Rick and the other three zero band members constituting Supertramp provided a hard edge to Roger's songs that he would lose after leaving the group. John Helliwell did go back to college in the mid-eighties to truly learn how to play his musical instruments. To dilly dally with Roger, all one needs is a battery powered transistor radio. With those nameless and faceless left over there at Supertramp, it helps getting you a pair of nice speakers!
@@WilliamJones-sf5pt Right Rick's hard hitting songs, after Roger left the only hits they had were dance hits and only one Billboard top 100 song the same amount as Roger. Rick had to hire Mark Hart to sing Roger's songs; and sounds like shit singing them; to keep people coming to see them because that what the people wanted to hear.
Roger still sounds great, just as good as he's ever sounded before. Very regularly I get the earworms of Supertramp music and I'm always humming, whistling and singing to their music !
Such a gentle & humble man. His songs are that rare combination of beautifully crafted & total earworm. They make the hair stand on the back of my neck to this day & are as fresh & relevant now as they were back in the day. Like they always say; Quality Endures!
@@christianthomassen8420 And, to take this a step further, not only is Roger not humble, but he wasn't great. His mother did love him. One can just get so much of prancing around in Candyland, before the desire to get something more salty and meaty arouses the soul. This is why I hate visiting that French side of Canada. They listen to Roger one day and then beat baby seals the next.
Supertramp’s music was five individuals coming together. Bob’s drumming was subtle and still powerful, very tasteful. Dougie’s bass was melodic and groovy, John’s sax was always tuneful and expressive, Dave’s songwriting was suggestive and humorous at the same time, and he was a wonderful pianoplayer. Rog’s songs was yearning, sad and playful. There’s is no genius, there is senius (as Brian Eno so well put it). Enough with all the ”heralded geniuses” of the world. All great human achievements are collaberative. A sum of parts.
Thanks for the love and support . I decided to take out time today out of my busy schedule to get close to my fans and know their thoughts towards my career and I came across you through my official TH-cam CHANNEL insight..
The Logical Song Greater even than "Time" by the Floyd. Why? Because it has humor. It hits that note of the sincere, plaintive ridiculousness of a virgin young man's angst that Pink Floyd were too (self) important and unfocused to find. Which is not to say "Time" isn't a classic - it is. But that just tells you how great The Logical Song is. It is a universal true friend for the same reasons to new generations, forever!

Rick was 100%!! Roger's hangup on his own genius became a distraction that interfered with tge writing and playing of music. Supertramp was never about highlighting an Elton John kind of individual genius!
When does he talk down on the other members? I've listened to this interview twice and never heard him say anything bad. He never does, actually, in any of his interviews, and I've watched a lot.
People without a lot of education will always run off after Roger into the water and drown. I liked Roger when I was a kid. After sixteen years as a truck driver, I went back to college. It was then that I woke up. In my biology class one day I read about the magic in the Mitochondria, was introduced to Symbiosis, and learned about how the sum of the parts were greater than the whole. WOW! It was Rick all along!
So is his humility so it averages out , to have that much success so long ago and still be recognized for it today instantly would be difficult for anyone, not unlike Mark Knophler both living legends.
It amazes me how much people love Supertramp across Canada.
Roger Hodgson is like a Fine Wine, he gets better with age

@@JRoes-yw1rm Rick and his three stooges left the Roger Hodgeson band? Pity.

Most don't realize that Rick Davies was perhaps the greatest drummer to ever live before scooting over to play the piano. So, Bob S. had to be great!
