Thank you Ariens for this video. It is SO MUCH EASIER to see how to do these things compared to reading the manual and "trying" to understand what to do. 1) It is IMPORTANT to remember to grease the axles as you have metal wheels against metal axles with water and salt that can get on the axle(which is not a good combination). If you don't, the wheels can seize to the axles. I use Permatex anti seize on one the axles as grease isn't enough for it. 2) To anyone who doesn't know it yet, the BIGGEST MISTAKE is leaving gas with ethanol(is what you get at most stations) in the gas tank and line. Even if fuel stabilizer is used, all gas in fuel system needs run dry/removed so you don't have the problems of using gas with ethanol. At 2:09 it shows the important step of draining the gas from the carburetor bowl by simply removing the drain bolt. I do that within a week of each use.
Great video. One question, is it okay to leave the oil in the engine base while tipping the blower onto its bucket while performing these maintenance tasks? Thank you. Looking forward to taking delivery of a new Ariens Rapid Trak next week.
I brought one two years ago and I didn't know anything about how to maintain it but I need that a fuel stabilizer didn't come with the machine and I also need the oils and stuff that are recommended to use so I can start doing my maintenance in March

I would put some kind of canned fuel trufuel VP if leaving gas inn the blower all fuel stabilizer or not will eventually go bad or run it dry drain the carb and spray a little fogging oil down into the cylinder pull the cord a few times cover it and put it in a cool place.
Can you summarize the Ariens snow blower letting the engine to run 5/10 minutes until runs out of gasoline( tank and carburator too, then drain the few drops left in the carburator) or you think that the tank and fuel sistem are better protected by adding stabilizer before summerizing the snowblower in the fuel like in this video??? Please advise .....Thank you
I have run ethanol free gasoline with Sta-Bil fuel stabilizer for years in all my gas powered equipment and never have engine problems. The Einstein who decided to cut gasoline with Ethanol should be taken to the woodshed. Nothing but a moisture magnet and sugar when it breaks down, fouling up engines.

I stabilize the ethanol free premium gas and leave the tank full all summer long, new gas in the fall .. I run my blower once a month on cool mornings same as I do for my generator. It just keeps working. I also carefully prime paint the bottom edge of the front chute, about a quarter inch deep .. where it gets slightly scuffed each season. Cheers ...
When the fuel tank is full and the fuel valve is closed, is it possible to place the snowblower in the service position without any spills? I have a Platinum 24 SHO. Thanks!
I enjoyed this video. I bought an old 1983ish sno Thro with the Tecumseh 2.7 hp motor. Runs ok but not the best. Doing an engine swap on it to get many more years of service!
I leave the wheels on until after I replace the bottom cover. Its easier to turn the gears by turning a wheel than by gripping the greasy axle by hand. After the bottom cover is buttoned up I do the axle maintenance. I also oil the cables and change the engine oil. I prefer emptying the gas tank and carburettor after using stabilizer in the last tank of the season. The other method is to fill the tank with stabilized gas. That way the fuel is less affected by temperature changes sucking in moist air during the off season leading to potential condensation. My local L&G recommends using premium gas, not for the higher octane level but because it doesn't contain alcohol. A shot of grease in all the zirks listed in the owener's manual is also a good idea. The final area is to grease the chute where it rotates and oil the control levers at the operator's position.
I like to leave my choke on so critters can't get in there too.. Sea Foam was first made to stabilize the gas in 1942.. its still one of the best..plus is cleans as it stabilizes.
Thanks for your reply. Those are my steps that I follow : During the winter season I NEVER USE STABILIZER, but I keep my Ariens Deluxe 24 tank and carburator ALWAYS EMPTY ( unless it snows for 2/3 days at the time), letting , after use, the engine run for 5 minutes to burn the remaining fuel. I never use the on/off button..I keep it on all times .. And I buy every 2 weeks one gallon of FRESH Fuel adding 0.5% carburator and valve cleaner, that , if not used in the snowblower, after 2 weeks I fennel into the car . I use stabilizer ONE TIME only at the end of the season, running the engine 5/10 minutes until runs dry , drain the remaing fuel from the tank and the carburator drain bolt. What is your advice ?? Are my steps correct ?? Thanks
Thanks for the question, and no it is not! Our operator's manuals and service guides instruct the user to drain the fuel tank before placing the unit in the service position.
