I love this. I really wanna learn sword-fighting, I always have. I've looked for classes over the years but they're all fencing and such. I'm looking for stuff like this.
*Me trying to learn how to defend against my mom's slippers* Edit: a year of training has passed. Tommorow, at dawn. I fight my mother. Mark my words. I will win this. Edit: I lost. But this does not meet the end of me. I am now learning the ways of a long stick with a pointy edge, this might be my last update.
That's why I follow midevil fighting classes. I feel like that if you do it yourself, you can get better in your head of your characters. How does if feel to hold a sword ? It can also lead to new inspiration.
I wish there was a awesome sword fighting class like this in the USA :( I’ve been wanting to be thought in the ways of medieval sword fighting for the longest time but all the ones I find around here don’t know what they are doing and or haven’t picked up one in this life and try to act like it’s normal. I have a zweihander I’ve been really wanting to brake into but have no idea how my form and strikes should be. Videos help but it’s not the same as real learning from people like this
Longswords were typically held like shown in our video. Other weapons like Messer, Rapier (different century) or large Bidenhänder (depending on the source) for example, were held and wielded differently.
ah, i bought a sword two years ago (i mostly bought it cause it came with throwing knives, i learned how to use those) and now that we're still in quarantine i finally gonna do something with it. I always keep it next to my bed but never learned how to use it. Thanks for this!
Thanks for teaching me this basic attack, i recently made my own wooden 2 handed sword and i was really eager to learn how to use it, i will now proceed to subscribe to you and practice this move everyday, thank you
It's good that you guys are posting tutorials on here starting with the most basic information. Not everyone is already familiar with sword techniques.
Top stuff, I'll be looking out for more of these videos. Well explained and clearly demonstrated, taking the most important steps into account. They are nice for beginners, but even the most experienced swordsman needs to regularly review the basics, so this series will/should definitely have a large audience.
I’m just starting this hobby myself but with it being this time of year and bad weather and not being able to afford the proper equipment right now I’m practicing using wood swords (for stances), blade and sorcery (for fun and trying realistic fighting styles) and when the weather isn’t raining I’m using a machete in the garden with some plastic bottles etc. Since I’m only doing it at home and laws in the UK are awkward with swords I take what I can get but I like this channel because not many people go through the full basics for beginners and when they do they try to make it super fancy and over the top but I like this. Simple, effective and most importantly shows you all you need to know and the attack is on display so you can see it properly executed
Thanks for the lessons man! I just got a Scottish two-handed longsword and I really wanna git gud at using this thing! It's nice to find such short, to-the-point lessons that are easy to follow like this.
This is great. As an amateur writer, I'm trying to practise writing sword fights, and this is pretty helpful. I've also wanted to learn sword-fighting, but I have no sword, so I'll have to make do with a stick from the garden until I can get a real one.
Tbh, if you're literally just staring out, just start right handed. Muscle memory doesn't really carry over that much, even from other weapons, and it makes things much easier in the long run.
I love swords now. I just bought a "Nodachi" sword as my first (broadsword used against cavalry) and i love it. Gives me a good workout too. I'll be using a sword during the tribulation , its the best way to fight demons , up close and personal. Coming soon to everyone. Good luck and see you on the other side.
From most fun to least fun (although least fun is still really fun): Rapier/sidesword and Dagger > Longsword > Backsword > saber > sword and shield/buckler IMO
I've always had a fascination with swords, and recently, I started reading A Court Of Silver Flame. So now I'm obsessed and want to learn. I'm hoping to one day use one of my real swords.

Few things... 1. The guy standing as a mannequin for the attack has a good, relaxed Vom Tag. The guy actually demonstrating the cut has low, cocked, and mechanically inferior Vom Tag. 2. Cutting forward and taking a step - cool. Leaving your back foot at the same place and not even turning it is terrible biomechanics - you basically leave almost half of your body weight and intent behind. 3. Hitting at neck level is not basic. You should hit the head. It is clear that the guy is not well protected when his sword is so low - if the other guy actually hit him, not just place the sword there, he would most likely kill him with that strike. 4. Cutting cabbage doesn't actually show anything - you can do those cuts with a blunt sword with a rounded edge and not much effort.
Hi! Short answer: yes. The sword starts the movement, your foot follows. The long answer: Master Sigmund Ringeck wrote on that topic: „Darum so merck von welcher sÿtten du haust / dz du mitt dem selbigen fuß haw nachfolgest so magstu mitt sterck alle dein stuck gerecht trÿbeñ“. Actually, more and more women are starting with hema every year. At our annual event in February where we host over 240 fencers from all over Europe. About 20 percent of them are approximately women. :)
You might look into smallsword and rapier, then. They are by no means easier or lighter weapons (I mean, of course they're lighter, but the positions are more extended and you only have one hand on the weapon, so they become quite heavy after a while) instead of longsword. She uses a smallsword, but from the scene I've seen with Briann of Tarth (sp?) Arya used it like a rapier (smallswords literally cannot cut)
