The concept of gangs of firefighters brawling over territory is something we've had in the West as well. Many gangs in 19th Century America worked as volunteer fire-fighters, and would wage turf wars with one another. Sometimes, two teams would reach the same fire and fight over who got to stop the fire, which sometimes led to buildings burning down while the fight was still in progress.

    • @sfsin3380
      @sfsin3380 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Still better than what was happening in Briton at the same time fire fighters would only put a home insured with that company and of course the paper work that confirmed who they where with was inside the burning house so you could have several fire fighter groups standing around watching a house burn.

People's value on life back then was different, too. People had lots of children and lived, fairly recklessly, because even those who were careful could still die from something as lame as a moldy piece of meat. They had to live vibrantly back then because the flames of their lives were as short and easily to snuff out as the flame on a candle stick.

Watching Fire Force I could tell that Benimaru's flags (the Matoi) had some kind of historical significance but I couldn't for the life of me tell what good something that looked like it was made of paper would be in a fire. But using them as a beacon of sorts kind of makes sense since they would be super noticeable against black smoke.

  • @TBustah
    @TBustah 5 ปีที่แล้ว +64

I didn’t watch the spoiler part, but I imagine those hooks were used for the same purpose as similar hooks that used to be used by western firefighters: tearing down buildings to prevent the spread of fire. That’s why many fire departments that have been around for a long time are called hook and ladder companies, those were their primary tools before water pumps and ladder trucks were invented.

I enjoy the show for what it is, but I definitely felt like it had problems in its initial arc that have gotten better over time. This video gives me a better appreciation for the inspiration behind the show and gives me a better lens to examine it critically. Also I'm pretty sure Gaijin misspoke a bit as the protagonists of Fire Force are from Fire Force Company 8 not 6.

I remember watching something about that. Back when the Louisiana Territory was owned by Spain, there was a fire that ripped through (what is now) the French Quarter. Back then, if there was a fire, you were supposed to ring the bell of the church to alert the fire brigade. The problem was that the fire happened on a Friday, and there was a law that forbade the church bell from ringing on Friday’s.

True, but they were always more organised as these guys, eventually deputised by the city with some authority, and patrolled the place for fires... Which made them more professionalised as fire fighters but also an accidental police force. Rome - we're kinda flammable, Response - deputised mercenary patrol, wait no we just made the police.... ah whatever they tear down buildings too [then demand payment] (No wonder Crassus got so rich - yes he made a large fire fighting force and not coincidentally was the richest Roman of the time)

This....really explains Fire Force. I was wondering why they had Fire stations that either didn't cooperate with each other or were outright hostile, and had their own goals. Also explains how some of them were hodgepodge assortments of rookies, stragglers, and strange characters, while others were highly organized and apparently received good funding from 'somewhere'.

Firefighter gangs actually happened in the US too! most famously in New York. it only stopped being a thing because whenever two fire brigades would show up at the same place, they'd ignore the fire and have a street brawl instead while people's houses burned down in the background, so they finally had to sit down and lay out official districts.

I swear to God, sometimes it feels like there are some conspiracies in the anime & manga industries when it comes to setting a trend.
Suddenly many anime has Imouto trope, then game world, then heroes, thick or muscular girls, then gyarus, then Isekais, MILFs, a man taking care of a loli, etc.
We're probably still in the Isekai era. I don't know whether the MILF era will last.
A-man-taking-care-of-loli trope may or may not be next.

Really love your videos! Look forward to seeing every new video you make. Fun fact, the demolition of combustibles is still an active practice of fire fighting today. Granted it's not used for tearing down houses or buildings to stop the spread of fires, but it's actually still used for forest and wild fires. Since dry grass lands and forests are literally packed together with highly flammable materials, one of the methods for fire suppression is the removal of materials. Mostly done by the states forestry commision. They specialize in the management and protection of our forests from fire, parasites, and the replanting of new forests. The states forestry commissions have bulldozers that they use to make "fire lanes" where there will clear the ground of small vegetation, grass, fallen leaves, and some trees in order to stop the flames from traveling further.

Most folks I know who saw the movie-including myself-have traveled hours to see this film multiple times! The animation is just....woah.

