    Also people are eating more meat, more processed food, more calorific food, we have more effective modes of transport (less walking), and the internet (can sit on our asses instead of getting up and finding something to do). Couldn’t agree more! We still need to learn a lot about obesity!
    My 2 daughters are 2 years apart, they get fed the same (mostly fresh cooked food) yet they are basically a science experiment.
    Why? Because the 10 year old has been obese since she was 7. Doesn’t matter what we do, she enjoys dancing and is an active kid, she likes healthy food as much as unhealthy food and it doesn’t matter if she eats less or more - she doesn’t loose weight. We aren’t putting her on a diet (my psychology and nutrition background helps) but still try to teach her the science behind everything.
    But my 8 year old has always been slightly underweight. She gained a little bit during lockdown because she couldn’t do her regular sport activities but she’s still on the edge of being underweight. We even struggled often because she lost weight everytime she was sick and couldn’t gain it back.
    The one difference which influenced their bodies? My thyroid. I was gaining weight during the first pregnancy and had to take thyroid medications because of hypothyroidism. After the pregnancy the doctor made multiple mistakes: first, he didn’t tell me I had Hashimoto‘s which is an autoimmune disorder. The he told me to stop taking my medication. He said I would be okay now without it and don’t need it, which isn’t true. You need the thyroid medication to stop the thyroid’s function. That way it doesn’t get attacked by the immune system.
    During my second pregnancy I had a big Hashimoto’s flare, my thyroid got attacked a lot, the sono showed a lot of changes after the pregnancy. I lost a lot of weight, basically everything I gained during the first pregnancy. And no, I didn’t eat much different.
    My Hashimoto’s is still not under control, my auto-antibodies are sky high and the thyroid levels aren’t controlled either. Everything just because the doctor didn’t bother to look up what my diagnosis was. It contributed to the development of my other autoimmune disorder called relapsing polychondritis which can be lethal. Not fun.

    I don't know about the 'overweight genes' from parents… I think it'd be more the lifestyle the kids are raised in.

    • @DroidFreak36
      @DroidFreak36 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It's not even overweight genes, it's overweight epigenetics. If the body that you were created out of (your mom's body) is used to being overweight, your body starts off being used to being overweight. It's like being born obese (on the inside. :P) and fighting an uphill battle to retrain your epigenetics to be used to being skinny.

    • @JoliBastin
      @JoliBastin 10 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      It isn't one or the other; genetic or lifestyle, both play a role. The issue is by no means black and white.

    • @selimcelik3494
      @selimcelik3494 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well I guess parents who already have an overweight lifestyle will pass it on to their kids.

    • @MadBunnyRabbit
      @MadBunnyRabbit 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Actually there was a study, I think "it's ok to be smart" channel talked about it, which showed genes do play a big role in our weight. Although the study targeted weight loose, fitness and strength/mussel building. Basically what they did, they took a number of people with approximately the same weight and fitness level and put all though carefully designed training regiment.
      Some people achieved expected results before target time, while some barely changed at all. So maybe there's no obese gen strictly speaking (although who knows, maybe there is, I wouldn't be surprised) there are clearly genes that prevent us from keeping slim figure and good fitness level without almost extreme discipline.

    • @saleemisgod
      @saleemisgod 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or the culture.

  • @KingJaredoftheLand
    @KingJaredoftheLand 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    My concern is people blaming their weight on unchangeable factors like genes, upbringing etc because it gives them a free pass on just being more disciplined. Even if these factors have made the impact, being unchangeable means they're not worth worrying about then! So instead let's make lifestyle changes on what IS changeable; for the longterm, and for longterm benefit.
    I've never heard of someone radically changing their diet and committing to exercise and not --eventually-- seeing positive results, as long as they keep learning and improving.
    Not to mention the encyclopedia of reasons why regular exercise is crucial to the functioning of the human body. Health and fitness isn't just about losing fat and looking like Baywatch. It's also about, you know... health. And fitness.

