As I remember it, this was a very strange affair. He was allegedly hired by the Italians to assassinate the king but had also been an agent for what would eventually become MI5. He claimed he deliberately foiled his own attempt.
I really have one question about this film having seen it a few times, I am quite sure that when discussing the royal visit they speak of a parade of the "Yorkshire Hussars" when the soldiers shown in the film are at least from what I can make out from the Royal Horse Artillery (I might be wrong about the specific unit, but the soldiers in the film are without a doubt Horse Artillery), I find this to be an odd decision on the writers part.
