  • Although there are more joys to cycling than simply speed, we’ve surely all felt the urge to go faster.
    Consistent training might be the most effective path to upping the pace of your rides but there is a certain delight in the mechanical challenge (and the instant results) of optimising your bike for maximum speed. We can’t deny, we’ve all been tempted by a bling upgrade in our time!
    So, without further ado, here are our nine tips for making your bike faster.

    • @teoheugene
      @teoheugene 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The highest drag position was the classic upright riding position with your hands on the hoods, which required 430 watts to overcome air resistance. Lowering into the drops with straight arms saved a bit of energy, requiring 417 watts. Going even lower in the drops by bending the elbows and hunkering down saved more energy still, requiring 385 watts. But the most aerodynamically efficient posture was actually hands on hoods, arms bent with forearms parallel to the ground. In that position, the rider needed to produce 372 watts, a 13.4 percent reduction from the first hands-on-hoods posture.
      For a rider churning out 300 watts on a 40K (25 mile) time trial course, that simple adjustment of posture (bending the elbows and lowering the torso) could shave off nearly three minutes from start to finish.

    One of the easiest upgrades is to look up your ideal psi tire based on weight. The back wheel should be a higher mm or higher higher psi. The front tire should be softer.
    This is because the vibrations mixed with a super rigid frame causes you to use more watts to do the same bike speed output.

    Maxxis ultralight tube is good and light enough. R9150 caliper goes sharply ahead of its competitors. Swisstop brakepads are sweet, but wear out fast, try campy's. If you budget for ceramic headset bearings, go FSA ACB SL. Conti 5000 is good, but specialized turbo cotton is fantastic (pricey). When speaking of wheelsets, Vortex from China is the killer of its price range, if you could get a pair. And the last, most important IMO, get a proper cycling suit, for the comfort and aerodynamics.

    Narrow bars are not only ugly, they're also unhealthy. Holding a narrow bar makes you squeeze your arms tighter together next to your chest (as opposed to in front of it like on a aero clip-on bar) meaning restrict your lungs to a smaller space to move in. That's why wider bars might even make you faster despite being marginally less aero because they let your breath more easily thus making you more powerful.

    I’m enjoying the bike so far th-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.

    Latex inner tubes are weak, you'll lose speed from having to stop to change out flats. If you're worried about friction in butyl tubes, do what I do and rub baby powder on them. Talcum decreases friction between tire and inner tube.

    latex tubes are porous. They don't hold air very well. You're talking about marginal gains, not upgrades. We have looked at marginal gains for decades. Not all new tech is a good marginal gain. You left a lot out about centrical forces and fewer spokes make a weaker wheel. If you are looking for a lighter bike and to go faster then I would suggest fuel sauces first.

      That's not actually correct they are 5-5 w faster .It is only a suggestion that they are up to 5.5 faster with certain tires not all .It depends on tire compounds .I have used latex tube and they do offer a better rolling resistance with some tires. Continental 250gm sprinter use latex tubes in there tubulars and they are very fast . They are 11 barr..Bicycling Australia in the 90s wrote a piece on the heat of a wheel and the research on what a tire and tube do when ridden .The tube twists around quiet a bit when ridden. There conclusion was that the actual heart of the wheel is the tube Cheap tubes cheap ride .We know now that the biggest issue is friction and ground coverage when ridden .We knew this in the 70s none of this is new .The selection of tires didn't exist then ..It is still marginal .

    You need a good light frame and two set of wheels. One solid, heavy alloy cheap for (alot of) training and the other one super fast tubular Carbon for race. If you at pro level fitness/speed and ceramic bearings maybe will make a differnce you get them from your sponsor...
