I've recently gave my last two cans of salmon to the cats from the neighbors, since I saw a program on the Norvegian salmon farms. I've decide to eliminate for good this fish from my menu. Now I know about what is actually in the cans or in plastic wrapper, I'm surprised a) shops still offer salmon for sale and b) that not more people know about the criminal aspects of what probably is one of the most poisonous foods available. Shame on you, Canada, Norway, Scotland, Ireland & co. Shame !
So why start a fish farm instead of starting a hatchery on a river so fish will migrate to the oceans and back to the river, don't feed the fish with toxins??
One thing I did not see mentioned in this documentary it’s kept pretty quiet and a lot of people don’t know about it but those pens they use defoliants on those pens and that defoliant is the cousin to agent orange. Now the US that’s the fight in Vietnam they were around ancient orange almost all of them are dead and they’re Dead from cancer. When the farmed salmon or harvested 25 to 30% of it is discarded because they are so skinny and sick and anemic or they have tumors on them their heads are misshapen they are messed up. They don’t want you to know about that part they only sell the fish that look real great but you’re eating nothing but pure poison.
Funny nothing is mentioned about the effects of people eating this fish. Isn't that the intended goal anyway, to feed them to everyone with no regard to the safety of eating it? It's just a big government cover up in Canada.
I have a solution to the whole problem. First step is the only fish farms aloud should be land based pond fish farms. With 1/2 mile from the ocean. They can buy the land and dig ponds to raise the fish. Then submit water quality test to an independent facility 2 times per month. Plus after the grow out of one crop of fish the pond is emptied and the bottom waist cleaned up. Then refilled with water. At no time can water from these ponds be returned to the ocean waters. The water from each pond emptied and can be filtered to clean it up. The pollution that the is caused by ocean fish farming is a cost to anyone that eats fish, or anything else. An who wants to go to the beach and have a great day with toxic fish and water ? This idea is the best way to deal with fish farming. Keep them out of our oceans and bays. Move them into ponds and keep it clean. In time even the fish farmers will see the cost benefit of pond raising fish. The diseases and sea lice will be gone. It is a win win.
And you can only use medicated feed once per 18 month crop, not constantly. Many things have changed since this video was made, or many things were stretched out to seem worse than what they are.
As it was stated in the documentary, Democracy is far more than showing up to vote from time to time. It's about research, getting involved in issues one cares about, telling others your concerns, blogging and last but not least, it's about where you spend your money. With these pen raised salmon, they can do all the pens they want and crank out zillions of salmon, but if NOBODY wants them because it is destroying wild salmon stocks, that industry ain't going to last. Period.
Unfortunately, saving the planet is a bigger job than any government can do. It is up to individuals to do their part, and to influence their cultures toward sustainability. Besides, that is not the purpose of government, not to get too political.
Job vs the environment. If it comes down to doing what's necessary for self survival of self and family, it's only logical that the "here and now" quality of life issue of self preservation wins out over future ecological concerns and species preservation concerns. The economic paradigm we are entrenched in is too entrenched to change it to a new philosophy of ecological super-conscience mode (as is needed) - is unrealistic thinking.
Can someone explain how these farm raised mutants can have any effect on wild populations? They (farm raised) have never seen a natural stream, so how can they spawn, as their whole life is but a piece of a true salmon's life?
they are raised in the streams and mouths of streams and rivers were wild salmon migrate so any farmed salmon get. plus all the fecal matter piling up in these streams makes the wild salmon sick
ValcoBayrunner very true but lobsters naturally live in burrows and don't move around as much as salmon. that means the management of spread of disease and sediment build up is far greater managed because the eco system and lobsters have evolved over time to better suit a farm
There's only one way to farm fish. Of any sort of species, farmed fish need to be kept inland; that is, on land. On land, total costs are accounted by the producer.
Many legislators in the US are beholden to the coal industry. The coal industry dispenses largesse to their supporters. Is it possible the fish farming industry does the same thing in Canada?
I don't know why they can't have something below these pins to catch the fishes waste so they can just pump the shit out of the water seems like it wouldn't be that expensive or very hard?
close containers is just common sense. but i would still never eat farmed salmon because of the feed they use. Just put a wild salmon and farmed salmon side by side and it tells all.
They say nothing will not live under the farms, but I’ve noticed a lot of lobster fishermen that set there traps around the cages because the lobsters are plentiful, and I’ve seen it for my own eyes so whoever said nothing can’t live under the farm is blowing off bullshit
I'm not disputing your assertion, but I'd like to see the specific scenario wherein the lobsters thrive. Please make notes on the conditions including any toxins in the water and include pictures.
so people would rather destroy the already dwindlig ecosystem of the oceans instead of creating farms were wild populations are not affected in the least? what has the world come to?
There is a documentary on youtube about salmon farming on the west coast that is diseasing and killing off the wild salmon as well as farmed salmon. It is proven that three diseases have been transmitted from eggs purchased from Norways toxic salmon farms. Farms are not saving the population when they are feeding the fish with pellets containing poisons that are banned to be used anywhere near any other meat source in the human food chain. Monsanto produces that highly questionable poison and it has been detected in fish on the counter.
Government should not be in their set if they can't take care of their responsibilities and care what's going on, especially what's going on with any type of fisheries and fish farms and the pellets that are feed to the fish that have toxins in the feed. How blind can you be also ignorant.
We need to get rid of these people that are against the betterment of mankind..we need to vote them out..we need people that work for humanity.. not against..🤔
I love salmon, but after watching the documentary on BC fish farming and the wild fish being diseased from those fish farms I won't even buy wild salmon. There will not be really solutions, until we don't accept a basic fact: we cannot eat so much fish, there is no sustainable way to produce enough fish if everyone on earth wants to eat like we do. The REAL solution is to adapt our diet to what is best for us, namely plant-based diet, and those who want should consume animal products, fish included, very rarely, according to nature's cycle. This would make wild fishing sustainable. The fish-farming industry would shut down production plants and convert itself into something else less damaging for the environment and the human health.
