Hi Patryk, I just love your work. I have been studying up on micro-expressions and facial expressions in general. I want to understand from you two things. 1. When eye brows go down, how can you judge if a person is registering an anger emotion just on his/her eye brows or if the person is just trying to concentrate at the subject in front of him/her. 2.How can you distinguish accurately between sadness and fear when it is registered only on the eyebrows and the mouth doesn't move. Love to hear from you. Thank you!

      1. Look at the context and other non verbal cues or even verbal cues.
      2. With sadness the corners of the mouth go down the eyebrows also curve upwards. Fear the eyes widened a lot and the mouth opens.
This is 6yrs late so you've probably gotten this already.

I watched the video very very carefully but my interpretations of the micro expression is quite different. First, about "anger" I can't see anger in none of them.
The first emotion I detect (for both) is confusion.. as they were seeing a lovely video but it abruptly chanced in something disgusting and they took a (micro) second to understand what happened.
I detect surprise and then fear in him.
I detect 4 micro expressions in her: surprise, disgust and also fear at first but, after a second it comes the fourth one: disagreement. But is more like she's judging the video itself (not the actions seen in the video).
I'd also bet they both saw the same video and they had a similar reaction at the same scene but then, they react slightly different (because they are different persons, of course) and, also, since the man tried to cover the fear since is shameful for a man; the woman instead showed it quite clearly.
If I'd have to guess, I'd say they were seeing a carton that changes in some splatter/violent video.
It could be I'm totally wrong, I have no experience in that but is very difficult to me to agree in particular about the "anger" expression.

2:10 .... Couldn't this be confused- surprised instead of anger-surprised? Because we often mask other emotions with anger when we feel vulnerable or incapable with expressing the real feelings. And confusion would certainly be one of those times. Because I just don't see anger in this, I only see pensive or confused due to the brows and eyes, but no signs of anger in the mouth at all... and then surprise in the eyes and eye brows (likely caused by the realization of what was confusing him). Let me know why this would be incorrect, please! Thanks! Love the videos!
    #2 I got confusion/disbelief, disgust, avoidance/dislike

The woman is Anger - Disgust - Contempt (not fear) . She clearly sees something she does not approve and angers her

What were each of the people seeing? It seemed like a image flashed before them because both peoples their eyes were focused in a single area like a tv or monitor.
Love this stuff Patryk! You guys are upping your game :)

+Matthew Spare Thanks Matthew! We stimulate the persons in different, very effective ways. How we set it up I'm happy to explain when we meet up, because it has many elements to it that are important to make it work.

The first one looks more like confusion. Anger would also involve expanding the nostrils

Focus, it's when you do the "sights" effect with your eyes, your brain centers an object or subject.

Looks great, I'm really looking forward to watching it!
Well, I have I little appreciation about the example video, I might be mistaken but I'd would like to know!
I saw another emotion, On the lady's example, just right after fear! I saw a slight movement of the muscle down the lower lip going upward, that usually means sadness. It was pretty slight so I'm not sure, after that there is a downward movement of the eyelid that could confirm my appreciation! What do you guys think?

    • @PatrykWezowski1
      @PatrykWezowski1  8 ปีที่แล้ว

+neoom I know what you have in mind, but that's not significant enough (certainly after the fear movement of the lips) to draw a conclusion of sadness. Also, the stimulus the women was given didn't involve any sadness element..
