    As a veteran my biggest issue with police conduct is that the ROE oversees in a foreign country with hostiles everywhere, is a higher standard than against our own citizens and the police are crying about people being mad. It's fucking disgusting that our citizens are being treated worse than a man in Afghanistan carrying a weapon in the open.

      I had more restrictive ROE as a contractor. As a totally private contractor.

      @@BeauoftheFifthColumn And to whomever reads these words. I am wanting to know why the hell our government? DOD? has sent many troops back to "the Middle East".
      I know I'm off topic here, pardon me for that. But... always the but, right. 😏
      I have been gleaning from all of my Intel Folk about this since learning that 550+ of my son in law's unit have been redeployed and coming up with nada.
      It just feels like DOD is doing something when we are all laser focused on other things and for my son in law, who's already done 3 tours in the "sandboxes" and definitely has untreated PTSD, I'm worried and angry.
      I think it's okay for me to disclose the name of his unit if that helps.
      And thank you Beau for teaching me about the 11 Bravo and Oakleys! 😏
      So, he is in the Iowa National Guard, but this is his 'regular' unit info:
      HHC 1-133 Infantry; "Ironman Battalion".
      Bless you all and thank you for any info you can give me!
      p.s. Tasers would be lethal for someone like me and most of my family, with our silly cardio arrythmias! 😏

      Ultimately we need to retrain our police forces from the ground up. Have clear ROE. Have clear and uniform non local investigation of police violence in cases that end in violence. We even need to really think about what they should be enforcing and if we need specialized agencies for dealing with say the mentally disabled that we force them to police without proper training.
      The problem with Atlanta is that under today's standards of policing that was a justified shooting. I'm really having to examine my beliefs and biases on this one.

    • @jasongent4088
      @jasongent4088 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NicoVeenkamp I know that Americans don't have a monopoly on racism, but it sure as hell seems like we have the market pretty well cornered lately.
      I understand that human beings are inherently skeptical and/or afraid of things that are different; I think a good deal of it is the way that we've evolved over the generations, but...racism is not an instinct or natural state, it's a learned behavior. And, as is the case with all learned behavior, in order to learn something, it has to be taught to you. That's the issue that I really struggle with the most, I think. Not only are people still learning the behaviors of prejudice and racism, there are still people who believe in them so much that they're teaching those tenets to their children and keeping them going.
      It has never been a reasonable, acceptable or excusable trait, but I can at least understand (understanding does NOT equate to acceptance or agreement) why it used to be so much more prevalent. What I can't understand is why people are still teaching their children this nonsense, and why their children are still accepting it. We live in the information age. We literally have the entire cumulative knowledge of everyone who has ever lived on a tiny computer in our pockets, with the answers to any and all questions that we could ever have constantly at our fingertips; choosing to remain willfully ignorant is simply ridiculous at this point.
      There is a huge difference between stupidity and ignorance. Some people, despite genuinely trying, are simply unable to learn certain things, or unable to retain the information that they have learned for any significant period of time. I understand that, and would never fault them for it. Some people, though, are capable of learning and just don't want, or feel a need, to do so. I just cannot respect (or even understand, frankly) someone who makes the choice to be willfully ignorant.

    • @jasongent4088
      @jasongent4088 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@bigtrajik1 Do you know what a fact is? I mean *really* know?
      I encourage you to read the definition. According to the dictionary, a fact is "something that is known or proved to be true," or "a piece of information that is used as evidence in a report or article."
      By definition, a fact is simply something that is demonstrably true.
      You have every right to dislike the facts, and I would stand up and fight for your right to believe what you do just as hard as I would fight for my own rights. I don't have to agree with your opinion in order to acknowledge and respect your right to have it.
      You can pick and choose which facts you like, or which ones you care to research or share. What you *cannot* choose is which facts are true.
      Water is wet. That's a fact. You can decide whether you like that quality of water or not, and you can choose whether or not you want to tell people about it...but what you can't do is disagree with it. If you say that water is dry, it doesn't make my statement of fact any less true; it just makes you an idiot.
      That may seem like an infantile or puerile example, but under the circumstances a little condescension seemed warranted.
      Now, with that said...I would absolutely love for you to watch the video again and tell me which one(s) of the facts are untrue.
      Please do so. But do so expecting a well thought out rebuttal. =D

      @The Last_Saint, I watched every available video on this yesterday and I found so many things wrong my brain spun out of control. Yes, to the first officer being polite and helpful. Yes to 'Rambo' being a total asshole with zero regard to the bystanders. This mess lasted for over an hour! So, being who I am, I look at it with both a legal and medical approach. After Rambo made Mr. Brooks blow into the field breathalyzer, not ONCE did he tell Mr. Brooks the results. We got them only because of his body cam!
      Nope, Rambo just has to go for the cuffs. After the POC officer had things under control and Mr. Brooks just wanted to lock his vehicle and walk to wherever he was staying.
      Nope, Rambo gets off 3 shots and THEN... polices his metal! I'll take skewing a crime scene for a dollar.
      I could go on, I won't. But... the last one I saw was the arrival of 'Rambo's supervisor? or whoever he was and the conversation went like this:
      'Rambo': How's the guy doing?
      Supervisor: He didn't make it.
      'Rambo: Oh, am I good?

