      I am 49. None of this have i evwr heard before. Through high school. Only thing i recall....Lincoln Freed the slaves. Guess that you get from rasist teachers, one i recall stated Lincoln regretted it.
      I lived in a county in wv with ZERO people of color.

      I believe (any historian listening pls correct if wrong) it was illegal in many/most/all southern states to free slaves. State laws did not recognize any such thing as a "freed slave". They couldn't even if they wanted to (short of transporting their slaves north to free them). That's why some Quakers bought some slaves and let them live (in relative freedom) on their farms, because that was the only way they could give them effective freedom, if not full legal freedom.

It was essentially legal to not only free a slave but to rape, murder, starve and/or kill them because they were considered property. And although the Emancipation Proclamation freed the slaves it didn't grant them citizenship. It wasn't until the 14th Amendment (1868) that African-Americans had citizenship and the right to read/write.(" "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside ...")

      I agree re: always learning! 60yr from MN, and I hate to show my ignorance, but I honestly didn't know what this was about before, never heard of it. When I first heard a newscaster say it , I thought that's a weird way to say Trump is holding a rally in June, but the final date isn't set.     Proof of systemic racism in the US
    I am 61+ years old, educated, history buff, veteran (not sure that is relevant but...) and white.
    And yesterday was the first time I’ve heard the term Juneteenth. my head has never been in the sand. I’m disappointed in our schools, our leaders and the media for not making Juneteenth a thing. Didn’t even mention it!

      56 years old, born & raised a PrunePicker (native born Californian) ..... and I learned about it in High School AP History ..... I’m thinking it was due more to our Teacher - whose family was decimated by the Armenian Genocide - than the curriculum. Lots of hidden history that needs to be brought to light

      Sharecropping was basically a way to address the huge gap left when the free labor disappeared. Mostly blacks but also some poor whites were used. It was a purely economic motivation.

      Same here unfortunately. The algorithm told me that if I liked Tre Crowder than I may like Beau. It passed through my stream for 3 days before I finally clicked. It also was scary because the first video was about gun rights! Turned out he had lots of great points and a few videos later he got a sub and a few videos later he got the bell. This channel has really helped me rest my mind to my on own"assumptions". I don't always agree but I always appreciate and love the perspective. Enjoy your stay!!!

      Yet I have yet to see or hear where the origins of the term 'woke'! I'm a History buff, a sign placed on the body of John Bailey, a lynched black man reading “ Please Do Not Wake Him ”. The banality of Evil ignorance of the American people by omission continues, that is our Shame. My Dad was raised with white supremicist idealogy, it stopped with me, 1960s.

      I never heard of it until I moved to Waco in my 20's. Heard of the Tulsa massacre last year. I'm now 54.

      I heard of Juneteenth back in the early 80s from a couple I worked for that were from Texas and had moved here to southeastern Okla to run a small franchise 5 & 10 cent store. I learned about the Tulsa race riots, here in my own state, much later, from the book "A Fire in Beulah", by Rilla Askew, an Oklahoma author who is the sister of a friend of mine. What a horrible atrocity and major setback to black advancement that was.

    Can we, I don't know, make it a cultural holiday? Presents? Apple pie? I don't know. Like, this seems like a big damn deal and worth celebrating or observing or something.

    I didn't know Juneteenth existed. I'd write a letter to my high school, and request this get added to the curriculum (or perhaps emphasized). But unless I included a *very* large sum of money with the letter my request would be ignored. This was the kind of school that seriously considered axing the Performing Arts Dept, but was willing to buy new football equipment every year.
    Which shows what my childhood community valued. Nothing farther from them than the end of their nose.

    It's the same thing that Reagan did on his first Presidential Campaign....after winning the Republican his bid in NY...It was the FIRST STOP... basically saying "We got you" in an area that was considered as one the headquarters for the KKK.

    As a Scottish lass, I have to thank you for putting a lot of this in context. tbf we don't even teach Black History here still. I'm starting to think that wasn't an oversight but a deliberate choice to encourage the feeling of white superiority, that doesn't actually exist in the first place.

    I like that you use the term “whitewash” in describing history teachings - or lack thereof. The Tulsa Massacre of 1921 is a good example of whitewashing. Myself, I never heard a word about it until I did my own research. And I have family in Tulsa.
    Why is this story not widely known? Why do none of my white friends know what I’m even talking about when I mention 1921 Tulsa - or Greenwood - or even know that there was such a thing as “Black Wall Street”??

    Awesome speech my Brother. I've learned a lot just researching about Juneteenth 2021 & how sickened I am about the Greenwood District Massacre in Tulsa, OK of 1921. I'm really pissed at how schools in both Colorado (were I was born & live now) and New Mexico (of which I've spent 17+ yr's of my life) - - taught us SO LITTLE about these 2 all-important pieces of history. I'm sorry I hadn't seen this as it was posted a year ago. Keep spreading the word, whatever word that opens people's hearts & minds to truth, not what we're all SPOON-FED.     I grew up in the midwest and never heard of it. Then I moved to the south for a bit. Heard of it, but thought it was a Texas thing. Now on the west coast, before this year it wasn't a widely recognized holiday. Then again, the great migration is not a widely recognized phenomenon either even though it explains why Oakland is about 1/4 black.
