    Greetings, and cheers for putting together such an amazing playlist showcasing HEMA. I wanted to offer some advice/constructive criticism based on my own experience throwing zornhaus in training and sparring. The method that Gregor is using is the manner in which I used to throw zornhaus, i.e., by focusing first on deflecting the attack and then on putting the point back online and stepping in for the thrust. This is fine if there's no other option. However, a more effective and ideal way to execute zorn is this: rather than lean backwards defensively, strike the opponent's sword, then adjust the point and thrust, instead take a step off the center line (to Gregor's right side and slightly forward, toward the opponent) and at the same moment, throw the zorn at the opponent's weapon. Taking the offline step ensures that the point of your own sword stays online with the opponent. Furthermore, taking a slightly forward offline step also turns the zorn into both a defense (as it still parries the incoming attack) and an attack, in that the counter-thrust is already online by virtue of the offline step AND your opponent will often impale him/herself on the thrust as the zorn concludes.
    For anyone interested in seeing this, the first exchange in this video demonstrates what I'm describing. You can clearly see the defender take the offline step slightly forward and, as he throws the zorn, his tip is online and executes the thrust to the opponent's face all in one fluid motion. Cheers, mates!

    Great video! Would Zornhau work on montantes' as well? I suppose montantes are similar to longswords to some extent, but it seems that historical masters of montante didn't mention similar techniques like Zornhau...

    • @Dreynschlag
      @Dreynschlag  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hi and thanks! Unfortunately I don't have a lot of experience with the montante as we focus on the german tradition. I suppose it might work but you typically don't seek the bind with a montate. Btw you might find the montante videos from (for example) Ton Puey or Matt Galas interesting.

  • @patrioticrealist6862
    @patrioticrealist6862 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    The source material clearly states to NOT make a separate attempt to parry but directly point to the head while raising your hilt above your head...? Is it not supposed to be a single step move? Not parry and then thrust but do it all in one move?

    • @Dreynschlag
      @Dreynschlag  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi and thanks for your feedback! What the treatises say is (let’s take PvD or Ringeck): If your opponent strikes to your head from his right side, strike from your right side strongly on his sword. If he is weak in the bind then thrust to his face or body.
      haut er dir denn von seiner rechtñ seitten oben ein zu° dem kopff | So haw auch von dein° rechten seitten von oben an alle vor satzung | Mit im zornigklich ein auf sein swert | Ist er denn waich öm swert | so seüß im den ort gericht für sich lanck ein | vnd stich im zu° dem gesicht oder der prüst.
      And that is what happens in our interpretation (though I admit it’s controversial). It is a fluent motion of course but we have cut it to pieces and slowed down for demo-purposes.

    • @patrioticrealist6862
      @patrioticrealist6862 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Dreynschlag Ah, I see. I should learn to be more careful. I mistook a 'further explanation' by Winslow and Trosclair to be additional translation from PvD and Ringeck. I definitely should print the documents out to make it clearer to myself. Thank you for your demonstrations and explanations. I am still trying to find a clear demonstration of Zornhau in the more typical interpretation as well. Subbed, sir.

    • @michaeldrummond3857
      @michaeldrummond3857 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the guy making the initial cut does not do so from the position you showed in your first video, although depending on the source neither is necessarily wrong. The sources do not say to lean back to make a suppressive cut but to meet his blade in your own step.
      The assumption is that you will wind on his blade for the stab but leaning back allows him to follow from longpoint wind through an Einhorn thrust. Failing that your obvious strike to the blade must be done in a manner that will not provoke a hanging guard and movement away from the wind and thrust.
      Gloss: Mark, the Wrath-hew breaks all Over-hews with the point, and yet is nothing other than a simple peasant strike, and drive it thus: When you come to him with the pre-fencing, if he then hews at your head from above on his right side, then hew also with him wrathfully from your right side from above, without any parrying, on his sword. If he is then Soft on the sword, then shoot in the long point straight before you and stab him to the face or the breast. So Set-on him.

