What an impressive and complex flying machine. A meticulous build job. Didn't know about the Ham band option for the radios. I've been a licensed amateur since 1959. N7ISU Enjoy your videos, now I want to get into Quads and FPV
Thanks for the comment Jan. The GPS is not wired into the KK 2.0 board. It goes to the Skylark Tiny OSD III that provides battery info like current draw, current consumed, and voltage. It also provides GPS data like speed and approximate altitude. This all is overlayed over the FPV image via a custom wiring harness. The KK2.0 board is totally separate from that system. Cheers.
THanks, yes I know Jang at an acquaintance level. We have chatted a lot if I catch him at N.C.H. and I helped him with another friend redigup one of the tracks once a while ago. He is super nice in person. :) Thanks for the offer on the frame. All I need to get it back in the air is 4 motors and props. On the fence about selling it. Would be nice to have another quad for LOS flying.
I did try a hard mount to the frame. I tried a lot of things. The earplugs trick yielded the best results. I think part of my problem is mt cheapy motors. I eventually want to move to 4S power and lower Kv motors for better efficiency. But I want to make sure I have a setup that still works with my Graupner 10x5 props. Love the bigger props on slightly lower Kv motors. Cheers, your HoverBot looks crazy! Happy flying.
Thanks for the comment. I loved this frame, but I finally gave up on flying it FPV or using it for aerial video and changed to a 2 part design frame. I may keep my "Reptile" though for Line of Site flying. Haven't decided yet. I will be curious on your luck with this wire frame thing you are talking about.
I have the same exact quad frame you have, I swapped out the soft arms for the stiffer and much higher quality HK Q450 arms and they fit perfectly. I have also tried all sorts of methods to reduce the rolling shutter jello effect on my GoPro 3 Black edition but still no success. There is one more method of removing the jello effect, that is to use the wire isolator mount. I plan to build one and test it on my Reptile. My Matt Hall Tcopter frame though with High KV motors shoots jello free videos
Greeting "Bob N7ISU" :) I hope to have my ameture license by the end of the month or next month. Thanks for the kudos on the rotor-craft. Quads are weird animals, but I love flying them. I started with a basic X quad, ade of cheap parts from China, and learned a lot from that. Then built this one as an FPV platform, and learned a lot more, and now want to move up again and rebuilding it again in the next week or two. Cheers!
Hey Mike. the GPS is only for my OSD, and is not connected to the KK2.0. AFAIK it doesn't support GPS in any way. I have the Fat Shark Predator head mounted display. This quad without the Hero 3 was about $300 including 1 of my 3 batteries. Hope this help. Cheers.
Well interestingly I got to fly my mates H-Quad on a day with major wind gusts but it wasn't too bad too fly. I've flown Helicopter years ago so the transition to Quads hasn't been a major drama. Mind you Thomas is a total natural at flying Quads and he's way better than me! once I get this FPV wing project out of the way I'll start hitting the quads and see where that goes . . man this hobby is getting expensive
The 939 is actually an amazing little quad, but there is nothing like flying the big boys. If you have any Heli experience it makes flying them ultra easy. If you are really good with planes, it will be fairly easy too.
Smaller props higher kv.. sometimes to much dampning causes the jello effect.... also foam earplugs are designed not to fully cancel out harmonic vibrations hence you can still hear with them on :)
SO how did the iconic x fair ? For the record, a stiffer frame is no guarantee for less jelo. Perhaps the contrary is even true, wooden frames seem to get good results and are anything but stiff. If you havent solved it yet, try pre-compressing your foam mounts somehow and if possible, make the camera 'heavier' so it has more inertia. I will try to put the battery and camera on the same tray, isolated from the frame and vibrations.
Well I guess my frame being late and seeing this I'll just do a quick review when it gets here. I run 2218's which will flex those arms. Maybe i'll use my smaller motors. Nice build, I have DJI arms on way for it too.
Hi, I think the jiggle is not vibration but is the flight controller. KK board might have some problems with spider style quads if you watch Hobbyking's KK2 SK450 Deadcat programming guide, before they tuned it, when the quad decent, it will wobble.
Hey man no problem. I much prefer the Iconic X. Its about 3x the price of the reptile, but well worth the price. Since your not in the USA I would suggest ordering the frame with some extra arms in case you need to do a repair.
