Big Tom Petty fan here. We were watching the NY Mets on TV and there was a rain delay in the game. Turned on New York’s best radio rock station at the time, WNEW, just in time to hear the DJ say “…so I’ll take the first three callers for tickets”. Picked up the phone on the arm of the couch and dialed. The guy who picked up said “you’re caller number three. You’re a winner”. I had to ask what I had won, and it was tickets for the tour Dan’s talking about here. They called it the Rock and Roll Caravan tour, 1987 in Madison Square Garden, 7th row center. Great show. We were dancing in the aisle. When Tom passed it was like losing a good friend. Thanks for the good memory Otis and Dan.

I was driving home from work when I heard Tom Petty passed away and I cried all the way home. Normally, I can hold it together, but Tom was dear to my heart. I sure miss him.
I saw Tom play 'Keep Your hands To Yourself', I saw Dan play 'American Girl'. I've been lucky. Georgia Satellites were a great live band, and 'In The land of Salvation & Sin' is up there with Wildflowers.
I saw TomPetty and the Heartbreakers 40 th anniversary tour. Center stage row 5. Both shows in StLouis and KC. The best rock in roll band ever .❤️TomPetty his music plays every day every where from the shop radio to in the grocery store his music lives. RIP TomPetty greatest ever

He just grinned as he was tuning, and said "You notice there isn't a set list up here". Talked to him a little after the show, and still regret not thinking to get the show poster signed.
Great stories,so believable Dan Baird.I'm the ghostwriter from 1987 who also wanted Roy Orbison's comeback.Trav Wilburys sealed the deal.I ghosted a ton of songs to Orby,Petty,George...whole albums,since I loved those guys and grew up listening to them,part of my soul.Even one for McGuinn,called Back from Rio. Jealousy of their great talents was a big motivator for me.
My sister worked for Petty a couple of times doing logistics and said that he was as well read and intelligent as anyone she had ever met, and she dated scientists.

Thank you Otis & Dan. I loved the toasted smile. I have 1 huge regret in my life. I never got to see Tom & the Heartbreakers play. When I first fell in love with them my mom wouldn’t allow me to go to concerts. Then I was taking care of my Grandma . Then I had kids no money for concerts. Once my kids got older I took care of my mom for 20 years. My mom passed away Feb of 2017. Then Tom passed in Oct. the worse year of my life. My time had run out to ever see them.
Very similar reasons why I never saw them in person, though they were always my favourite. I’m comforted by all the TH-cam concert videos. I tell myself it’s just like being there, even though I know it’s not. But you can watch them over and over - all different songs and time periods - and it’s sort of like having a front row seat each time! I just love Tom’s music and wish he was still here.
Being an 11 year old kid & seein' on my Mom & Dad's television set a Rock Band jammin' on a flatbed truck threw my developing Mind into a tornado of lighting, thunder, & electric guitar.

I saw the Satellites open for David Bowie in Toronto in 1987. (Glass Spider tour.) To be honest, I had never had of the band. Well - colour me impressed, LOVED that rock a billy / driv'en sound. When out after my next payday and got the album. "That well toasted smile"... well now, don't that paint a picture of many a summer camping trip from back in the day. Funny - booze brings out the fighter in many, weed just mellows... you don't see fist fights among people burning herb.

Great story, greater loss. I rarely have experienced en masse grief but you know it when it happens. My first was Elvis.....a strange experience as a young kid, then John, then George(took that one hard).... but then losing Prince and Tom was such a bitter pill. Especially Tom. He sat in that rarified air, and he seemed like an older brother showing me the way as I was growing up. He he was always there despite all the noise. His songs were solid, no matter the decade. WHen I worked at the record store in my teens, my musical taste were transforming at an unbelievable clip, but like an anchor I listened to his songs without prejudice as I knew they were solid in the tradition in great song writing.To hear that he had the Replacements on tour with him, showed me that he was listening also. He was one of us, he was just dialed into the zeitgeist.
Dan is so cool without trying. Love ALL of his stories & the way he tells them. Tom Petty was another of my Prine-like heroes. Ya know… I heard one time he was in The Traveling Wilburys. Can you believe that? More Mike Baird, please! Thanks, Otis.

