  • When the self-proclaimed Republic of Hawai`i, made up of traitors who had engineered a coup d'etat against Queen Lili`uokalani and her government, attempted a treaty of annexation to the United States, loyal Hawaiian Kingdom subjects voiced their opposition. Traveling by foot, horse, train and inter-island steamship, the men and women of the Hui Aloha `Aina gathered the signatures of virtually every adult citizen of the islands in a "monster petition" that was delivered to Congress. The treaty was defeated.
