Finally someone who actually goes deeper, Franco Corelli is quite a treat, that high c at the end, is imo the most exciting high c ever recorded.
Easily
Corelli had a voice of steel (in Pavarotti's own words, of course). He was such a master in his art, with such a presence, you couldn't but listen in awe, wondering "How can he sing like that?"
Pavarotti was another kind of tenor, a master of emotions.
Two great masters of the same art. Too bad Corelli didn't have the media like Pavarotti...
Bless you Rory, this so refreshing. To be gripped by the great Franco Corelli in this way is beautiful and took me back to the 50s when my older brother bought a Mario Lanza record and I was transported by a tenor voice for the first time
Thank you!! The great Corelli.....The best ever!!!
I have at least9 cd's of Corelli , they are all worth every pound spent, he was an absolute tenor beyond belief, amazing voice and actor the BEST👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏
....Corelli era un semidio....metà talento umano...metà un semidio sceso in terra per cantare in questa maniera...non è da paragonabile a nessuno!!!
Wonderful! Operas are 'musical plays'. The trend for famous arias (effectively 'speeches' from the plays) to be sung in isolation, with an orchestra, is little different to famous songs from Les Miserable or Phantom of the Opera being released as singles.
You'll probably know Nessun Dorma, famously sung by Pavarotti as the theme to Italia 90, which is a famous aria from Turandot; or the Flower Duet (the British Airways ad song), which comes from the opera Lakme.
In this video, you're watching a scene from Il Trovatore, by Verdi (actually act 3, scene 2 😊). Just to put one thing straight, the guy who came in, as the lovers are about to make marriage vows, is a comrade who reports that the main man's (Manrico's) mother is about to get burned at the stake. The final flurry is him rallying the troops to go and save her.
P. S. And not a microphone in sight, except to record the soundtrack. These singers are remarkable, to hear live in a theatre.
I actually saw Corelli in this opera. It is called “Il Trovatore” by Verdi. He was fantastic, absolutely out of this world.
The guy who came to ask him to come with him is his army captain who told him that his mother had been arrested by his enemy and was going to be burned at the stake so he needed to go quickly to try and save her. He is telling his beloved that he must hurry and go right away to save his mother.
I am glad you recognise what an exceptional singer Corelli is. I have been a great fan of his for many many years.
Loved your reaction! ❤️ You have a really good ear if you like Corelli. 😂 I hope you keep these going and also hope you react to more operatic voices. Best wishes for you!
Wonderful reaction as always Rory! Yes, got it! You did get the gist of the story. The enemy Count Luna is about to burn his mother alive. They are both in love with the same girl. Opera is acting and storytelling through the voice and the music. It can be very exciting. You should watch Turandot, it is a bit strange, but at least it has somewhat of a happy ending.
Good for you, Rory! I enjoy how you are always willing to explore various musical genres. I can't even imagine the years of intense discipline and focus required to achieve the virtuosity we see here in this excerpt from one of Verdi's operas. Just beautiful - Bravo!
If you want to listen to an entire opera, I highly recommend "Madam Butterfly" by Puccini. I was fortunate to see it performed awhile ago. I was amazed at how the singers' voices could fill a huge venue and how they could modulate their voices to convey whatever emotion the composer intended in every part of every scene. I was swept away by the absolutely beautiful music, the fantastic orchestra playing it, and the grandeur of the sets, the costumes, and the lighting - it was a truly emotional experience. If you don't want to listen to an entire opera, then check out Montserrat Caballe singing the aria "Un Bel Di Vedremo" from "Madam Butterfly" on youtube. It's brilliant!
I forgot how good Corelli was. I got real curious so i found some info: from the opera Il Trovatore -- Leonora is preparing for her wedding to Manrico. She is frightened; the battle with di Luna is imminent and Manrico’s forces are outnumbered. He assures her of his love. Manrico will defend it as leader. He swears eternal faith to Leonora till death.

How did his lady pa😂rtners, sopranos and mexzos resist his charm amd didn't fall in love wiith him? His wi😮fe , Loretta , mu🎉st have had to put up with her husband's innumerablle admirerors and kkeep calm
If this had been live IN ITALY, you would have heard the audience screeeeeeeam out loud
Basically, he sings "Ah, si ben mio" to his girl as they are at the altar, about to be married, and he reassures her of his love. Then his lieutenant walks in an tells him that his enemy has captured a gypsy woman and are about to burn her at the stake. His new wife asks what the heck is going on, and Corelli (singing the role of Manrico) tells her that the woman is his mother. The rest is him being angry, vowing to either rescue her or die with her. Listen with a translation, if you like. I think you'll be glad you did.
Manrico is told that they are going to burn his mother at the steak ....so he rallies his troups !
