I know it was glossed over for the sake of talking about history, but can we talk about 5:33 please? She is thrusting a weapon *specifically* designed to not be thrusted, and is *somehow* succeeding. It probably wasn't intentional, but I think that detail really does help sell the "nigh-unstoppable warrior" character
I mean, given what we've heard about this woman, is she thrusting it, or sawing it? Because I wouldn't half-doubt she'd saw a person's head off.
It‘s really not that big of a deal to thrust with a weapon for slicing and having a curve.
What? you will still thrust with a naginata. It's a polearm. It's specifically designed for lots of things, thrusting IS one of those. It keeps range from the attacker, which female warriors would particularly stand to gain from because they can neutralize a man's height advantage with this range, for example.
If you have ever sparred with anything you know that the longest-reaching, highest-range attacks you make are extended thrusts. A polearm lets you do that in a variety of ways. The curvature of the naginata adds "slashing" to the repertoire of the spear, which is part of why it's a great weapon. It's not "glossed over".

I'm assuming all of this information about Tomoe Gozen could also apply to Chie's persona, Tomoe, in Persona 4 Golden.
Most of the protagonist persona are all based in Japanese history and mythology. Tomoe is the historical figure / legend, followed by Suzuka Gongen who was another prominent warrior woman who married and betrays Akura-Ou. If you play golden her final awakening is the goddess of purification.

Japan has a historical tradition of loving tomboys and that's great.
They're *really* just the strong girls/women *nature* breeds; we only need the term "tomboy" to describe them because *Abrahamic* society (which America, being founded on Christianity, *is* ) took all those traits and behaviors of strong humans completely *independent* of their sex, and just *labeled* them all *specifically* "masculine", and created a very *artificial* form of femininity meant *specifically* to keep women *weak* and *subservient* to men. But *yeah* , Japan's cultured like that. That's just *one* reason I love their culture.

This is primarily where the notion that strength equals one's ability to kill and destroy, hence masculinity. The Judeo-Christian notion of strength is that of a strength of character, of resilience in the face of adversity that is exemplified by many great women such as Ruth, Esther, Mary Magdalene and so on.

Both cultures even depicted Aphrodite, their love and beauty goddess, with *abs* .
Contrast this with the Abrahamic cultures, in who's stories even the "strong" women who have stories dedicated to them, beg a *man* to solve their problems *for* them; I'd say I got it *correct* .

So, I'm gonna be that Fate guy in the comments, probably not the first even after watching the video, but hearing how this is related to Tomoe Gozen and I first ran into her in Fate Grand Order... Maybe a Sequel video on the Fate Version and her Beat Saber counterpart? Based on this video I think it's safe to say that a lot of what was brought up seems pretty accurate to at least her design, and hearing how good she is with a bow it makes sense that Tomoe would first show up as an Archer, even if she still wields a katana and Spear in her attack animations... But I wanna love to hear from you why she's part Oni and her Noble Phantasm has her flipping over her enemy, chucking them into the air from the momentum of said flip, and firing a Flaming arrow hot enough to be a Miniature Sun on impact!
i'm gonna be the queen's blade girl and mention that there is a shrine maiden named tomoe who enters the queen's blade tournament to save her village from the invading koma ninja clan. may not be the more accurate version of her but that version is just as pretty and just as ready to kick your ass as the OG.

Yes! I never thought I would see Tomoe Gozen in this channel! She is one of my favorite Samurai Legends and I feel like people don't talk about her that much. I've seen other videos about Tomoe before, but none of them were as informative as you. So I really appreciate your detailed explanation of her.

So, it's nice to put a backstory to a name. I know the name 'Tomoe' from the anime TSUKIMICHI -Moonlit Fantasy when the MC renames his first companion to 'Tomoe' saying that she was the strongest Samurai that he knew. But the show itself didn't explain the reference. So now I know.

I can't help but notice that the first given storied battle about Tomoe Gozen kind of makes her sound like Japan's idea of a Queen Leonidas, only, you know, more real and bad@$$ then what the Greeks had.

