It's finally here! Nissan X-Trail 2023 review: Can the new SUV topple Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5?

  • Nissan has lagged its rivals lately, with the ageing X-Trail family SUV trailing good quality options like the 2023 Kia Sportage, Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson and more.
But the new-generation 2023 X-Trail changes things up big time.
A completely overhauled interior, revised 2.5-litre engine and a big uptick in safety and technology features have all elevated the new X-Trail.
And this time around it will come with an ePower hybrid version too, already tested by CarsGuide.
But pricing is up across the X-Trail range, and not by an insignificant amount. Thankfully, the standard features has also expanded with the pricing.
But has Nissan done enough to ensure the X-Trail is once again considered a worthy competitor to those top-selling family SUVs?
Tim Nicholson has tested the new X-Trail at the Australian media launch to see where the new model stands in the pecking order.

Got the TI-L a couple weeks ago. Great car. Just did a 1300km trip from central Qld to Sydney and was impressed with the quietness and the fuel consumption. I got 6.7L/100K. ProPilot was great on the open road. Very comfy ride and got to the refreshed… and I suffer from back problems. Much more comfy than the X1 I did the trip in 2 years back.

Unfortunately you got a wrong decision if you don't want 7 seats. Outlander is slightly bigger in size. but because of the clever interior design X-Trail has one of the biggest boots in it's category (585L) and it's bigger than the Outlander (578L) and ride quality is better, got bigger screens and feels premium than Outlander.

Toyota RAV4 hybrid XSE FWD for $53k whereas Nissan's xtrial STL-epowered hybrid AWD is $53k and way better premium interior than Toyota’s cheap plastic interior. Kia Sportage hybrid starts from 60k so Nissan is not more expensive than Kia and Hyundai right now.

What is it with this semi-recent trend of AWD models having to be 7 seaters? Why can't the consumer have a choice of a 5 seater with AWD and hence more usable cargo area? I'd wager it would be the best seller in the range even at a lower trim grade.

Buy RAV 4 if you want very dated interior. But fuel economy wise RAV 4 is "slightly" better than an X-Trail. I don't know whether it's a meaningful difference or not.

I recently sold my T32 X Trail-am not a fan of the CVT. Initially it was bearable but over time it became annoying-the whining and always in the wrong gear ratio.
Overall the car was so-so but it was let down by the inept engine, cranky CVT and eventually the ride quality went poopy. I'd like to love my X Trail but I keep getting disappointed.

Mine is good except for three failed front right wheel bearings, cam timing sensor, engine position sensor, seized cylinder head thermostat resulting in blown radiator, a crack down the middle of the windscreen when parked in a shopping centre car park, fuel pump failure and fuel gauge failure. Noisy cabin on the highway but other than that...OK. Oh! And water ingress through the tail light seal filling up the spare wheel area when it rained hard and failed serpentine belt tension bearing.
