I did a great job using up stash, and had not bought any yarn in 18 months. And then…..this fall I started watching several podcasts with beautiful sock yarns and I got the bug to knit more socks. Most of the socks I knit this fall are gifts for my family, but some are for me, too. I would like to start tracking my state of the stash, thanks for the inspiration!
After 18 months and a lot of stash busting it sounds like you were due for some pretty sock yarns! Tracking the stash you have does help keep track and keep it under control.
I used to know how to do pivot tables but it’s been so long since I did it, I completely forgot how to do it. I might have to go to TH-cam University to relearn!
Exactly! I’m pretty good about doing it straight away, otherwise I know I’ll forget and all that hard work will have been for nothing. Trying to remember where I left off would be harder than starting over I think.
I’ve added 40 skeins to my stash this year, but believe it or not: I have been better about not buying yarn until I’m ready to use it. I frogged a 4 skein project and an 11 skein project that were both purchases made earlier this year. The frogging prompted me to adjust other knitting plans, so I am trying to not beat myself up over it. I will start these projects over again next year and things will come back into balance. Keeping track has certainly helped me become more realistic about how much I actually use.
I count Ravelry entries of yarn in stash. So if I have more than one skein of the same yarn I just count it as one entry. I don’t count non-full skeins if there’s not a lot of it and I don’t count acrylic unless it’s a completely full skein. So I have some bits and bobs that are not included. I have my own system. 😃
I don't use Ravelry to track yarn, but I don't really have a stash because I only buy for specific projects. Though I do have left overs, so eventually I should make a few stripe sweater. :)
If I knew then what I know not I would have a much smaller stash. I envy your process of buying exactly what you want when you’re ready for it. I hope to be there some day!
I know I'm ending the year with more yarn than I started with, but I figure I can start all over again in January so why not go out with a bang -- thus, why I bought so many advents....
HAHAHA my state of my stash probably doubled this past month. I had a baby in January so not much knitting this year as usual and then I won an auction of 59 skeins of Madeline Tosh DK for less than 5 bucks a skein. I'm hoping to bust stash all of next year and not really buy any more as I now have several sweater plus quantities of yarn.
You have mentioned all of my favourite things; yarn, knitting AND spreadsheets. You've got me wanting to make a 'knit/yarn log' spreadsheet now. 😂
Hahaha, I love it! Happy to have another spreadsheet loving knitter here 🤗
Bravo!!
Thanks 🤗

In Excel so you ever do Pivot table? You can count only the thing you want to count without doing much work.

I have a couple of skeins that need to go into Ravelry. I put them aside until I do that. Gotta keep it up! 👍🏻

I think you’re doing great! Just bring more aware means you’re able to make better decisions. And it’s ok to buy yarn 🤗

That’s a good way to do it! Thank you for sharing your ideas and process. It’s so helpful to learn from one another.

I’m pretty sure I’ll be right there with you. Without knowing the final numbers, I’m pretty sure I’ve done better than last year. Baby steps!

Wow! Sometimes you just gotta get the yarn. I would have too. That’s a great deal. Hopefully you have time to knit more soon.