You Probably have the best profile to make this kind of videos... so please continue. Can you please tell me witch camera do you have installed? and in which store did you bought the props. Thanks
APC 1047 generics are what I use if you get a chance maybe try a set. Maybe my motors will be smoother but I will try and get it right. The Hoverbot is my learner quad like a first beater car idea. LOL! Reliable though, Thanks for the preview!
In your Reptile FPV video I see the prop is in view. Was this a camera adjustment or actually what you see in the video. I just bought the Reptile v2 and didn't see any other videos using the gopro. Maybe that is why the gopro is mounted on the other side.
Love it!!! Thank you so much for the video. I am currently setting up a hj alien x quad which is very similar to the reptile. By far the best walk through of a spider quad that I have seen. I am going to use the hk pilot and ublox 7m gps. I will make a build video for it
Thanks for the vid...well done! If you've not solved your Jello vid problem or its vibrating at all let me know. I like low budget homebrewed ideas and my very first idea ended up being the perfect vibration proof camera mount that works better than most I've seen online. My brother spent a zilloin bucks on a 3 axis brushless system and my $5 static mount is WAY better! Take care Jeremiah
No problem, for some strange reason, I can't seem to post a video response to your vid. Anyway, here's another video I shot over the weekend. It was shot using a 1st Gen GoPro HD hero and at 30fps so there's some jello but overall most of the footage is usable. watch?feature=player_embedded&v=qWTktiFnAr4
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. Wow that thing looks nits. But it also seems to work REALLY well. Can you please submit a video response of that video to this video or any of my other wobbly (Jelly Vision) Reptile videos? Thanks and great flying.
Hey all this quad is long gone, and I never weighed it. I have learned SOOOO MUCH about building quads since I made this video. If I could guess I think it was around 1.3 - 1.6Kg's.
your build is awsome im just getting in to quad build and i would love to rip off your build is there any way that i could get you speck and part list and a ball park of waht u spen on the hole thing? pleasee
I'm trying to get a quad project going and had a couple questions. How did you get the GPS module to work with the KK2 board, what does your wireless camera transmit to, and how much is your total investment in your quad without the gopro camera???
I have the TBS frame and it does the same thing! with a Naza the frames are not good for a GoPro 2 they work OK with the Gopro 3 black but I will buying a better frame as well.
so do you not recommend the Reptile at all or is there any other reason because after watching your maiden flight that you made of it at the rc car track I was seriously considering it...and price for the frame is cheap and has the extended landing skids... What would you recommend frame wise and you say you aren't using kk2 anymore?? Thanks w0odi
Without a good quality brushless gimbal you will always have some shake in the video. Also in the end of the video where you're flying it looks like the quad itself may be shaking a bit. Being that you balanced everything it may be an issue with your flight controller and less likely the frame.
Hey Helidragon, I just bought the reptile 500 v2 with a Hobby King multirotor v3 board. and I was wondering if i could use normal X-copter firmware or need special firmware. thank you
I see you are using GPS module with KK 2.0 board. Can you share with me how you accomplished this? I know the quad is long gone, but adding a GPS would be great with this Flight controller. Thanks.
is the screw that comes with the sunnysky motor is long enough to secure them on the arms of the quad? I have the same reptile frame just waiting for my motors. base on the picture if the sunnysky motor the screw looks short can you confirm that. thank you
For some reason flagged your comment as SPAM I have no idea why. I just told it "Not Spam". This is the V2 and it came with weird big huge landing skids. I decided not to use them. The plates are for sure not as thick as the Disco so this may be the reason. I eventually gave up and moved to the Iconic X FPV from quadcopters (dot) us
Have you tried moongel ($6 on Ebay) between your GoPro and FPV camera? I use it with my SJ4000 and 2 axis gimbal, HJ Alien X-mode 500 and it works really great. Just a thought.
Nice clean electronic setup our drones are the best hobby but soon we will have problems because some guys don't respect the air space here at NY two guys get on trouble because they fly close to a NY PD helicopter .
I have the very same quad but I am using dys 750 kv motors with 10.4.7 carbon mix props, & I have my gopro setting on a piece of Velcro & I don't have hardly any jello ! you can check out the video here on the you tube just do a search for reptile 500 flight 21 ! happy flights !!
with this setup, how was the jello effect, as I also have the same frame as this, and I am getting a lot of shaking even after balance the props and motors. I don't mind a little :-)
I think he mentioned ebay because it looked like team blacksheep's discovery frame, but you can get it from hobbyking - just search for 'hobbyking reptile500'.
