      Please don't use starvation as a resort to lose weight. You might want to do it for only a few days, but it can always develop into an eating disoder. If you feel the need to lose weight, please eat healthy and train instead. I don't want you or anyone to have to starve.

    • @austinveenstra7186
      @austinveenstra7186 8 ปีที่แล้ว +123

      that's the entire point of your body storing fat, to build up energy reserves for the times when you don't have enough glucose.

    • @LUVQX
      @LUVQX 8 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Yes but keep in mind that even if you theoretically survive months without food,it won't happen in reality because your immune system will shut down after 2-3 weeks so not really,they might survive longer but not that much longer

    • @mansandem
      @mansandem 8 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      Arantis Arantis I disagree. There are thousands, if not *millions* of people that water fast that don't have immune issues, even after a month. Like the original post said, that's there point of keeping excess fat stores on our body, so we could go a while without food. Of course the main reason most of us have excess fat stores, is because we just eat too much.

    As someone who has actually gone three weeks without eating I can say that you can feel you brain working differently and slower as it switches modes. However the time it takes for a body to burn up fat is certainly not as short as most think. I have found studies of people with feeding tubes removed in hospitals living for several months or even up to a year depending on body fat levels. The timeline most people think exist for the body reaching phase three is based on very old data or on developing countries where people have extremely low fat indexes to begin with. And before anyone thinks this will help with weight loss, I barely lost anything after three weeks, since the body slows down the metabolism to maximize surviveability. So unless you want to spend a couple months or more with ABSOLUTELY no food, which is really unpleasant, it's not worth it! Honestly, I'd rather go without sleep.

    Hey Hank, here's a related question about starvation:
    Is it true that starvation is painless?
    I heard from two doctors that a starved body has so few nutrients, the nervous system does not have the available chemicals to transmit pain near the end.

    • @mmmmmmolly
      @mmmmmmolly 9 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      well at the end maybe, but in the beginning it must be pretty painful...

    • @learnerlearns
      @learnerlearns 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Pepper Conchobhar Interesting dissertation... However, nothing I said related to "a certain type" of person, nor would I ever impose starvation upon anyone especially based on age or color. I merely asked a question, as Hank asks viewers to do. That question is about the unsubstantiated report I heard from two separate sources (doctors) who claim that toward the end of a starvation cycle, humans do not feel pain because their bodies lack certain chemicals that enable nerve function, and therefore cannot transmit pain. I am not advocating anything and I'm especially NOT advocating starvation whether self-imposed or otherwise. Therefore there is no need for justification and the commentary about erroneous beliefs about beating slaves or hurting babies are WAY off topic.

    • @Gtamaster34
      @Gtamaster34 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've found that initially you can really feel it (like the first couple days) but then you kind of forget you're hungry and you don't really notice it as much. I think it's more of a mental thing at first but then eventually you get over that and it isn't as bad, but of course over time you will feel the physical pain.

    1:00 this is why people think that eating only vegetables and proteins, and excluding glucose and carbs from their body is an effective form of weight loss, like the Atkins diet.
    STORY TIME! I was once for a brief period of time, anorexic. And curious as I was, I researched a lot about dieting and the macromolecules necessary for life (but mostly so I could avoid the ones I didn't prefer on a nutrition label). I know: t's funny. For an intelligent girl, I wasn't very smart. Obsessiveness and social disillusionment is more the explanation. I'd calculate how many calories came from fat and how many came from other macromolecules and tried to substitute to avoid as much fat as possible. This was later, though. At first, I just decided I wouldn't eat at all, having about two slices of bread a day. My body was in constant ketosis after a few days, and I lost weight rapidly.
    Continuing my restrictive-eating streak, my body then began to use up my own muscle protein to run, and I went from round and thin, to... just thin. I hadn't realized this until much later though. I resembled a very unnatural emaciated cousin to the human and relatives often asked me if I was sick. All of the muscle I had gained the year before during sports training was quickly depleted in my effort to be "beautiful." And the joke was on me, considering that muscle mass is need for fat burning. And because anorexia isn’t beautiful. After my recovery, I gained weight even more rapidly than I had lost it and it took about a year for my metabolism to straighten out and for my body to stop storing food in my thighs and stomach anxiously. Eventually my body fat distribution evened out and I could completely handle eating the way I did normally without blowing up. I had a wonderful body and didn’t even realize it thanks to my mental skew (which I’ve also recovered from if you’re wondering). My healthy body was shaved down to nothing, due to the three stages we’ve just learned about, and then blew up like a balloon when I began eating again. A year later, my body and mind recovered, and I don’t even consider myself the same person anymore. Yea, and a little lesson, don’t do stuff like that. Do things the natural, healthy way. Anything good requires an investment of effort first. Saving money requires investment. Getting good grades requires an investment of time and studying. And it’s always more rewarding when you do things the right way. Cool? Cool.

