I was at the perfect age and time to consume the entire rise of Vice. A lot of people complain about what vice puts out now but Shane and the whole crew put out hours of free entertainment that was like nothing else for years. May his road rise.
Late 2000's Vice parties in Brooklyn (like during CMJ or Internet Week NY) were SO dope. Missed A LOT of return tickets outta NYC after attending one of their parties.
Never thought I'd see these two cross over. VICE changed culture, even towards people that weren't aware of it. Really cool listen, actually just listened to some old episodes of Shane Smith on Rogan, dude is an interesting cat.
Rick: Tell me about the home you grew up in? Shane: That's a weird question ... Rick: really? It seems so straightforward... Shane: Really? Rick: Yeah :\ That was rude of Shane. It was a bit unexpected although I sense that Shane is not in a good place in life for some reason... he seems unsatisfied, jaded, a bit sullen and even a bit anxious. He also did not like the questions about whether he'd ever altered Vice's content to pander to an audience and if he felt like he'd ever sold out - His demeanour and mood seemed to shift slightly at that point . It is most certainly a regular, straightforward question and it's a good one... It tells you so much about somebody and usually, people will have quite a bit to say about their childhoods/growing up.
He definitely seemed detached and lacked self awareness. Also defensive for no reason? Like he was a rich jackass, trying to not sound like a rich ass, while trying to keep the peasants from judging his rich jackass-ness, while not even being happy from the wealth he's gained. it's weird to see.
I don't know, I'm a massive Vice fan but there's far too much dribble going on here. Is Smith ok? I kind of feel sorry for Rubin on this one. This is below par for his podcast unfortunately.
I wonder what Shane was drinking. Interview started off great where his answers were complete and coherent and profanity free. By the end he was slurring his words and couldn't complete a sentence and every sentence had profanity in it. There wasn't an audio problem. Rick was clear as could be. A shame.
Does anyone know where this interview was filmed? I only ask out of curiosity, because it resembles the landscape surrounding my hometown of Florence, Italy. Thanks.
@@DAToro21 I did some additional research on it: the interview was shot at the "Fattoria di Cotorniano," in Casole Val d'Elsa, near Siena, Italy. The site was purchased by Rubin in 2019, where he also plans to create a school for young talent.

@@andreagiachi751 that’s interesting to know, and interesting how many creatives seek out Tuscany. I had just been to Casole Val d’Elsa two years ago. If I was younger I would apply to his school just to be in the area 😀
Gavin's book "how to piss in public" as well as the audiobook done by him is an extremely interesting and hilarious listen for those curious about the early days of Vice and pre-proud boys Gavin.
He lost me when he started with pro Taliban and Pro Putin Propaganda, claiming that there are two sides to every story but failing to mention the fate of women under the Taliban regime and the killings of the many civilians in Ukraine. And his understanding of global politics is superficial, repeating Putin’s false narrative without critically questioning it or without adding context. I really like the podcast format and what Rick Rubin does, but I think Podcasters should either stick to their field or ask their interview partners challenging questions and add some context. Otherwise it easily can become a spreader of propaganda and misinformation.
Well, I’m a fan of Gavin and all these millennials saying that Gavin was the force behind Vice never watched or consumed any content when Gavin was there. Weiss became popular for millennials born in the 90s because uoutube pushed the hell out of them because they supplied cheap and interesting content
Gettin shoutout in the rescue the republic. Keep it up!!! You and jack are fire. Cheers I'm very optimistic we're in the right direction of rescuing sane society.

Nah fuck that guy. He’s just pivoting and bullshitting to try and stay relevant. He destroyed Vice.
the video format is the best
Beautiful location. Every time I turn this channel on I feel soothed.

I'm old enough to remember when VICE was actually cool.
Brilliant, thanks Rick....Love Shane....Love Vice.
As a long time, lover of advice, it was great to finally hear the whole story
Good luck Rick with the new podcast
Anyone else having trouble understanding what he's trying to explain?
My eyes and ears are opened! Thanks Rick and Shane.
Thanks a lot, Rick!
It was such a pleasure to hear you guys

Need to re watch those. Did Vice get the shots of Spetsnaz exiting the 3 star?? 🤪

can Shane Smith not be on drugs for a interview for once!
Right!? Can’t understand a Word

Only thing I’m confused about is, I’ll never understand how anyone can listen to hip hop music!
Everyone wants to see more and know more about Rick Rubin.

Fire the person in charge of audio asap
Whitney Webb on Sabby Sabs
Can’t believe he even said gavins name didn’t think he was allowed to talk about him 😂
Shane seems off…. What’s going on with him? Is it just me or is he not articulating himself well?
Dude is a drunk, this is par for the course
he is slurring his words a bit
This is the founder of VICE? I discovered vice 5 years ago and don't the background story.thank you
Does anyone know where this interview was filmed? I only ask out of curiosity, because it resembles the landscape surrounding my hometown of Florence, Italy. Thanks.
I believe it may be Tuscany Italy. Rick Rubin filmed an interview with Cole Bennet, just recently, on Montreality.

Where was this filmed? It´s gorgeous
It looks very much like Tuscany in Italy to me, but it also could be some place in the US, eg California
Maybe his house in Malibu
they say where during the video

Gavin was the soul and attitude of Vice
He left almost 20 years ago, before any of their biggest stuff happened. And…he’s a racist misogynist! That’s not cool.
It's true
1.5x speed
1.25x seems about right to me
The mumbling on this one is heavy though
i’m so excited about this one!! Go Rick!
Canada __ never underestimate our determination … ahhmazing interview …proud to be Canadian…Nova Scotia representing
The collab we have been waiting for!!!!!! As a lifelong fan of both VICE and Rubin I am so excited 🔥🔥🔥
Wow staying a fan of vice must be hard
Going straight into the conversation is confusing for me. I don't know what the premise or topic is before it starts.
Fightland was basically paid for by Zuffa though wasn't it? I think Jack Slack has admitted this.
Rick didn't get the memo that Shane's not cool anymore. Musically speaking, he used to be the Pixies and decided one day he'd rather be Ted Nugent.
Gavin's book "how to piss in public" as well as the audiobook done by him is an extremely interesting and hilarious listen for those curious about the early days of Vice and pre-proud boys Gavin.
Did Shane have a stroke or did he the do the interview after going to the dentist. He sounds off

❤️
ESG destroyed vice
Is Vice still a thing? Should have interviewed Gavin McInnes, the creative force behind it
You mean the racist founder of the proud boys
@@sundazenwednesdazelmao it’s funny saying this how unbelievably dumb you sound. Much love 😂😂
Gavin has his own content, for average 4chan incels. This interview would last 5 minutes with that guy

Gavin Mcinnes is the goat
Didn't Vice go out of business? 😂
Yeah. Shane sold his end years ago. That’s about when it started going down.
It was special once. I’m guessing you are young?
@@juliandavis8767 I wish I was young 😂
I was wondering, since I saw so many videos talking about Vice and their downfall.
@@juliandavis8767I remember Shane in the last century. Btw Whitney Webb on Sabby Sabs
Funny how some “punks” become so filthy rich. The system’s there I guess and he took it.