@@AriensChannel ok. Thanks. Your video really gave thile impression to me I could treat fuel, run engine, shut off the fuel valve and tip into service mode..
@@AriensChannel "pump grease into the end of the pinion shaft" at 4:12. Pretty vague. On my model that can quickly make a grease mess inside where you got done emphasizing no grease or oil on the drive pulley.. I used to just give a few pumps each year on mine before ever removing the bottom access panel. In my opinion grease should be shot in there early on and watch where and how it comes out on the inside so you can catch and clean up right away and then proceed with internal steps.. Just passing on my 2 cents for next video. :)
Just FYI the clips that retain the screws to the access panel are made of chinesium. 2 of the 4 of them were cross-threaded from the factory for me and could NOT be re-installed. I bought my own replacement clips which made this job take 15 minutes instead of 2 hours fucking around with the original hardware clips.
I simply let the gas run low then pump the remaining gas into my mower. Then I run the snowblower until all the fuel is used up. My Ariens snowblower is 12 years old and every year it starts right up!
Yep, same same, I DO put the choke on when the engine starts to sputter (almost out of gas); when the engine stops, I pull the the starter handle a few times until it's completely out of gas.
I hear storing with a dry tank may lead to dried out gaskets which then crack and no longer seal properly which is why it's better to store with a full tank of ethanol free stabilized gas in the off season. Wonder if that's true?
@@dbsean Not true, old gas can thicken up and become stale if sitting for long periods. Dried out gaskets can happen if they are not used for extended times like 10 or more years but fuel lines may become brittle with a full tank or not.
To drain the the fuel from the carburator ball ( video at 2:17 ) you need to unscrew one bolt. On my Snowblower Deluxe 28 SHO there are two bolts under the carburator ( one vertical in the middle and one at angle of 45 degree). Which one is the right to drain ? Thanks Sylvain
Does it matter to drain engine oil pan out before putting snowblower in the service ? Or not draining at all has no consequence on the engine motor ! Thanks
I always pull plug and add a little oil in cylinder and pull cord I full stroke. Been doing this for 15 years. Pretty sure that was in my owners manual. All oil burns off when it starts for the first time next winter
Not necessary for our newer models, but hey, as long as it works for you, then why not! Good note here for everyone to always follow the instructions in their engine manuals and operator's manuals when completing maintenance and service.
When I put my Ariens Hydro Pro 36 into the service position, gas leaks out around the gas cap. Do I have a faulty cap or do I have to drain all the fuel out first?
Hi Ariens crew. Greetings from Norway. I just purchased the HydroPro 28 EFI, my third machine since 1980. Instead of using fuel stabilizer, I like to run alkylate fuel (Aspen 4) through the system. Please make a video on how to put a blower with hydrostatic drive into storage as well.
That's actually the best practice. Just remember to start the engine after draining the tank, allowing the engine to use the remaining gasoline in the fuel lines and carburetor. Let it run until the unit stops on its own -- this is called "running dry."
I totally agree. I just bought one. Axels dry, bushings dry, splines dry, chain dry. There was a small amount of grease on the gears. Glad I checked and properly lubed everything before running it. It would have been a rusted mess after the first season. For such a well designed machine it amazes me that they overlook that critical step. Maybe back in the day, the dealers would make sure that stuff was taken care of before delivery. Unfortunately today that isn't the case. Mine was delivered with slack cables and the drive adjusted way too fast. I don't mean to sound overly critical. I think it is a great product and great company. I just wish they would pay more attention to the little details that are critical to it performing reliably.
Thanks for asking! Even though EFI models have "sealed" fuel systems, meaning oxygen doesn't access the system, we still recommend adding fuel stabilizer to the tank at the end of each season. Oxidation or not, gasoline's "flash point" can deteriorate over time. Adding a quality fuel stabilizer to the tank will both help prevent oxidation and preserve the flash point. After adding the stabilizer, run the engine for a few minutes to circulate it through the fuel system. Other than that, the lubrication in the tractor, on the axle shafts and to the augers is identical between EFI and carbureted models.
