    Supertramp is arguably one of the best bands ever. I'd put them up there with Pink Floyd, ELO, Steely Dan, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, etc. When I was younger I thought Roger was the better singer and had the better songs; however, I've come to understand now that both Roger and Rick are incredible in their own ways. I just hope that sometime in the future, Roger and Rick can settle their differences and go on a reunion tour.

      I was very happy to see this interview with Rick Davies. I'm a fan of this great artist! I know he suffered from an aggressive cancer and managed to win, thanks to God! But cancer is an illness that has no cure and traces sequels, so in this interview he seems huffy, but it is possible to notice that he is a kind simple person who really makes music out of love, and not out of vainness or attachment to showbiz.

    Supertramp is not just one person. It was the blend of musicianship betweern Hodgson and Davis, but also the other 3 players, especially the fills from John Helliwell, which enriched a lot their sound. Few mainstream rock bands had a saxophonist, as a permanent player. Let’s not forget that Supertramp only started achieving commercial success after the other 3 members joined the band. So, it was not all a Hodgson and Davis thing.
    In my opinion, Hodgson was a master at developing the structure or framework of new songs, like the sequence of chords, the orchestration and arrangements. And of course he had an unmatched high-pitched voice. However, even Hodgson songs have a lot of contributions from Davis, and vice-versa.
    Would “School”, composed by Hodgson, be the same song without the harmonica solo by Davis in the beginning, and additionally the piano solo in the middle? Or without the sax and clarinet solo sections of Helliwell?
    Hodgson’s songs’ skeleton was really good, but the virtuoso contributions of Rick Davis and Helliwell raised it to another level completely and provided the flesh. Hodgson was a great song developer, but he needed his mates to help with the tunes development in terms of technical musicianship’s complexity (piano and sax solos). Hodgson’s piano abilities were far from matching those of Davis’.
    But this same reasoning also is valid for Davis. Let’s take the example of “Goodbye Stranger”, composed by Davis. Would it be the same song without the vocal interchange between him and Hodgson during the chorus? And without that crazy talented extended guitar solo at the end? Of course not. They complemented each other because no matter who composed the tune, he always let the other participate with instrumental relevant lines to the song. So, in the end, it sounded Supertramp.
    They achieved greatness together, and they created magic when joining efforts. On their own, they are still good, but they lack that outstanding spark from the 70’s.
    And even though Hodgson had most of the hits, it does not mean Rick’s songs were lower in quality. They were just less popular in terms of sales, but artistically speaking, they were equally great. Here’s a list of the most famous songs from each of them:
    Roger Hodgson:
    The Logical Song
    Give a Little Bit
    Dreamer
    It’s Raining Again
    Breakfast in America
    Take the Long Way Home
    Hide in Your Shell
    And songs written by Rick Davies:
    Bloody Well Right
    Crime of the Century
    Goodbye Stranger
    Rudy
    Asylum
    Another Man’s Woman
    Ain’t Nobody But Me
    Downstream
    From Now On
    Gone Hollywood
    Lover Boy
    We can not really say one musician is better than the other. All those songs helped made their albums great, and, as Hodgson puts it, Supertramp wrote entire albums, because it “took listeners on a 40-minute journey”. That 40-minute journey would have not been completed without Rick’s tunes, and Hodgson for sure understands this.
    Both were great, and that greatness grew exponentially when they collaborated. Wish they could have understood that, and would have stuck together. They already are an immortal band with just 14 years under their belt. But they could even had reached wider acclaim if they had not disbanded and kept putting out material for the past decades.
    But, we still have the old albums to enjoy their greatness when there was no rivalries. So, let’s keep enjoying them! :-)

      To me, Rick is much better than Roger (as a singer/composer)! I agree with you though, when you about "School", etc!

    • @leandrojardineiro2502
      @leandrojardineiro2502 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@francescostrangis9703 Well, matter of taste and subjectivity of course; though both of them were actually amazing, and complemented each other equally well.
      For example “Child of Vision”, a Hodgson’s song, but with a fantastic trademark piano solo from Rick; or “Hide in Your Shell”, with a lot of piano, hammond organ and moog fills by Rick.
      And now, reversing the roles, “Waiting So Long”, “Lover Boy” and “Rudy”, Davies’ songs which were brought to another dimension by remarkable guitar solos from Hodgson.

    • @francescostrangis9703
      @francescostrangis9703 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    • @MacXpert74
      @MacXpert74 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Grand Caravel Yeah I very much agree with what you said. They were both great and both wrote great songs. But the real strength was in the combination of all of them together. And indeed the saxophone parts from Helliwell are an important factor to why Supertramp sounded as great as they did.
      It's a shame thing went the way they did, and I would love to see them perform together for at least one more time. But It probably won't happen. But luckily there is still the old recordings we can watch and listen to.

