- Trying to keep up with my Yamaha R1
with a Pro Rider on an old Suzuki Bandit 1200.
Suzuki driver with amazing driving skills.
Remember:
"It's not the bike, it's the rider!"
I don't see anyone trying to keep up with anyone. I just see a spirited ride with a healthy distance being maintained between riders. Remember, every corner has a maximum speed, which differs from corner to corner. If the bike and rider are capable of that 'maximum speed', then there is no reason why an R1 or Bandit 1200 shouldn't be able to maintain the same pace. If anything, all this video shows me, is that people have bought into media brainwashing, that tries to get you to believe that newer is faster or better. Bikes were being built 20yrs ago that are still more than capable today.
I definitely don't see a pro rider.. Just a couple of guys enjoying some great roads.

Bandit 1200 owner for 23 years, The Bandit in no way shape or form has the frame/suspension/braking capabilities of modern sport bikes...not even close. Running a Bandit 1200 on par with a good rider on an R1 is reserved only for motorcycle gods, this guy has incredible skills.

The Bandit rider has great riding technique...very late apexes...as we all should be doing when riding on the street and especially so with blind(ish) curves.

Good comment! I was just thinking the same. Most riders treat the entrance like the apex and run wide on the exit as a result. Stay wide on the entrance ,identify your apex and you generally hit the exit on the gas!
He needs to get off the bike more. He wouldn't need to lean nearly as much if he'd get his center of gravity inside.
In the late seventies and eighties we rode superbikes like these guys on bikes that had no brakes no suspension either and frames that flexed and twisted whilst you rode them.
The corners were taken sliding the rear out as well as the tyres had very little grip compared to today.
And we hit over 200 kmh regularly on roads like this, they say if you survived the eighties you could ride and it's a true statement.
I once took an XS 1.1 through a road like this in the eighties at well over the ton and the headshake was something to see.
The bike weighed 320 kilograms from memory.
Now i ride a gsxr 1000r effortlessly it rides itself and makes poor riders look like pros to something goes wrong.

I was ridding bikes in the early 60s, with bending frames and sliding tyres, brakes were a wing and a prayer, came off once in the wet. We were the ton up boys of the day. Now people think you can buy skill, with the latest superbikes. I ride a scooter these days, still piss some people off LOL.

Suzuki bandit is oldschool, and this biker was one of the best rider's I've ever seen..... Whit no abs no upside down whit no injection and on and on.... I love Suzuki bandit and gsxr.

Great, i ride an 2001 Aprilia Falco no electronic, but much better performance than the Bandit. Hello you poor amateurs, no culture in Europe anymore, never greet again. I am alone riding in winter for 24 years escaping every accident.

Dass der Bandit Fahrer weiß was er tut sieht man schon allein daran, dass er kein Hangoff fahren- und die Linie in der Kurve nie nachkorrigieren muss. Pro oder nicht, der kann definitiv fahren. Das war wirklich toll anzusehen. 👍🏻

I ride an old Suzuki 600 Bandit (1995), but I am not a "pro" rider, just a 68 years old rider, still alive and still riding ! 😊😊😊

I think people are being rather harsh about this video. There's some spirited riding and competence on here and it doesn't look rehearsed as if the riders have learned every bend before recording it.
Bandits are real sleepers. Yes theyre heavy bikes. Ive owned an 03 and an 07. Just about 100hp at the top end but they are Inline-4's from the old gsxr 1100, with a useable amount torque down low all the way up the revs and theyre happy anywhere in between in any gear. The older 1200's were air/oil cooled and carburated. But with just a can and some sticky rubber you can tear up those canyon roads.
i owned a Yamaha Fazer 600 in 2003...that put out 95bhp...great bike and handled too
So happy to see for once a video of people riding correctly, not over extending to the other lane, keeping distances and actually having a "safe" fun ride even if you can clearly see that you guys are pushing. Would love to know where these roads are, looks like fun!
My First bike was a 1999 Suzuki Bandit 1200s …. Amazing bike with a lot of tourque ❤🎉
I had a 2003 Gen II Bandit 1200N (N equals NAKED baby!!!) Mine was all stock except I changed the jets in the carbs and cut the slide springs a bit to richen it up. Stock was too lean. Loved the pull of that original GSXR 1100 motor between 3000-5000rpm. Mine was Green in color too! Ran Michelin Pilot Road 2 tires when they were out at the time.
Good riding, showing some good sense whilst going fast 👍🏻 He was amazing on the big old Bandit, I love those old bikes 🙂
When tuned right, those old Bandits could run pretty damn good! I wish they still made them!
it's funny , so many people think that a fast sportsbike makes the rider become marc marquez or atleast valentino rossi , when irl most people cant handle a pure sportsbiek to the fullest,because that takes an insanly amount of practice on tracks - going fast in a straight line is not hard for anyone,leanangle,hitting apex,counterstering,brakepoints and so on takes time to learn - and to trust the wheels and bike