This video is 7 years old. If you are able to use something more modern than the KK2 I would suggest that. If not, or this is all you can get there are some great videos on how to tune the KK2 right here on TH-cam. Just search for "KK2 Tuning" and you should find some good info. If memory serves, the tuning guide will ideally match up with the firmware you are running on that board. Good luck! It was an awesome board for it's day.
I believe the GPS is for his OSD and not for connecting to the KK2. Notice when he showed the screen shot of his OSD (5:20) you saw the number of satellites, and the copters current grid coordinate.
I have just built my wire rope anti vibration mount based on Yusuf Pirgali's design (Google "goPro anti-vibration Mount yusuf pirgali" and click on first link) I used clear plastic furniture feet coasters and a bicycle brake cable for my wire rope. But generally my vibration mount is very similar in concept to all wire mounts out there. I'll post results when I get to fly this weekend. Google "Tcopter Marina Weeliano" for my Tcopter vids.
Use ardupilot it will reduce jiggle and if you do a lot of dampening than you will get jello dont use that plastic enclosure use Velcro with double sided tape
Got my DIY Wire Rope mount video up! The results are very impressive. By far the Wire rope GoPro mount is the best way to eliminate Jello bar none! You can view the video here /watch?v=kcWcE7zFfLc
It's the arms that cause vibration on these frames. You can balance props and motors until cows come home. These arms flex almost 18mm at 50% of throttle. It was a bad engineering on the part of DJI to even come up with arm design like this.
Yeah I eventually moved all the hardware off this frame and built something else. Now I have 2 main quads. A Iconic X FPV from "buildaquad dot com" and a QAV-540G from "GetFPV dot com". The 540 is nice but suuuuper expensive, and the Iconic-X FPV has been a solid 2 part frame that I have countless flights on. I suppose I should do build tours of those. :)
Anatoly Vizitiu Arms don't cause vibrations.... common sense should tell you that an inanimate plastic object isn't just going to magically vibrate on its own. Your motors and props weren't properly balanced, hence sending vibrations into the arms. The fact the arms flex and aren't rock solid actually helps dampen that a bit. If the arms were rock solid, even more vibration would have been transferred to your frame.
***** Not true! I beg to disagree with you on this. I have built over 20 multirotors for sale and I can confidently tell you that the most unbearable vibrations come from this reptile from HK. I built it once for a client and when I went out to test it before shipping it off I experienced the worst vibration in my flying years. The vibration is so bad that even the gimbal can't handle it and starts to shake erratically. At 50% throttle it is quite visible to the eyes. I moved all the electronics to an F450 frame and the vibration reduced to a bearable level. My advice to anyone building a budget quad is to save more and buy a better frame. There are lots of good quality frames just under $100 that would give you trouble free flying experience.
Bennie Chiedu I think the fact that you were able to fix the issue by using an F450 frame, which uses the same arms, pretty much PROVES my point that arms don't cause vibrations. Not sure what we disagree about......
***** they don't cause vibrations they transfer it from motor and props to your camera and electronics. Wood absorbs some of vibration while cheap plastic amplifies the vibrations.
hmmm 30$ for a clone or about $140 for the TBS frame... I would still go with the TBS frame for the power management and features it provides... But nice for the price.
I have the same Sunny Sky motors, TH-cam Search: Z8Tr5CI2ydo I fly the the even cheaper Locust model ($30) quad and found the 9x4.5 carbon fiber props off ebay (after sanding them into balance) absolutely remove all wobble/jello effects! Gopro mounted on Flytron bracket using stock rubber grommets that came with the Locust.
What an impressive and complex flying machine. A meticulous build job. Didn't know about the Ham band option for the radios. I've been a licensed amateur since 1959. N7ISU Enjoy your videos, now I want to get into Quads and FPV

Go with 8*5 and hard mount your gopro in it's case on the same shelf.
You might want to move your Vtx in board to prevent damage

I think they even do a tutorial with the KK tuning for the atypical geometry of this frame.
Sweet build! I have to start doing my shopping soon too!
Hey man no problem. I much prefer the Iconic X. Its about 3x the price of the reptile, but well worth the price. Since your not in the USA I would suggest ordering the frame with some extra arms in case you need to do a repair.
you have to flip the top and bottom plates to switch the camera mounts on both sides.