Does red n tacky grease work? Looks like your using as well. Red n tacky is good for up to -22 degree ferenheit which we never get in western Massachusetts
Thanks for asking! We only recommend using Ariens OEM high-temp grease, which can be purchased through your nearest Ariens dealer, or at the Ariens online parts store: www.ariens.com/en-us/part/00036700
All went well until I tried screwing the bottom cover back onto the frame. Only the two top screws were willing to be seated. Those screws would not grab no matter what I did. I could not even get the screws seated without trying to attach to the frame. I’m guessing those clip/nuts are easily damaged and need replacing...
Thanks for asking, Aarron. Both are just as effective. If you plan on draining the tank / fuel system completely, still stabilize the fuel before doing so because there's the chance that not all fuel residue will be eliminated from the unit if it's drained and "run dry."
Thanks for asking! It's good practice to change the oil now so you don't forget to do it before next winter, but it's not technically necessary to complete before putting your unit into storage. In any case, just make sure you're changing it at least once per season.
Thanks for many good movies Ariens! Would it be possible to get into details about maintenance of models with tracks instead of wheels? In particular the modell 920318. Should I remove the tracks or just oil where I can ?
You're very welcome, Andreas! We'll be producing more in the future. We don't have any videos specific for model 920318, but we linked the operator's manual below. The oil / grease points for your model are listed on pages 15, 16 and 17. I bought the Ariens EFI engine because it advertised that you do not have to drain the gas because it ha no carberator and will start even if you don't drain it. I hope it works as advertised.
That’s better than ethanol fuel with stabilizer. Yes you’re fine to do that, better than fine actually, that is the best thing you could do besides draining the whole system
Close the gas valve and drain the carburetor bowl at the lower off-center 10mm bolt, after each use of the snow blower. This way the emulsion tube stays always dry - if the bowl is full, the emulsion tube stays submerged and will clog and cause no-start. If you also want to get rid of the old gas inside the tank, then open gas valve, release tank cap, drain the bowl - it will drain 95% of the gas in the tank. On the bottom of the tank there will remain about 1-2oz of gas stuck which cannot be drained (fuel hose connects slightly above the bottom of the tank). Next time you add fresh gas, this ounce of old gas will mix with the fresh one and run just fine. By the way, if blower won't start, drain the bowl a bit, it will clear the emulsion tube. If start is still difficult, need to remove the emulsion tube, pass a sewing needle through all tiny holes (including center hole ones). And from now on keep the emulsion tube dry when blower is not in use. Modern emulsion tubes have much smaller holes - for better burning - these holes get stuck from old gas much faster.
I have a 3 oz grease gun and two Lucas Oil grease cartridges. One is the Heavy Duty grease in the green tube. The other is Red N Tacky (w/ anti-seize) in the red tube. Which one should I use?
Hi, I have a Deluxe 28 but will switch to a Platinum 28 SHO and I wonder if snow house connections and gearbox between the two models are similar and interchangeable. (I'm going to keep the old house to be cheaper to trade) By "old house" i mean the house of the Deluxe 28 model. Regards, Flavio.
My garage smelled of major gasoline fumes and I figured out it’s coming from my deluxe 28 SHO. There is no visible gas puddle under the machine. I had to move it outside it was so bad. Always have the fuel shut off. Only use non oxy fuel. I even add sea foam to it. Not sure what’s going on but I’m annoyed. It’s a 2016 not that old.
Hi Trey, we're sorry you're experiencing that issue with your Ariens Sno-Thro. Our best suggestion would be for you to take your unit to your nearest authorized Ariens servicing dealer. They'll be able to diagnose and resolve the issue. If an issue exists and your unit is still within the three-year warranty period, we'll stand behind our warranty promise 100 percent. Find an Ariens dealer near you at the link here: www.ariens.com/en-us/dealer-locator
I have the same model. There’s a problem with the gas cap and the rubber gasket. It’s more of a hassle to bring it to the dealer than it is just to buy a new gas cap unfortunately...