Thank you Otis for another great video! I saw Tom Petty's first tour in Seattle and my youngest son Geoff ( guitar/bass in my band) saw his last show in Seattle. We have both bonded over our unique Petty experiences and it has made our band(MirrorImage) so much better for it.
Thinking back to the '80s and Georgia Satellites self titled debut. I remember thinking that this band just saved rock and roll. That is who Dan Baird is to me. Special place! Hi Otis, saw Petty and Dylan at the Pacific Amphitheatre. Bob famously "forgot how to sing". I believe it. I stared at Campbell's blonde Tele. Made the jump from bass/singer to guitar/singer. I was 15 in 1985. Worked all summer and couldn't afford a Fender. Big lessons.
Truly talented people…when they pass on way too early.. get “sainted” by those who knew them… I believe that in the case of Tom Petty,it’s altogether warranted… I love everything that he wrote,played and stood for.. RIP,Tom Petty..❤️
I always have to tell this story. I’d be telling it if they never had a hit. My gf, now wife, and I saw The Satellites (no Georgia yet) on a Tuesday night at the Moonshadow Saloon in 1982. Most of the night there were only four people there. They played their asses for four sets as if they were playing for 40,000!! It was one of the greatest rock and roll experiences of my life. I told the story a million times and then they blew up with their hit and I was proud as hell of them
I love the comparison with Mark Twain, all the more because Tom wrote the lyric (damn I forgot the song title), "gonna impress all the women/pretend I'm Samuel Clemens/wearing suckers and white linen" ... great interview, hearing a conversation touching on his passing always painful for us all of course. Down South. I live and grew up not far from where Mike went to high school. They nailed the culture. Dark past, keep your mouth shut, all documents remain sealed, payoffs. I’m from Jacksonville Florida and of course Lynyrd Skynard are Gods but so me people don’t know that Mike went to high school here so did Gram Parsons. I seriously might consider trying to get funding to build statues of these gentlemen they are masters. The community hardly knows. They keep talking down historical monuments which I don’t believe in. You fight free speech with better speech and ideas. I think I just had some enlightened wisdom. I’m not financially rich but I know plenty of multi millionaire who love tax right offs and music and this city. I’m gonna see what I can do.
Speaking of toasted,when I saw,the Satellites,with the Scorchers,the Dude that played Oliver from the Brady bunch,was standing next to me,I got him blasted,and he rocked out with an illegal smile....good times.

Was Lucky enough to see Tom Petty live. First show was in Lexington Kentucky Jackson Brown opened still my all time favorite concert. Wish I could have seen The Georgia Satellites open for Tom sounds like a hell of a show. Thank you for sharing these great stories Otis!
I saw him several times. I always looked forward to the Heartbreakers covers of classic rock songs. One year at Verizon (formerly Deer Creek) in Noblesville, it rained so hard the crowd ended up soaked to the skin. I think Tom felt sorry for us and ended the concert a little early.
I saw this 1987 tour with Del Fuegos at Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles. Heaven. Then I saw Tom/Heartbreakers with Jackson Browne opening at a tennis arena in Indian Wells CA in 2006. Stevie Nicks popped out to sing lead on “American Girl” and the “Stop Dragging My Heart Around” duet. People trickled in during Jackson’s set. Many missed him completely.

Dan Baird is so cool. I saw the Satellites open for Bob Seger, then again at the last show of the Lynyrd Skynyrd reunion tour. Then I saw him play with Elizabeth Cook at Eddies Attic a few years ago.
I was put on fentanyl patches for a legitimate injury and that shit grabs a hold of you with a devil's grip. No matter the character, strength, or intellect of the host, it will possess you and affect your decision making. I turned blue on two occasions before I said 'no mas' and cold turkeyed it. It took a lot from me. But I kept my life. Prince and Tom Petty, as well as both being absolutely worthy of the entirely overused term 'Musical Genius ', were also two of the last people you, if you had any insight into the men themselves, would ever expect to be drug casualties. Users, perhaps, (sorry, Tom❤️), but never would you have expected that end for either man. And we thought Heroin was dangerous.

Was Lucky enough to see Tom Petty live. First show was in Lexington Kentucky Jackson Brown opened still my all time favorite concert. Wish I could have seen The Georgia Satellites open for Tom sounds like a hell of a show. Thank you for sharing these great stories Otis!

I saw him several times. I always looked forward to the Heartbreakers covers of classic rock songs. One year at Verizon (formerly Deer Creek) in Noblesville, it rained so hard the crowd ended up soaked to the skin. I think Tom felt sorry for us and ended the concert a little early.
Saw that tour at Madison Square Garden. Del Fuegos, Georgia Satellites, then Petty.

I saw this 1987 tour with Del Fuegos at Universal Amphitheater in Los Angeles. Heaven. Then I saw Tom/Heartbreakers with Jackson Browne opening at a tennis arena in Indian Wells CA in 2006. Stevie Nicks popped out to sing lead on “American Girl” and the “Stop Dragging My Heart Around” duet. People trickled in during Jackson’s set. Many missed him completely.

Dan Baird is so cool. I saw the Satellites open for Bob Seger, then again at the last show of the Lynyrd Skynyrd reunion tour. Then I saw him play with Elizabeth Cook at Eddies Attic a few years ago.