    I assume it´s a dance for and backward. Looks easy move but only when your opponent don´t make own move after first move. If the opponent is a pro he will attack with a multiple combo and not wait peaceful for the reply.
    I am sure the real fight doesn´t look like a graceful dance.
    Great video of basic movement.

    Oh this is amazing! I am doing roleplay and my characters are mostly adept at swordfighting and I needed some kind of guide to better help me write. Though it is usually Naruto roleplays, and the weapon will usually be a katana or a tanto.

    hey so im watching these bc i recently started animating and i want to animate sword fighting with enough realism that it doesnt break suspended disbelief. id rather like to know when and where these techniques come from bc if im asked abt my style and process animating i want to be able to say specifically, i based my sword fighting off of techniques from this time period and this place.

    I try to sword fight with my brother (with wood swords) but he just picks up the sword and swings It left to right it is really easy to beat I just put my sword in the line of his attack and when they collide my bro’s sword just falls out of his hand

    Dear friends, Thank you for this video! I always wondered how to block with the sword, particularly what edge is blocking. My concern is that if you block it with cutting edge it becomes damaged and weapon becomes wreck/ Or one has to block it with flat surface of sword ? We all would appreciate your comment on that

    • @gregorsuchentrunk388
      @gregorsuchentrunk388 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To block with the sharp edge is more stabil in and in most cases more efective. Think about what´s important, in a fight with sharp swords: a damaged sword or a damaged body?

    • @dmitryvolkov8508
      @dmitryvolkov8508 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gregorsuchentrunk388 Dear Gregor! Thank you for your comment! It is quite reasonable and logical. I guess there were special maintenance after fights at smith workshops to remove damages and sharpen the sword again

    How will I preform the basic counter-attack shown for a swing in a different direction than shown?

  • @Casedilla73

    I’m here because one of the handles of my shower door fell off because it’s so old, and i tried to put it back on, but it kept falling and making a lot of noise, so I decided to steal it and use it as short blunt sword that looks a little too much like a metal stick.

  • @umartdagnir
    @umartdagnir 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    This is not Zornhau, this is a parry + thrust. Look at Anton Kohutovič's enterpretation:
    th-cam.com/video/sMVNKpHTY5A/w-d-xo.html
    Zornhau is a cut straight into your opponent, where you defeat his Oberhau with a strong body structure and a more vertical strike angle.

    • @Dreynschlag
      @Dreynschlag  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      We know Anton and we know his interpretation - we even mentioned it in the comment section. In fact we did ZH in a similar way some years ago and there were some other interpretations before as well. But: We interpret Zornhau-Ort different now. It's of course absolutely fine if you think Antons ZH is better or ours is wrong but after all both are interpretations (!). And don't forget that different ideas about how a technique might work is what helped HEMA to develop within the last 20 year since we are doing this stuff.

    Would it also be possible to bring your opponents sword down towards the ground using a technique similar to this?

    • @Dreynschlag
      @Dreynschlag  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wrestling is a big part of the german fencing style. We implemented one throw that is easy to learn in our beginner tutorial: th-cam.com/video/P3h2II5O2Sk/w-d-xo.html

    Is there a variety of this Sword style with a shortsword or is it longsword specific? If so, where would I go to learn how to effectively use a shortsword?

    • @Dreynschlag
      @Dreynschlag  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well since it's a longsword guide the techniques are usually done with both hands on the grip. The basics however are universal. But if you are looking for a guide for onehanded swords I suggest to search for "sword & buckler" (arming sword) or "Langes Messer" for example. However both aren't exactly "shortswords" (depending on the definition). An arming sword looks like the typical "knights sword" from the movies. Langes Messer is a single edged weapon - unfortunately I am not aware of any guide (but there is a 10 year old demo vid in our channel if you wanna know what it looks like). When it comes to sword/buckler you can find a very basic workshop held by Herbert Schmidt in our channel and I highly recommend to visit Roland Warzechas/Dimicators channel as well. Or search for guids for typical iron age shortswords like the gladius or xiphos.