Thanks for asking, Garry. As long as the fuel was pumped less than two weeks ago, add a quality stabilizer to the fuel according to the directions on the stabilizer bottle or packet. Be aware that the amount of stabilizer you add to the tank depends on the amount of fuel in the tank (the correct ratio will be listed on the stabilizer bottle / packet). Then, run the engine for about five minutes to ensure the stabilized fuel is incorporated throughout the entire fuel system, close the fuel valve to allow the engine to "run dry" stop on its own. If your fuel is older than two weeks from the time it was pumped, we recommend draining it, then adding some fresh fuel to the tank and stabilizing according to the instructions above. Hope this helps!
Thank you very much for your video. I have a question. I just bought the brand new ariens deluxe 24' 2 weeks ago and put it in the garage. After starting the engine for the first time, I would smell a strong gas-like smell every morning when I opened the garage door. Is there something wrong with the machine?
Hi Terry. Even though your EFI fuel system is sealed and less prone to fuel oxidation issues, we still recommend adding a quality fuel stabilizer to your tank before storing. Also, remember to charge the battery under the dash panel once every 3 months (no more than 48 hours at a time) while in storage. More details can be found in your operator's manual. We found some fuel stabilizer you can purchase online: parts.ariens.com/fuel-stabilizer-powder-00592900-p/00592900.htm
Terry, with my efi, along with the fuel stabilizer, I take the spark plug out and add half a teaspoon of good oil directly to the cylinder, replace spark plug, and then cycle the piston a few times with the pull rope but don't start it. I do this because I store it in a simple lean-to shed outside that can get very humid, and the oil prevents rust from forming in the cylinder. Honda manuals recommend this procedure for winterizing their efi boat outboards. If you store in an attached garage, this shouldn't be necessary though.
Is it better to store my Ariens with fuel in the tank that has been treated with stabilizer or is it better to run it dry and store without any fuel in the tank?
Either method is acceptable, just as long as you FIRST run the engine with stabilized fuel so that gasoline flows through the entire system. For extra assurance that your unit will be ready to go without fuel-related complications next season, drain the stabilized fuel after running it through the system and then run it dry.
Thanks for asking. There's really no "break-in" period, however, you will want to do the first oil change earlier than the regular oil change intervals. The engine manual for your unit will specify - some engines require the first oil change after a certain number of hours, some after the first month. In any case, refer to the engine manual. If you tell us the model number of your unit, we'll be able to give you a more exact answer.
@@AriensChannel thanks for your help I have the 2018 ariens platinum 24 model 921050, so best break in and would also like to know your opinion on storing for a whole year. Is it better to COMPLETELY DRAIN(even removing carburetor bowl) or leave full with a a non ethanol gasoline.... AGAIN THANKS FOR YOUR HELP
@@eddiekytia you're very welcome! According to the engine manual for that model, you should perform the first oil change after the first month of use. Also, we recommend either draining the fuel system completely or adding a quality fuel stabilizer to your gasoline before storage. Read details on proper snow blower storage procedures in a blog post we published last season: www.ariens.com/en-us/company/blog/how-to-store-your-snow-blower-for-the-summer-2019
@@eddiekytia Did some serious research with the engine manufacturer. Change the oil after the first month or the first two (2) hours of operation...called "break in period".
If one plans to ''run the motor dry' as is recommended by the engine manual, and it states to use ethanol-free fuel to do so, which isn't always available, can you put a few ounces of seafoam only and run it dry with that? Then empty the bowl.
Great video, thank you. I have a new Ariens 24 Deluxe. No snow yet this year, but it is ready. When winterizing my outboard motor I always use fogging oil in the air intake until it stalls. Then I drain the carburetor bowl. I also remove the spark plug and put a few drops of oil into the cylinder bore. I rotate the engine by hand to spread it out along the sides of the bore and rings. Would I just be doing unnecessary work or is this a recommended extra step.
Good question, Mike. No concerns here, but for extra assurance, wait about 30 minutes after returning your unit back to the operating position before starting the unit. Other than that, your unit is designed to be tipped into the service position - just drain the fuel first.
Thanks for asking, Ganesh! We recommend using Ariens hi-temp grease, which is a lithium-based grease. You can purchase it at the Ariens online parts store in the link below: parts.ariens.com/Premium-Hi-Temp-Greese-14-Oz-p/00036700.htm
Great info, best vids since your company has been making them. My one question: Should the unit now be stored on blocks off its tires? Have A Happy Spring!