    • @Eleutherarch
      @Eleutherarch 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe it was actually Rick who laid down the falsetto parts in the chorus of Goodbye Stranger, although live performances definitely featured exchanges. Either way, your overall points are irrefutable. It is why they are my favourite band of all time and have been so since I was 3-4 years old. Best wishes.

      @@steelyman08 My main problem with Rick - which is also Roger's main problem - is that, when Roger split from Supertramp, Rick agreed to never play Roger's songs in the new Supertramp. Rick didn't keep his promise, which is despicable.

    • @kingofallwhites
      @kingofallwhites 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@MetteC5 There is actually another problem which is a bigger obstacle and that is that Rick wouldn’t go along with Roger’s request that his wife Sue not be the manager. I think that has been the sticking point that kept them from reuniting when they tried to back in the 1990’s. Roger offered to perform with Supertramp during their 40th anniversary but Rick said no. I am guessing that it was because Roger could only do some of the shows as he had shows scheduled that were in conflict and Rick didn’t want some cities to feel ripped off.

    A person with multiple myeloma suffers from various symptoms, such as bone pain and mental confusion (this disease has no cure!). Rick Davies is a 77-year-old man who is slowly recovering from these stronger symptoms. Now, it's only natural for him to feel uncomfortable or a little grumpy in an interview. For a man who has lived in showbiz, he has a right to want some peace and avoid interviews. He is no longer 20 years old. I am struck by the negative comments about Rick's behavior in this interview. It's obvious he's tired of the whole Supertramp thing... for him it's no longer dazzling to be a rock star. He just wants to make some music before he dies.

      ...e questo modo di fare però ( una riservatezza snervante ed inopportuna, visto che si tratta sempre di un gruppo Pop-Rock ) credo abbia reso la Band solo un culto planetario mentre altri artisti/bands molto più giovani di loro ( ed alcuni anche meno bravi ) hanno già ottenuto riconoscimenti prestigiosi come RRHF o una bella stella alla Hollywood Walk of Fame. Meno male che ora c'è Roger Hodgson che con le sue collaborazioni, la sua apertura ai mass-media sta riportando alla ribalta il marchio Supertramp nel mondo, più di quanto abbiano fatto nel loro periodo di massimo splendore.

      Apparently Roger wants nothing to do with Rick anymore. I don't know if the feeling is mutual. Sad as they were a great songwriting team in the same vein as Lennon/McCartney and Jagger/Richards.

    Wonderful to see Rick back playing. One of my all time favourite bands that I have literally grown up with, and finally got the chance to see in 1997 when they played the Point Depot (now 3 Arena) in Dublin. Rick stands for everything that is great about music and, even if he never makes any more music or tours again, he has left us with a terrific legacy of timeless classic rock. Wishing Rick the very best. 🎹 🎶

      Concordo plenamente ! Hoje, ao revisitar os clássicos desta banda icônica, confirmo que as músicas mais bonitas e bem estruturadas são de Rick Davies! Grande compositor, pianista talentoso e, pra mim sempre foi o mais bonito entre os demais. Ainda hoje, com mais de 70 anos, continua charmoso! Que Deus lhe dê muita saúde!

    Again: from this interview you can feel Rick's deep shyness. I'm British, so I can tell you more about it: it's a typical British trait, it's absolutely being shy of showing out your inner feelings, so Brits usually cut it really short and look like they're annoyed or (in a musician's case) act like superstars. No way. Look at when Rick's asked to say 'ciao' to the Italian fans: his head's bent down, as if he wouldn't want to look straight in the camera, and you can perceive he'd like to be anywhere else rather than there... I can assure you it's all about being shy of feelings, it's in the DNA of us Brits. Then we go to our local pub at night, get a wee bit drunk and show it all out, we're friends to anyone around, but the following day we'd forget all about it! ;-)
    Even British people who are more extrovert (Phil Collins?) still tend to hide their true feelings, believe me. Don't believe the mask of a clown.............
    By the way, I'm Scottish (hence British) and half Italian (my dad is from Verona).
    So come on Rangers! (Sorry for this little footie note :-p )

    • @Donnacristi

      Well noted!
      Rick's shyness is visible, even when he was a rock superstar.
      On stage, it was John, the saxophonist, perhaps the least shy of the group, who introduced the songs and thanked the audience.
      Rick just smiled and waved his hand to the audience, as if he wanted to hide... it was his way of saying thank you!

    • @220773
      @220773 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Donnacristi Aye, that's typically British. John was a showman, he was witty, he embodied the humourous side of the Brits. Rick was and is a typical introverted Brit. Roger was more smiley, possibly enough, but he also was firmly British and some might say it was evident he came from an upper-class strict upbringing.
      I'm a Scot, so Dougie remains my favourite member... both humourous and down to earth, never thought he was a star, that's typically Scottish: we tend to distrust (quite cynically) everything that glitters, we do have a romantic side but our dreams never coincide with 'shining stars' or pretentious stuff. We love being... 'normal'!
