The 'Mats were THEEE rock-and-roll band of my generation. There isn't a time that I play "Tim" when I don't cry a bit. I was at Paul's bachelor party in Ann Arbor. The Young Fresh Fellows played. A phenomenal night.
I saw the Replacements in Providence RI with Young Fresh Fellows. Had a conversation with Paul and Tommy backstage, Tommy thought I was someone else he didn’t like and it started an argument, it was funny trying to to prove I wasn’t who he thought I was. Paul recognizes me but Tommy wasn’t having it. Bobby thought it was funny. Everyone seemed pretty well primed, if you know what I mean. Young Fresh Fellows were great and the The Mats followed for a short but delirious set and asked the Young Fresh Fellows to come up and finish the set, which they did. Good times.
Bob Mehr’s authorized biography of The Replacements is one of the greatest books I’ve ever read about a band. It’s called Trouble Boys. He’s also co-producing all of these great box sets and special releases for the band too along with Jason Jones at Rhino. The new Pleased To Meet Me outtakes Lp is great too.
Agree…that’s easily one of the best books I’ve ever read. Both hilarious and sad. The final page of the ASD tour where Paul and Tommy go their separate ways was so well written.

Great clip. Favourite song - Someone take the wheel. And much as I love the 2 Slim albums his live one (bootleg?) 'Thank you dancers' is the one I play the most. He makes the obscenely out of tune guitar on 'Rockin here tonight'' enjoyable.

Great get with Baird, Otis. One of my heros growing up. Also kudos on the composition, lighting, framing etc.. on all your vids. They're impressive. Your attention to detail and care shows. You have a cinematic eye for the timeless. Always a pleasure to watch.
I got turned onto the 'Mats in '84, hearing "I Will Dare" on our local college station. They came to Seattle in '85 and played at Astor Park (a bar) exactly one month before my 21st birthday. I was pretty pissed I could not see them! It's funny Dan mentioned the bit about guitar players - I was "that guy!" In early '87 after hearing that Bob had been let go I was drunk AF, called Information in Minneapolis and asked for Paul Westerberg's number. I was going to tell him that I was the guitarist they needed to fill Bob's shoes. Whoever answered the phone that night (well, early morning MPLS time!) was probably really pissed and I sincerely apologize to that Paul, whoever you were. In retrospect, it was probably for the best because I got sober a couple years later and I'm not sure my life would have taken the same path if I had miraculously sweet-talked Paul into hiring me as the lead guitarist in The Replacements. My favorite 'Mats song varies with my mood, but it's usually "Left of the Dial." Usually.
My Favorite Replacements song…..tough call, but Pleased to Meet Me was life changing at the time. I worked at a Mom and Pop record store that would get in demo lps. I had been hired as the ‘metal expert’ but as soon as I started working there, I listened to anything but. I was so sick of the syrup production cliches that L.A was pumping out and all of a sudden I heard Rock n’ Roll coming out of the speakers in a pure form. That’s is undeniable, that is The Replacements!
Have you heard Left Lane Cruiser? They kind of fit this type of band and are on the Black Keys studio playing hillbilly bluegrass country rock. I think they are now 2 maybe now 3 members. They are from Fort Wayne Indiana. On another note I did forget that Unsatisfied was done by the replacements may favoriet and only song I know. I heard that song on the radio in the 1990's on an 1980's to now station probably now a 2000's to now station as it was changing to 1990's to now when living in Madison area, Middleton (Middleton that will be a suburb part of City of Madison still with own post station in 2024) in 2000 before I moved. The Album it is from Let It Be almost got a lawsuit from Beatles or EMI but then when the head of EMI or the remaining Beatles at the time heard the album and how good it was, the lawsuit was dropped, this makes me think it was the Beatles.
Favorite Mats song? Ah. sh1t... they're all great: Answering Machine, Unsatisfied, Here Comes a Regular, Bastards of Young, Left of the Dial, Alex Chilton, Never Mind, Shooting Dirty Pool, Portland, Within Your Reach, Color Me Impressed, Skyway, Sadly Beautiful, The Ledge, Someone Take the Wheel, They're Blind, Sixteen Blue... No Mats' fan could pick just one.
saw Slim twice with the "...mats" always a great guitarist and great onstage, good addition to them as they gained above ground success,Westerberg really was way better with them...Damm love "Alex Chilton" plus'Waitress in The Sky" even though it is a misogynist hoot) but the early stuff was fun with Bob unless it was a bad nite...
I wouldn't say "Waitress" was misogynistic. It was inspired by Westerberg's sister who was a flight attendant for many yrs. His sister told him many stories about all the A holes she had to deal with every day....
"there's something about the everyman singing that is always touching.." nicely spoken, Dan! Otis your channel is TERRIFIC.. thank you for sharing it all w/ us.. 2 fave Mats' #'s for me: Gary's got a Boner + Alex Chilton 🤩

I was so sick of the syrup production cliches that L.A was pumping out and all of a sudden I heard Rock n’ Roll coming out of the speakers in a pure form. That’s is undeniable, that is The Replacements!
I Don't Know
Have you heard Left Lane Cruiser?
The Replacements were the best. Fave track is hard to pick, but I'd have to say Answering Machine.

Sixteen Blue
saw Slim twice with the "...mats" always a great guitarist and great onstage, good addition to them as they gained above ground success,Westerberg really was way better with them...Damm
love "Alex Chilton" plus'Waitress in The Sky" even though it is a misogynist hoot) but the early stuff was fun with Bob unless it was a bad nite...
I wouldn't say "Waitress" was misogynistic. It was inspired by Westerberg's sister who was a flight attendant for many yrs. His sister told him many stories about all the A holes she had to deal with every day....
That's a hard choice to make, but I'll go with Alex Chilton and Here Comes a Regular. So many great tunes though.
"there's something about the everyman singing that is always touching.." nicely spoken, Dan!
Otis your channel is TERRIFIC.. thank you for sharing it all w/ us..
