    I'm glad you mentioned that in some cars it might be better to stick with the handbrake after all. I could do this easily in my instructor's diesel, but my tiny, nearly 20 year old petrol car stalls almost every time.

  • @UKDrivingTest

    Good of you to make a video explaining this, but not sure if I agree this is the best way to teach a learner, most will stall trying to find the bite while on the footbrake.
    Typically you apply the handbrake if stopped for more than a few seconds, or 'catch it on the bite, with gas' just before you come to a stop and about to roll back.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We still prefer to use the handbrake for hill starts, and recommend it for most situations. We do find this technique useful sometimes though, so thought it might be worth a video.

    • @UKDrivingTest
      @UKDrivingTest 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Advance Driving School yeah it can sometimes be useful, tricky thing is when you are new to driving you find it difficult to decide when it is best to do a certain technique and sometimes this leads to confusion and using handbrake when pausing on a flat bit of road or not using it on a steep hill or when fast pull away required.

    Hello, I hope you have some time to respond. I have a question regardless to clutch wear. Three situations, all uphill starts:
    1. First gear, foot on clutch (disengaged), the other on the brake pedal. You simultaneously lift the clutch at the bite point, release brake pedal and apply gas to move. All at the same time.
    2. First gear, foot on the clutch (disengaged), the other on the brake pedal. This time you slowly lift the clutch till bite point while brake pedal still being pressed. Once you find it, you release brake pedal, then apply gas to move on.
    3. First gear, handbrake on, clutch depressed. You give revs, find the bite point then release handbrake.
    Now which of the three wears clutch the most? Is there a difference in the clutch between 1) and 2)?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Clutch wear is caused by the friction created when the clutch is at the bite point - especially when engine speed is high or the car cannot move. The easiest way to move off is option 3 (as the car is least likely to stall) but it would cause the most clutch wear - especially if there is a delay in releasing the handbrake. Option 1 would in theory cause the least wear as the car is free to roll as the clutch bites - but needs the most skill from the driver. Therefore this video recommends option 2 as the best balance between the two other options. In reality, clutches usually last about 100,000 miles so just drive however you prefer and don't worry about it!

    • @MastroOfficial
      @MastroOfficial 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AdvanceDrivingSchool Thanks for the response! Well the family car has about 120k miles so that is why I am being kind of paranoid lol.
      A last question if possible, is holding the car in uphill with clutch bite point ONLY the SAME as holding the car in uphill with clutch bite point + footbrake?
      Is car 'resting' on the footbrake in that occasion, hence not putting any strain on the clutch, despite being in the bite point? Or as long as clutch is at bite point the wear is the same regardless?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Basically, holding the clutch at its bite point will always create a little wear, so try to minimise how long you hold it - especially if the car is held stationary by any type of brake.

    While your feet is on the CLUTCH & BREAK
    switch to GAS (1.5 rev) -> BITE CLUTCH. for smaller engine cars it’s best to add POWER first then BITE CLUTCH to move off without using hand break. Drive safe!

    Hi, thanks for the great vid!
    Recently passed my test first time with 5 minors!!! I have a question, I have been taught this method by my instructor and am so comfortable with it and it’s the method I always use, did it throughout my test. I only use the handbreak if it’s an extreme uphill. My question is does this wear your clutch? Is it bad for the clutch? I heard it’s only damaging if you hold the biting point too long which I don’t, it’s just a couple of seconds if that... I just don’t want to end up prematurely damaging the clutch in my own car when I have my own, now that I can! Haha. Thanks I look forward to your reply :)

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool

      The car is clever enough to spot that we are about to use the clutch bite, so it automatically increases the engine speed! Most modern cars would do this. Btw you can see the ‘rev drop’ you mention in our other hill start video here: th-cam.com/video/RiS4wbi5AC0/w-d-xo.html

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We might use more power than normal if the hill is extra steep, but be aware if the clutch slips too long like this it can overheat and shorten its life. If you smell a burning smell, that's just what has happened!

