I am not sure why the folks at Finale don't create an easier way to do this type of notation, but thank you for putting this together. Even though I am now on a newer version of Finale, nearly all of this still applies and it is the best explanation of this I've found. I teach arranging periodically and share this link with all my students. Please do more of these!
Very clear explanation, Mark, thanks for this. Only one tip to add if it helps: instead of moving the stems up manually, you can go to Document Options in the Document menu, and predefine that Layer 4 will always have the Stems Up (provided in a regular big band chart, or almost any chart, Layer 4 will not be used for anything else in the score). It would save you having to do it every time you write a cue. Happy arranging everyone!
Was extremely helpful. I have no clue about drum notation, but now I do and something to look forward to learning. Also, this video show just how incredibly awesome Finale software is.
If you go to document options you could cut a few of those steps out. Document options>Layers then freeze stems and ties up, move rests at 7 or 8. and it just does that for layer 4 across the whole piece. but thank you for showing that retranscribe business. that's gonna save a lot of time.
If you want "X"s for note heads, instead of changing the pitches to "G5", change them to "A#2" (the open Hi-Hat). It will still be on the G5 space but now you have X note heads. Great tutorial.
great video , I am importing midi drum files from an external DAW (GM maped) but the drums is displaying and sounds wrong in FINALE, do anyone know how to fix this problem, without having to I ajust every single note?. Transposing do not do the trick. any help appreciated Thanks!
Thank you so much! I couldn't figure it out before with the "HELP" option in Finale. Couple of questions though: will these notes remain blue and yellow on the score? If so, will they print normally (in black)?
Hello Mark, excellent tutorial, but ia have a problem. I have already a pattern wrote it and i want to add a clave cue over the pattern..But layers disappear...I see that your video is 10 years old, i hope that you read me soon, ;)
Ok. That was great. Thank you. Except that I had the words "Fill," written in the second measure of slashes where there were three beats of rest. The word disappeared when I used staff styles selection. I tried again. The word "Fill," disappeared. So I went back to the layer 4 and put a check in for text and repeats. No good. Any ideas anybody??? I was using the technique setting in text. The word would just vanish when i moved it over to the staff style measure.
I know this is an old post but I have a solution to your disappearing expression. Go to Staff tool>Define Staff Styles...choose Slash Notation>Alternative Notation Settings... and make sure "show" expressions is checked for the layer that they are attached to.
Hi Nice to met you, My friend I have a question: for example I´m working in 4/4 and aply slash Notation, in mesure X, Slash notation now is in 4/4 too, but a need only two bars like slash notation y 2/2, you now how to change this thing? This I //// I to this I // I Thank you
Use time signature tool - looks like 4/4. Select the measure(s) you want to display with the 2 slashes, then move the sliders for the number of beats and beat duration until it reads 2/2 or cut time.
Mark Wells Hi, thanks for your anwswer, I need the song in 4/4 but the slash y 2/2, like this: 4/4 I / / I / / I.... Maybe if I change that measure time signature also change :/
Thanks for not taking 10 minutes to explain this! Quick and to the point. Much appreciated!

Yes, they will print in black and white.

2/2 time is the same as 4/4. So it will still be in 4/4 but with the 2 slashes per measure.
Thanks!
They should just have a default style like this already. Boggles me what they don’t.
THANK YOU
