Its a funny thing being a race mechanic, you throw an awful lot of mud at the wall and its often surprising what sticks. This is a trick used by track riders back in the day who used to run dry bearings and remove any rubber seals from their hubs. I first tried it probably about a decade ago and have been setting up my athlete's race day wheels the same way ever since. Every single one of them has given it the thumbs up and through the years fellow team mechanics and riders have also adopted it as a method. Does it make a 'Massive' difference? Well I think that depends on the hub. Certainly, one year our team was using a hub supplied by a sponsor that used six cartridge bearings in the rear hub. We found that stripping out all the grease and seals from the hub certainly made a 'significant' difference. TBH, I'm not used to being on camera and it was all I could do not to say 'OK', 'So', 'Um', 'Errr' etc so maybe I should have said 'can' make a massive difference. However, I will back myself and say that you'd be surprised how much drag greased and sealed bearings and hubs can add. As for how many Watts it saves, well that would be dependent on the individual hub. The chain lube used is Juice Lubes Viking Juice which is my personal favorite chain lube but no good for cables. Anyway, felt it was worth sharing, hope that helps.

Thanks Chaz! For the record, we think you did an amazing job presenting and explaining the procedure on camera!

Thank you Chaz! I also adopted this from Skateboarding back then and racing Slalom. Lube definitely gives and rolls with the ball bearings as compared to grease. Longevity is on the end of the spectrum. This has been helpful.

They might spin a lot better on your finger but when you test a bearing it needs to be under load.

  • @grigorbrowning

I'd be really interested to see this tested somewhere like a velodrome - looking at wattage comparison at a given speed. Friction measured spinning the bearing unloaded is NOT the same as when it's actually on the bike carrying ~40kg of load per axle.
A brilliant and simple mod if it actually saves a few watts... ...but I have my doubts that it'll do any better than good grease once it's actually on the bike. I'd loved to be proved wrong - can't beat free watts.

Yeah, they won't test this because the difference wouldn't be measurable lol

    • @Charles-wz9sd
      @Charles-wz9sd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

They did test this and they found it to be very minimal. Less than 1 watt of saving.

JDW people actually do this. There is a saving but it's still a fraction of a watt.

If you believe in this placebo strong enough, it may very well make a difference. A bit like putting a lucky penny in your back pocket. (in fact - the extra weight of the penny might take out the benefit of the supercharged bearing...)

Please don't do this. Most pro mechanics don't even do this, and when they do, they use petroleum based lubes, not dry film lubes like this video shows.

I have been doing this for many years and i have taken many K.o.m on strava by this method the wheels roll really fast however dont get these wheels wet if you do it is game over if you ever get caught out by the rain stop and get off your bike and get the train home or risk causing serious damage to the bearings and hub my tt route is a flat 38 mile road and has a train station every 6 miles along it.

I use lithium grease mixed with chainlube for greasing my powertool bearing and gearbox.
Low viscosity make bearing spin faster. for no load bearing like shaft bearing that will be ok.
If you do for wheel bearing, bearing will failure.

Can be dangerous for heat dissipate. Can have more friction when heated, specially going down the hill. Maybe new bearings with special light grease for race might be better chose.

Just use ceramic bearings and GOOD set of race wheels and you are GOLDEN.

  • @a.garcia9815

I used to do this when I raced BMX. The motos are short that you never burn a bearing, but you have to relube before mains, then overhaul again before the next day of racing. I wouldn’t recommend this on an xc bike or road bike myself. Of course with high quality fully ceramic bearings, you can get away with just running a good synthetic oil instead of grease.

The precision in which the hub is manufactured, the quality of the bearings, choices of seals etc is far more important than any unproven lubrication hacks like this. The qualification may be *race-day only, but honestly this is really bad advice. A loaded wheel bearing is not a fidget spinner.