    Hi There i subscribed your channel. It's really helpful. I wanted to ask a very important question well its for me, I'm having a test in end of Jan. I pay 24 ph test. But my instructor would charge me £90 on test day. Im afraid that couldn't understand why my instructor is going to charge more as it's too much for me to pay. Pls help anyone.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool

      I guess it depends how long you need to use the instructors car for - as you will need a ‘warm-up’ before the actual test. We always take two hours to do this, complete the test, and take the pupil home.

I don't have my own car even can't arrange anyother so can't do anything just paying. Pls wish me good luck. Thanks.

      The red car in some of our older videos had a foot operated parking brake - however since it was automatic it didn’t cause a problem as our left foot was free to operate it.

  • @ivanrajic5754
    @ivanrajic5754 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi,
    Novice driver here, with a quick question.
    The technique you describe in the video is what I learned with my instructor. In my instructor's diesel Clio, I could reliably hold the car on even very steep slopes (and I do mean steep - I learned to drive in Sheffield) just with the clutch at the biting point. However, I recently rented a petrol Juke and it seemed impossible to do this. Even with the clutch at a point where with any more release, the car would stall, I would still roll backwards every time I'd get my foot off the footbrake.
    So, I just started using the handbrake when having to do any kind of hill start.
    Now, I know that I need to add more gas in petrol cars than in diesel cars when moving off, and particularly when doing hill starts. In the Clio, I would add around 1000rpm for hill starts, while in the Juke I would add around 2000rpm.
    A question that occurred to me only now (but I can't test it out, since I returned the Juke) - could I hold the Juke on a slope with the clutch at the biting point and with extra gas, but less gas than I'd need for a hill start (so, say, 1000rpm)? So, the idea is there's isn't enough gas to move off, but it's enough to hold the car stationary. I'm guessing this would actually just stall the engine, but perhaps not?
    Thanks for the great videos!

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it would be possible to hold the Juke on the hill with enough engine power - but that might overheat the clutch and shorten it’s life. As you have discovered, hill starts can be more difficult in petrol cars - so we would use the handbrake technique most of the time 👍🏼

    • @ivanrajic5754
      @ivanrajic5754 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AdvanceDrivingSchool Thanks!
      I'm thinking I'll probably end up using the "biting point + a little bit of gas" technique in situations where I have to slip the clutch in 1st gear to creep very slowly forward on an uphill, and I then need to stop for just a second (so, basically, in slow-moving uphill traffic). After 3 days with the Juke, having to do a handbrake hill start every 5s in situations like that (not uncommon at peak traffic in Sheffield) became very cumbersome, and it almost feels like wearing out the clutch a little bit more is worth it for a somewhat easier driving experience.
      On that note, my instructor did explain to me the differences between driving a diesel and a petrol car, but I guess we never considered a car where you can't hold it on a slope just with the clutch. Is this a common thing in petrol cars? Or is this more of a Juke thing? Because, several people from the rental company (by chance, I got the Juke on two separate occasions, at two separate branches) have told me that the Juke is the most unforgiving car for clutch control that they've driven (and, due to their job, they've all driven a hundred different cars).

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some cars are much harder than others! Generally larger engines are better (because they have more torque) but also some clutches are more ‘grabby’ than others. Combine a small engine with a poor clutch and you’re in trouble!

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a really common problem. Our advice would be to go and practice your hill start technique somewhere quiet until you have it perfect. Then go back to the roundabout and try to stay calm. When you spot your gap, start to move forward a little early so that you have more time to go without rushing. Good luck!

      That means that you are using too much clutch bite, or fully engaging the clutch too early. If you can’t get this method to work, try using the handbrake method instead: Clutch control on steep hills: th-cam.com/video/RiS4wbi5AC0/w-d-xo.html 👍🏼

      @@AdvanceDrivingSchool what is mean by using too much clutch bite??

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lifting the clutch pedal too high - the clutch plates will grip the flywheel too much, which could stall the engine. We must find just the right amount of clutch bite - not too much or too little!

      Some cars just don’t have enough engine torque to do ‘no handbrake’ hill starts. Keep practicing - but if you (or your car) can’t move off without stalling then you might have you use the handbrake after all. Good luck 👍🏼

    You'd only do this if you were going up hill in slow moving traffic. I wouldn't hold this position if it was stop-start traffic. I'd be wearing out the clutch for no reason other than using the handbrake because it's "inconvenient".