Yes. Restricted on paper. Unrestricted with dyno jet and muffler around 130hp.
@@andreastillman8016 Are you referring to rwhp? I've so far only encountered rwhp figures after mods.
The most that can be expected from the the 2" mod of the air box (you didn't mention, but you ll get nothing without it), and proper jetting and a non restrictive muffler - is up to 115rwhp. I've heard of over 120hp, but no proof.
96/98 crank to 115rwhp is A LOT, not touching the engine.
I don't have typical figures for full system mod.
Results vary greatly between individual mods. "Proxy dynoing " doesn't count, for that matter..
Had it as new 25 years ago. Think it was 117 hp at the wheel so probably around 130 on crank. Air box was done. The bike was fast given the numbers.
@@andreastillman8016 I believe you it was fast, they're plenty fast untouched. Particularly red light racing. I have an N (slight mod, apart) and an S (no engine mods yet, daily transport).
The suspension on that bandit looks toast fair play to the rider
Love it! The Bandit looked squirrely on hard braking but he managed to carry good enough speed-that Yam sounds great!

I loved my 1998 12er Bandit. Took a small amount of money to bring the weight a lot down, better Suspension and brakes and the HP about 130. In the 5. gear she went to 10000rpm. On streets like that she was a dream. Hold it even as I owned a GSX -R1000 (2of them), Aprilia Tuono, Triumph Speed Triple. Sold it as my last bike in 2011. Even today I miss her most of all my rides.

I had a Bandit 12 back in 1999 and once I had fitted Ohlins shock and fork springs it handled really well, it was no slouch either.

Man I would not want to flick a Bandit around like that. That is a big bike and by the front fork view, with soft suspension too.
At least not on that road parts with the guard rail that tears your head off on one side and no run off area on the other side hehe
Yes, Bandits have a very soft front end.

Soft front can be fixed. Did that on my bike which is not fast.
That pretty much aligns with my experience on public roads. My riding experience is pretty limited but I got talent and am an avid learner with good progression.
My bikes are an old 2003 Tuono and a pretty new 2020 Tracer 900. I’m able to keep up with the likes of an Aprilia RSV4 and 1290 Superduke. Only the most skilled riders overtake me on public roads (if they open up enough). So, a 120 hp is more than enough guys. Have fun!

About 5 yrs ago i bought a FZR 600 (was fairly old). My Uncle had a Bandit 1200 & wanted to swap as he wasn't a very experienced rider, and it frightened him every time he went out on it, (he wasn't very confident or very experienced) but he was convinced he was going to kill himself on it. Anyway, long story short. I swapped with him. I have been riding since i was 15 (on & off road) & am now 55, & i get it. That bike was TO FAST! I consider myself a good, experienced rider, don't get me wrong i loved it, but it was also terrifying. I swapped back after a week. I do believe that, that bike will take some ones life, one day! Unless riding slow 'n' safe, but it didn't like going slow. It wheelied in every gear (except 5th, without slipping the clutch). I wish i kept it now, thinking about it, coz the FZR 600 was lovely, but to small for me, size wise & power.
Those old 1200 air cooled Bandits were no joke. The only thing that would have improved them would’ve been one extra gear.

You are able to reproduct a high level ride and touch limits without mystakes on every motorcycle in few minutes, all day long on unknown roads, and almost unknown bikes, at least at start of a test.
Certain brands pay for that, also motorcycle press.

