Extra context for those initiated to NASCAR: The man who has won more races and is tied for the most season championships in NASCAR history is a guy named Richard Petty. I wouldn't necessarily consider him a progressive, as he did say some homophobic stuff back in the days of the AIDS scare, but... when he was a driver, he led the drivers union (although they called it an "association" for semantic purposes), in which they even sanctioned a race walkout. He's been retired from racing for over 25 years, but he still owns a team in his name, with his likeness. Right now, the man who drives his car is the only black driver in the top series of NASCAR. Tonight that team raced with a #BLACKLIVESMATTER themed car. NASCAR was never the problem. NASCAR fans were the problem.

The fact that nascar not only said publicly and made it a point to support black lives matter was something I didn't expect. NASCAR tried to ban the battle flag of the army of northern Virginia a few years ago.all their fans just started to boycott and they lost their spine. Only time will tell if this will last. I truly hope they stick to their guns this time.

The funny thing about this is especially when dealing with the statues or bases named after generals there is always one person missing from. The panel of talking heads....an actual historian that specializes in those individuals. There are some i agree should never ever be immortalized Calhoun, Bedford Forrest, Steven's and while we are at it throw in Sherman and Sheridan unless you approve of targeting women and children. But others like Lee, Jackson, Longstreet that did not fight to keep slavery in place but rather because they believed their highest duty was to their home state. And before you try.....there is no debate about this it has been accepted history for 160 years and no reputable historian disputes it. This was a Civil War i find it funny that people that have never made a tougher decision than paper or plastic think they can pass judgment on people that had to choose to go to war with their country or against their own family.

I don’t think trump just “refused” to rename those bases honestly, if you look at his quote. “These Monumental and very Powerful Bases have become part of a Great American Heritage.” The word “heritage” doesn’t feel accidental here, it feels like a blatant dog whistle.
Perhaps we should name those bases after people like Ulysses S. Grant and William Tecumseh Sherman! We'll see how those "respect our Southern heritage" types like it when we impose a little Union heritage on them. He just seems to have really good situational awareness on the grand scale, and sound reasoning abilities. You have to parse him directly, cause he's not just repeating something from somewhere else. He reads between the lines of the usual news coverage, plus he clearly has had some unique real life experiences that firmly plant his mindset at street level where the people are. If you want to paint him into a box of some sort, you're going to have to work every day to keep him in there cause he's not that simple; he forces you into the nuances which is again... where the people actually are that have to deal with these nonsensical falsely-dichotomized arguments that are disseminated from the Left and Right's conversational architects. He's turning their daily allocated narrow-framed narratives on themselves and helping people visualize the absurdity of the lies and half-truths they're trying to pass off as reality. I've enjoyed the daily thought exercise, cause it either obliterates unexamined thoughts or metastasizes your own delusional convictions, depending on your brain's plasticity level. Stick around and absorb a thought or two; it can't hurt ya to process a new idea or a differing perspective. Your resolve isn't that fragile is it?

The fanbase is pretty toxic; I remember doing one of our semiannual fundraisers at Phoenix International Raceway back when I was in high school with my JROTC class, someone in the crowd yelled “wetback” at me and I knew it was me since I was the only Mexican-American in the group in my particular seat-back rental stand. So even though NASCAR isn’t my favorite sport, I applaud the organization for deciding to no longer pander to those particular toxic fans.

The funny thing about this is especially when dealing with the statues or bases named after generals there is always one person missing from. The panel of talking heads....an actual historian that specializes in those individuals. There are some i agree should never ever be immortalized Calhoun, Bedford Forrest, Steven's and while we are at it throw in Sherman and Sheridan unless you approve of targeting women and children. But others like Lee, Jackson, Longstreet that did not fight to keep slavery in place but rather because they believed their highest duty was to their home state. And before you try.....there is no debate about this it has been accepted history for 160 years and no reputable historian disputes it. This was a Civil War i find it funny that people that have never made a tougher decision than paper or plastic think they can pass judgment on people that had to choose to go to war with their country or against their own family.

He just seems to have really good situational awareness on the grand scale, and sound reasoning abilities. You have to parse him directly, cause he's not just repeating something from somewhere else. He reads between the lines of the usual news coverage, plus he clearly has had some unique real life experiences that firmly plant his mindset at street level where the people are. If you want to paint him into a box of some sort, you're going to have to work every day to keep him in there cause he's not that simple; he forces you into the nuances which is again... where the people actually are that have to deal with these nonsensical falsely-dichotomized arguments that are disseminated from the Left and Right's conversational architects. He's turning their daily allocated narrow-framed narratives on themselves and helping people visualize the absurdity of the lies and half-truths they're trying to pass off as reality. I've enjoyed the daily thought exercise, cause it either obliterates unexamined thoughts or metastasizes your own delusional convictions, depending on your brain's plasticity level. Strings 1043 I’m straight outta India and I find NASCAR interesting. An Indian guy from my town raced once in a NASCAR truck series after trying F1, I believe the NASCAR fans voted him their favorite driver or something like that. Narain Karthikeyan is his name. Clearly not all NASCAR stands are filled with bigots.

I hope you're right. But I know that even if you are and things are finally moving in the right direction, things will start sliding backwards again as soon as enough people stop paying attention. I just hope people remember to stay vigilant and not let any of this happen again or we'll still be having these same conversations 20 years from now.
