On a sidenote, Phil LOVES to shit on Maximilian all the time with zero reason but max like himself makes a ton of money directly from his viewers. Maximilian has sponsors of course but his viewers literally made the man and pay his bills. So at the end of the day it doesn't matter what your main source of revenue is coming from if you lr a content creator phil will hate you as long as you're more successful then him.
Also Max doesn't guilt trip anyone or put shit behind paywalls. It's fine to take donations but to refuse to take deals and leave that burden for the fans is shitty behavior.

I've been running a TH-cam channel consistently since about 2015, got monetized in Fall of 2020. My channel is still quite small by most standards (went from about 6.4k subs at the start of 2022 to 11.4k subs now). I did work hard (uploaded almost 700 videos and maybe 120 streams over the course of the year), but largely just grinded it out (my most viewed video has less than 23k views) and ended up with about 3 million views on the year. This all while still working a full-time job outside of YT and treating YT as my side job/hobby.
Without disclosing exact dollar figures, I absolutely do NOT buy this argument that you have to be one of the top dogs to make a living off ad revenue. You'd have to be a decent amount bigger than me, but I can absolutely see a day in the next couple years where I get there without a fluke video suddenly doubling my sub count in one day. Maybe it was easier before the adpocalypse, but I think a channel that has 20k-25k subs that uploads 2 videos a day of 10-12 minutes each could make a living off of just that money.
Big ups to you for your hard work building up your channel.
I like the way he acknowledges that surviving off of ads is impossible for content creators that have less than 1M consistent viewers, but argues that an acknowledgement you can take sponsorships to supplement pay and not entirely rely on viewership is a stance of privilege. And when I say I like it I mean it boils my blood.

If DSP’s whole “crowdfunding” thing worked like he claimed, we wouldn’t have tons of footage of him complaining about low tips and saying things like, “I can’t keep streaming if you don’t tip me.” The Scorn Scold wouldn’t exist for Sir Moist to react to.
TH-camr DankPods does what DSP claims he’s doing. He doesn’t put ads on his videos and he doesn’t do any sponsorships. He has a Patreon that he puts a ton of extra content on and you get access to everything for $1. He’s got higher tiers that grant nothing extra that you can pledge to if you want, but all of his extra videos are available for $1. He makes $36,000/month on Patreon. He doesn’t hide how much he makes. He is the perfect example of what DSP claims to do. At the end of a DankPods video, he’ll say, “I don’t put ads on my videos or do sponsorships. If you want to see more video, I’ve got exclusive ones on my Patreon. It’s only $1.” That’s it. He was a drum teacher before he made TH-cam his job.
DSP makes terrible content. They’re bad playthroughs if you want to enjoy the story because he rambles over it. They’re bad playthroughs if you want to see what the game is like because he doesn’t utilize game mechanics to their full potential and opts for cheesing. They’re bad walkthroughs because he doesn’t teach anything. They are only for people that want to watch a boring person play a game badly in a boring way. And he doesn’t even play for his own enjoyment because he’ll rage quit games or wage quit games. So he’s not making F tier content for the love of making F tier content. He’s making it so he has a reason to e-beg and he’s too lazy and incompetent to make edited content that people would enjoy on a level where he doesn’t need to rely on 5 people dropping $20+ a day. Like DankPods. Who makes $36,000/month making funny videos about cheap MP3 players.