I ve tried many many bikes, i own a panigale 1299s nowadays and a ktm 1290adventure s.
Being on a supesport bike like an r1 doesnt always mean Is obviuos it Is going to be the fastest guy on the road.
Most people dont realise that pushing that hard a supesport bike it everthing but easy and requires a lot of skill and knowledge of the body position, leaning angle etc etc

Von Kürnberg nach Gersbach hoch ❤❤❤ da hab ich vor 15Jahren mit meiner 12er Kult auch schon ein paar Supersportler gejagt. Wobei das mit ner optimierten SV650N schon fast lustiger ist (weil Alusau und kein Eisenschwein).
Lieblingsstrecke, wenn auch schon viel passiert ist, da hoch😅

Du kannst doch überhaupt nicht mit richtigen Motorräder fahren. Für jemanden wie dich ist so eine alte Maschine mit Seele tödlich. Du fahrst damit an nächsten Baum und bist am Ende. Für dich wäre am besten eine 50er Vespa, aber mit ABS und Traktionskontrolle.

I'm just really impressed with the bandit, I've seen people ride them but I don't think I've ever seen them pushed like that. Too bad there wasn't footage to watch from both riders.
I own a Bandit 1997 and have done around 250.000 klm !! Is an extremely capable bike 🏍 😀 to embarras any modern superbike any place 😀 😉 any time!!!

I have a very good mate who is so fast on any bike. That he could easily put in much faster lap times whilst riding a 1990's 1200 Bandit shipping crate. Than a lot of allegedly talented much younger guys could equal on a 2024 R1 or Fireblade etc.
To prove that statment, he borrowed my 2000 1200 Bandit at extremely short notice one Sunday morning when his 2015 Kawasaki ZX10R blew a fork seal prior to a trip to a race meeting.
He set off with several other mates who intended to take advantage of his enforced "handicap" in the form of my ancient & allegedly lard @$$/under powered 1200 Bandit.
However, what actually panned out is still talked about nearly 10yrs later.
As the old saying goes......."It ain't what you ride. It's the way you can ride it!".......
Cos he still kicked @ss against their far superior modern super bikes? 😎
Every average rider can be fast on a straight line. Only in the bendies the real skills start to count.

I have B12 mkI and zx12r. I bought Ninja not to be faster, but just because it was for sale and I wanted second bike 😊 I ride none of those two to their limits not even close... but even I can clearly feel that there is simply no field where B12 could ever beat Ninja other then by rider skill. With R1 the gap must be even bigger.
Looks like a fun stretch of twisties. Definitely some skilled riding. Notice the minimal body position usage for the guy riding the Bandit? 🤨
Both riders would have been hard pressed to keep up with me on my 1968 Norton P11A back in the day. I regularly ground the foot pegs (thank God they were folding!) on roads like that even with drum brakes that faded and the less grippy tires of the era.

Bandits have large bicycle steering allowing good leverage in twisty relative slow corners, R1 is made for faster cornering

It is a very twistie road, that is the only reason. The R1 driver cannot use the whole power band. Suzuki driver is a very good driver.
Vater Düsen/Luftfilter/Zündung Kit, BOS Auspuff, Wilbers Federbein mit 5 mm mehr Länge, Gabeluftpolster -15 mm, Lucas Sintermetall Bremsbeläge, 19'er Radialpumpe an 6-Kolbenzange und CRA3. Mehr braucht es an einer Kult für die Landstraße nicht🤩
I had a nice 12 with uprated suspension, race system etc. Yes you could play with the faster bikes, if you were brave enough to hold onto it.
That armco barrier is lethal for bikers i would not like to slide off . choose another road to play on !

the gen 2 Bandit 1250s is better yet..fuel injected..half fared.. some call them the baby Busa..down low torque is unreal.. eats rear tires for lunch..lol good vid..point made

Seems to me they kept up just fine, what did you expect the R1 to be riding within 5 feet of the Bandit or something? You don't ride the F'n close at high speed so he was keeping within a perfectly reasonable distance.
Note even the more experienced rider could be pushing the limits more and having less safety margins on the older bike. Even though he is likely the better rider with more skills.
The Bandit was the first street legal bike to dip into the 7s...

when i go to the track for conering practice you always see guys between 25 and 35 that have a 1000cc sports bike and think they are fast one time had a girl 20 years old on a 125cc she had to use 5 gears to ride the track we with bigger bikes could do it all in second and still those guys could not keep up with her
En este tipo de carreteras públicas es imposible sacarle todo el jugo a una R1 pero si a una Bandit. Es más, pocas personas personas son capaces de sacar todo el potencial de una R1 incluso en circuito. POR ESO, EN MUCHAS TANDAS ABIERTAS DE Circuitos a los que voy, veo como R1, Panigale, etc, hacen los mismos tiempos(o peor) que yo con mi CBR 600
