Begonzi was one of those rare tenor who made the difficult seem effortless. Let those who think that he didn't have a powerful voice remember that there is big difference between singing and yelling. There are plenty of yellers on the operatic stages all over the world. There will never be another Bergonzi! One of my biggest regrets in life is not hearing this giant of opera on stage. Sadly, I came too late to the show...
I heard him many times at the Metropolitan Opera from 1959 until he retired, and his voice was not small! He sang Radames, Ballo, luisa Miller, Forza, Canio, Chenier, to name a few roles. The Old Met had 3,800 seats same as the New Met. He sang there for about 30 years and was adored by the public. He could not have survived there with a small voice. He was a lyrico-spinto.
Thank you for replying and congratulations on your life-long connection to this great singer. Since I am not an opera expert, I have to rely on what I have read about Bergonzi. In an article written on July 11, 2014 by Tom Huizenga, "A Voice Of Velvet And Bronze: Carlo Bergonzi At 90," he writes: "Bergonzi may not have been as loud or intimidating as his Italian rivals (especially Mario del Monaco and Franco Corelli), but he outlasted them all..." One thing is certain, apart from the his admirers, myself included, he is not as well known to the general public as the other "greats." Mention the word "male opera singer" to anyone and what do you hear? "Pavarotti." Well... I have my special name for him: "Pervertotti."
We are fortunate to have these great recordings from tenors of the past, but the best way to judge a voice is hearing it live. Voices come in all sizes and colors. Some are big and some not so big, but to say a bigger voice than Bergonzi's is a yeller may not be accurate. Singing louder was not an option for Bergonzi as it may have been for other tenors like Barioni, Volpi, Filippeschi, Corelli, Del Monaco and Tucker. Bergonzi grew his career by singing well and received many fine reviews that are listed in the Met archives. His high notes were opaque and without squillo. But the Met archives, aside from Filippeschi, also contain many good reviews of the tenors I listed above.
The High note is a B-Natural, a half tone down from a high C but still acceptable. The original score is written with Gs and even tenor's that occasionally sang the high C live, like Corelli, Lauri Volpi and Merli would transpose the " Pira" down a half tone.
