Diving for Rock Scallops Catch and Eat Raw - Sweet Creamy Delicious!

- The ocean was finally calm enough to go for a dive. Luckily I brought my gear! I wouldn't recommend going alone like this, but if you can find some dive buddies, grabbing some rock scallops in shallow water is very satisfying! The limit is 10 per person, and they are one of the sweetest tasting things you can eat directly out of the ocean. Just double check the shellfish poisoning hotline to make sure they don't have elevated levels of heavy metals. Check weather conditions and count on it being murky. Don't get in unless conditions are right!
This year's Fisherman's Life Street Fair is taking place on July 12, 2025 at Stonestown Galleria in San Francisco, CA. Same place as the last 5 years! I hope you can join us this year and continue the tradition. Lots of food vendors, fishing vendors, live music and so much more. Visit www.fishermans... for more info!
its crazy how Matt can talk while underwater to tell us what's in his mind! true talent.
Lol. With such a clear voice too.
it’s cuz we’re listening to his thoughts telepathically
hes using his underwater telepathic aquaman powers
Goat
😂
A decade of fisherman’s life let’s go
when you made that opening statement it made me remember when i started watching you as a freshman in HS around 2017. Its been a long time since i started considering im now a Marine in Okinawa, Japan anf have been here for three years and have still made time to watch your videos. You truly are someone I want to emulate in life. Semper Fidelis
Crazy to think how time goes by so fast. 2017, over 8 years ago now. Appreciate you watching over the years and still watching! Inspiring to me to make more videos. Hope everything's good with you. Take care of yourself!
"As I was getting more and more comfortable, all the anxiety - any fear I had of diving alone - seemed to vanish. The deeper I got, the quieter it became. And the stillness of my mind was more apparent to me. Songs started playing in my head. I was completely in the element. It seemed as if, on the surface, was all the commotion of everyday life. And down, in the depths, was complete, utter serenity"
No better description of why i cling to my hobbies exists.
I am not sure this is necessarily a positive thing. This could get you in trouble you get comfortable diving alone, start taking more risks , deeper dives etc without much worry because you are feeling more confident and then a disaster happens. I hope that next time he would take a buddy with him for safety purpose.
Yeah, I don't think we should glorify it tbh, just not safe
This was a very great video! I do want to expand on the comment you made about “the orange splotches” and how they are a sign that scallops will be near by. The orange splotches we see are actually sponge (porifera). Like scallops, sponges are also heavy filter feeders so when you see an abundance of sponges it’s not uncommon to see scallops. It’s an indication that the area has optimal current to maximizes the amount of zooplankton and other microorganisms!
Great information, thanks for sharing
I used to do quite a bit of abalone and scallop diving. Matt, if you want to have more luck prying the scallops, get an iron that doesn't have the gage integrated. Also if you get one that has a slight (about 10 degree) bend incorporated about a third of the way down the iron, it makes it a lot easier to get the iron in a good position to pry the scallops off.
Man I love your videos. I’ve been watching for years. But please don’t dive alone. I used to dive Monterey and would never think of diving alone. It’s suicide.
Genuine question.. what is the danger from?
This is one of the best videos you've ever made. Peak Fisherman's Life.
Nothing like scallops and a 5 minutes ago fresh harvest is something else. Has it been 10 years? Damn
Thanks for the video ! I got a limit of scallops once many years ago by scraping the sides of a floating concrete dock with a floor scraper while holding a net below to catch whatever fell off. In retrospect it was probably not a legal way to get 'em but they were still delicious.
You should have a dive buddy💯 also, isn't there great whites there?? Lol much love from the coast of Maine 🤙
You have a family man. They need you. Stop solo diving before that option is taken from you. Still a beautiful dive!
I have to add my 2 cents as well. If you don't recommend your viewers to do it for safety reasons, you shouldn't do it either! Be safe Matt!
100% agree vare dangerous and not a good role model for 1000's of people who are going to view the video and some who will try to replicate.
I'd wish he bring someone along, he's living like he doesn't have a family at home
No worries people. Matt knows his limitations. He is more safe by himself.
It's a pleasure to watch your videos. You explain everything so well, and you're becoming quite the freedive expert.
You are one of the coolest fisherman ever!
Never stop making vids man! I look forward to every single one
The gear breakdown before the thing your doing 👍🏼 game changer
Like and enjoy greetings from cold Germany
Crazy you can even spot these. Nice work!
you really should have a buddy with you when you dive like this. Hypoxia, entraptment and predators are real, and I don't want to lose my favorite channel host!