Hey, Tomoe Gozen. She shows up in Fate/ Grand Order, where she yeets the opponent into the sun and then 360 no scopes them.
So strong she was classified as an oni in that game, as she ripped a man's head from his shoulders.

Not gonna lie, I used Tomoe Gozen as inspiration for a story I put off and later scrapped. Long story short, ever heard of the 442nd Regimental from WW2? It's a story about them but told from the perspective of a combat medic put in there because of a clerical error. Anyways the story just lives rent-free in my head and in a notebook in my stash. Maybe I'll get around sharing more. I don't know.

This was a great video! I'd love to see you do more analyses of Tomoe Gozen in different games, like Persona 4 and Fate/grand order (where Tomoe holds a distinction of being one of the very few cute girls with no romantic interest whatsoever in the main character, and instead talks about getting Yoshinaka to adopt you).
In fact, a lot of the Heike stories in Fate would be cool to see you talk about!

gah. I wish I could read Japanese to a much, much higher level to understand primary sources about Tomoe Gozen. What a warrior! We can watch the evolution of Japanese polearms through her namesake.
I remember the first time I heard about Tomoe Gozen, it was from the manga Samurai Deeper Kyo. Pretty deep into the manga the villain group of the series, the Mibu clan, are being fought by the heroes and one of them dresses like a modern day nurse..for reasons...and she also has a modified form from experimentation that turns her into a bunny girl of sorts iirc. Anyway this lady also has a thing for necromancy and her similarly nurse dressed female assistant is actually Tomoe Gozen and the group have to fight her, complete with that Naginata of her's even though she would rather not fight them since she's ya know...a corpse and soul brought back from the dead being forced to fight by her master...it's actually pretty cool and I REALLY need to finish by getting the last couple of manga for that one...I think I was up to 17...need to double check..

Curious question Gaijin, does the other character in P&R Reshrined, Ikazuchi the weasel girl, have any cultural ties? She describes herself as being able to control weather and her base weapon is throwing lightning bolts. Does that have ties to anything?

This video kinda just makes me want G+G to go over more Fate characters. I get how sometimes the design and stories may irk some people with them being portrayed in a certain way, but there's also so much good stuff there. Whether it's FGO Fuuma Kotarou or Koha-Ace's Hideyoshi. But maybe that's just me.

I know you don't like Fate Grand Order but one of my favorite Servants is Tomoe Gozen as she was one of my first to summon and has been my main favorite Archer and made me want to learn her origin. Granted the one in Fate is also an Oni and develops a love for videogames but still. I will always acknowledge Tomoe Gozen as an amazing figure in Japan.

Does Tomoe appear in the Fate series as a Heroic Spirit? Sounds like she at minimum qualifies for being summoned as Archer, Saber, and Rider.
She does indeed show up in the mobile game; Fate: Grand Order as the Archer class. There are story elements I don't wanna spoil. Tomoe is awesome.
She is an archer yes. Shows up in the mobile game, The Shimosa chapter specifically.
Yep she is in FGO and appears as an archer class servant but like all archers she only uses a bow for her noble phantasm and mostly fights using a sword and naginata

She has a Saber Class as well for the up coming Summer Event in NA, which has her relaxing... with Beat Saber. They eventually turn into actual red and blue flaming swords later on, but still.

I have an interesting video idea, You should make a video on "Who Killed Captain Alex?" by Nabwana I.G.G. and Wakaliwood and how the film reflects on Ugandan culture and particularly the city of Kampala and how it shows anyone can make a movie even with a budget of $200 and how the people who made it with passion.
Meanwhile, In Fate/Grand Order, Tomoe Gozen is portrayed as a Samurai with white hair, is beautiful, and happens to be a gamer.

In Genshin Impact there are 2 Oni Clans: the Red Oni and Blue Oni. I'm sure there is a cultural reason for that. Maybe you could cover that?