  • @ResidualSelfImage
    @ResidualSelfImage 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    1. going to sleep makes it easier for the metabolism to switch into ketosis which will cause the body to burn fat in your fat cells.
    2. adipose tissue/fat cells will more likely release more fat to burn when it cold.
    3. preprocessed sugars like fructose are absorb almost immediately into the blood stream and if not burned/used immediately is converted into fat.
    4. if the mother is starving during pregnancy will make the fetus obesity ... see the Dutch Famine Study ... a classic epigenetic study
    5. (thin oriented ) Fecal pills or probiotics can establish a thin metabolism
    6. Eating healthy means a diet naturally rich in fiber and low in carbohydrates and low in processed foods.

      More like fat people and skinny people usually have problems correctly estimating the actual amount of calories they eat.

    • @SuperShittyfuck
      @SuperShittyfuck 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm fat. I dont eat alot. I eat about the amount that I should. My brother is skinny. he eats alot. he eats more than he should. only difference is, I dont move enough. he doesnt either, but he doesnt have to. because his metabolism doesnt work the same as mine does. people have different kinds of metabolisms, and thats not a bad thing. I would survive for longer in the wild than he would. but we are not in the wild, we are in a civilization where people like me have to try a bit harder than others to become and stay fit. its not just the food we eat. there are alot of factors.

    • @DireConsenquences
      @DireConsenquences 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ozy mandias No. You eat a lot. Most fat people highly underestimate the amount of food they eat. And skinny people over-estimate the amount of food they eat. My sister also thinks she eats a lot - she does not. She nibbles on things once in a while and never finishes her dinner. Once you realise how much calories you are actually, objectively eating, you can plan for weight loss accordingly. Because I assure you, you are eating a LOT more than you think. A regular person should only be eating 1200-1400 calories a day. Oh, and metabolism has absolutely nothing to do with it. It's calories in, calories out.
      Also, the fat ones always get targeted first by predators since they are slower.
      Fat animals do not exist in the wild.

    • @SuperShittyfuck
      @SuperShittyfuck 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** they do not exist because its alot harder to get food in the wild and they get alot more exercise. I'm fairly aware how much my brother and I and many others eat, I eat the same or a lesser amount than most. it often surprise me how much some people eat and how thin they are. my brother and I once tested that out and ate exactly the same for a week while doing about the same exercise (not alot, we are both lazy). he lost 7kg and my weight stayed the same. and I hope you dont seriously think its just calories in and calories out. its alot more complicated than that.

    Being more active can help, but I've lost more weight sitting around doing nothing. I started running 2km's every day and over 4 months I weigh the same. And once during the Christmas holidays I played Minecraft every day all day for 3 weeks and lost 11kg's. Mostly because I forgot to eat.
    I'd reccomend it, but I think I ruined my metabolism, I maintain my weight on about 1000 calories per day and I'm 19. That's with running 2 km's per day as well. It's not too bad, sure I can't eat anything but I'm also not very hungry anyway.

    It's scary, it did progress since this video was made, some of my friends got fat, both my father and my step father are fat, as well as my step mother and step brother, i saw two of my ex, they got fat, co-workers got fat, people in the street are fatter, meanwhile, i'm so glad i'm not someone driven by food cravings, been sticking to a very healthy diet for 3 years now, built muscle, stoped smoking, never felt better in my body, never been stronger, i just wish i could explain to the people that means something to me that it's both easy and important to do as i do.

    I know this is a very divisive subject and everyone is entitled to their own opinion and my own perspective is perhaps a bit extreme to some, but I really do feel strongly that our attitude towards weight, food, and our bodies is incredibly unhealthy and we don't really look at that aspect of health (e.g. how does intense weight stigma affect individuals mental and physical health?) as much as we focus on attaching morality to the size of someone's body. To be fair, I work in health care and I see the potential consequences of obesity (in combination with other factors because health situations in an individuals life are complex), but I also see how these people are treated and how that affects their health as well. We are incredibly stigmatizing, in Western culture, towards individuals in larger bodies and I think it's always important to question potential biases (even in research because we forget that it's still a human process). You cannot look at someone and know very much about them based on the size of their body, but our society tends to equate thinness to health, self-control, "good" moral character, success, etc. But you really don't know anything about the health of someone based on the size of their body (e.g I have seen people dying of some horrible forms of cancer complimented on their slim physique and unfortunately that attitude is not uncommon.) Besides that, everyone deserves to be treated with respect (which we don't do very well currently) and that should not be a controversial statement. Unfortunately the body-positive movement often gets equated to the promotion of being in a larger body which entirely misses the point of the movement as there is no suggestion of what body one should be in, there is merely a focus on the fact that we are all people deserving of respect and that some people are discriminated against based on arbitrary societal values (such as thinness).