Another great video. Thanks for sharing.
Love it Mr Fisherman's life, keep iy up and hello from Los Angeles
I love scallops but never even thought to try them raw. Will have to give it a go sometime
diving videos are my favo.
please more diving
the population of sea urchin has really exploded and caused a lot of issues with depopulation in areas of other species. the kelp die off, and lower plankton counts remove alot of the fish and shellfish numbers. while i wouldnt like to see them destroyed on purpose, it would be beneficial if Cali would increase catch rates for them, or pay minor fees for them to remove them in certain areas. the fishing would improve alot.
Haven't had you recommended to me in a while! Glad to see you're still active, those scallops look insane!!! :0
Shucking underwater is the way to do it. I use a home depot paint scraper but a lot of people use cake frosting spreaders. The technique is to get the scraper inside the shell before the scallop clamps down, if you do you are golden, and can even leave the tool there if you are low on air. Once it is in the scallop scrape the adductor muscle as close to one side of the shell as possible and then peel that side off. Shuck the other side like you did in the open ones in this video, but instead of tearing the adductor up it will come out whole. Then feed everything that isn't the white muscle back to the fish.
time dilation is real and coincides with the amount of energy your brain cells are using, you became underwater ninja
Great video.
God Bless you.
Tear-free Baby shampoo tends to do the trick to stay fog free with goggles
You earned that raw scallop. Kudos to you, nice well earned haul.
Awesome man, good to see you still out there doin your thing
I want to try scallops like that love your videos in content been following you since the beginning you’re the man hope to see you at your street fair this year I’m planning a trip trip 🤙🏼🎣
Always have a spotter brother stay safe while diving
Good luck brother 💪
Brother, i appreciate what you are documenting. I wish i had a GoPro 25 yrs ago. You are living right. Those rock scallops are the best thing in the sea, bar none. Good work, but stop telling everyone!
Pick up Raymon Canon's book How to Fish the Pacific Coast. Published in 1967 it"s Gold.
Bought it just now thanks for the suggestion!
Good man. You of few, will be able to relate to the parallels that he puts on paper.
Great video, Matts! Love the content, but please be safe out there!
Probably my most favorite episode you made so far.
So awesome how you just get after it and harvest meat Matts. Great vid FML 👍🏽👏🏽
The abundance of urchins is why the grass and plants are gone
Free driving in CA in the winter is some crazy shit
LOVE YOUR FISHING VIDEOS 🐟 🐠 🎣 🦞 🦀 🐙 🦈 🐳 🐬
Scallops are soo good. I wanna try them raw now.. lol great video bro!
That looks super good 😊
Love all the ocean videos, but i miss the arima salmon videos!!!
I would be scared sh*less diving by myself and foraging. Just reminds me of the story I read a few years ago of a guy in Mexico that was diving for some kind of seafood for his family and to sell. Only to be decapitated/have his head bitten off by a great white shark. But stay safe Matts! And thanks for another great video.
Another tip for getting a wetsuit on is to put your feet in grocery bags, they will slip right through.
Every time I watch you, I re-evaluate my (bad) eating choices. They look tasty, and I initially don't like scallops !
Very cool lovin' it.
Nice little haul.
If you can find a piece of 2" rebar cut it to 2'8" long and use an angle grinder to shape a flat chisel point on each end. Tie a clove hitch loop in the centre with 3mm dynema for your attachment point. The weight of your bar will help alot with penetration when you spear in behind the scallop to pry. But always wear dynema gloves. And plastic fins are alot cheaper than those nice ones your using if your just going to beat them up on the rocks... I hope that helps you out brothr, enjoy!
love the vids man keep it up
Love/hate scallop diving 😂
The way you described the difference between the surface clutter and the serenity of the deep was a reminder to me of how going deep into, God's Word, does the same thing for our souls. Thank you.
❤
The Gospel of John as, Jesus, leads you, Reader.❤
Hell yeah Matt!!🙏🙏
Brah! The uni! The kina! The sea urchin! Everywhere!
If you ever need a dive buddy, just call up Jun. He would love to go with you. Haha... i can give him my dive gear.
I'd love to start diving like that here in Norway, but I also don't feel like shaving my beard to do it. Oh the dilemma...
It looks so peaceful when you do it. Love the vids!
I love your narrating on this one. You sound just like Morgan freeman
Matt, ginger is great for seasickness. Clinically proven and non drowsy
Hey brother, I love your videos. Not doing too much diving anymore than my older years. But when I did dive for scallops instead of prying them off shell and all I would use my fillet knife, slide it along the shell it would open right up I would reach in and take the meat and go to the next one.
