“i am allowed to rest” yes !!! existing as an autistic in a world designed against us is so hard and we’re all just doing our best. thank you so much for sharing, i related to a lot of what you’ve spoken about. i rlly hope your recovery toolkit is able to help you! you deserve to rest and get better!!! take care Ellie and thank you for a wonderful video.
Thank you so much for the support and validation - we are indeed just doing our best, and that's a real achievement in a world that's set up to be so challenging for us! Hope you're doing well, and you're so welcome for the video ❤️
Thank you for this and please continue to share as able. Sitting here in autistic burnout myself and hearing you reflect on the internalized ableism that many/most of us have to recognize and process though was a really helpful reminder. I realized that even though I haven’t been consciously framing my recovery as getting myself ‘back’ to doing what I did before burnout I TOTALLY am in that mindset. Just get enough ‘rest’ so I’m back to ‘normal’ and can get on with ‘life’… hearing you process all that made me realize I can’t go back and expect anything different to happen. That being said, each burnout has gotten me more data about what a ‘non-autistic-burnout’ existence would actually entail. Oof. Thank you and low/no editing videos are perfect on so many levels, not the least of which is modeling self care.
Thank you so much for the kind words, and I'm so glad this video was helpful to you! Internalised ableism is so tricky to overcome; for me, probably the biggest challenge since my diagnosis. But hey - as you say, we learn more from each burnout! All we can do is keep on keeping on and try to create the best possible way of being for our brains 🥰
clicked on this video because I was procrastinating on my own journalling but this video was a really timely reminder for me as well; I’m not autistic but I also identify as neurodivergent and I have serious executive dysfunction, so it was really nice and validating to hear you talk about how it’s okay to rest and do things at our own pace, and we shouldn’t expect ourselves to function like neurotypical people. I also liked learning more about autistic burnout specifically, very informative. Love this style of video from you, thank you for sharing ❤
ahhh I'm so glad to hear this was a helpful video for you! thanks so much for the kind words ❤️ (also, random, but I love your username, reminds me of the lorde song supercut which is like top 5 songs of all time hehe)
It really should tbh, the fact that I had to google all of this for myself is 🥲 You're so welcome - tbh if I can help even one person by sharing this, it's 1000000% worth it! Hope you're doing well ❤️
Hi! I’ve only watched like 6 min in & just need to leave a comment now because - I really, really like this!! I’ve had a very rough day mentally today & one thing you just said made me giggle (which is kinda rare for me to do spontaneously) & i’m looking forward to watching the rest of the video too! the thing i giggled at when i heard was about the bananas & not wanting to have a rave & i can soooo much relate to that!!!
I just discovered this video and I was so happy about it! I don’t have autism but adhd and I’ve had this type of burnout, too😅 I also get overstimulated by lights and sounds, as well as socialisation. I haven’t experienced burnout because of this for almost a year now, but I remembered my experiences from when I did and what you said resonated a lot with me. I only got diagnosed 10 months ago and I’m still trying to work out how to cope with my adhd symptoms, which has a been quite difficult especially since I’m at uni and the stress of needing to have my stuff put together and my have my brain function according to other people’s standards. But hearing how you’re able to figure out a detailed recovery plan and you understand what triggers your burnout, to me, is really cool! It gives me the encouragement and hope that eventually I will also have a better grasp of my neurodivergent self and that I shouldn’t feel ashamed of myself or the boundaries I set (which others find annoying sometimes)😊 so all the best with your recovery plan and thank you!!
Ahhh I'm so glad this video resonated with you! So much of what you're saying here is so relatable tbh - I only got my diagnosis about a year ago now, and figuring out how to cope/accommodate myself has been a challenge. But it's definitely possible, and even though I'm still not 100% there and still experiencing burnout right now, I'm still coping SO much better than a year ago - so there definitely is hope! I'm really sorry others aren't responding well to boundaries - tbh that's very much a them problem, you're absolutely entitled to make accommodations for yourself and to live in the way that best suits your brain ❤️ Best wishes to you, both generally and with uni - uni is def uniquely challenging for neurodiverse folks, and I hope your uni has some kind of support service that offers help/accommodations!
@@ellesbooks thank you so much for your encouragement and well wishes❤ and with uni, I'm lucky enough to be majoring in departments that are very accepting and accommodating of neurodiverse people! ~Again, all the best with your recovery plan☺️
hey elle, I'm not autistic but I'm very sensitive to sounds, and Loops have been helping me and my girlfriend (who is autistic) to deal with sounds, specially city sounds (traffic, sirens, tube, anything really sharp and loud). I also use them to at home, because sometimes my neighbors can be very noisy, and another type of Loop to sleep, they are very helpful! I guess autistic people experience sound with they're whole body, so having those as a barrier/protection to not sense every little thing around them helps a lot. Please keep going, your videos are amazing ♥
Ahhh that's so good to hear that Loops have been so helpful for you and your girlfriend!! Tbh I've definitely been neglecting mine 😅 which I need to rectify! That's so insightful about experiencing sound with the whole body; I hadn't thought of it like that before, but you're so right!
Very much needed this!! There is no support for autistic adults and I also feel lost with it!! Sometimes I feel like we get diagnosed “yes! You are in fact out to sea, struggling to say afloat! Okay, we’re off now, on our speedboat. Good luck!” And we are all just left alone trying to follow the boat 😂😂
You're not wrong tbh, there really is like zero support for autistic adults!!! It's quite disheartening, and it's why I'm glad there are online spaces like TH-cam where we can share our experiences and support each other!!!
Really love this Video! Also really feeling burnt out at the moment (could be autistic burnout or simply I-did-to-much-uni-work-because-its-the-end-of-the-semester burnout😅)....such a good idea to make a spread like this!💜🫶
Hi, I forgot to comment when I initially watched this video. A friend recommended the book, Self-care For Autistic People by Dr. Megan Neff. Maybe check it out? I’m in the process of getting adhd testing and it has been so frustrating. I’ve been enjoying the book tho & just read about cognitive shuffling as a way to cope with racing thoughts at night. Hope you are well. Looking forward to your next video as always. ❤
Thanks so much for the recommendation! That sounds like exactly what I need. Racing thoughts are such a nightmare for me! And thanks for the kind words - I'm getting there and looking forward to getting back to filming soon 🥰

“I’m just here to buy bananas, I don’t wanna have a rave” 5:59 is the most epic line! ❤😅
Thank you haha.... one of the eternal truths of life, I feel 😅
this is so well-timed for me thank youuuu
I'm so glad, but also so sorry you're going through something similar. Hope things get better for you soon ❤️

Thanks so much for requesting it, I'm really looking forward to filming it 🥰 I'm doing really well, thanks - hope you are too!
I’m in my early thirties and been recently diagnosed with autism and adhd. I never knew I was experiencing autistic burnout.
So many of us end up in the same situation. So glad you finally got your diagnoses, and I hope you're feeling less burned out!
@@ellesbooks I hope you’re feeling less burnt out as well.