    • @averysollmann6498
      @averysollmann6498 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I was having to think of this because the whole ketosis thing was making e want to do a crash diet. But I know that's not going to bode well for me because I can't stand being hungry.

    • @nilaykumar6005
      @nilaykumar6005 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Obviously that is not recommended not just because of muscle loss but also because of the nutrient deficiency that results from a lack of a well balanced diet. However, couldn't the muscle loss have been avoided if you started eating again after the major fat stores were depleted? Just curious

    • @averysollmann6498

      The feelings of hunger and lack of concentration are caused by the body having to switch its main method of fueling itself and the brain - the same thing that occurs when people running a marathon hit 'the wall' (their glycogen stores have been depleted and their bodies are switching to burning fats). After a few days, generally 3-4, the body is using ketone bodies as its main fuel. As you are not having to switch between methods of fueling your body, you feel more clear-headed. The amount of energy you get from ketone bodies rises steadily from days 3-10, and after around day 10, it is at the maximum it will be. At this point, you feel normal because your body is fueling itself efficiently and has a plentiful supply of the fuel required to do so.

    As always, an excellent report Hank!
    One important question:
    I was told by a doctor that starvation is (relatively) painless, since the body does not have enough chemicals to produce synaptic impulses; therefore nerves do not deliver pain signals to the brain.
    In your research, have you found any information about that?
    IS starvation truly "painless?"

    At about 3 mins it sounds like your suggesting ketosis makes you depressed, lethargic, socially withdrawn with trouble concentrating etc. I'm not sure if thats what you meant but wanted to point out to anyone considering Low Carb/LCHF dieting or intermittent fasting that this isn't how most people would characterise their experience of ketosis. Perhaps it maybe true in the short term for people who's bodies aren't used to burning fat, but once your body is used to ketosis is actually a very pleasant mental state to be in. I would say so long as you stay well hydrated it gives you plenty of energy, clarity and focus, I actually feel more clear headed when in ketosis that when I'm using glycogen. I'm not generally a Low Carber, I mix up how I eat but I do a bit of intermittent fasting and HFLC eating from time to time and now find the switch from glycogen to ketones pretty seemless and if anything get increased mental clarity when in ketosis.

      +Mr Integrity I agree. I have been in ketosis throughout the last year or so and have not felt as he mentioned, rather I feel more clear-headed and awake than when I ate high carb diet. I have been able to go on a 7 day fast and felt surprisingly wonderful. It is important to mention that I didn't fast until I had lost about 60lbs on the LCHF diet first. So you've got to get healthy first.

      It's actually quite healthy to fast one day a week on which you consume nothing but water all day. You should try it. You can then work yourself up to fasting for longer, but you need to drink a good amount of water, cause your stomach does get quite acidic otherwise. It's also very good for you willpower, you get the feeling that you are not controlled by food anymore. Spending a day without eating suddenly doesn't seem like a big deal anymore.

I only once felt lightheaded from it, and that was trying to jump into a multiple day fast after having had a shitty diet for a few months. Previous fasts I did usually involved me eating a low carb diet. So my body may have been already "accidentally" prepared for going into a fast.

    Being in Ketosis can actually be really good for some people- severe epileptics. My little brother had uncontrollable epilepsy and when he was 3, they placed him on the Ketogenic Diet. He had to be very carefully monitored but he would literally eat a whole stick of butter as a meal. Something about the changes the brain goes through during ketosis can help reduce seizures. It kept my brother alive for over 18 months at which time he went off the idea in order to enter a drug trial for a new seizure medication.

