not only singing itself is overdone with auto-tune, the drums and other instruments are overpowering the singing as well. When a singer has a beautiful voice, why ever tune it down this way? It is almost unnoticible to hear the emotion in the voice due to such reason.
Since this is a cover, shall not comment on what atmosphere the artist means to give off, the music is done without the consideration of storytelling. This song is written for this anime and it is written carefully with the thoughts of the characters(especially Miaka) in this anime. In the original song, it starts with a strong "bang" sound imitating the Chinese gong(the Ancient Chinese world Miaka enters), next with the graduation of harmonised keyboard notes to show that something impactful is coming towards her... It is a unsettlingly quiet yet exciting verse until the guitar comes in right before the chorus. This choice represents a sudden change in Miaka's life and all these people she meets during her journey. During the chorus, the drumming is fairly quiet in comparison to the keyboard and the guitar, so that it gives enough excitement but not too much. The full version of the original song also has a transitional bridge with guitar solo and some sounds similar to a Chinese oboe... Where it truly unfolds the Ancient Chinese world to Miaka.
I absolutely have no intentions to bash. Nonetheless, this song is written with the thoughts of someone with a selfless heart, it is exceedingly disheartening to see all the messages and the context are gone to nowhere in this English cover.