    the real issue is people thinks things in packages (sealed boxes and bags) is food. The only thing you should be buying that comes in bags is whole grains like rice, lentils and beans. The rest should be from the produce section. I tell people who are overweight "stop shopping from the middle aisles of the grocery store and you will loose weight."

    I love the Greens and SciShow, but this video makes me sad, starting with "being fat is objectively bad for you," and putting any stock at all in BMI. (The formula was invented by a sociologist to crunch numbers, not to dole out individual health diagnoses!) To not forget to be awesome, I suggest reading through the Shapely Prose archives and Peter Attia's TED talk on Type 2 Diabetes. Unhealthy thin people exist, and healthy fat people exist. And they're all Nerdfighters!

    In addition to what Hank said, gaining and losing weight is affected by:
    The hormones insulin and glucagon.
    Carbohydrates and, to a lesser amount, proteins in our digestive system become blood sugar (fuel) in our blood vessels. Our bodies sense the increase of blood sugar and tell the pancreas to produce more insulin.
    Insulin has 2 jobs:
    (1) Put the blood sugar (fuel) into our body's cells so that they can do their jobs.
    (2) Store excess blood sugar (fuel) in our fat cells and liver.
    When we stop eating (fast) for enough hours, the blood sugar decreases in our blood vessels. Then, our body's sensors sense the decrease and tell the pancreas to decrease insulin production and increase glucagon production.
    Glucagon's job is to take the stored fuel out of the fat cells and liver and, then, put the stored fuel back into our blood vessels so that the body's cells can use that fuel.
    So, we need to do therapeutic fasting to lose weight.
    Also, we need to reduce bad stresses. Bad stresses make our bodies produce the hormones cortisol. The cortisol sets off a chain reaction that causes our bodies to produce insulin.
    Read the book "The Obesity Code" by Dr. Jason Fung, MD, for details and to review the research he reviewed to reach these conclusions.

    its large food corporations. As the amount of food chains increased across the world so has the rate of obesity. The reason why the study found no difference in BMI is because the battle is not at school its at home. If a parent has bad eating habits their child is being fed the same thing. On top of that portions have increased 3x as much in the past few decades.

    And in that research with school kids did they also watch what they eat at home or only during the 7h they're inside school building? Cause usually (by that I mean in every single case) it's their parents fault, and you may remember when they introduced healthy food program in British schools, parents were shoving McDonalds meals through shool fence so their kids don't die from eating a vegetable.
    All those things may contribute to obesity, but there has NEVER been a person eating 1500kcal a day, exercising, and being obese because of too little sleep or air conditioning.

    Some of the things posted on here are very rude and degrading, and that’s not how we’re gonna change the problem. I went to the gym every night with friends and ate as healthy as I could imagine. I never lost weight, but my fat started to turn to muscle. Then I got pregnant and lost all motivation to do anything. I’ve been big all my life and before I was pregnant, i stayed a constant weight for years. Doctors said I was always healthy, just overweight. And that’s fine! I’m ok with that for now. And I know a lot of people, women especially, want to learn to love themselves before doing anything drastic like lose 100 lbs, so they aren’t doing it for society, they’re doing it for solely themselves. And a lot of people don’t understand that, even when you do try, it doesn’t always go you’re way. I’m not saying I promote being overweight, but it does help if people weren’t bashing everyone for being fat because they could have avoided it.

    Good explanation of alternative causes of weight gain. The only problem is that a lot of people will use this reasoning as an excuse to rationalize why they can go on eating huge amounts of delicious, calorie rich, fatty, sugary, highly processed foods. "Why bother eating healthy, when there are all these other complicated, deep societal issues that are also causing obesity"
    They may not say that exactly - but it certainly can easily factor into their thought process.
