    I bought a brand new Hybrid Toyota and had a crack at Park assist where the car parks itself. First attempt scared the crap out of me when the car tried to park into a driveway across the road rather than parallel park on the curbside. Lucky it was a quiet street . 😂

    Sam I've been using my FSD on and off it works mostly good. One issue is perspective . The highway I drove on twice had the same glitch happen . At a slight curve where an on ramp approaches at the right has a stop sign for the on ramp entering the highway . It sees it as a stop sign for the highway so the vehicle stops , which is dangerous if a car is at my back . Fortunately both times this happened there weren't any cars behind me. Signs need to have some distinguishing mark, color, shape or something so AI doesn't get confused. Scared the shit of me first time it happened.

    • @howardj602
      @howardj602 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      AI has to be able to distinguish the differences between signage and it functions if is to be widely adapated. There has been a recent death caused by an operator who was unable to make the touch screen function properly. She was reported to be under the influence, however the self-drive let her operate the vehicle. A no no

    FSD is fine if it’s optional. Many people derive pleasure from actually driving cars themselves! Robo taxis are great if very cheap and plentiful on demand. FSD would be great if your car sensed you were inebriated and insisted on driving you home. Also good for long journeys, particularly for business people. So yes the Nokia analogy is good as long as FSD adds functionality like an iPhone but not if it removes the option of actually driving yourself - for pleasure!

      I appreciate the sentiment; I used to enjoy driving quite a bit. But your pleasure doesn't outweigh all of our safety. "Self driving" cars are already safer and will make everyone else safer, the more there are on the road..

    I got the precursor to FSD on my 2018 Model 3 and agree there has been remarkable improvement since then (remember 'phantom braking' to overpass shadows). But the current v12.3 still has far to go. For one thing, it craps out in rain or fog when the cameras are occluded. Heck, they still can't get the windshield wipers to function on the auto setting. I'm 84 and hope they get it right by the time I really need it.

    A Tesla FSD system is an option that cost around $5,000 on current discount . How many people want to pay for that option full of disclaimers ?

    • @darpompie4354
      @darpompie4354 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      That is just the beginning. The reason Tesla is pushing this so hard is that they want the subscription money. You then pay the new reduced price of $100/month to use the system. That's $1200 a year for glorified cruise control. I can see the appeal to some but for me I have zero interest. I do not drive enough to warrant that kind of expense. I also don't trust it yet and love to drive. Maybe when 90% of the vehicles out there have it and its proven to be 100% accurate over a span of several years, I would re-look into it, but right now, no way.

      @darpompie4354 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@DynamicUnreal You are right, humans are not 100% accurate. Having in-accurate humans driving around with experimental FSD systems is a recipe for disaster. If I make a mistake driving and die, I am okay with that. Having immature software kill me because of a programming bug is something I am not okay with. I would also not be okay with knowing my self driving car killed someone. The point of 100% accuracy is that I need assurance that there is an improvement. If all we are aiming for is having software drive as crappy as humans do while driving amongst them, then what's the point. I am sure at some point well into the distant future, all cars will be autonomous. To me that is the only way it's going to work because as soon as you introduce one bad human driver into the equation, the odds for something going wrong increases dramatically. I am sure Tesla and mankind will appreciate your death for the sake of a bug fix. While that's happening, I am not interested in paying thousands of dollars of up front costs plus crazy subscription prices to be a ginny pig and a statistic. To each their own.

In other words, the other car company has a lot of work to do just to integrate FSD properly and I doubt it will work as well as it does in a Tesla in another OEM's car for the first 1-3 years after launch. After that, Tesla will get into the rhythm of how to deal with all the suppliers these other car companies use that they instead develop the parts for in-house.

      My point is other manufacturers recycle same tech for last 50 years new and improved, introducing chilled and warmed cup holders and gadgets the average person hardly ever uses for the sake of glorifying their vehicles.
      If self driving isn’t the most ambitious project I don’t know what is.
      To the average person it’s always “Ohhhh duhhh I can drive myself I don’t need that “ but it goes beyond for old people etc.
      In my case it could save me from buying a 3rd car. ;
      I have a work car and family car and recently wife started new business which means she needs a lift to go work and than the car sits there all day , now on weekend I need the family car as well, instead of giving her a ride (which something I can’t do all times), and car travelling back and forth, whilst it can sit home n charge free from sun,, so for example she can drive to work and than set car to return home in which I can use all day etc.
      Endless examples, going to city where no parking, airport .. etc list goes on
      U can easily say just get Uber but the money she earns is low so half of income goes to Uber (it’s so expensive where I live) besides why use Uber when u have ur own car!
      I thought exact same thing when FSD picked up popularity why I need this waste of $, but now I can see bigger picture I will buy it when it does mainstream and legalised

I've racked quite a few miles in the past couple of weeks with version 12 and I'm ready to say that, finally, it really IS getting better. I really does seem possible that it's going to make it to 'safely autonomous' now. It still has glitches that make it unsafe now, but those are getting significantly less frequent and less glaring.
    HOWEVER, robotaxi-level autonomy has a major obstacle: under even moderately poor driving conditions, FSD is degraded and it's hard to see how a system dependent on cameras, the function of which are subject to the elements, can ever put on the road without a driver. Even a moderately heavy rain can significantly degrade its efficacy and that's a physical limitation, not really fixable with software.

When's it gets to 99.9, at that point there is likely to be legislative momentum towards insisting that everybody use it outside of edge cases that would have to be proven in other words where you have to have an issue to disengage it. It will just be cheaper to hail a car that works 23 hours a day without a driver, regardless of insurance. That is 3 full time cab driver shifts, where the labor cost is eliminated.
      Before taxes and social security are taken off, an NYC cab company pays a driver about $110k per year. This means a driverless vehicle can do 3 shifts a day without paying $330k in labour costs every year. Add to that, these things are electric rather than gas, and require less maintenance because of less moving parts.