Thanks for the feedback! Though we did not cover that in this video, removing the wheels and placing the unit on blocks is recommended in the operator's manual.
@@MrBangor thanks for asking, Neal. The false-fill cup is equipped in our fuel tanks to help prevent the risk of overfilling your gasoline tank. It sits slightly lower than the fuel tank filler hole opening so it appears that the tank is full, when it still has remaining capacity. Again, all for the purpose of helping our operators stay safe and preventing them from overfilling the tank.
I've always run aviation 100LL in all toys and workhorses....including my Honda VFR 700 and, of course, my Ariens 28" snowblower. Yup, more expensive but I've NEVER had a fuel problem with any of them. No storage issues either.
Can you leave the gas tank empty. What about some white grease on the chain and shaft. My starter stopped working after the second time I use my Ariens 24". Not happy that I had to buy a new starter. Never buy another one! I could pull my arm out of its socket before this would start, will not start without that starter. Very unhappy with this Ariens snow blower.
Thanks for asking, Stanley. Yes, you can drain or use up all the gasoline from the tank and leave the tank empty. However, we still recommend adding a quality fuel stabilizer to the tank and running the engine to get stabilized fuel throughout the entire fuel system before draining the tank. Even if you drain the tank, there will be residual fuel left in the carburetor and fuel lines, and if it's not stabilized, it could oxidize and turn into a gel while your unit is in storage. Also, we recommend lubricating the chain with an oil, and lubricating the gears / shafts with Ariens hi-temp grease (linked below), according to the instructions in your operator's manual. www.ariens.com/en-us/part/00036700 Finally, please remember that you experienced that starter issue while your unit was still within its warranty period, its replacement is covered as long as your Ariens dealer determines it's a result of a manufacturing defect. You can find an Ariens dealer using the link below: www.ariens.com/en-us/dealer-locator
Thanks for asking. Cubic centimeters (cc) is the engine displacement, or the total volume of space which the engine pistons travel. More displacement equals more power. The smallest engine displacement in our lineup today is the 208cc engine offered on all Path-Pro and Professional 21 models.
I see they never answer these kinds on questions, they told me to bring it in to one of there service centers to get fixed for $$$$ ! I would ask JB on th-cam.com/video/cV6lvcrq26o/w-d-xo.html
Tbh the stabilizer is just asking for trouble between people not mixing at the correct ratio or leaving the machine for +1 seasons without running. Run it dry and forget about it. Shut the fuel valve off and if there is any residue in the tank, dilute it with fresh fuel before turning it on the next year. 🎉
Hi Tony! What type of video were you looking for? The storage procedure between all models is pretty much the same, however, there are a couple differences in the RapidTrak model compared to the one in the video. You'll need to remove tension from the tracks and remove the track drive wheels to access and grease the axles. You'll be able to find instructions for that procedure in the service guide for your unit. See page 61: apache.ariens.com/manuals/05136630B.PDF Hope this helps!

You sure can, but we still recommend adding stabilizer before doing so. This ensures all fuel residue is stabilized, which helps prevent it from gumming up and clogging your fuel system.
@@serruhattn Our best suggestion is to look at the specification page in the back of your operator's manual to find your unit's fuel tank capacity. Then, fill the tank nearly full with fresh gasoline - when it's full, you can know for certain how much fuel you have in the tank, allowing you to have a more accurate calculation for your fuel-to-stabilizer ratio.

Thanks
Is it safe to rotate into service position with fuel still in the tank ??
Thanks for the question, and no it is not! Our operator's manuals and service guides instruct the user to drain the fuel tank before placing the unit in the service position.
@@AriensChannel ok. Thanks. Your video really gave thile impression to me I could treat fuel, run engine, shut off the fuel valve and tip into service mode..
@@bigdago780 thanks for the feedback! We'll remember your comments in our upcoming videos to ensure draining the fuel is mentioned.
@@bigdago780 good feedback! You are correct that a few pumps will usually do the trick.
Can you say what replacement clip size and where to buy them please?