    This reaffirms my belief that Sociology should be taught in middle-high School. Not just college. There is so much to be learned from statistics, bias, and culture that History and Psychology alone can not teach. At the very least it would give people a greater understanding of statistical applications and the difference between raw data and surveys. If it could go further to teach about unconscious bias and a greater awareness of and appreciate for societal differences, even better. Thank you Beau, for taking a delicate subject and tackling it with a straight forward, articulate, well thought out discussion. As always! (Choose your own adventure...-grin-)

      -That whole long comment was a straw man. No one ever said we weren’t one species. They clearly stated that we can be divided into taxonomic groups called races. Race is a valid concept scientifically because of the predictions we can make from it. This is especially important in the medical field when administering medicines or as correction factors in things like the pft test.
      -A common phrase is humans were a species that became a subspecies on its way back to a species. A subspecies is a species that can breed but doesn’t due to geographical location, which due to evolution and different selective pressures in said environment, creates different phenotypic features and genetics, biology etc. Humans meet that criteria. Not to mention the fact that whites and Asians have around 4% Neanderthal admixture and Africans do not.
      -There is more genetic variation within humans than between humans and chimps. Doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have separate taxonomic categories that separate chimps and humans. Don’t believe everything your professors told you. Universities have been taken over by far leftist idealogy.

      Love ourselves and our fellow humans while ignoring obvious truths about group differences is a recipe for disaster. Is that not a common complaint about Africa? That after colonization Europeans drew the lines of the new nations to be multi cultural and multi ethnic, and that is partly the cause of all the instability? If you like diversity then you can’t put diverse groups together under one nation, at least not in mass. We need a place to call our own, without pressure from other groups.

      @Maureen Bregazzi One of the first countries, if not the first, to make slavery illegal was Britain. Now, this is not to say that it stopped because of this, but it does say that the UK recognized the error in thinking that the solution to economic issues lay in human labor like this. It could be too that the actions of the UK paved the way for the US changes to follow years later. Even in those day, the UK was a more enlightened country in that regard.
      This happened on August 1, 1833. This day ("Emancipation Day") was celebrated as a holiday by people of color, slave and free, in the U.S. (and elsewhere) for years after that. The sad part is, this history is lost to generations since education doesn''t provide a history this detailed in the average education.
      And because slavery was illegal in the UK, Canada became the destination for run-away slaves who found welcome there. In some of the black newspapers of the day, there are mentions of those who had recently crossed into Canada where stepping on that soil freed them. I loved reading some of these editorials that said things like "Mr. X sends his regards to his former owners Mr. and Mrs. Y, and wants them to know he's arrived in freedom safe and sound." (Most of the escapees settled in Sandwich.)

He is further making suggestions in the last part, that if followed can lead to injury or death. Beau and you and me may not like that, but system is currently set as it is, "When do we want change, now!" is patently impossible, and it's questionable how much of the change is actually feasible. The nature of the policing is that you cannot really reduce the relatively wide scope of police's discretion, what you can do is make the police more accountable - as in, if police officer makes judgement call that is patently wrong even if he may have thought it was justified at the time, he goes to jail. The extent of that should be that cases similar to following should end in conviction:
      Philando Castile, Daniel Shaver, Tony Timpa
      I am not listing cases like George Floyd or Botham Jean, as I think first case is likely to end up in conviction with existing rules(if it doesn't, it should be added to the list), and second case was convicted, although I would be for update of the rules so that Botham Jean murderer would receive harsher sentence.
      Tamir Rice case, although very disturbing and tragic, I am not so sure about, too many people made too many mistakes, starting with the people that enabled boy access to realistic weapon replica, when the boy was at least in hindsight not mature enough to understand consequences of bringing realistically looking gun out and pointing it on people.
      Mr Brooks case does not belong on the list that should be prosecuted in my view.

      i disliked it but not because of racism. because i think he uses faulty logic regarding how "cases cleared" is the better way to judge effectiveness. it makes multiple critically poor leaps in logic to my understanding.
      .
      like: "only 13% burglaries solved" seems ineffective. but its not uncommon to see 1 burglar who was charged with 8 burglaries (not all that they committed mind you, just proven or witnessed) , one man was linked to 52. if 13 people were caught, but its not uncommon for people to be charged robbing 8 places each, that means 13 burglars caught could mean you've caught ALL the burglars (13*8=104), just not linked them to the instances of burglary.
      .
      and on top of that, it also sets a ridiculous standard by assuming that the other 87% of burglaries were both ABLE to be solved to begin with (enough evidence left at scene).
      .
      this isnt to say i dislike this channel because i think this is the first thing ive had an issue with, and im not some purist who has to agree with everything i see on a channel or cancel it, just really think there is more conversation to be had about effectiveness