      The reason a fat person would die of starvation in the same amount of time as most normal people is more generally that even when in complete ketosis, the brain still requires 30 grams of glucose per day to function. Some of this is obtained from gluconeogenesis of glycerol, but the rest (~10 grams) has to come from protein. If I recall correctly, every gram of protein can be converted into approximately half a gram of glucose, so your body will burn 20 grams of protein per day even when it is in maximal ketosis. Once skeletal muscle stores have been depleted, death will occur, as detailed in the video, from lack of protein, normally causing a cardiac arrest.

    Your brain can burn mostly ketones very happily forever. It isn't some kind of emergency rations that bring decreased functions and sickness. In fact, most people find that replacing glucose with ketones as the primary brain fuel results in a calmer brain. The fact that a ketogenic diet is a standard treatment for epilepsy supports the idea that a brain on ketones is calmer. And there is new evidence that memory actually improves with a brain running on ketones. Of course for people who have never deviated from glucose as their only fuel, there is a transition time during which the body has to boot up its fat metabolizing systems and that transition can be uncomfortable. But it is just a transition to a previously unused and mothballed, but perfectly natural and effective, metabolic system.

    • @Clockworkcityofpain
      @Clockworkcityofpain 8 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Blake Ashley He didn't say it was emergency fuel??? He pointed out that in a normal person (who will most likely run on glucose first), the brain starts feeding on ketone bodies after it runs through most of the glucose but then went to say that triathletes and bodybuilders might be in ketosis pretty often. "It doesn't mean they're starving, just that their metabolisms work differently"

      As I have been in ketosis for much of the last 6 years I have to say my brain runs just fine on ketones. It does take a few weeks to fully adjust but metal and physical performance on a fat and protein fuel source is excellent. I don't have hunger crashes where I have to eat now or else . I don't get migraines due to low blood sugar and I don't have swings in mental acuity. I have fasted for up to a month with nothing but electrolytes and water with no muscle loss. I am a cyclist and find very little loss of ability except maybe my very highest gear its a little limited but my endurance is greatly improved.

    I'm following a ketosis diet for the first time ever right now and absolutely love it. I've been in ketosis for about a week and have no negative effects. On the contrary I've noticed an overall elevated mood and more energy. I haven't had starve myself at all to get into ketosis, just ate less than 50 grams of carbs a day. Ideally on ketosis your diet should be 80% fat 15% protein and 5% carb.
    On another note there was an experiment done in 1965 where a morbidly obese man in Scotland went over a year without food under medical supervision. He lived off his fat stores, but would've died without the supplements the doctors were giving him and being monitored medically. Fat does not give you nutrients so no one think you can live off your fat for ages. You'll die of a nutritional deficiency.

    • @jodharry
      @jodharry 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Mandy Johnson The answer is that they would die just as readily, and it would be even more dramatic, I think. The fat is a fuel for the body to burn, so it's mathematical: as long the body has energy to spare, it will keep going. On the other hand, the starvation per se isn't what's going to kill a morbidly obese person, since they can hold out longer - it isthe OTHER nutrients deprivation that they have been forgoing for so long, which will kill them in the end. It's pointless being able to "theoretically live" 3 months without food when you are mrobidly obese, when the lack of other nutrients necessary to regulate bodily functions will end up killing you before that (think potassium, and the heart, for example).

      ***** Yes every body is different, but that doesn't mean that your body is just going to go against the laws of thermodynamics. If you tried to starve yourself and THEN ended up eating more to compensate for your hunger, yes, that would make you gain weight. But simply starving yourself does not make you gain weight, it makes you lose weight, no matter how many "starvation mode" myths people somehow believe.

I am still workin on gaining that weight back and am currently up to nearly 120lbs. I have been eating pretty regularly since that week but I’ve been gaining slow because my metabolism once again prevents me from gaining weight which can be a blessing and a curse. I can’t imagine how some people can live day to day with little to no food, it must be terrible.

