      On a much steeper hill would you increase the engine revs?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might increase the engine speed to 2000rpm for really steep hills - but no more as it might increase clutch wear.

      Why to drive manual car when you can have automatic??! It is much simpler and safer. Manual cars are a pain, totally useless effort once we can all drive automatic cars. I drove manual for 5 years and then I’ve tried automatic. Never wanted to go back again though I had recently to buy a manual car in Bulgaria where automatic cars are hard to get. In U.K. I drive automatic of course.

    Thanks. I passed my test a while ago but I'm not confident on hill starts after having a big problem once on a steep hill and it's been my biggest mental block to driving. I haven't been giving it much gas before taking my foot off the clutch. I tend to go more clutch first. It generally works but it always feels kind of touch and go. I'm gonna try this. I wish I was made more aware of this issue of what revs you start from on my lessons.

  • @mohammeda7731

    For me it’s not the fear of stalling on a hill it’s rolling back on a hill. I usually don’t stall on a hill but usually roll back even by a tiny amount or a big amount. I’ve been trying to master this technique when using in the hill.
    Plus a good tip is lift the handbrake even more than needed compared to a normal gradient allowing the parking brake to hold on. I used to bring the handbrake till I could hear one or two clicks but my car rolls back so I have to pull it even more so that I can be stationary on hills and allow me to get the biting point and gas quickly.
    Usually, it’s the biting point where I have not been getting on a hills which causes me to roll back.

    At the moment, I am struggling with going upwards on a constantly stopping and slow moving busy uphill. I keep using the handbrake but I know that some people do this manoeuvre by balancing the clutch and the accelerator. Please can you tell me how this works in steps as I feel embarrassed constantly using the handbrake and revving the engine too much to keep moving forwards. Mostly though, it can be dangerous if I don’t get good at this.

    Hi there I have a question when going downhill is it important to hold the biting point till the walking pace because already the car is moving due to the effect of gravity I really don't understand that part could you please help me with this please

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just pull away normally, and lift the clutch at about walking pace as you would on flat ground. It's important not to coast too far with the clutch depressed, as the car would be free to roll downhill on its own. Engaging the clutch will help us to control the car speed safely.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We would use the handbrake or foot brake to hold the car on the hill. Using the clutch like that will overheat it and cause extra wear so is best avoided.

  • @oskarumesh2394
    @oskarumesh2394 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Dose not cluch get damaged when we hold it on bitting point while hand break is on and accelerate padel is also pressed ? What I do is on hills I raise the clutch to the bitting point while pressing the brake pedal without using hand break and then give gas . Other thing is handling the steer wheel by one hand on very busy hills very dangerous. It is not easy as you showed in these videos.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      As long as the engine revs are low and the clutch is only biting for a few seconds there will be no excessive wear. However if you ever smell a burning aroma you know you overheated your clutch and shortened its life!

      The speed you can climb a hill, and what gear to use depends on many factors - such as the engine power of the vehicle, the gearbox ratios, the weight being carried, and the steepness of the hill. The only way to find out is to try - if you can't build up enough speed to change up a gear, then don't!

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool

      On steep hills we normally prefer to use the handbrake, as we can get more engine power to move away easier. This video might help: Clutch control on steep hills: th-cam.com/video/RiS4wbi5AC0/w-d-xo.html 👍🏼

      Thank you for replying. I have another question.
      So i moved from a horizontal ground to an uphill. Then i decided to stop on the hill so i pressed down clutch and footbrake. I also had the handbrake *fully* pulled. But i couldnt release the footbrake yet bcos if i did, the car would have rolled backward. Why is that? Even handbrake already maxed, the car still requires footbrake to prevent itself from rolling backward. Is it bcos probably i was in free gears? How to come to a complete stop when on uphill?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      When applied, the handbrake should be able to easily keep the car stationary on a hill - even a steep one. I'd suggest that yours needs some adjustment! In the meantime if you need to park on a hill you could leave the car in gear, or turn your front wheels so they rest against the kerb.

    I'm fairly new to driving, and I've been using the half clutch method. I know I should practise using the handbrake, especially since I get edgy when I start on really steep roads. I found your video very informative, but I wanted to clear a doubt. Once we're ready to do a hill start with the handbrake engaged, how do we know how much to rev the car? I think the question applies to the half clutch method too. I guess you know with practice, but sometimes I rev it too much, causing the car to roar. That's a bit as much embarrassing as stalling for me. Can you kindly give me some pointers?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If you watch the car’s rev counter you can see we use about 2000rpm. This provides enough power without any risk of overheating the clutch. Stay tuned for a separate video showing how to do hill starts without using the handbrake.

    • @thesurrealist9583
      @thesurrealist9583 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AdvanceDrivingSchool Thanks for the reply. I was wondering whether the rpm needed varies depending on the incline, so would a steeper hill require more than 2000 rpm? I guess it's a matter of feel, correct me if I'm wrong. I just wanted to know if there are any cues I should look out for. Will definitely check out your upcoming video!

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      As long as we don't use too much clutch bite, about 2000rpm should be plenty of power for most situations. However, if the hill is really steep, then a bit more power might be useful. With experience you'll find it gets easier.

      I'm wondering that what kind of operation condition will damage the clutch?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Slipping the clutch for some time (especially with higher engine revs), or engaging (or ‘dropping’) the clutch at high revs to wheel spin the car will wear the clutch far faster than normal. Use it gently and smoothly and it should last for a very long time.

    Here in Windhoek, Namibia, we do it the Other Way around. Firstly, you press the Clutch. Secondly, you changed Gear from Neutral to First. Then you release the Clutch to the Breaking Point, up to where you notice the car takes a Dip. Thirdly, you press the Accelerator revving it up between 1-2 up to the point where the car takes a second dip. It is then when you release the Handbrake.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