    • @kapitankapital6580
      @kapitankapital6580 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Not really. The example I like to give is traffic lights. You're driving along the street at night, and you come to a red light. You look around and don't see anybody crossing or any cars coming, so you drive through it. You've just committed a victimless crime. Were you right to do so?
      Let's go through that same scenario, you came to the lights, checked, and drove through. However this time a young man dressed in dark clothing was crossing the road. Maybe you're tired and you didn't spot him. Maybe he came from around a corner and started walking out. Point is you didn't see him, and you drove through the red light and killed him. Exact same actions, but this time there is a victim. Were you right to do this?
      The point of punishing people who break the law is to discourage particular types of behaviour which we don't want people to do. Just because you don't see the victim doesn't mean there isn't one, or that there might not be one. That doesn't mean that there aren't bad laws or that people should be punished in the way they are currently in every case, but it does mean that we shouldn't condemn every time the state punishes people for "victimless crimes".

      @kapitankapital6580 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Maybe, some of them, just a few maybe if that but *some* will turn over a new leaf. But if you come you better come prepared, the instant it takes more than a few seconds to find something they'll write you off and dismiss what you're saying because if you can't produce your "evidence" then it must be a lie (in their mind at least) and they aren't going to stand around and wait for you all day; therefore have whatever information you need right there on hand ready to produce (not that they'll read it if it requires reading, because they don't actually care about the evidence or truth of the matter, they start out with the position that they're always correct no matter what - something which you will be accused of by the way so be ready for that even if you're using evidence and all they have is an opinion, no one could ever accuse them of being consistent or nonhypocritical).

      Stephanie Wilson great point... but the system is built to break us down... I’m sure you know that too. And it works. It gets tiring... It’s everywhere. I can’t even play softball without someone saying something stupid... or coach my sons baseball team... I pick and choose my spots but it’s easier just to say “they don’t understand”...
      But usually it’s not only race it’s about everything... especially the class war. I’m starting to really understand my privilege and I’m in my 40’s because even what I’m saying is based on my privilege...My wife always is asking to move, I live in Florida, but I always say... it’s good we live here because people around us will hear us out... but sometimes it’s like... we are sick of hearing the nonsense... and even saying “they don’t understand” makes me cringe because it’s not like have moral authority... I feel like an elitist...
      I wish Beau could make a video about how the system is built to tire people out... the overwhelming divide among all groups too... It’s not only race... it’s indoctrination into every group to divide and conquer...
      Good day... and your right I need to flip it... It’s just that I only have so much energy...

    Love what you are doing with the channel! I would have liked for you to address the fact that the incident didn't even need to get to the point of the officer using the taser. In the 1st 5 minutes of the video, the suspect offered to walk home, as an option. The cops knew he was drunk and continued to escalate the situation. Heck, since his sister was just down the street, they could have called her to come get him, or just take him there themselves. They stated, they were there to "make sure he was ok". Dropping him off would've been the safest thing for him. They already had his info (car and plate). They could have addressed ticketing, DUI actions, etc...when he sobered up.

    I learned how to solve equations in school, but I learned how to be a decent human being rather late in life. Public schooling is designed to churn out a docile working class, not to build strong character and resilient minds. If you want the next generation to truly succeed, I suggest they learn the lessons taught in support groups of all kinds, good treatment programs, the life stories told by the least among us. Take your children to protests, get them connected to nature, show them the world outside of a classroom.

      In Ontario, Canada they start teaching things like honour, integrity, compassion, patience, equality and critical thinking in elementary school. Yes, there are still problems because humans are not perfect, but at least the kids are given a good foundation to build on.

    I have been reexamining my bias. It is a soul searching thing and feels good. I do not consider myself a racist. Don't care about skin color. But in examining bias I find need of improvement. If you are living you should be open to change. Discussion and self reflection are the way we change the world.

      I think it's a lot deeper than many of us realize. I was thinking about it the other day. Seriously - what do you say about an evil man? "He has a dark side." What do you say about a good man? "He has a light around him." Dark is bad, light is good. It's everywhere. If we're really going to understand racism, we have to understand this. It is an innate part of our culture.
      But the beauty of it is, once we know and understand, we can purposely think differently.

      @@sylverkat9488 why do we ascribe this to humans? We could shift the paradigm to darkness as calm, quiet, a time for reflection and dream. With light comes noise, movement and frenetic activity. I get your point... would rather not make a blanket statement of light/dark as good/evil. Thanks

      It’s the biases deep down that can be hard to find let alone unpack. I’m 46 and more and more go back to my childhood where my father would casually comment on aboriginals being lazy, destroying things they were given etc. never ever using racist terms or anything overt and being a “good Christian” but I found myself starting to think and parrot those falsities even though I didn’t really know any aboriginal people or unbiased history.

    Howdy there Beau I'm going to put this out, if a person broke into your house and had a weapon and they are running away and you shoot them in the back twice you are found guilty of murder because there was no reasonable reason to believe that he was going to attack you because he was running away and you shot him in the back the same should be true for our trained officers if you see it in a different light that is your bias end of discussion. Just a truth.