      Well... It's weird? Like I'm doing a project and it's suddenly 4 pm, and you just say "I'll eat dinner then", but now you're tired of working, so you start procrastinating and it's 8 pm, you need to finish the goddamn project, so you continue working, it's 1 am, so you go to sleep. Next morning you are tired, and wake up late, so you hurry up get to work and don't eat breakfast.
      Just, time management problems I guess...

    Oooo I can tell you this one personally!! I have complex gastrointestinal disorders including Gastroparesis, GI dysmotility etc etc... spent two months in hospital not long ago, gradually starving for a month while my nasojejunal tubes failed and then put on a PICC tube with intravenous nutrition for two weeks. Before finally going back home a few weeks later after a nasty kidney infection (just for fun! Lol).
    Still struggling to eat, but back on some meals and some special supplements for now.

    I have fasted for 48 hours before and find this pretty interesting. There seem to be a number of benefits from fasting along with all of the uncomfortable side effects like a constant headache and uncontrollable thinking about food. I have heard that after a few days the hunger goes away almost entirely and the body doesn't gain back this hunger until it takes in food again.
    I can definitely attest to claims of feeling lighter and more alert while not eating. I have also done partial fasting, where I did not eat until after 4pm every week day for a month.
    Controlled fasting has a lot of positive things to reward those willing to try. It offers great perspective on what goes into your body and how you are affected. It will give you a deeper appreciation for food, especially the foods that are good for your body.

    Fatter humans will have a longer fat burning phase since they have more fat cells to burn off before they need to start burning off muscle. A study was conducted by the BBC - Why Are Thin People Not Fat Full BBC Documentary where one individual was able to live for a year with only vitamins and water but he was severely overweight.

    I had anorexia due to nausea from chronic debilitating pain and the thought of eating made me want to throw up. I ended up living on buttered toast and breakfast shakes. It still didn't stop my body from going into starvation mode and trying to eat itself, but helped keep me going until I found a doctor that actually believed the pain wasn't in my head.

    For everyone saying that being in ketosis is a good thing I present to you my findings of it
    Whenever I don't eat for the day for whatever reason (mostly forgetting to get my groceries delivered) the following things are diminished severely
    Muscle strength 60%-80% reduction
    Reaction times (I crash in FSX more often than normal)
    Intelligence (I take 3-4 times longer to solve the puzzles in portal)
    Short term memory (Soldering the + and - wires of a battery together is not fun)
    Concentration is completely gone
    Physical stamina 50% reduction
    Top speed (running/cycling) around 60% reduction
    Fine motor controls (I get very jittery)
    Sex drive is completely shut down (not even porn works!!!)
    (Please explain how any of the above is good)
    Also i get severe nausea if I don't eat several times a day
    And that's just after a day
    I would hate to see what happens after a week
    If this is your idea of a good time then you really need to see a shrink

      +mewantbrains being in ketosis is a good thing, but who ever said being in ketosis was enjoyable?
      it takes 3 days for your body to enter ketosis, 3 days of not eating.
      and you will not feel good, but that is a sign of your body healing.
      all symptoms are a sign of your body cleansing and healing, the deeper into a fast we get, the deeper the cleansing and healing. nobody ever said it was enjoyable to fast, maybe some but it's not necessarily true.
      you will experience healing crisis

    • @mewantbrains

      You sound like one of those insane Muslims that says I will go to hell if I eat everyday

    • @Mikestah55
      @Mikestah55 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      ***** way to ignore all of my points and just spout some useless crap which is un true and irrelevant?
      no im not religious at all, i am someone who has experienced fasting and experienced true healing. and many other people have. just look at some of the results people have gotten on forums like curezone. there a lot of science in this, our bodies evolved to go without food at times.
      just because you think ketosis is uncomfortable doesn't mean that whats happening in your body is a bad thing.
      giving your body a break from processing food may not be comfortable because it is now detoxing, who ever said that was fun?
      this is the problem, people will never understand of appreciate fasting because we are so toxic and dependant on food that if we go without it we look ill, we feel ill, and then people come to the conclusion that we ARE ill.
      The reality is that your actually cleaning out the crap from your poor decisions in life. and the most important step after a fast is to make GOOD decisions!
