While I appreciate all the technical know-how and skill that goes into these episodes, from content, over filming, to editing, I love the fact that the Modern Rogue is basically two dudes doing whatever the hell they want while a camera records them. lol
As a HEMA-practitioner, it's always great fun to see the art getting exposure. Also, it's interesting to see different views on the same things I already know, because it gives me a deeper understanding of the techniques. Great video.

Yea! I'm doing Hema since about 8-9 month and it is interesting to see diffrent styles. Were i train we hold the sword on the pommel for more quicker faints.
I studied it, didnt have alot of experience but knew how to defend alot of vectors and how to counter, i also mixed things up and would run in at them set up a vector for me to counter and land a strike. I had some larp dude beat by just knowledge alone, and then he was like put on armor and starts getting in this wrestling squat behind his shield and like backing be down and would like close distance, but only really because he had his shield. I was like dude is this really what ur about ? If you really wanna study the art, practice the blade and becoming as fast and natural with it as possible, dont worry about styles or this and that. I came at the guy with a kendo style run in and nailed him, he was expecting me to stop and sit there and exchange with him lol. He had little knowledge on how to defend properly from every angle and vector, nor could reposte or counter much, i wasnt really impressed and this was supposed to be some LARPER like dude, but all they do is charge around in armor from what i can see, living in fantasy land. Learn how to defend every angle someone can attack you from, how to counter from those angles, footwork. Master all that and youll make people look stupid. Get a well balanced sword and learn its distance, but balance is important. And these arent longswords, these are like bastard or hand and a half swords, to me there not worth it, ur trading alot of weight for not that much distance wich is more important.
@@panzerhamster5814 Yeah, switching up stances is something i do. Im untrained by hema i know people who had some training tho, and have taught me quite well. Tho these swords in this video arent longswords, or what i would train with. These are like hand and a half swords or bastard swords, to me there not worth it ur trading alot of weight for not that much distance, someone with a lighter longsword it might be slightly shorter but itll be much lighter and hell be most likely able to get inside you quicker and more easier because of this, just like how short boxers with not much reach like tyson did, his style was around his frame, so he closed distance extremely well.
As a paranoid nerd who feels like they should be prepared for a situation where one day I may have to use swords to uphold my honour and vanquish foes (ultimately saving the world naturally ) , I love this so much. Please more like this

But, at least it would be the Vancouver area. There is a ton of cool stuff they could do there. Survival training, a lot of TV/Movies are shot there so maybe they could figure something out with that, meet up with Linus and do another crazy tech sort of thing.

Korzik I'd prefer they collab with sword's path. Like these guys, SP is a pretty chill guy who doesn't get all snobbish over incorrect/inaccurate swordplay like many others do. I am annoyed and sick of the fact it's hard to learn about swordsmanship without some guy like Skallagrimm, Lindybeige or shadiversity acting dramatic and haughty over artistic interpretation (it's one thing to point out like how SP occasionally does. It's another to be uptight about it, especially if it's over a weapon that is rendered obselete in modern day). But with Sword's path, he's a cool guy. Plus, I have heard that he is an even better fighter than Skallagrimm.
My favorite part of the show is how educated and professional you guys are about everything you do!

These guys sum up my first experience with historical fencing. The excitement, the exhaustion been through all that. Sparring really is a different beast than normal exercise doesn't matter how fit you are or how heavy you are, everyone gasses out at the end of that first minute!
Alfatazer at first yeah, sparring is when you realize that you may be able to run a marathon but your general fitness is still below what is required. Then you ease into it and end up with being able to do this for 30 minutes with minimal loss of effectiveness.

Tired and sore at the end but completely willing to spar for as long as physically possible.
Getting better, more courageous, cunning, smart and advanced by the day. Completely inversed athletic experiences in HEMA, it seems.

As someone who sword fights and practices these techniques, I would have loved a second episode where they got into some more advanced stuff. ALSO I am very shocked when he grabbed the sword and said this is something you can do, the guys didn't freak and question that. For those wondering, yes, you can totally grab a sword by the blade and not get cut, but there's a technique to it.

I tend to prefer bastard swords. I just generally love versatility in anything I own and the ability to use it as a slightly worse single handed or two handed sword appeals to me.
@@Freakmaster480 They're one and the same! Longswords can be used one-handed, and that was done in both Italian longsword stuff (Fiore, I believe) as well as from horseback. Longswords cover a huge range of sizes, blade lengths, balance between cutting and thrusting, and more, and there will be some more suited to one-handed use than others, but as a category they can be used in one hand.
As someone who did fencing for a long time I'm surprised how the difference in being allowed to bind the swords makes it so much different. "let the sword lead you" had me screaming internally...
Well, the thing with Hema is, is that there are a lot of different approaches to it.

yeah........ that's sooo not true - I'm training HEMA and for most of the cuts you hold the sword with the second hand on the pommel (sry for being one month late but that statement just bothered me when I read it D: )
It was a joke referring to throwing your pommel at the opponnent.
Depends on the source material and how the instructor interprets it. For instance Goliath shows a lot of close grips, while the Stimmer cuts in Meyer's book depict fencers with only a tentative grip on the very end of the pommel. I think it's safe to say this is one of those areas where it's impossible to be either right or wrong. Personally my hands travel all over the hilt while I fence depending on the cut I'm making, lol.
Ms.3227a for example explicitly tells you not to grab the pommel as it serves as a counterweight. This is the only KdF source which in the text tells you how to hold the source, so for that tradition at least it's quite persuasive. Not to mention no pommel gripper has yet had much major success in high level cutting competition. That doesn't mean it's impossible, but it is harder to cut someone and train yourself to do it well.

