Rachel’s Maria has the hope and the joy. Natalie’s Maria is telling her story to her friends and is enjoying the moment. Both brilliant performances. Props to Rachel and this being her film debut
Rachel's Maria is a Columbian-American cleaning lady (because...why?) and not Puerto Rican. Natalie's Maria is a Russian-American in "Brown Face," not Puerto Rican, lip-sycing, and works in a Bridal Shoppe. Both films are very flawed and perpetuate the negative view of their current entertainment climates. Hoping to see accurate representation in my lifetime. Culture/colours are not interchangeable. 😪
Indeed, and I wish they could be each appreciated as such rather than being weighed down by comparisons. I’ve reviewed theatre, I’ve seen a multitude of adaptations… why should ‘21 be treated any differently?
35000 candidate for Maria´s role, but only one perfect: Rachel Zegler. The right looks, and a great singer already. She was something like twice better than the 2nd place girl in the castings.
Mari Nixon dubbed the singing voice of several of Hollywood's most acclaimed actresses. She had a contract which strictly enforced her non-disclosure, apart from her paycheck. Of course, her role was a non-secret within the Hollywood community. I've wondered what the stars for whom she dubbed singing felt like, with all of their fellow stars knowing that they were being publicized and awarded for singing roles in musicals, when they couldn't carry a tune in a bucket.
The original had a funny little tap dance by Maria behind a screen - you could only see her feet - and I wish they'd found a way to keep that in the new one.
I remember that. I did like how they did that beach display at Gimbels in the new one to represent how "pretty and witty and bright" Maria's world is at that moment when there is a very dark world outside the store.
How do you think you'd do the mash-up for 'The Jet Song', 'Cool' and 'Gee Officer Krupke' if you ever did them? Love watching both Rachel and Natalie (even though she was dubbed she still gave a great performance) in this video!!!
My original LP of this wonderful musical has stood the test of time. Guess what, the more it scratchier it becomes, the better it sounds . The originals are always the very best. Peggy Wood (Aotearoa)
Hey! West Side Story is my absolute favorite musical EVER! Any chance you could do a "Dance at the gym", "A Boy Like That", or the "Taunting Scene (Anita and Jets) SUPERCUT?
They're both stunning. My only criticism with the new West Side Story is that 'I Feel Pretty' should have come BEFORE the deaths of Riff and Bernardo, it was jarring to go from such a serious scene into IFP. If I recall correctly, in the 1961 version, IFP is more in the middle and before the death.
You can actually hear Natalie’s voice singing this song on TH-cam, recorded before she was dubbed. In this song she is not bad but she did not have the vocal strength for some of the other songs. Notwithstanding that she was wonderful in the part and she was luminous on the screen😊
Yes, Rachel is the prettier one. And about the Anatomy parameter, Natalie was more mature, was already a blossom woman, so she had better body. But Rachel was just 18 years old at that moment, she still has a lot of time to blossom.

Both versions of "West Side Story" are masterpieces.

Obsessed with Tonight's Quintet, and now this! Catchy tunes just linger well in my head as if they are carved.
So true. The songs in this musical and two films are so catchy.
Leonard Bernstein was a true American genius. I would wager most Americans have no idea who he was nowadays.
Cred where credit is due: It's not Natalie Wood who is singing. It's Marnie Nixon.
I know. I credited her in the description.
It would have been better to put her name in parentheses next to Natalie Wood. That would have been more transparent.
oh, gee! thanks! No one ever knew that before you came along (eyeroll)
The ending with all of them harmonizing 😮❤ you’re a genius!
Marni Nixon’s voice is so pure and beautiful ; the best thing about the original movie.
Not Rita Moreno's powerful performance or the insane choreography?
ウエストサイドストーリー大好きだから嬉しい
The creator of this video is lucky all the musical numbers we’re in the same key. Very well done. Thanks for this video.

YES! I've always wanted something like this for this song ever since you made that Tonight Quintet video. Thank you so much.
You're welcome. I enjoyed editing these and am so happy you've enjoyed them.
Bet Natalie Wood would've loved Rachel Zegler's performance.
Thanks Marni Nixon.
I LOVE these supercuts!! thank u!! the side by side, you can really see the higher pic quality on the original vs the new one.
Bravo!!!!! El montaje está impecable armonizando las dos versiones de forma magistral!!! Esta película es una obra de arte ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Perfect cuts!
Thanks Cary! Had a fun time making this.

SIGUE SIENDO UN MUSICAL GENIAL
Always love these! You do such great work.

Been thinking about doing "Dance at the Gym." Will see what I can do.
@@MaxHechtman AND a Boy Like That. I sing that all the time and i saw WSS a LONG>>>LONG>>>>>LONG time ago
genius then and now and always!
First! love these vids
Las voces de maría Tony y de rita moreno en la original fueron cantadas por otros ellos solo hicieron mímica. La de Steven todos cantan!!!
no more comments in year? Aye, Carumba!
👏👏👏
Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you life in the United States 🇺🇸 between years 2021-2024. 🎀
Great editing, and fantastic mixing with the videos from both WEST SIDE STORY movies. ❤love it. Thanks. Excellent job !
The original doesn’t need a remake!
Huh?
its not a remake its an adaptation of the original screenplay
Can we have Jet Song too?

If I recall correctly, in the 1961 version, IFP is more in the middle and before the death.
Now we need to have Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson version over here.
She is beautiful get over it they did her wrong with the short hair
Natalie is beautiful but did not sing in the original movie, shame.

The Late Natalie Wood could not sing. Her voice was dubbed.
👌 'promo sm'
Some of these people were dead by the time Footloose came out originally
Natalie is the best
You mean Natalie and Marni Nixon are the best ; let’s give credit where it’s due.
I believe Nathalie is more charming and sweet cannot be compared
The original is funnier and more relatable.
Both are great talented women. Yet my preference as to who is pretty would be Maria from the original WSS. I prefer her voice, too.
Carol Lawrence was great
Sadly people said NO to this version. They supported crappy super hero crap
We also had an ongoing pandemic. Not everyone was comfortable enough to go into a movie theater at the time (mostly older audiences).
Natalie wore makeup to make her look Hispanic and someone else was singing. Thankfully we do not do this this way anymore.
...no, now we cast someone of columbian decent because coulurs and cultures are interchangeable. Did they learn nothing from Crazy Rich Asians?
@@officialmichaelcarrascoWould you have preferred a white actor playing an Hispanic character & have their skin painted brown?
@@joewhitehead3 Who would ever prefer that? 😬
@@officialmichaelcarrasco Exactly
@@joewhitehead3 ...you DO know cultures are not interchangeable, right?🙄
I FEEL Rachel is more PRETTY than Natalie.
I disagree - Natalie was beautiful!
Yes, Rachel is the prettier one. And about the Anatomy parameter, Natalie was more mature, was already a blossom woman, so she had better body. But Rachel was just 18 years old at that moment, she still has a lot of time to blossom.
Not even close.
considering Natalie didn't sing this...but rather lip-synced to it. They used someone else's voice, just as they did for her in Gypsy.
I believe Natalie did her own vocals in Gypsy. The role of Louise is much less vocally demand than the role of María.
demanding
Whoever did this video did amazing 😍
Edited by yours truly.
