    Okay, I'll just explain because SOMEONE will bring it up. That pic in the thumbnail isn't from the 2000 German GP. It's from the 2003 British GP. Simple reason being there ARE pics from the race on Alamy but Reuters will only license it for editorial purposes, not for website (which is what I have to do). Sometimes you just gotta do a nifty workaround.
    Also I'm mighty annoyed that as soon as I stopped recording my sinuses opened up and my nose unblocked. FFS.

      I love your stories so much. You replay lots of my history. One of my Favorite F1 races I went to. I camped in the Black Forest in 1984. I just lover Elio de Angelis. Alboreto in the Ferrari. Senna In the Tolman. What a time.
      Even better when I went back in 1990 when I got to hear the Normally Asperated through the forest. The best F1 sound I ever heard. Nothing topped that Ferrari V12 for noise. How I wish I could hear it again. I think I'm going to go to one of those Ferrari Demo days at Monza for my next vacation.

    I always loved Rubens for being able to be really emotional in moments like this. He was easily the most human driver on the grid during this era. Everyone loved Rubens, he was impossible to hate and everyone wanted to see him do well.

    Being only 5 years old, I remember only seeing him crying on the podium and thinking to myself "why is he crying so much? Has he cried that much every time he won a race?" obviously not knowing it was his first. I've watched it again as a grown up, and having listened to a few podcasts with him as a guest, it only made me cry too..

  • @y_fam_goeglyd
    @y_fam_goeglyd ปีที่แล้ว +8

    No matter how often I see even clips of this race, which was astounding in its own right, seeing him crying on the top step reduces me to an absolute puddle of tears. I only have to see that picture of him on the podium! Who needs video?
    He's one of those drivers where you might not have been a total fanboi of his, but you were definitely happy whenever he did well, even at the cost of your favourite. There's a whole bunch of drivers through history like that. E.g. who'd object to, say, Alex Albon winning a race? Or Yuki, or the Hulk... Or any number of others on today's grid? There's been some very moving race wins over the years, but he always made me cry, damn it!

  • @SaraSpruce
    @SaraSpruce ปีที่แล้ว +10

    What a great race that was. Seeing Rubens’ pure joy on the podium made me emotional in a way that only one Grand Prix has managed since, that being Checo’s first win at Sakhir 2020.

  • @dazzlernator
    @dazzlernator ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Seeing Rubens cry with joy on the podium is what sealed his win as the moment I felt happiest for any driver and that still holds true in over 34 years of watching F1. He had a torrid qualifying session the day before and put on what Murray described as a "sensational drive" helped by bizarre circumstances. Even my late father who was usually stoic was moved by Barrichello being so emotional about his win.

    The older Hockenheim was a classic in the 90s, pretty much had the same legendary status with Monaco and Monza. Yeah I know the track was probably 'boring' because of its nature and the people watching the races live next to the track probably did not enjoy the action too much but the track was still legendary and should have remained as it was.
    The shorter version has little to nothing to do with the real Hockenheim and pretty much does not exist to me. I remember watching 1 or 2 races of the new track and stated outloud to my family and friends "This is not Hockenheim but some extremely cheap and bad version of it." and went to do something else instead.

    The German Grand Prix was a mini tradition for me at this point, in that for about a decade or so it was the one European race that I would never see live, because we'd be away to Dublin for my birthday. The 'holiday race' tends to be Hungary these days. All we saw of this race was the late night news on RTE1, not even ITV, report on the race. Mum gutted to see Michael out at the first corner, of course. I couldn't even go "Yes!", the surprise making me go 'what?!' instead. We couldn't believe what we were seeing or hearing as lead commentator Peter Collins concluded his report: "But what a performance! Rubens Barrichello, *18th* at the start, and his first ever grand prix victory, in 124 starts! Rubens Barrichello, possibly the most popular winner ever of a grand prix. The Ferrari team certainly enjoyed it, most of all, his team mate!" It was a race I only saw in 2 minute highlights reels for years, and could only imagine every twist and turn. Finally got to see the full footage on Sky, then on F1TV. F1TV has raw footage, no graphics. What a race to miss!

    It's not that nostalgia is cocaine for old people per se, it's the dishonesty of it. Pretty much nobody liked the classic Hockenheim - it was the boring track that took away Jim Clark - and I agree with Brundle that all they took away were the areas where drivers could kill themselves. Post-'02 Hockenheim might not be Spa, but it's a decent circuit in its own right and I've had some fun races there (even if most of them were in DTM rather than F1).

  • @hvh377
    @hvh377 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Everybody by that time felt Rubens deserved that win. Great driver, great guy, who had been waiting too long. Disagree on the changed track of 2002: the Hockenheimring was irreparably maimed. Its reason for being was kaputt. Nothing memorable about the circuit was left. Nothing to do with cocaine for old people. They should have just closed it 2002.

    Speaking of things commentators wouldn't say today. In the 1995 pacific GP Murrays Co, I belief it was Jonathan Palmer said something like "if Michal (Schumacher that is) gets out of his car after the race, with out a drop of sweat on his face, I'll personally go down there and punch him in the face."
    (But since almost every single car was screaming Ciggis and Beer!!!! there where other things even lesssuitable for modern TV, I guess^^)
    This doesn't really fit the topic, I know but I enjoyed that quiet a lot and it stood out to me, because two weeks earlier, when watching the Bahrain GP Ralf Schumacher talked about how admirable it is, that Verstappen doesn't even sweat that much in a race like that, or something of that sort. (I usually shut my ears when Ralf is talking, he's the prototype of the boring Bratwurst German)

    Rubens wore his heart on his sleeve. Makes me wonder if, in another team, how well he'd have done around that time.
    Also, this just reminded me of a (hardcover) book I had somewhere before my bookcase fell apart more than Ferrari's season, and the book in question was a hardcover season review of 2000 that went into details on all the things from the year including Rockingham having CART for 2001, DC's plane crash,and a boatload of photos. I swear Mr. Heath got quite a lot in that book, but point is...
    It had a shot of Rubens on the podium as the lead in to the 2000 German GP along with a shot of Schuey out at T1. Anyone else remember the book in question? I want to buy it again now and don't remember the name, or who even published it. I miss the hardcover season review books with all those things inside...

      They were and yet they were great. THe 2000 one was I believe the last year those books were done, or at least that I could find with a quick search. Used to be able to pick them up in book shops of all places though. I found David Tremayne's 96 season guide that had quips and jokes in it, as well so I consider the mid-late 90s the golden age of season review books. Yes you had the videos but, I'll take the hardcover books any day of the week though.
      As for 97, whoever in a serious season review put the Lola team in the grid and did a profile on them made me laugh more than I should have. Then in the other 97 season review which was by a whole other bunch of F1 anoraks, it was not so serious and had quips and jokes scattred throughout, my fave being the 'Did you hear about the Mastercard F1 team, it had the expiry date under the cars' line. It also had a lovely piece on Minardi and how beloved he and the team were in the paddock around that time as well as in depth if not entirely academically written race reviews for each round as well.