You Probably have the best profile to make this kind of videos... so please continue. Can you please tell me witch camera do you have installed? and in which store did you bought the props. Thanks
Moongel is worth trying for vibration removal.. Its for drummers to stick on drums to remove resonant frequencies :)
Except for the camera mounts, Beautiful build!
PS I have only rigidly mounted my GoPro with thin 3m tape maybe try tight clampng or heavy rubber bands?
APC 1047 generics are what I use if you get a chance maybe try a set. Maybe my motors will be smoother but I will try and get it right.

Hi, nice vid. Do you know if the dji arms would fit that frame?
Oh no! they included sticker? That is really nice sticker :) Great video, I am building similar system, thanks for all the information.
And that "Jiggle" in the GoPro might actually be coming from the ear plugs. Try flying with the GoPro hard mounted to the frame. :)
No problem, for some strange reason, I can't seem to post a video response to your vid. Anyway, here's another video I shot over the weekend. Nice..that you have very detailed explained

Fantastic! But you should upgrade to Ardupilot.
NorCal hobbies. Do you know Jang? Also if that frame is siting around collecting dust, I'll buy it from you.
Thank you for the reply HeliDragon. so which frame do you recommend for FPV? reptile or X?
Is there a partslist of this quad ??
Is the gps rx connected to the kk2.0?
Hey Helidragon, I just bought the reptile 500 v2 with a Hobby King multirotor v3 board. and I was wondering if i could use normal X-copter firmware or need special firmware. thank you
You should use your GoPro as the FPV camera :)
I see you are using GPS module with KK 2.0 board. Can you share with me how you accomplished this? I know the quad is long gone, but adding a GPS would be great with this Flight controller. Thanks.
Sir i would like to ask how did you connect the GPS on your KK2 board? do you have a link were can i check? thank you
is the screw that comes with the sunnysky motor is long enough to secure them on the arms of the quad? I have the same reptile frame just waiting for my motors. base on the picture if the sunnysky motor the screw looks short can you confirm that. thank you

do you think the arms for hobbyking sk450 quad fits the reptile?
I had some vibration in the gopro after changing record settings to qvga 50fps it was perfect
Are the arm holes same as the DJI f450 ?
Have you tried moongel ($6 on Ebay) between your GoPro and FPV camera? I use it with my SJ4000 and 2 axis gimbal, HJ Alien X-mode 500 and it works really great. Just a thought.

I will be adding my build soon !
Your motor layout is it on quadcopter x mode?
What is yours motors and props ?
whats the name from the GPS, who you buy it ?
Yeah a little bit of the prop ends up in the picture on the Reptile.
That sounds nuts! I can't wait to see it. :D
Nice vid. Thanks for the info. I'll lower my expectations before the kit arrives ;)
hey, how much your quad weight with battery plugged in?
What the total weight ?
what motors?
What is advantage of this Body ? maneuverability??
There is more room for all the FPV gear, the maneuverability depends on the prop/motor combo and tuning the FC.
with this setup, how was the jello effect, as I also have the same frame as this, and I am getting a lot of shaking even after balance the props and motors. I don't mind a little :-)
Using the KK2 board...what is your P & I gain setting? Also what is the part name and number of the GPS Module?
does the 12 inch props fits with this frame? The arms can be replace by the carbon or aluminim tubes then 3D printed locks
man tell me what numbers u put on PI editor, Self lvl and mixer editor on the kkboard
where did you buy the frame?
I think he mentioned ebay because it looked like team blacksheep's discovery frame, but you can get it from hobbyking - just search for 'hobbyking reptile500'.
In ebay I bought this same frame for 30$
oh nice
Was it the NEEWER Frame Kit?
I used kk2 too but it works not good, do you how?
This video is 7 years old. If you are able to use something more modern than the KK2 I would suggest that. If not, or this is all you can get there are some great videos on how to tune the KK2 right here on TH-cam. Just search for "KK2 Tuning" and you should find some good info. may explain how you connect your KK2 board to GPS module? a picture or a link? thanks
I believe the GPS is for his OSD and not for connecting to the KK2. Notice when he showed the screen shot of his OSD (5:20) you saw the number of satellites, and the copters current grid coordinate.
I'm still playing with a v939 lol
I have just built my wire rope anti vibration mount based on Yusuf Pirgali's design (Google "goPro anti-vibration Mount yusuf pirgali" and click on first link) I used clear plastic furniture feet coasters and a bicycle brake cable for my wire rope. Hi! What is the maximum prop size which will fit this frame?