My gf and I both love scallops but fresh and raw would be an unknown for us. Great video!
I bet a Estwing nail puller would work wonders, prying them off! Great video and found it informative with the commentary
holy hell, the amount of sea urchin is insane!
Need more sea otters or that guy from New Zealand to slide by
Love your videos brother
Careful out there Matts.
Sea sick from swimming/ snorkeling?
Thats a first for me
P.S. NEVER DIVE ALONE!
Yes kwedini ♥️♥️♥️💯
I have yet to pop my first scallop! I always end up zoning in on shooting fish haha plus I don't think I could recognize a scallop. Great video, I'll try to look out for those lips 👄
Sweet dude.
click like if you'd be willing to be Matt's dive buddy. See Matts you're so loved! take no risk.
Hell yeah!
Try a SLIDE HAMMER(a small one use to pull out dents on car) with a hook bar on one end and a chisel on the other end. A rope will attach to the hammer head, which can help you put more power. With this kind of hammer, you can hook and pull out any scallop in the hole.
Matt love the vids
Aside from the SOLO diving danger, another great vlog Matts! Always save your videos like dessert.. Keep'n it Reel!
Great video, I noticed that when you try to pry off the scallop you tend push the handle of the ab iron down. You might have more success if you pull the handle up. This will also be useful if abalone season ever opens up again, because you'll keep from tearing up the meat. Also, baby shampoo is a great way to keep your face mask from fogging up.
Nice job!
Man, if this were me, I'd be sacking up some of those anemones and urchins, and well, whatever else I could throw in my aquarium. Ha.
I think having a small emergency 15 minutes oxygen tank would be helpful
Spare air
A tip brother! Dive with someone.
Saying you dont need gloves when diving is wild to me... this is coming from a barefoot freak. watered hands can be cut by literally almost anything.
Fun Video...~!
Go to harbor freight and pick up a small pry bar and wrap or spray the handle bright orange and there you go. The bar doesn’t have a bend allowing you to have leverage against the rock. GET A DIVE BUDDY!! Or a cameraman 😁
Shaaaaaark!!!
Great vid! It got me sea sick 🤢
9:00 isnt that a scallop???? or what is that circular flat thing??
TBH I use a long handle flathead to pull off those scallops. So much easier.
That's the most simple, readily available and probably most efficient tool for scallops. Great idea!! Thanks for sharing
Quit diving alone!
Because we all lov U brother 😊 and your family
Ya I dive with my brother and it pisses me off when he goes without me. But Its hard to find a dive buddy. Not everyone is down to dive in the ocean.
This is the mentality from people who were raised by their mothers. Quit being soft! The man is living his best life which includes risks. So what? We’re here for a good time, not for a long time.
I agree. He needs a sidekick. Like a dog.
@@DavidPerez-ez1mw a sea dog?
Fishin in the dark on repeat in your head right? 👌🏽
I can't help but wonder, would Richards red pry bars work? They come in different sizes, are bright red and silver, often called "Bee" bars, paint scrapers, and glazing bars.
Looks fun plus love foraging though nothing here yet from the Midwest yet , plus eating good & also u get uni or sea urchin yet
Matts, there is a product called Prid drawing salve that supposedly draws out splinters, thorns etc. in your skin. Worth a try to see if it draws out those sea urchin spines.
Brother you need a small prybar for the difficult ones or my favourite is a wood chisel and hammer works a treat .
Salty , sweet and creamy and they usually never make it home .
My grandma was a "Ama -san" in Kumamoto, they used a single hook (Nomi) chisle to pry the scallop off look up "the last ama" by VICE there some parts where you can see the tool, I would recomend trying to make one or find it for scalops, abalone, chonch it works great. Its more precise and has leverage than the tool you got there. Ive used it at low tide to pry oysters and gooseneck barneckles off the rocks. Saw something that may work on amazon Kakuri root hook on amazon it looks good enough.
good dive clean eater Florida scallops are easer to get maybe not as big
🎉
In Florida from what I've seen Scallops are free-swimming and hide in Seagrass, but I've only seen videos...
I dip my scallops in mustard. Then i feed the shells to my aunt.
i havent checked your website in a while but if you dont already have Dive fins on There id Say add them
Hey Matts!
Dudes throwing away the best part of the scallop. They would die in Japan if they saw this. It’s delicious!
❤
