  • I explain why it is necessary to rough turn box blanks when turning green wood. I demonstrate how to hollow end grain box blanks with a spindle gouge including using the exciting back hollowing technique.

    I’ve seen RR do that back hollowing technique (on yt) and it’s remarkably fast in his hands. So far, I have not been very successful with it, but I keep trying.

    Hi Mike, just finished rough turning a dozen or so box blanks from a white flowering bottlebrush that i cut back in june this year,I used the technique you used and was amazed at the amount of waste that it removed and so quick. Thanks for sharing your skills Stay safe.......

    Thanks for the video, Mike. I just happened to do several over the weekend in cherry, ponderosa pine and a piece of apple.

    Very helpful video Mike! On the average guessing from the videos most of your blanks are in the 3" to 4" diameter range? Thanks.

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably more like 2" to 3". Larger then that and I conside it a hollow vessel and tend to use hollowing tools. Boxes bigger than 3" start having a problem with lid fitting with seasonal wood movement.

      Thank you Mike. I took your advice and just purchased a baseball bat billet on sale currently at Woodcraft! It should be just right. I also have some scrap mahogany that will be great for a box as well.

    Thanks for taking the time to produce these videos Mike, they are very helpful. I'm a new turner working on my second vase, turned from fairly green red alder branch. The top of the vase is approx 3 1/2" in diameter and 9" deep in the interior. I've had a couple pretty significant catches but not until after the 7" mark. Any suggestions for tool selection or presentation to the wood? I've had pretty good success scraping with either of 14mm round carbide tool or 1/2" bowl gouge with Irish grind but the transition from bottom to walls is problematic at that depth. Cheers, Gord

      At 9" I think you need to move up to a hollowing system. General rule of thumb is hollowing tool shaft diameter should be about 15X the diameter. So you should be looking at probably a 3/4" bar. But as a new turner, perhaps you might consider simpler HF shapes than a vase, some not as deep. Examples would be small HFs, pot pourri bowls with an enclosed rim but fairly large opening. Good luck.

      Thanks Mike, that helps me understand what/why is happening and what tools to build in near future. A little over ambitious for sure but have learned a lot from these two vases. Have also turned a couple 4" deep pencil cups and your technique will be very helpful for those end grain projects. What an amazing hobby! Cheers, Gord

    Thanks for the Vid Mike. It was a good piece of wet wood you used or was it completely dry. So if your using wet timber you need to let it dry and warp then return it? I understand a little better now. Cheers and God Bless you and yours.

      Marc, if it is green (may or may not be wet like fresh Bradford Pear cut in the spring or summer) it needs to be roughed and finish turned later to prevent from warping. The first piece I started demonstrating with that had a crack. I did not have any really green wood on hand as a backup so the replacement piece was pretty dry. Even dry wood you might want to rough and leave for a couple of weeks to stabilize from any released stresses from hollowing.

    Mike do you think dab of hot glue to hold the pieces together till dry might work better than tape? Do you use end grain sealer on the rough turning or only when cutting green to blank size? As always learn so much from you, thanks for sharing.

      I have been exploring hot melt glue with good success and will review in a new video soon.
      I nevery put anchor seal on a box blank. Never had one crack.

    Good information as usual...Thanks! I'm a relativity new turner and am very interested in making boxes. I have made a couple so far with moderate success. Just a couple of questions. What is your opinion about placing the pith in the center of the box so that when seasonal weather changes happen the lid and box will grow and shrink evenly. I have been told by a friend that if I take the pith out as you do with a bowl blank the seasonal changes will cause the box & lid to become slightly out of round due to the uneven grain pattern and the lid may not fit well or even at all at certain times of the year. They also suggested to take the fresh green turning chips and pack them in with the rough turned items and put them in a paper grocery bag to dry slowly to reduce the chance of cracking. What is your opinion...Thanks again!

    • @MikePeaceWoodturning
      @MikePeaceWoodturning  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it depends on the wood. I avoid the pith because there is too much wood available so no need to run the risk of a spoiled box. I almost never have cracking drying roughed out boxes and don't put them in bags like I do bowls. A lot of this is based on your drying conditions. I don't know ehre you live but it is humid here so adding shavings would like cause mold. If it was extremely dry here I might do it.

    • @mmfenske1
      @mmfenske1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, Mike. I live in Wisconsin so we are not as humid as the Southeast would be I suppose. You mentioned you bag your bowls but not boxes...why is that and what's different about bowls? The one challenge I see is that when you cut the pith out completely the "round" area left in the 1/2 of the log becomes much smaller. If you want a larger box you will need a much larger tree I guess. Do you get some lids/boxes get out of round after finish turning.

      @MikePeaceWoodturning  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cross grain bowl roughed bowl blanks are bigger and with more variation in end grain and side grain which dry differently and move differently. I cut my box blanks from the center slab but from each side of the pith. This video might help th-cam.com/video/3EoOT3vtBFs/w-d-xo.html I rarely turn boxes bigger than 3 inches due to wood movement.

    • @mmfenske1
      @mmfenske1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent! Excellent! Excellent!! Thank You!!!! Just one more question...like Columbo I guess. I have seen videos where they make 2 cuts on each side of the pith which might remove an inch or two out of the center of the log. It looks like you take 1 cut right through the pith which might leave a "little" of the pith particularly on one side or the other if you don't hit the pith perfect. Am I understanding your procedure correctly. If a little of the pith remains is the wood still likely to crack or should it be cut again? Thanks.

    What wall thickness is best. Around 1/2 inch? Thanks, Keith

      Depends on the wood and size but 3/8 should be ok for an end grain box top. Leave more for the bottom to allow for the tenon so 1/2 should be good. I have a handout on lidded boxes on my website.