This is one of the best videos of HEMA I've seen. In other videos, there is too much choreography without the physics fundamentals, or the "why". Understanding the "why" frees the fighter and enables him/her to develop his/her own style, based on his/her strengths and weaknesses.

These guys are annoying as fuck.
These body mechanics and fighting concepts are absolutely fundamental to martial arts of any culture. The same way you use the sword is the same way you use open hand. I love crash course lessons like this because the instructor will often give away a great summed-up description of something that took years to understand yet in a way that one can understand it quicker
It's really amazing how much this differs from my experience with the basics of Kendo. I might try to find some HEMA instructors around where I live, it looks really interesting.
Some things are different, a lot of overlap, though.
Kendo is very limited because of their many rules
If you want to learn real Japanese swordsmanship you’re better off with kenjutsu and sparring with friends bc most kenjutsu schools unfortunately don’t spar.

Super interesting hearing different views on sword mechanics, the version and region of longsword I practice (Fiore) has you almost exclusively grab the pommel with the off-hand when not using it to grapple.
Not sure which system they're using, and I can't comment on Liechtenauer or Mair, but Meyer does have you grabbing the pommel as well. Meyer's grip is shown differently in different techniques, from the hands actually touching to just cupping the pommel with the palm from underneath. There's a lot of variance.
This is the coolest thing I have ever seen in my entire life. I have a few sword analogs I will be digging out of storage to try some of this stuff. Nothing sharp as I am a blind uncoordinated fool, but yeah

Well, it's completely different technique from what I've learned during five years of historical fencing in central Europe... I mean - even if I compare Italian and Geman fencing schools (including Talhoffer) with this, it's really different base of movement and sword handling...
Of course it doesn't mean it's wrong. There is constant fight between schools about which has better technique. Always was and always will be...
Nevertheless, you did good job with your attempts.

I expected this to be a fluff piece. But, I'll be the first to admit i was wrong. This was a really well done introduction in long sword fencing. I commend the Rogues, Austin historical weapons guild and their instructors!

I did fencing with any éppe from 4th to 8th grade. This brings back so many memories. Actually beat the kid that was 4th in the nation in my age group. I still have my blade in my room. You guys should do an episode with one of the schools in the US that does fighting with light sabers. Terra prime light armory here on TH-cam has a light saber academy in real life. I just love this episode. If I had more blades I'd offer to teach you that kind of fencing

Now I know this is beginners basics and all, but the way these guys are going at it, static binds and trying to overpower the other, well, we have this guy in our local HEMA school (Germany), his technique flows like water. You push against his blade to displace him and before you know what happened he hit you over the head.
"Verhängen" , stepping out and throwing a new cut would instantly end anyone trying to control a bind like that. Then again, an advanced practitioner would not use more force then necessary and avoid pushing against the opponents blade when he can still redirect.
But for 30 minutes, this was pretty darn good. Took me a lot longer to get into something workable, but we also take it a bit slower at our school.

Sorry but not grabbing the pommel is pure BS. There are many "Haue" that require grabbing the pommel in order to strike properly. HEMA is not about punching your opponent with the blade until he resigns, the strikes need a lot of mobility and therefore require different grips.
For basic cuts, it's fine to start off with a basic grip. I don't think Jason or Bryan are ready to learn Liechtenauer's Master Blows yet, and they aren't studying in the Fiore tradition, so it's perfectly fine to not grab the pommel when you're just learning basic stuff.
this is a old comment, but I agree with you. I think its worth mentioning this discussion is a huge debate in the hema community. These guy are referring to the dobringer text that almost literally says that not holding the pommel will make your strike truer and faster, I've tried it and never felt that. Moving the hands first, once again a huge debate in hema, some texts like silver say you must move the hands first, others like meyer say no the feet and hands move at the same time or the cut/thrust is useless unless your feinting. I'm a meyerist and his text shows holding the pommel 95% of the time. I agree getting the sword in front of oneself first is good, but you lose a lot of structure and power moving the hands first when cutting, because the power comes from the legs. It seems to work better for thrusts in my experience, none the less good timing makes moving hands and feet at the same time work, I'm not a believer in moving the hands first making you faster like silver says, if it does its not a significant difference.
@@TheCrimsonIdol987 I don't think the guys talking about using master cuts, I think hes referring to the debate of not grabbing the pommel making you faster and more accurate. The dobringer text says this is true but other texts show fencers exclusively holding the pommel and many hema'ist such as myself do not feel a significant benefit in practice to not holding the pommel. You see highly skilled fencers using both practices so in the end I think there is more than one way to skin a cat.
@@ericnesbitt1734 Right, I was just thinking when I watched this video that it was merely "interesting", and that he was most likely speaking from the specific "master" or "style" that they are learning from their texts. Different swordsmen of the era had different preferences, grips, cuts, etc, and all had their stated reasons for such.