Mose Humphrey isn’t as well-known as Bunyan and Henry, perhaps because he lived out his exploits in the city, rather than on the frontier. But he was a character just as legendary.
“Big Mose” lived in the rough and tumble Bowery area of New York City, with a physique that matched his nickname, and a demeanor suitable to the neighborhood.
Eight feet tall with hands the size of cast-iron skillets and a big granite-like chin, the red-headed Mose was said to have the strength of ten men and was known as “the toughest man in the nation’s toughest city.” He could swim across the Hudson River in two strokes, and all the way around the island of Manhattan in six. He puffed on a cigar two-feet long and exhaled the smoke so forcefully that it pushed sailboats in the harbor off course.
Mose thus cut an intimidating figure as the leader of the Bowery Boys gang. In taking on rival gangs from the Five Points, like the Dead Rabbits, Mose would hoist and lob giant paving stones and uproot lampposts and trees, wielding them like other men would a baseball bat.
Despite his rough exterior, however, Mose really had a heart of gold. A regular parishioner at St. Andrew’s Church and a dedicated husband, he was in fact best known not for his fighting prowess, but as the city’s best and bravest firefighter.
Firefighting in the mid-19th century was an all-volunteer affair, and the job not only required even more speed, strength, and stamina than it does today, but simply more bodies as well.
Heavy fire “engines” were propelled neither by horse nor motor, and instead were pulled through the streets of NYC by sheer manpower alone. Once the wagon arrived on the scene, its hoses were attached either to the city’s few hydrants or dropped directly into a body of water. The “fireboys” then had to work a manual pump to generate enough pressure to propel the water through the hoses and onto the flames. Pushing the wagon and manning the pump could require up to 30 men.
Firefighting was also a competitive enterprise. 4,000 volunteers were organized into hundreds of rival companies in the city, all of which sought to be the first to arrive at the fire, seize an available hydrant, and put out the blaze. Jockeying for position sometimes beget out-and-out fist fights between the companies, who simultaneously fought each other, and the fire.
In both battles, Company 40 had a huge advantage in being captained by “Mose the Fireboy.” He could easily drag the company’s “pumper” for miles by its rope, had an uncanny ability to walk through flames unscathed, and possessed the strength to remove any obstacle. Once, for example, a trolley card became stuck on its track and blocked the path of Company 40’s pumper. Old Mose just lifted it up, hoisted it above his head, and put it down out of the way. Another time, Mose made a tunnel to New Jersey to siphon enough water from the Hudson River to put out a huge fire in the city. And he always managed to rescue would-be victims of blazes - including all the children in an orphanage fire - even if it meant putting himself in considerable danger. When citizens thanked him for his heroism, he’d always reply, “I’m just doing my job.”One day, however, he realized his services were no longer needed. Responding to the alarm bells signifying a fire down by the docks, he dragged the pumper through the city’s streets, only to arrive to find streams of water already dousing the flames. The water was being pumped from a horse-drawn, steam-powered engine, a powerful pumper that only required six men to operate, instead of the two dozen who typically worked alongside Mose. And these firefighters weren’t volunteers, but trained, paid professionals.
Mose could see that the era in which every man could pitch in in an emergency, and epic strength was a valuable asset, had come to a close. He sadly pushed his company’s old pumper off the dock, and disappeared into the large crowd who had gathered to watch the professionals do their work.
Mose vanished from his old Bowery haunts after that day. Some said he had gone to California to mine for gold; others said he had joined the Pony Express.
But according to one storyteller, an old veteran from the days of volunteer fireboys swore he’d seen Mose around the city:
“If you want to know the truth about Mose, pay attention to me. He’s among us still. I seen him hanging around lampposts on cold winter nights. I seen him sleeping in burned-out old tenements. I seen him walking along foggy wharfs.
You could say old Mose is the spirit of New York. And when all them shiny new machines decide to break down, and when the city fire-alarm bell starts to ring again, watch out. Because by then, you know, that fireman will have grown to be at least twenty feet tall.”your description of Japan firefighter sound lot like united state of America firefighter.

It makes me wonder if any of the fire fighting games had any cultural significance. The only two I've played were The Firemen 2 and Burning Rangers. I know there's Mighty Switch Force 2 but that's more puzzle focused than fire fighting. (BTW you may have to import both. I don't know if Firemen 2 is still in the PSN store for PS3 and a US copy of BR is way too much.)
On the Subject of your Japan Stories, you could do it the same way you've been doing your videos or that one time you re-enacted those times you've been refused service when you needed a new stamp. Another idea would be to have it animated. If you wanna try that, test the waters using audio from one of your live streams.

There was an old Sega Saturn animeish game about firefighters using high tech equipment, it was put out by Sonic Team and it was called Burning Rangers. I honestly would like to see more anime and manga like this, also even though there were spoilers I'll have to check that Promare out..I've already had my eye on Fire Force since I found out there were a lot of pile bunker style fire tools in the series..I actually need to get the latest couple of manga..and a better copy of vol. 10...mine was ALLL ganked up from the printer..like..images and words off the page due to printer error ganked up..I was in a hurry and didn't bother to check for stuff like that like I usually do. Just waiting on the anime to come to DVD..not gonna bother with it on Cartoon Network..I prefer subs anyway.

This explains why a lot of japanese yokai involve, have flames on them, or can use flame powers; like the kitsune or nekomata. Just think what a single fox fire from a Kitsune could do in a crowded market... I think people forget that most japanese houses were little more then wood and paper. Also alot of their fabrics such as silks were highly flammable. AND most communities had some kind of forest near them. The ancient japanese culture was a pyromaniac's dream.

There's one thing I absolutely disagree with in this video. Galo DOES use his futuristic Matoi in the correct manner during the opening sequence. He's shot to the top of the building where he waves it around with as a spinning fan to clear the smoke, and guide the VTOL down to rescue the people trapped on the roof. It's certainly more modernised, but it's still a proper Matoi!

you did a great job but you did get something wrong it was the tanabikeshi who were the under prepared and under supplied protecters of the chōnin's well the machibikeshi was the replacement system for the tanabikeshi as the machibikeshi were well funded well supplied and well trained. the machibikeshi would later go on to be Edo's only firefighting force by the time of the Meiji Restoration or at least what i learned

In regards to the question of why there arent more shows about Hikeshi... perhaps because of the switch to concrete buildings in many areas they died off in relevance and have thus been relegated to just the historical context. Of course firefighters are still around but I have to believe fires are FAR less frequent since the advent of non wood structures.

Its cool to see the cultural significance of the fire fighters, though I now wonder about what significance the Burnish and Infernals might have. The similarities between them lead me to believe that they must be inspired by something.