I simply let the gas run low then pump the remaining gas into my mower. Then I run the snowblower until all the fuel is used up. My Ariens snowblower is 12 years old and every year it starts right up!
Yep, same same, I DO put the choke on when the engine starts to sputter (almost out of gas); when the engine stops, I pull the the starter handle a few times until it's completely out of gas.
Anti seize is better on the axle shafts.
Thanks for asking! Loosen the angled screw to drain the carburetor. The other screw holds the bowl on the carburetor.

I do the same :)
Is it ok if I drain gas out of tank and leave it empty
That's what I do and have had no issues with it.
Shawn Patton. I thought so too thanks
That's actually the best practice. Just remember to start the engine after draining the tank, allowing the engine to use the remaining gasoline in the fuel lines and carburetor. Let it run until the unit stops on its own -- this is called "running dry."
How to replacements ignition coil Ariens deluxe 30
It would have been great IF Ariens put grease on the axle before shipping
Do you have maintenance instructions for EFI models?
@@AriensChannel What about the battery for EFI's? Do I need to periodically charge the battery during the summer?

All went well until I tried screwing the bottom cover back onto the frame. Only the two top screws were willing to be seated. Those screws would not grab no matter what I did. I could not even get the screws seated without trying to attach to the frame. I’m guessing those clip/nuts are easily damaged and need replacing...
Good Job Mr. Aabler
What would you recommend if I get oil onto the drive pully?
Thanks for asking, Liam. Try using mineral spirits to break up the oil and wipe it from your drive pulley.
So you recommend this over empty the tank for seasonal storage?
Thanks for asking, Aarron. Both are just as effective. If you plan on draining the tank / fuel system completely, still stabilize the fuel before doing so because there's the chance that not all fuel residue will be eliminated from the unit if it's drained and "run dry."
There’s a chance with an empty steel fuel tank that it could rust if it’s left empty. Obviously not an issue with plastic fuel tanks.
I have only ever used Stabil treated gas in the engine (all winter). When do I change the oil? Now or in the Fall?
Thanks for asking! It's good practice to change the oil now so you don't forget to do it before next winter, but it's not technically necessary to complete before putting your unit into storage.
In any case, just make sure you're changing it at least once per season.
What size is the bowl nut?

I bought the Ariens EFI engine because it advertised that you do not have to drain the gas because it ha no carberator and will start even if you don't drain it. I hope it works as advertised.
Greetings! Is it ok to just use the TruFuel (ethanol free) for my Ariens without treating that with stabilizer? Thanks
That’s better than ethanol fuel with stabilizer. Yes you’re fine to do that, better than fine actually, that is the best thing you could do besides draining the whole system
treating the gas and draining that little bit from the carb are the 2 most important things

If you leave the fuel tank empty are risking rust on the inside of the tank ? Or will stabilizer prevent rust thanks .
Just don't use the cheap gas at the gas station. Use premium only.

I already have a little gas in it without the stabilizer what should I do to run the gas out
Thanks for asking, Garry.
I have Deluxe 30 EFI. Any winterizing that needs to be done for this system?
If you store in an attached garage, this shouldn't be necessary though.
tercelfish00 thanks for your insight! Great information!
@@AriensChannel thank you!
What's a proper break in for a brand new ariens platinum 24 snowblower
Thanks for asking. There's really no "break-in" period, however, you will want to do the first oil change earlier than the regular oil change intervals. The engine manual for your unit will specify - some engines require the first oil change after a certain number of hours, some after the first month. In any case, refer to the engine manual. If you tell us the model number of your unit, we'll be able to give you a more exact answer.

If one plans to ''run the motor dry' as is recommended by the engine manual, and it states to use ethanol-free fuel to do so, which isn't always available, can you put a few ounces of seafoam only and run it dry with that? Then empty the bowl.
Thanks for asking. We recommend against using Seafoam only. You'll need to have a gasoline / stabilizer mixture.
Great video, thank you. I have a new Ariens 24 Deluxe. No snow yet this year, but it is ready. When winterizing my outboard motor I always use fogging oil in the air intake until it stalls. th-cam.com/video/cV6lvcrq26o/w-d-xo.html
